Rooms were clean and surprisingly very spacious. Bed was absolutely comfortable. Option to have breakfast in the room was a bonus. Only drawback was staff was not as attentive. Not very welcoming at check-in, service was slow at dinner, overall staff did not come across as friendly. We had to ask for assistance/attention at check in, despite staff seeing us being dropped off with luggage or to be served at dinner and by the pool, which we found to be a bit off putting

This is an absolutely beautiful place. Highly recommend the picnic and exploring the grounds. 1 night was not enough. Room was large and the bathroom was fantastic - that tub! the outdoor seating was nice to enjoy a wine. Restaurant breakfast was delicious.

Charming luxury family owned hotel and winery.

This is a beautiful hotel, just renovated and reopened in March 2025 in one of Stellenbosch’s oldest wineries. We enjoyed the knowledgeable wine tasting by Sommelier Tyson who also assisted us with a fine wine at the charming open kitchen restaurant. Everything is farm to table, fresh and excellent. Enjoyed the walks and the art installations as well. The service was so outstanding, we only had to mention we needed something to have someone immediately appear to help.

A Wonderful Stay

The hotel has just been renovated and you can really tell, everything was beautiful and fresh. The room was lovely, roomy and the bed was very comfortable and it was a pleasant surprise to have a mini-bar with complimentary drinks included.
The stay comes with a complimentary wine tasting and I'd recommend taking this, Tyson was so knowledgeable and passionate. We had a LOT of wine tastings while in Stellenbosch and Franschoek and this was the most informative one we had.
The breakfast was amazing, a lovely cold spread with a great selection of hot foods and really nice coffee. We didn't eat in the main restaurant as we'd booked a local fine-dining restaurant months in advance and were fine-dining-ed out so went to Vadas, the smokehouse within the hotel grounds for the other night. This is a 5 min stroll and was fantastic, really good smokehouse food with brilliant waiting staff and of course, great wine.
The grounds are fantastic for exploring and the pool is a lovely place to while away a few hours with an extensive and well priced food, cocktail and wine list.
We would (and hopefully will!) happily return

Wonderful relaxing holiday

The Spier is a lovely vineyard with good accommodation. They are now starting a complete renovation of the hotel and keeping all their staff on as part of the plan . I have always felt completely safe and cared for within the hotel grounds . A wonderful breakfast in the sunshine is the perfect way to start the day . There are many things to do swimming , cycling , walking , visit the hotel vegetable garden and see the birds enroute . I look forward to visiting Spier next year after its renovation

Fabulous stay, looking forward to returning next year. Very friendly & helpful staff, beautiful grounds with so much to do, stunning art work every where Excellent food & drink everywhere many locally produced.
Spacious, immaculate double room, on top of 2 storey block of 4 rooms. Bathroom in our room was vintage in style but well maintained and immaculately clean with double shower, bath and 2 basins. They're undergoing a refurb in March to upgrade these rooms. We had access to 1 off the 6 outdoor pools shared by small group of rooms as well as main hotel pool. Lots to do on site- wine tasting, craft market - run by the artists eagles, Segway tours, river walk, cycling, picnics small well equipped gym, spa also family friendly with a kid's club & play area etc. Enjoy!

Bad reception service

Booked a luxury room with a single and double bed. The room only had a king size bed, we asked reception to change it and they said they would. We went to the bar, then went back to the room before dinner and the nothing had been changed. We rang reception again and they sent 2 people over who told us you can have 2 bed in the apartment. I showed them the booking that said a double and single bed included. They then said call reception which we did again and they said they’d take care of it. When we returned after dinner it wasn’t change so I slept on the sofa. I’ve stayed there before with wife and kids with 3 beds in a room so they clearer just couldn’t be bothered. I must say all staff at the bar, restaurants, wine tasting and hotel porters were excellent though.

Back for the 7th time!

My wife and I have been staying at The Spier since 2004. As usual the staff were welcoming and friendly and we had a lovely meal in the restaurant one evening. We love being able to walk on the estate in a safe and secure environment. Our one disappointment is the fact that the big screen in the bar area had been removed so what used to be the focal point in the evening and where guests would gather for a nice drink and a chat had gone.

This was our first visit and stay at The Spier Hotel.
First we entered the gate and seen this beautiful calm space with plenty of trees and flowers. Welcome wine at the lobby was also nice. The access to our room was also good, however if it was raining then it might be little tough to the room.(there was no rain during our stay).
Room was quiet and clean and modern design. Fire place was also nice thing to have.
Wine tasting, bakery, craft shop was fun experience. Restaurant was fantastic, taste really good and the staff was friendly and professional.
We would like to visit again!

Would definitely recommend!!

I stayed here for a wedding and had an absolutely amazing stay. The staff were so kind and helpful and the room was the best I have stayed in…ever. I always struggle with triple rooms because I always find the room becomes cramped and more claustrophobic with the additional bed, but not here. It still had so much floor space, which was great with all the luggage.
Also having our own garden area and shared pool was lovely, alongside the double sinks in the bathroom. I honestly could not have asked for more. The decor was quaint and fitting. I also went to the spa which was a treat.

I’m not much of a wine drinker which is a shame as thats what Stellenbosch is known for, so the complimentary bottle on arrival sadly went to waste. It was a wonderful touch though!

We loved Spier Hotel.
I was a little suspicious as I don't like big commercial resorts/wine farms, but Spier Hotel was absolutely perfect; we booked for Easter Weekend and there were so many things to do for kids. The staff were really good.
We had a riverside terrace room, beautiful big room; the bathroom is a little dated but totally adequate, and a good powerful shower! We could hear the people in the room upstairs, especially when they were moving chairs etc...but it wasn't too bad (and I usually hate neighbouring noise!). The bottle of wine in the room was a nice touch, as well as a little easter egg hamper for our daughter. The estate itself is just stunning, very well kept grounds, beautiful walks and if you have time, get free bikes at reception and do the 5km ride around the grounds early morning, it's so beautiful! Night market was a nice little bonus too. All in all, we would not hesitate to book this hotel again!

Thank you for a wonderful stay at the Spier Hotel. My wife and I and our 8-month old baby spent a leisure weekend at the hotel. Everything was in order from the moment we checked in, and all the staff very friendly and helpful. A baby cot was already in place without any requests being made from our side. The restaurants on site including Vadas and the pop-up store were phenomenal. Dining at the hotel restaurant was fantastic and the continental breakfast included a nice spread. A specific word of appreciation to the hotel managers, Bridget and Jillian and the waitress Lusanda who tried everything possible to accommodate us and our 8-month baby. The rooms were clean and the various walks/views picturesque. The avaiability of various on-site activities including the wine tasting/ animal encounters/ segway tours definitely adds to the experience. A truly enjoyable getaway.

Spent 3 nights in a garden view room, it was our 8th time to visit the hotel and it didn't disappoint. Food was the most disappointment. Only two of four restaurants were opened, the service was very low level except breakfast restaurant. In the restaurants, they have lot of servers but only few were working or available to give services. They must maintain or renew explanations concerning their expositions of arts, we couldn’t read almost nothing. They also must provide information for the activities available around. The time table for wine tasting is not good because they start at morning and finish at 16h, we preferred to do healthy activities like cycling or hiking at morning and finish the day with wine tasting at evening. They don’t maintain well bicycles neither cycling roads & indications. We rent 4 bicycles and needed small repairs during the course, and indication panels were broken, we couldn’t make cycling of 10km so we only did around nearest the hôtel. The qualities of their wine were standards except Chenin Blanc comparing French, Spanish, Chilean or Argentinian wines.

Spier for honeymoon

My husband and I stayed 1 night on our honeymoon and wished we could have stayed longer. The hotel was beautiful and the ground were much larger than we expected. We loved walking the river walk and seeing all the beautiful flowers and birds. The hospitality of the hotel was spectacular! They left us a bottle of wine, a congratulatory dessert, and decorated our bed with rose petals! It was very romantic and greatly appreciated. We will definitely be back!

We went for an overnight for the mountain bike race and was delightfully surprised to have such a private space especially it being a hotel. We loved the \"flatlet\" style of the rooms which is much more private than the normal hotel rooms. Spier is the oldest wine making estate in South Africa and the hotel is a reflection of this heritage. Expect beautiful grounds, historic buildings and spacious rooms. They pride themselves on delivering great customer service, starting with the welcome glass of wine at checkin. All the restaurants offer amazing food, though Vadas Smoke House and Bakery was my favourite.

I would definitely recommend Spier and hope I get another chance to stay there again.

Wiseguy at the hotel was very helpful, went above and beyond for us with regards to our little kids needs etc. Free Play Center where you can leave your kids for a few hours meant we had a bit of holiday too... We booked another night at the end of our trip as everyone looked after us so well and it’s so close to the airport.

The rooms were very spacious and the reception areas and bars were beautiful.

Reception booked us a table at Eight restaurant and when we arrived we were told that they were only open for a private function and could not accommodate us. We were very disappointed and had organised our whole day around this.

A great location set in wonderful grounds with many activities to enjoy. Eight restaurant was outstanding but need to book. When we stayed we used the Pool which was lovely with lots of fresh water on tap to drink which is welcome.
Breakfast staff polite but took a while for tables to clear and there seem to be no organization with the staff which needs addressing. Evening meal on Monday was not great...bread arrived half way through meal and sirloin sent back due to all fat! Apart from that we can’t fault reception staff . We are due back at the end of our holiday for two days of R & R

Relaxing family stay

This was our third stay at Spier and the staff and quality of the accommodation were as great as our previous stays. The check-in process was efficient, the room was large and comfortable (even with two children staying with us) and dinner and breakfast were excellent. We particularly enjoyed the music which accompanied our evening meal and we all loved having a go on the African drums!

Overall, we would definitely return and hope to do so in the near future.

Fantastic quasi-resort super close to Cape Town airport and Stellenbosch. We stayed two nights and didn't feel the need to leave at all, enjoying the wine tasting, pool and beautiful grounds. Hotel restaurant did great breakfast and we also enjoyed dinner there (hubby ordered the ostrich steak both nights). Only negative comment is that the bathroom is a little tired but clean. We would happily return for a relaxing weekend.

Nice, but noisy while refurbishing

Hotel is okay, staff is good and amenities are above average.

Best things were: 1) Spier offer all in one (Hotel, Spa, Restaurant, attractions, Wine tasting & farm experiences,....) & 2) the kids care area is greate (Precious).

What didn’t work? They are refurbishing some areas and awoke us up early morning 2 days in a roll (hammering and knocking), nothing was done till third day, then we lost 2 mornings of our stay. Management did nothing till the third day.
