We stayed on our last night in Iceland. The rooms are albeit old fashioned, for a 1 night stay, it's decent. There's a restaurant and the breakfast was nice. This is very close to all the great falls around that area and you can see northern lights right above the hotel. We saw northern lights in Vik and here on the second day. It was beautiful and they also have places you can scan and go to watch the Aurora. 2 hours from the international airport.

Located just off the main coastal route is convenient but located in basically an industrial area - not scenic. Rooms are clean and functional but although we did not have a major problem ourselves it was obvious that room sound proofing is not the best. I would recommend asking for a first floor room as we had a small herd of elephants above us - luckily they went to bed quickly :)
Dining room was nothing like it looked on the website - fine for breakfast but not an evening meal. We never ate in the evening so can not comment on the food standard. Breakfast was plentiful and adequate.
Hot tubs were present in a central courtyard but not inviting which was a pity.
If looking for a basic pit stop this hotel would suffice.

The costumer service was terrible.
I forgot my baby mattress and no one let me know that is was left behind. I was in another part of the country when i realized it was gone
My friend went to pick it up at lunch the day after.
My mattress was in the lobby and the staff would not hand it over because they where having lunch.
They made my friend watch them eating a few feet away right next to my property for 30 minutes.
More people needed assistance, the hotel was paralized because it was lunch time.
Beware costumers to avoid this hotel or not need assistance while there, the staff is unreliable and unfit for service work.

Hotel Hvolsvollur was fantastic. After seeing that check in closed at 10pm, I emailed to inform the hotel that we might be a little later than 10pm due to picking up our car rental and being new to the Icelandic roads. The hotel were very accommodating and emailed back quickly to say they would stay open for us. We really appreciated the hospitality after such a long and tiring day! The staff were very friendly, warm and welcoming. The rooms were clean, spacious and very comfortable bed! We also enjoyed our breakfast in the morning which has a nice variety of food and drinks. Over-all we loved this hotel and would stay again!

A little gem of a hotel in a little town. Friendly front desk staff, a very sizable room, and within walking distance to restaurants. A dip in the hot tub before bed was just the way to end a long day of sightseeing. Very comfortable beds, very clean facility. Excellent spread for breakfast. My only regret was we couldn't stay longer.

Lovely hotel, great staff, warm welcome.

This was a lovely place to stay. The receptionist who checked us in was absolutely wonderful. We came late and he waited for us. He was just lovely and a really nice welcoming face after a long day’s journey. The hotel room is super clean and comfortable. They had blackout curtains which was super helpful in the summer. We only stayed one night and it was a perfect stopover to the glacial lagoon.

Great place to stop as you’re traveling to Golden Circle. Not much around the hotel everything is over 40 minutes to drive to so proper planning is required. Staff is excellent, restaurant is great and the overall hotel is fairly new and modern.

Check in was easy and straightforward. Parking was sufficient. My room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel looks outdated and there was a lot of paint chipping, etc. Had the feel of a budget highway motel in the USA (I have no issues with either, but you can tell they don’t prioritize upgrading the place). I could not find any outlets in the hotel room to use, all were occupied by the few lights in the room and seemed to be painted into place. There was a small tv, a table and chairs and blackout curtains. The breakfast buffet had a huge selection and was vegetarian friendly. The staff was attentive to replacing items when they ran out (coffee, etc).

The rooms need a little updating. The personnel is extremely helpful and kind. There are some hot tubs, not really good for children. Breakfast was great, Smjör and croissants was my favorite part. The bath feels like a Japanese type tub. Parking is scarce but they have extra parking at a different lot.

We are on a road trip and needed a place to sleep. This hotel disappointed us because we needed a clean, easy, fast hotel where we can trust and relax. Like every single other hotel we have been so far. It has potential but the bathroom was kind of nasty, the shower door was broken, wouldn't close, the drain inside the shower wouldn't drain, so you have a lot of water accumulating, forcing you to turn off the shower few times to be able to complete the shower. The green carpet had a lot of stains, I didn't even walked with my socks on, only with shoes. Breakfast was absolutely sad, if you have any food restrictions or allergies, you won't be able to eat anything. 2 types of bread, dripped coffee, tea, boxed suice, some cereal, really looking sad watermelon and dried orange, had some other things as well, but they looked awful, all processed food. They could add some items so easy and make everybody happy. But the staff were kind and sweet. That was a huge plus! They made the hotel. My point is, no I would not stay there again, but if they improve and update somethings, sure, I'm just sleeping and leaving... Oh, the bathtubs were broken.

The staff was very helpful and they were also very accommodating. They said that they only had rooms with twin beds and that the only way to have a double would be to push them together which was a little uncomfortable.

Breakfast was pretty good, and they were one of the few places on our journey that had \"Peunat Butter\".

Enjoyed this hotel very much. it is modern, beautiful and had everything we needed. it had dinner buffet for 2990 ISK which we didn't try because we didn't know, but the breakfast buffet was free and delicious. It had cold and hot food, pretty much everything. We enjoyed the two hot tubs as well; they were unique.

We stayed one night and checked in around 8:30 PM. The check-in process was quick and the desk attendant was friendly and helpful. The room was large and the bed very comfortable. The furnishings were simple as is typical in Iceland. The breakfast (free) had lots of selection and was a great plus to the value of the stay. They had various cereals, pancakes, boiled eggs, fish, fruit, breads and jellies. Drinks included coffee, tea, at least 2 juices and milk. We used this location to stay near Vik, without paying the high price of staying in Vik. It's near some great sites, including a waterfall and is only about an hour drive from Vik.

Arrive early! It stays light out and it’s easy to lose track of time. We got there at 9 pm - didn’t realize that check in ended at 8. Hotel staff were courteous but not happy with us. Hotel Restaurant closed at 9. In fact, pretty much everything was closed by 9. We found a restaurant nearby that was open until 10 but closed the kitchen at 9:30 so we had the option of soup or pizza. Much better than nothing!

This was by far the largest hotel room we had out of 7 hotels in Iceland. The room had 4 twin beds, a desk, wardrobe, and a full size sectional sofa and coffee table. This was also the only hotel room to have a refrigerator. Beds were comfortable. Room had best black out curtains of all hotels also. Our only complaints might be no elevator- my 75 year old mother had a little trouble carrying suitcase upstairs. The shower/bathtub enclosure was very tall making it difficult for her to step in and out (even a little high for me). Breakfast was more than adequate. They had toast with numerous fresh jellies and peanut butter, a pancake maker, 3 lunch meats, cheese, hard boiled eggs, herring, yogurts, dry cereal, sausage and beans. We were very happy with our experience here.

A few tidbits about Iceland hotels in general: Towels are placed on your bed, not in the bathroom so try to remember to take it in with you! All hotels seem to have tiny sinks, just a little basin mounted to wall with no counter space for your toiletry bag. They do not use top sheets; they have a down like blanket in duvet cover which gets very warm so I recommend turning the radiator down for sleeping. Curtains generally can't block all the light (except this hotel was excellent in that regard) so if you need total darkness to sleep bring an eye mask. They don't have washcloths. All the twin beds were extra long which my 6' 5\" son appreciated but the blanket wasn't long enough.

The room was smaller than the picture suggests, with the bed in the short L-shape portion of the room, leaving little room on either side of the bed. The heavy drapes were positioned in front of the sole source of heat and the drapes lacked any means of easily ensuring the heat entered the room, instead of heating the outside windows. The breakfast buffet offered slightly more options than other hotels. If you have limited mobility, be aware that the hotel did not offer an elevator. While my room was relatively quiet, another couple in my group had a room located just off the stairs and they complained of the noise, so be aware.

Overall the room was fine with the exception of the bathtub. It's a tube with a built in seat that if you are not careful getting in and out you can slip and hurt yourself. The restaurant is awful. It is designed around food for buses tours that are low budget. Better to go anywhere else.

Disappointing Stay

This hotel is off of the main road and abuts a neighborhood. Not such a bad thing, except that the room windows look directly (10 feet away) into the back yard and back entrances of private homes.
The room smelled, almost like they’ve tried to make a previous smoking room into a non-smoking room by trying to cover the smell.
The shower was old, and didn’t drain, so by the time I was done, I was standing in ankle deep water.
Staff was nice, though when we checked in, we were told that the dinner buffet started at 7:00pm. When we came down for dinner, they were serving the group that was staying there, and that we couldn’t eat until they were done (so, we’d have to wait until 25 or so student travelers were finished). We ended up going out to eat and were back before they’d even finished.
Overall, a disappointing stay.

Checkin was easy and the staff were friendly and the breakfast was pretty good, but the facilities are much older than the other hotels we stayed in in Iceland, particularly the newer ones in the south and east. The rooms were pretty clean, but they smelled a little old and the shower door was rickety. We would suggest staying in a guesthouse-style hotel in a smaller town. Those were really wonderful all around. Also, the hotel is on a main road which isn't noisy, but there is a lot of light compared to the hotels in smaller towns.
