The hotel staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The hotel itself was stunning, both inside and out, with beautiful surroundings and elegant interiors.

The spa was absolutely amazing and the highlight of our stay. I would highly recommend booking the spa in advance to avoid missing out, as it’s clearly very popular.

We had a wonderful time and would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable stay.

Breakfast awful - for such a high room rate, queuing with the previous days wedding party for a very average offer wasn’t a nice start to your day. Seriously, the sausages and Bacon were Premier Inn at best! Also, the world of breakfast has moved on and you need to change not stay locked in the 90s.

A lovely hotel with a friendly team of staff. Access to the spa was a great bonus. The food was really good and welcome drink a nice surprise. We ate in the restaurant both nights. The Courtyard was a lovely space to take your drink. Good location. I would recommend a stay at this hotel.

Poor service from management. Food average but ££

My partner (wearing socks)stepped on a staple sticking up in the room carpet causing a puncture wound to his foot. The staple was given to reception staff - they expressed concern and said the Manager would want to speak to us - but he was busy and would catch us later. We were around during the evening and at breakfast but no-one sought us out. After paying the bill we completed an accident form and were asked to wait and talk to a Manager. We waited 10 mins but, again, they were busy so we said we'd see them later in the day when we returned to collect our car. We again waited 10 minutes but still no-one came to see us so we left for home feeling totally ignored.
Accidents happen but how they are dealt with make a difference to a customers experience. We did not feel valued.

Restaurant food is average and overpriced. £5 for side dish of Jersey Royal potatoes - they came sliced and fried. I think they had been cooked the day before.

The bedside reading lights do not work unless the main light is on!!!

The room was clean and comfortable but had a noise problem from people upstairs - sounded like two elephants walking around at 6.30 in morning.

Courtyard is a nice place to sit and have drink. Breakfast was nice.

Overall a nice stay at the property. The two highlights for us were the beautiful Spa, lovely facilities & really beautiful setting! And the staff - excellent customer service - very friendly & attentive!

Overall the rooms are okay, the decor as other reviews suggest is a little on the older side but didn't fuss us, the rooms were clean. Unfortunately being a slightly older property, the walls are quite thin and our room in particular (room 2) we heard people all hours of the night & day, which also made our bed shake as it was right against the wall that is situated alongside the corridor & staircase to other rooms.

The other minor fix, being summer, windows & patio doors open etc, lots of flies within the property and in the breakfast room, some items (cold cuts, fruit & bread) left uncovered. Flies landing on these items so we avoided - easily fixed.

Overall, the property is beautifully located & the friendly staff & lovely spa are the highlights.

The grounds are nice and the area wonderful.

The rooms are on the small side and so are the bathrooms but the bed was very comfortable and had some nice touches. Tea and coffee and biscuits.

Fabulous and friendly

Very friendly staff made this a thoroughly lovely experience. From the glass fo wine handed to you on arrival, you are left with the impression that the staff simply can't do enough for you. Excellent food in the restaurant (supper and breakfast) with prompt service thoughout. Even thought this was only a business stay, I would highly recommend this hotel to people visiting the area.

Hotel without views of Rutland Water

It’s a nice enough hotel, quite old fashioned, but spa area is lovely - outdoor pool small but warm enough on October. Sauna & hot tub were wonderful. Just a real shame that the hotel didn’t have views of Rutland Water - it really could be in any field anywhere in the UK.

The slightly negative review revolves around the bathroom in our room. It was clearly designed to be wheelchair accessible, which I applaud (even though I am not a wheelchair user), however, as a result the bathroom was very sparse and basic, comparable in fact to a hospital bathroom (and arguably worse). There was not even a toilet lid, everything was made of plastic, and worst of all there was a very bad smell emanating from the shower drain which made its way into the bedroom.
The spa was amazing, however.

We stayed here for 3 days and had a really nice time. The property is very well maintained and clean. Our room was very nice. The bed was a bit small and the floorboards were a bit creaky. The walls are very thin and consequently “in room noises “ from other rooms were easily heard. The location is very rural and not close to much. The restaurant was decent but the service was poor. Don’t get the mussels!

The dinner menu is a bit pricey and there was a mix up in meals. My friend ended up with chicken instead of the sea bass ….hence one star off for service… our dinner drinks were ages in coming too.

Overall room was average in what i have stayed in . On viewing the bathroom area , the cleaning was disappointing as the toilet still had not been cleaned from the last guest . Hairs on the seat and other persons toilet still in the basin . When seating on the toilet it was to close to wall and the toilet holder was right by you on the right hand side.Poor lighting in bathroom.
On a plus side food was very good , breakfast and dinner A1.

Room appearance wasn't great. Valen e tucked up exposing a stained bed base.
No milk in the room and the bottle of conditioner in the bathroom was empty.

Stayed for 3 nights and it was a brilliant stay. Big bed and comfortable. Clean and the best part was the garden where I can walk my dog every morning. Down part was the WiFi it wasn’t connected and a bit expensive we paid 255 for 3 nights and the breakfast wasn’t included.

We had a beautiful room, with a huge bed, 2 armchairs, and even a bottle of port!
The food was delicious and we were sat in a lovely dog friendly section of the Orangey
Outside the extensive grassed area led down to the field of very friendly Highland Cows

Welcoming environment with comfortable accommodation. A little more attention to detail might elevate this hotel to 5 stars- for instance provision of a full length mirror in bedrooms or shower caps in bathrooms (as the shower in our room was not adjustable). Breakfast was a bit disappointing- poor coffee, toaster not working to deliver decent toast, strange scrambled egg. Having said all that we like the warm feel of this bijoux destination and will consider returning in the hope that they make a step forwards.

A bit disappointing

My husband and I booked a one night stay. We go walking and stay over at Rutland Water quite often and thought we would stay somewhere different for a change.
We were disappointed.
We had a friendly greeting on arrival and a glass of complimentary wine which was a nice surprise.
However, our room was small and looked quite tired, with mould in the bathroom. There was a lot of footfall outside our room and every time someone walked past, our room including the bed shook.
We dined in the restaurant and while the food was good, we felt it was overpriced for what it was and the service was a bit haphazard.
Not sure we will be returning here as there is so much other choice of accommodation in the area. Sorry.

Lovely hotel in nice grounds, we had booked the Heritage room option but it was a lot smaller than we expected, I think it was a standard room! if it was a Heritage room then the standard rooms must be very small. It needed updating as there were a few bad scuffs on the walls, the bath plug system didn't work. The restaurant and bar area were very nice and relaxing, the outside courtyard was a great space to unwind. We ate in the restaurant the food was OK. The staff were lovely and friendly, on balance a nice stay.

We had a two night stay and enjoyed it. The staff were fantastic, especially Ben who runs the bar and restaurant. He has a good wine cellar and is is knowledgeable about the wine in it. He made us feel very welcome and kindly bought us a drink for our wedding anniversary. The food on menu is well prepared but I struggled a bit with my selection, especially the starter - this is just personal choice. Having said that the nibbles section makes a decent starter substitute. When checking in, we thought we had the wrong room but actually it was just that the picture was very flattering. This would be my only criticism.
Having said that they gave us a free upgrade and that was a nice touch. Obviously this may not always be possible. Would recommend and would use again, if in the area. Walking distance for able bodied people to Rutland Water

Public area was good, but bedrooms and gardens need seem unfinished, need a lot of work. Quality is in the detail, ie unimaginative and basic tea and coffee trays, lack of daffodils or tulips - its springtime. The grass field outside my window was bare and boring. The bird name on my room was spelled incorrectly. The one next door was Robin - cant go wrong with that!

Room's are not as described. The pictures on the website are from a hotel in London!

They are smaller and not decorated with any real design. Clean and tidy however.

They are overpriced in comparison to other hotels in the area.

New owners are undermining the customer experience and staff. I was offered an upgrade by the deputy manager after complaining about the room size and level of comfort. The new manager then however refused to honer this and tried to charge me extra. Not impressed. The deputy manager had done absolutely the correct thing.

Food excellent although for those with dietary requirements it is made difficult as no details provided on menus. I had to ask what was available at every meal. Limited range of food therefore which was simply adjusted to fit my diet.

New owners need to listen to the established staff otherwise customers will go elsewhere.

Overnight stay at Barnsdale Lodge.

The hotel is excellent although the restaurant was overpriced in the evening. We had a Turkey dinner, but it was really dissapointing as there was very little veg or gravy on the dinner, but the food was nicely cooked.
The included breakfast was excellent though, and the ladies who served it were amazing with us and our dog.
The hotel is well worth staying at as it is in a fabulous setting and the public areas of the hotel are lovely. The evening menu needs improvement thought.

We stayed for one night, the hotel was lovely and the staff mostly happy and helpful. We had a non working shower in a room which they knew about and neglected to tell us. We also couldn’t get a table for dinner in the restaurant as it was full which I found remarkable as the restaurant is for hotel guests. The grounds and the hotel seemed lovely and welcoming. I would stay again but would book in advance at the restaurant and check things worked on arrival.
