We stayed at this hotel in November 2025 - myself, my father, and my teenaged son. Our entire stay was fantastic - the staff were lovely, accommodating, and helpful. The rooms were spacious and very well appointed, with comfortable beds, large bathrooms with lovely showers, plenty of storage, and more than enough space. The courtyard was a must after a day of navigating the streets of Kathmandu - a really beautiful and peaceful space to unwind. The hotel decor was fantastic, with lots of local art all over.

On the whole, I cannot say enough good things about this hotel - we loved it, and would absolutely stay here again if we return. We felt very well taken care of here.

One caveat - there are no elevators, so if you have a room on a higher floor be prepared for a lot of stairs (at least it preps you for trekking!).

Excellent hotel in Thamel. (My only complaint was there is no elevator.) Great staff, and breakfast room service was fast and hot. Laundry service same day. Right next to a busy Thamel street but a quiet retreat from the chaos around. I would definitely stay here again. 😁👍

The staff show a warm welcome and being very helpful and friendly all the time, and feeling safe staying in the hotel.
the restaurant/ bar have a pretty chill vibe and service is great!
They do good breakfast and coffee.

This hotel is a very charming, boutique hotel, very clean. Close to busy Thamel. if you want some quiet, 15-20 min. walkable to the garden of dreams, take a rickshaw to the Durbar, etc. Very convenient, lots of options to eat, the restaurant in this hotel is wonderful!

This is the perfect hotel for first time visitors to Kathmandu or anyone wanting to stay in Thamel. The city/neighborhood can feel very chaotic at times, and Dalai-La is such a wonderful escape. The courtyard is a perfect place to start the day with the hotel’s amazing breakfast options. The rooms are spacious with modern fixtures. We were given two large bottles of water in the room a day. The staff is simply wonderful! Binod specifically was very friendly and amazingly helpful. He gave us a number recommendations for things to do in and around Kathmandu as well as our next stay in Pokhara. He was also very helpful with the currency exchange. The location of the hotel is perfectly situated in Thamel to allow you to walk to numerous shops and restaurants. I would absolutely stay here again. My dad and I had a wonderful time!

I enjoyed Dalai la's integration and support of local artists. They have set aside part of their dining space as an impromptu gallery, allowing artists to present work and meet visitors and tourists. Dalai La also is part of Nepal 2020 tourisim campaign and had three giant 'Yeti' sculptures on display in their courtyard. Really fun place!

Wonderful hotel. The exterior is especially magnificent. And the hotel is full of world-class artwork by local artists. Restaurant is top shelf. Be sure to try the Nepalese thali. Only small strike against is that the courtyard can get a little loud at night. But this is Thamel. If you are a light sleeper, you will need earplugs at any hotel is this area. 100% recommend staying here.

Boutqiue Hotel in Heart of Tourist District

The hotel is well-situated in the tourist area of Kathmandu. Great customer service and clean room. I would have appreciated a refrigerator in the room, but not a deal breaker. One of the best breakfasts I've had at a small hotel. Overall a good experience.

Really like this hotel - The rooms in the ‘new’ building are my favorite. Very clean. Staff are very attentive and friendly. Good breakfast included too.
A few little fixes here and there maybe required ( showerhead in 303 needs attention - but he water was HOT ! )
It’s in a great location in Thamel ( right next to the best little bar in thamel - Sam’s Bar ) walkable to Durban Square - Garden of Dreams etc and about 500 Rupees taxi to the main temple / stupa sites
It may be a little overpriced - but I’ll be staying here again on my next trip to Kathmandu ! Thanks again Dalai La !!

I was given room on the 4th floor where there is no lift. It was tough to walk up specially. Room was clean and fairly good size however the hot water in shower was extremely hot I was burnt several times even though it was mixed with maximum cold water. Staffs were friendly and polite and they all speak very good English.

Lovely Stay in Thamel

I was instantly charmed by the courtyard of the Dalai-La. It was like a little oasis within the hustle and bustle of the touristy Thamel district. The location was convenient for sightseeing and it was close enough to the border of Thamel that one could easily grab a regular taxi rather than having to rely on the ones capable of operating in Thamel only. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was lovely and spacious.

Charming Boutique Hotel

The Dalai-La was a great choice. It's located right in the middle of the bustling area of Kathmandu but in it's private quiet area so you have the best of both. The staff was great and the breakfast was good. There is no elevator but the porters are more than willing to carry up your luggage. I would definitely return.

Quiet Oasis in Thamel

We really enjoyed our stay. We were upgraded to a superior suite — as long as we were willing to walk the five flights of stairs to the fourth floor. That was fine and we loved the room. The location can’t be beat. The inner courtyard is quite lovely and secluded enough from the noise of the street.

Our room fronted on the street and yes, being in Thamel, you can hear the partying going on up until around 1:00 a.m. when things finally start to quiet down. Even so, we slept well. The bed was very comfortable.

We had two complaints: 1) the shower was cold the first day, scalding hot the second day and perfect on the third day — so be sure to ask for it to be adjusted. 2) Breakfast was good and abundant made to order, but it was always a challenge to place an order as staff seemed unsure of the menu. Trying to get a second cup of tea was a comedy of errors. (Restaurant management, maybe there needs to be more training of staff to understand food terms in English and other common tourist languages?) Otherwise, we loved the place and the reception staff was exceptionally nice.

Wonderful, calm oasis in the middle of Thamel

We stayed at Dalai-La for 2 nights, but wish we'd stayed longer. The room we stayed in was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. It looked down on the inner courtyard and restaurant and was at the same level as the beautiful prayer flags criss-crossing between the roofs. Breakfast was excellent. The kitchen was very obliging in modifying their meals slightly to match our vegetarian needs! Travellers often talk about how friendly and helpful people/staff are in Nepal, but the staff at Dalai-La were exceptional. I was quite sick the evening we arrived - following a bumpy 8 hour drive from Chitwan. The hotel organised a doctor's appointment for me and one member of the staff guided us to the hospital and back. This was the perfect place to rest, recover, eat & sleep well. We would definitely come back and highly recommend it to potential guests.

amazingly quiet for a busy location

The Dalai-La is a nice boutique hotel in a chaotic tourist part of Kathmandu. It's amazingly quiet. Our room was comfortable and clean. The included breakfast buffet was not super appealing to me, but then I figured out you could order off the breakfast menu which was much more to my taste. The food was very good. We ate dinner there too.

This hotel is great. Stayed for 2 weeks in August 2016 and a few days in July 2017 while on work trips. Can't recommend enough - food is good, hotel is comfortable, the main outdoor patio is a great place to have breakfast or relax after a long work day. Hotel staff are very nice and accommodating. Wifi is consistent. Can't ask for a better place to be.

Beat my high expectations

I had just stayed at the best of the budget hotels in Thamel for about half the price - and those hotels met all of your basic needs. I decided to splurge at the end for Dalai-la and it didn't disappoint. The staff was very accommodating (upgraded room, extra water), the breakfast was better, there was a nice yoga and a weight room for such a small hotel. The room and balcony were much better than in the budgets. My biggest, maybe only complaint, would be that the hot water in the shower was a bit erratic (too hot, too cold), but I would definitely stay again.

A bit of luxury in the midst of the chaos of Thamel. Staff was amazing the the room was clean and comfortable. Food and service in the restaurant was also amazing. My room was on the 5th floor and there are no elevators, but I kind of enjoyed the exercise. If you don't want the additional leg work out and cardio, then you might request a room on a lower floor....All in all was a great stay and I would stay there again next time I come through Kathmandu. Also I have to say the Wi-Fi is AMAZING, which is rare in Kathmandu.

It was first time for me to visit Nepal but staying this hotel give me a bit relief from the caos of India life. The outlook is good, we can feel some spiritual atmosphere. I enjoyed late breakfast at hotel garden under the sun. Many flags and blue sky on the head, i could be relaxed.
The hotel staff was very friendly and kind,helped us renting umbrellas for sudden rain.
The hotel is located at very convenient area at Tamel street but a little bit away from Main Street and gate is locked at night. So we did not suffer from noise and any danger at night.

Room is average comparing with Europe or other advanced countries but is more than South Asia.
