Hotel Hecht is an excellent Appenzell hotel for travelers. We stayed three nights. Our room was recently updated and on the quiet back side of the building. Breakfast was included so we started each day with a good self serve continental breakfast. Because we were staying for three nights we were provided a “Appenzell Visitor Card”. It covered our local travel on train and bus, admission to museums and the Hoher Kasten cable car. The hotel manager, kitchen manager and all the staff were friendly, attentive and accommodating.

Great Location in a Lovely Town

We would have rated this hotel a 4.5 -- it fell just short of 5 because of a few quirks. But the location is ideal for staying in Appenzell -- near the heart of town but just off the busiest streets. The staff were very helpful. The included breakfast was quite nice. Our room looked out onto a rooftop and a wall, with a peekaboo view of the lovely countryside, and getting to it required climbing a few stairs.

Excellent, very helpful staff. A super room (we were upgraded) with sinks in the large bedroom and the WC. Up-to-date, but with beautiful wood joinery. Fine breakfast, with a gluten-free option. Elevator and library and a good location a few hundred yards from the main square. No restaurant, but there are many others nearby, including at their partner Hotel Romantic Santis on the main square. Has a same-day laundry service. Only drawback is lack of parking, but you can stop in front to load and unload, then park in the public parking.

Our stay was wonderful. The room was clean and spacious. The sister hotel, Hotel Romantik Santis, was also excellent. The sauna is located offsite (not at Hecht) but was easy to reserve. Also, I highly recommend the restaurant at Santis. The food, wine menu, and service were outstanding.

Wonderful. Wonderful location to the train, town squares, restaurants and shopping. The staff were very kind and intuitive. They met all our needs. The breakfast was perfect for us and great coffee.
We reserved a triple and the hotel upgraded us to a spacious triple with a view of the mountains.
I highly recommend.

Great hotel!

This was a really nice hotel. It was very clean and comfortable. Excellent location. Breakfast buffet was also very good. Our room was beautiful. It was directly across from the church. Be forewarned that the bells of the church chime throughout the day/night. One bell for 15 min after the hour, 2 bells on the 1/2 hour, three bells 45 minutes after the hour then on the hour. Ask for a room in the back. There was an issue with parking. One lot close to the hotel is one hour. The other lot closed after the weekend to set up for a celebration. Our car was towed. We paid $318 for the fine. The staff was polite, friendly and very helpful.

Fantastic location, very clean and spacious!

Very friendly staff, rooms were very large and modern. Breakfast had a nice selection of local cheeses! Useful tip, minibar is in the hallway (honor system). One thing to know for very light sleepers, church bells ring all night in Appenzell (and church is across the street :). Overall excellent and will stay there again!

Good hotel & breakfast; check-in time not accurate

The hotel was very clean and had nicely updated rooms. Breakfast was yummy and coffee was delicious. Appenzell is very small and so this hotel is well situated to all amenities- train station, restaurants, tourist office. We arrived on a Saturday and, to our surprise, a lot was closed in town. However, we wanted to hike up Ebenalp so decided we’d check into the hotel quickly and be on our way.

When we booked Hotel Hecht online, it said check-in started at 7am.We specifically looked for a hotel that had either early check-in or luggage storage because we were coming straight from the airport that morning. When we arrived around 10am we were told check in wasn’t until 3 Pm. When I showed them the booking they said there weren’t any rooms ready (which was unfortunate, but I understand) but that we could leave our luggage in a room by the main entrance. This room was not locked and the door was wide open, despite another couple storing their luggage in there. We weren’t comfortable leaving it unlocked, especially since the front desk isn’t always staffed, so, reluctantly, we took our backpacks to Ebenalp with us on a hike. The hike was pretty strenuous and the luggage made the trek even more difficult. Unfortunately, I ended up with a knee strain because of the downhill hike with the backpack. We didn’t want to waste a whole day to check in at 3PM, but my injury has really put a damper on the latter parts of our trip

Very helpful receptionist. We showed up after hours and our keys were wait for us at the counter. The receptionist even came to great us (even tho it was after hours) and was very helpful providing information about the local area. Room was clean and comfortable!

Breakfast was amazing, very attentive breakfast service. Other than the church bells the hotel very quiet and clean. Very well kept. Great location. General manager very accommodative, flew all night she allowed an early check-in put us in room away from the bells. Shower was great. Although didn't have a restaurant for dinner they had a sister hotel not far away with great food. Hecht gave us drink voucher for free drink to encourage us to go there. It was worth it. Good parking nearby. Very nice people wouldn't hesitate in staying there again.

Good hotel, but church bells ring loudly and often

As others have said, the church bells are loud and ring often--every 15 minutes, in fact. I even counted about 130 rings at 6:30 a.m. While this is no fault of the hotel, if you are a light sleeper you may want to choose a hotel farther from the church.

Location of this hotel to the Bernina Express/Glacier Express train station is super convenient. Hotel is located on edge of old town and rooms were clean and quiet, even though you face the streets in some rooms. Check-in/Check-out was convenient and breakfast that is included is one of the best we enjoyed on our 16 days in Switzerland

Great location & staff, but room hot

We stayed here 3 nights and loved the room which had its own huge top level patio/balcony (room 460). Beds were comfortable with a very nice size new TV. Bathroom was large and updated and the breakfast had a daily good variety of items with fresh eggs to order available in the shell. Location very close to public parking which is a bit annoying to have to feed a meter each day from 8 am to 8 pm. The rooms do not have their own fridge but they do have a community mini bar where you can take cold drinks including beer for 4 CH on the honor system. Staff were extremely helpful and got us buckets of ice several times per day as they do not have an ice machine available directly to guests. The only real negative was that their really is no air conditioning, certainly the guest can change. As it was in the 80's during our stay, the room was hot and they do not have any fans in the room or available for use. I realize they probably don't need air conditioning often, but it would have made a big difference in the comfort for our trip.
Overall loved the hotel.

Wonderful hotel in a lovely town

We had a wonderful stay at the Hecht Hotel in Appenzell. The rooms were huge by European standards, and the bathroom was incredibly large with both a bathtub and separate shower. Everything seemed brand new--the furnishings and window treatments were spotless. The included breakfasts were excellent and the staff very helpful. We asked for ice each night and it was brought to our room. We stayed 3 nights and had a fantastic time exploring the area. If you stay at least 3 nights, you get an Appenzell Card good for free train travel in the region (buses, too) and some free rides on mountain cable cars and an alpine slide. This saved us quite a bit of money--basically paid for one night's stay. There was also internet included for no extra charge, and it was fast and reliable. We would totally recommend this hotel to anyone. One previous reviewer had an issue with the church bells ringing across the street, but we didn't hear them at all. We do sleep with our windows closed, and use a white noise app on our phone, but we truly didn't hear the bells. We also had a room in the back of the hotel--if you had one directly across from the church (front of hotel), you may hear them more. You can always request a room in the back if you think it might bother you. There is no A/C, so if you're there in the summer, you may want to leave your windows open at night. Also, we were told the bells don't ring after 9 pm and we never heard them before 8 am, when we were eating breakfast.

Lovely hotel, super friendly staff

The location is GREAT on the main road in Appenzell. The staff is super friendly and helpful in suggestion things to do. The breakfast was very good as well.

The only to be aware of (which wasn't a negative for us) is the Church right across the street rings its bells until pretty late and again at 6:30 am. They are awesome bells, but very loud. That being said, my wife is a light sleeper and this didn't seem to bother her. It did wake me at 6:30 am however, but that's not a problem if your an early riser.

Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel. It's not the Ritz, but its super comfortable and quaint.

I would definitely stay there again.

This place was excellent. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The breakfast was so good. All of the different cheeses of Appenzell were there at breakfast. We were given a welcome beverage upon our arrival. The hotel is directly across from the old town church and on the main street. It was like a fairy tale. The rooms were spacious and immaculately clean and the shower in the bathroom was very state-of-the-art.

Splendid stay! I couldn't have asked for a nicer welcome, a cleaner nor more comfortable room for my first visit to my Grandmother's birthplace: Appenzel. Lovely people, and breakfast was lovely, too. The only thing that made me nervous, realizing my room opened directly onto the big Catholic church and it's chiming bell, was that it might go on all night long. Rest easy, they don't ring chimes after the 9 o'clock, or was that the quality of those double-pane windows? ; ) Highly recommended!

Superb in general

Superb in general, a very good extension of experience in Appenzell, including complimentary drinks n biber. There's an art piece in front of the hotel in the middle of the street, best restaurant in town(by trip advisor n real experience supports it) and the beer factory/museum right across the parking of the hotel.

Excellent for Switzerland

We all know how Switzerland likes to charge triple what everyone else in the neighbouring countries do. I guess if I have to pay $350 to $400 per night for a place to sleep, this hotel would be one of my choices. Good breakfast, friendly staff and located in an amazing area of Switzerland. I would keep going here if it didn't cost so darn much. Unfortunately, I probably won't be returning.... It's just to much $$$ to justify.

Smashing place. Such friendly staff. A short walk from the station - easy to drag suitcases. Good sized rooms. Received a voucher for a free drink each at their partner hotel in the next road. The bells were in evidence from the local churches - but it was Saturday evening. Not nearly as bad a noise as i was expecting from other reviews. Didn't ring through the night! Plentiful breakfast.

Wonderful 10 day in a Fantastic Village

I was greeted with a very Friendly ,knowable,young woman,whom what and showing personal care when she never saw me at Breakfast for two and called to see if I was Ok! That was a very Special touch. The referral I read in Canada when I booked ,they had mentioned only problem was bells, I assumed cow,or sheep bells which I,enjoy at night but to my surprise it was Church Bells,and I was her for all of Easter Weekend those are Bells from the Catholic Church! A Ringing of Joy! After a couple nights I could sleep threw them,walking the village at night alone ,No Problem! Everywhere I found and met many friendly people,to the point I didn't, want to leave the village.
Everything in walking distance or if you stay 3 days you get free pass for bus and mountain tours and many museums perfect deal for Free which costs usually. Excellent Place I will be back next year! Thank You for Exceptional service!! They are a Partnership with the Romanik Hotel Santis where the evening meals are fantastic! Breakfast at Hotel Hecht was abundant with many varieties at everyday breakfast,close to train station 200 metres walking. Rhonda. K.

Bis auf das, das Hotel an sich keine Parkplätze hat und man auf dem öffentlichen Parkplatz in der Nähe parken muss war der Aufenthalt einsame Spitze. Ich würde allem anderen 5/5 Punkten geben. Ich bin einfach restlos zufrieden und werde mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit noch ein mal zum Urlaub machen vorbei kommen.

Schöne, moderne Zimmer - zentral gelegen

War zum 2. Mal im Hecht. Das Zimmer war einwandfrei und modern eingerichtet. Grosszügige Grösse des Zimmers und Bad. Das Bett war äusserst bequem. Frühstücksbüffet reichhaltig in einem heimeligen Raum.
