At arrival, one room was give (room 301) which was beyond expectation. Very dirty floor, dirty microwave, not functioning fridge, windows so filthy you could not see through them, balcony doors not falling on the locks, door handles stained with pigeon poo: just horrible. Went to the clerk at reception who mentioned there were no other rooms and displayed a very not-interested nasty attitude. When asked for a full refund, he called the manager and all of a sudden, another room was available. This was room 405. Went to inspect this room as same story as 301. Not acceptable at all. Finally room 306 was shown and and this appeared to be a little better. However, the floor and furniture were very dusty bathroom was now finally OK and acceptable: however the level of cleanliness was not. I ended up cleaning the floor and furniture myself and asked for a mop and cleaning detergent. Delivered was a very black dirty mob and no detergent at all. Guy..this is the level of the Avataar hotel. Breakfast on the top floor is a big joke. except for the view. Dirty stained cups and ended up with rash on my tongue. I took just one day breakfast only where I only drank the tea wit this result. Positive matter is the water pressure and warmth of the shower. ON the first day of breakfast I met the manager/owner? who wanted to have my opinion and would connect with me later on. I briefly shared my experience and never heard from him again. This hotel is a big rip off.

Great location on one of the few quieter streets in Thamel. Super friendly staff that will make you feel at home during your stay. My favorite feature was the rooftop, which one of the highest in Thamel, and great for soaking up the scenary of mountains and some glorious sunshine - also with it being the highest up there privacy is very well established too. Ruchana and Sanjay were phenomenal managers and will ensure you are comfortable and well settled.

A Positive Stay!

The overall experience I had at this hotel is very positive! I was first given an upgrade to a suite, which the room is very big, clean and comfortable! Their wifi is great and stable too!

The breakfast was great with a great variety of selections.

Most importantly, the staffs have all been friendly, helpful and very professional addressing my requests. They are also able to help you book customised tour trips around Kathmandu.

I will highly recommend this hotel to others!

The hospitality and welcomeness was exceptional. The staff were very polite and friendly. The property is nicely situated in the midst of a bustling tourist-town Thamel, which made it easier to go around. The amenities provided were great as well. I recommend this place for future travelers!

The Avataar Hotel has very talented staff, respect the customers and very well aware regarding the need of their customers and provide them the required services. The Hotel has a very good room service and the staff always smiles when they are providing the services to their Guests. This is my second visit there in last two years and I wish I travel to Nepal every year and will enjoy their services. Located in the tourist area of Themal, Avataar Hotel is central and within walking distance of some main attractions and taxi services. The staff were helpful and organised a free airport taxi one way when we left, which was very helpful and efficient. Breakfast on the rooftop was adequate with a sufficient range of foods and drinks. The room was very modern with air con and fridge (although ours didn’t turn on). There was an issue with hotel water for our last two days but this is common in Nepal, although communication from the staff would have been nice to let us know if/when it was coming back on. Overall, we had a pleasant stay.

My friend and I recently stayed here. The twin room was big enough not to be tripping over each other. This was our first trip to Kathmandu and i found this Hotel on Expedia and it was as it appears on the photos. One of the owners, Mr Jack is also a registered travel agent, so we booked our domestic flights and tours through him, He also arranged all our airport transfers. If you are looking for a clean, friendly and reasonably priced accomadation in Thamel, then this will be for you.

Nice place, good value.

Overall a nice place to stay. Room seemed a bit smaller than advertised (per measurements) I would recommend to include the breakfast. It's a bit more expensive if need to buy it. The staff is extremely friendly. The fast food stand at the lobby is very cheap and convenient for a quick meal. The root top terrace is very nice. I would definitely stay there again. It's a good value. The transfer from the airport was very reliable also.

Central Location but with BUGS

There were bugs in the room. The staff was really helpful, they've moved to another room. However i will never forget the shock of seeing dozens of 2-inch-big bugs in the room running around. I'm looking for a compensation of the full stay price, it can be in Orbucks as well.

Everything was perfect and great.I stayed this hotel before and like everything here.The hotel, location and room were all perfect. The breakfast was excellent on the 6th floor rooftop garden restaurant with the nice view over Kathmandu city.The staff had warmth in their hospitality. They worked in making my stay very comfortable. They can help you to organised a city tour or any information you want with good price. Very friendly & very helpful; all in all I would definitely recommend to everybody.

I have a very good experience in this hotel as at the midnight of November 28, 2016 I was having unbearable pain and I had requested the front desk to call for an ambulance, the front desk officer had called for an ambulance for one of the best hospital in Kathmandu.

A little gem in Thamel

The hotel is cheap compared to others and we stayed int the suite which was spacious. Decor needs cleaning as there were marks in the room especially on the wall and on the shelves. Not much of a view as it is in Thamel so better to keep the curtains closed. The service offered was great and it is within walking distance to the centre of Thamel. Free Wifi which works and breakfast on the roof top terrace were other highlights. Staff were eager to help and gave you your space when needed. All in all a great hotel.

Lovely hotel with great staff at front desk. Room was good- Amazing shower pressure and extremely comfy bed. No safe in room and some damp. TV didn't work at any stage of our stay which was frustrating for EUROs. Have already rebooked this hotel for when we return to Kathmandu

I have been to nepal twice and i stayed in this hotel more than twice. The locations is in thamel and close to everything. Walking distance to the garden, museum, shopping plaza, even to durbar square and pashtupati. However, what impressed me more is the service, the cleanliness of the room, and the people that makes this hotel feels more than 3.5 stars.

In general a good location for a short hangout in Kathmandu. The room was totally ok and nice and differs from the normal boring room designs, what you find everywhere else. But due to earthquake and political situation there is shortage of gas and electricity in Nepal in general. This also affects the restaurant, TV and WIFI service. As a result you cannot blame the Hotel for this. We will book this hotel again when we go to Nepal next.

A Reasonable Stay for a Reasonable Price

Overall, Avataar is a good choice for travelers on a budget, but seeking to opt out of a shared room hostel situation.

You will have everything you need for a reasonable stay in Thamel- private bathroom, hot water, decent bed, TV, wi-fi.

A potential downside is the road at night, which I've had very uncomfortable encounters on. If you are a woman traveling alone, if you want to stay out late, Avataar might not be the best choice. There is always a group of men right at the entrance to the alleyway that the hotel is on- they are unpleasant during the day and get downright scary at night. Wish the hotel could clear them out somehow.

The rooms are good for the money and for $10 more than a shared-room hostel, you'll have a considerable upgrade with privacy.

In full disclosure, the rooms do have a strange smell- something of mixed paint and faint sewage. But this is not so extreme and can be dismissed.

Breakfast isn't great, so you might want to eat out. Very small glass of orange juice. Dry, cold toast with hard butter on the side (please melt the butter on the toast when you prep)!

Staff are friendly and seem to take their jobs seriously.

Amazing Hot Shower

I have lived in Kathmandu for over 3 years, but alas, do not yet have a gas heater or solar panels set up at home for hot shower water. It is for this reason that once a month or so, I scamper on over to Avataar for a bit of a rest and an amazing hot shower with great water pressure and consistent warm temperature.

If you need a place to stay in Thamel for a couple of nights, try Avataar! Everything else being comparable, Avataar beats the rest on the shower!

Good location and the room is clean. Water from the tap is not yellowish and water flow was great. Encounter a few times when power was shut for a few seconds but that doesn't create much of a problem. Breakfast buffet was a disappointment as choices were very limited. Staff were friendly and approachable.

Peace in noisy Thamel

After being in an other hotel in Kathmandu that was extremely noisy I moved to Avataar. It is a really clean nice hotel, everything looks new! The room I had was with a small kitchen and fridge, only the cooking equipment was a bit poor. The staff is really friendly and helpful. Only the roomservice is a bit slow.. but I would really recommend this hotel if you like to stay in Thamel but prefer some silence...

Basic but handy for shopping

The staff do their best to look after guests and were very pleasant and helpful. However, the rooms are fairly basic. My first room was damp and smelt bad. I changed rooms the next day. There was no microwave or hairdryer, as advertised, and the door to the balcony was jammed shut.The location is good - right in the heart of the Thamel area so shopping was easy. The free pick up from the airport was also welcome so that there was no need to haggle with taxi drivers.

Great place to stay in Thamel

I housed a team here while providing earthquake relief. The building is completely undamaged from the Nepal quakes. The staff are all super friendly and more than responsive to requests. The rooms are clean and comfortable, I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay.
The manager remembered us by name and warmly welcomed us each time we returned to the hotel.
On top of all this, the place was pretty luxurious, with a red carpet theme to it. Neon lights in the rooms were fun too. Would definitely stay here again.

the hotel is relatively new and in good shape, but due to earthquakes it was almost empty and some of the services like elevator, airport pick-up, cleaning, etc. either didn't work or were only partially operated (I have received from them a confirmation email, that somebody will meet me in the airport, but nobody was there...).

The hotel is in Thamel, the shopping and hotel area of Old Kathmandu. We left Nepal Neighborhood is safe and Hotel is decent. The stay was very pleasant. The staff is very friendly. We had breakfast included and was ok.

Much adoo about mediocre

My wife and I were surprised with the disparity we found in our experience and the vast majority of glowing recommendations for the hotel. We made our reservations based on the recommendations with a feeling that so many people couldn't possible be wrong.

We found our entire room to be damp, the bedding just seemed to be in a permanent state of dampness. The smell of mildew was quite strong, the breakfast not all that satisfying, and the blue lights in the room made it feel cheap and tawdry.

The location is good for shopping and restaurants and the hotel staff were helpful. So, take your chances...

Hotel Avaatar and Kathmandu Eco Hotel Compared

Hotel is located in the central of Thamel but not on a main street. There are laudramats, grocery stores, and countless restaurants and stores near by. Hotel is fairly new and rooms are quiet. Thamel is dusty so the hotel is not entirely immune. But the room is generally kept quite clean. The shower is hot and AC works. TV reception is not so good in both 2nd and 4th floors, but that's minor. The owner(?), an older man that hangs around the front desk, and Santos, are more helpful compared to others. Their rates for hiring a car to visit nearby world heritage sites in Kathmandu and just outside the city is slightly more than other places, but not unreasonable. The breakfast is ok and it's situated on the 6th floor in an open area which is nice. All in all, relatively happy with the stay there.

I also stayed at the Kathmandu Eco Resort hotel, which has a better (buffet) breakfast, but the rooms are not as good. It is located on the main street, extremely noisy at night (with a nightclub across). The water (from faucet in sink or in shower) has a sulfuric and bad taste, I won't even brush my teeth with that water. And, the hotel must have arrangements with multiple tour agencies because it's always a zoo filled with tourists. Lastly, the hotel has 5 floors and no elevator. That's a huge pain (even without luggage).

A couple 8 problem, but still a decent hotel.

Two bad things: sewer smell coming from bathroom drain & many meals listed on menu not available when ordered. Ordering food went something like this: I'll have the tender loan steak.\" \"Waiter: I'm sorry that is not available.\" Me: \"O. K. Then I'll take the roast chicken.\" After the third attempt to order dinner failed, I asked, okay, so what DO you have on your menu that your Chef can make?\" Answer: some Indian curries. Only one problem as a n in - veg eater, living in India for almost a year, I wanted some meat dishes. This happened each time we tried to eat dinner.
On the positive side- the hotel was clean modern, comfortable & the staff were all very nice

A new hotel with a lift (elevator), was a great feature for us as an older, disabled couple. It was a bit cold a couple of nights, & had some problems getting the AC unit to blow warm air. An additional frustration was the repeated refusal in the restaurant to serve dishes on their menu. They told us the first night that all they had were fish dishes or Indian curries. The chef had been in an accident & an untrained guy was taking his place. This problem persisted throughout the five nights we were there for the dinner menu. We give the hotel high marks in every other area and will probably stay there on our next semi annual trip to Katmandu. It is in the center of town.

We were a family of 7 on a short visit to Nepal. After reviewing various hotels and the guest reviews, made a reservation on one of the travel website. The hotel is clean, the personnel are very friendly and will do anything possible to ensure comfortable stay. In our group I had my 88 years mother who was treated exceptionally well. Mr. Jagdish even stayed back at the hotel overnight to ensure that my mother was ok whilst we went out to eat. Jeshon and all the other personnel in the restaurant and front desk were very helpful. Rooms were nice spacious and clean. They can also arrange local sightseeing tour packages at a very reasonable price (cheaper than the other travel agency in the area). Special thanks to Mr. Jagdish and the restaurant staff who made our special ginger/masala tea every day in the morning. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Kathmandu area of Nepal. You will not find a better place at an affordable rates.

Avataar hotel exceeded my expectations with respect to service, cleanliness and neighbourhood. The restaurant in the roof top was good and the complimentary breakfast was reasonable. The hotel is well located and one can stroll in & around Thamel for shopping. Staff were courteous and extended all help to arrange for site seeing.
Hotel.com advertisement mentioned city view for executive suite but our window was overlooking an adjacent building.
Anyone who prefer to stay in a busy area, Avataar is a great choice.

I had a great time. The staff are so friendly and couldn't do enough for me especially as a solo traveller. Renovations just completed and some still in progress. Clean, new and easily accessible to sights in Thamel and Kathmandu central. Nice simple breakfast menu and room service menu with the option to find fancier restaurants and options to eat close by.

- Free airport transfer, that even waited 2 hours when our flight was delayed.
- Bonus upgrade when the rooms we'd booked weren't ready yet.
- Fantastic staff that spoke fluent English without hard to understand accent.
- Able to book tours and domestic flights through reception at a discount and settle all payment at the end.
- Accepted American Express credit cards to settle charges at the end.
- Hotel is brand new, so has a couple of teething problems which should be sorted out quickly.
