The hotel is in an old building but clean with good internet. The breakfast was provided in the room and was just what we needed. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the town centre. Excellent and we hope to return

Although the host was charming, the accommodation was not. The room was so small, you had to squeeze around the bed to get to the bath. There was a table and 2 chairs wedged between the bed and the wall. What once was a closet housed a toaster, coffee maker and small fridge. ‘Breakfast’ was a do it yourself in the room with packaged rolls, slices of bread, two cartons of yogurt, juice and milk. This would have been ok if spread on a sideboard down stairs but not in the room. There was no shower, only a tub. The room was at the top floor, up 3 very steep, very narrow flights of stairs. We weren’t given the WiFi password and attempts to reach someone were fruitless. The decor hasn’t been updated in decades.
One or two of these could have been tolerated but combined made for a nightmare stay.
We left after 2 nights of a 5 night booking.

The owner/manager who checked me in was very nice. The building is old and charming, plus it was very clean. It's a convenient location for the local area.

The hotel is clean the staff friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast in your room is well supplied and although querky in a good way was a very pleasant suprise we were in a room on the third floor which although smaller then we were use to was able to have twin beds a bedside cabinet a large wardrobe and a breakfast table a fridge and chairs without looking overcrowded The shower and bathroom adjoining was first class. We will certainly use this hotel again

Bed was extremely uncomfortable and both my husband and I had very little sleep. I booked this hotel as it had a good write up for the food evening meal. Not open at all neither was the bar. Room although looked clean there were areas which a lot of dust was evedent blind and fan. For example. We left early this morning so my hubby could go back to bed where we were considering staying for 2 nights originally. We found hotel quirky and we solved the food issue by eating elsewhere but lack of sleep is a no no from poor quality bed.

This is a very small, not very modern place. If you like things a bit quirky, this might be perfect for you, but for me I wasn't keen on turning up at the stated check in time to find the front door locked and no one answering. I left and came back and did manage to find someone to let me in who was very chatty throughout check in. The room was clean and comfortable, but up two flights of extremely narrow stairs and had a bathroom which had no shower, not even a handheld over the bathtub. I don't remember seeing any info about this during booking, had I known I would have tried to opt for a room with a shower as I can't take baths at the moment due to fresh tattoos. The car park is miniscule, understandably given the hotel's location, but with eight rooms and only enough space for six cars - three of them blocked in by the others - I imagine there have been parking issues in the past. The idea of breakfast items in the mini fridge so you can sort yourself out in the morning is a reasonably good one, although the toaster in the cupboard did feel like a bit of a fire hazard. Overall it was a decent one-night stay for a fair price if you don't mind a battle to actually get in the door in the first place.

Really nice place. Friendly and very helpful. Only a one night stay this time which was a pity because I enjoyed a longer stay last time and would have liked to stay a bit longer this time. The restaurant is closed on Mondays but plenty of other options a short walk away in the high street. I would ahve liked to eat at Candlesticks though becuase the food there was excellent last time.

The hotel was in a good location and there was parking. The person that met us was friendly enough. The whole place could do with bringing up to a better standard, especially as we paid quite a lot. The bar wasn’t open and it was very dark in there. Breakfast was cereal, yogurt and toast which was in the room.

A previous (less than flattering) review in October 2024, with photographs, show that NOTHING has been done to renovate the decor of the room that I also stayed in. It appears that in 2023 it was the same! Sadly, I sense some unacceptable flannel from the host? I could say a lot more, but I’ll simply say, that if you are planning on staying at Candlesticks, consider before paying in advance and look at your room/inside the premises before you commit. Shame, the experience was disappointing for a number of reasons.

This was a real find, being in the town, local to the railway station and to my appointment in St Mary's Hill. i needed only a small space and had that. I was out a lot over two days so the room was good for sleeping, breakfasting and overnight storage. All mod cons. Shower excellent. The internal stairs and corridors of living in the exceptionally old building pleased me. I'd stay again.

We only met the host at the of day 2, but he was really nice and we had a good chat. The room, while small, was clean and tidy. Having the breakfast stored in a cupboard, with different. We actually had breakfast at the Country Lounge on the other side of the river. If you take into consideration that the place was built in the 1730's, it was actually a very nice place. We didn't try the restaurant, but I understand it is highly regarded.

This is a small family run hotel and resturant. The owner is the chef, and the food is excellent. He has an extensive wine list, so if you are a connoisseur of wine- then this is the place for you! The resturant is amazing, beautifully lit with candles.

So I stayed at this property on Friday 11th April 2025. One single room ,it's very small , yes tea and coffee, kettle,small fridge ,small tv. Wardrobe with hangers, also a shower and toilet .the fridge had breakfast stuff in , two slices of bread (toaster also)drink of Orange , cereal,milk . So yes everything in the room but it's very small , the wallpaper needs attention it's bits missing especially next to the single bed (the bed is pushed up against the wall so it's like you are sandwiched in at the top , one wall is just board nothing on it like ,just not touched at all , the shower wouldn't tighten so you had to hold it in your hand to shower , I didn't see anyone in the small bar at any time , it is what it is ,ok if you are a student or something. It did the job but I wouldn't go back , the hotel manager who gave me the room key was Very welcoming, the room needs a makeover

A one night stay in central Stamford worked well. Very old building and very quirky. I called to see where i could park and the owner came out and showed me a space in his car parking area. Breakfast was in a fridge in the room with fresh milk , cereals, tea coffee etc which was fine.

We had to negotiate narrow stairs to the 2nd floor which at the age of 76 with luggage was not easy.

We didnt bother because the room was cold and eating b/fast sitting on your bed was not on my agenda, consequently the Candlesticks is located not far from Stamford town centre which has plenty of cafes etc.
The host however is a very pleasant chap.

I was particularly disappointed with the bed, the mattress was so springy and the pillow was hard. Safe to say, sleep didn't come. The bathroom is extremely dated and the hot water took an age to come through. While the staff were friendly and accommodating, they couldn't compensate for the overall condition of the property. I would not recommend this hotel in its current state.\"
