We stayed in Room # 10, so our complaints are specific to that room. The room was small (not unusual for Italy, but they had put two twin beds together creating a large queen. The bed took up most of the space in the room. Little room to maneuver around the bed. Everything became tripping obstacles because there was so little space for anything else. Limited shelves, or table top space. The bathroom was dangerously crammed. In order to sit on the toilet, you had to stand, tuen and sit with your feet in the shower pan (which was slippery). The raised edges of the shower pan were a tripping hazard, the shower was tiny and dangerous.
Outside of the room, there were tripping hazards in several common areas.
This was not an inexpensive hotel and we elected to leave after two nights, losing our third night.
The breakfast service was adequate at best.

The room was very small and basic. Important for people to know that this hotel is not located where views of the Lake are possible. There is no elevator and all rooms are above the reception level. This is a somewhat spartan, but clean and safe, small hotel. There is no view of the lake, but it is an easy walk to the lakefront. The property would have been improved by more ambient lighting, a better lock system for doors, tissues in the room, and another piece of furniture in the bathroom to lay toiletries and items on

This hotel needs renovation and decorating. Lake Como is an expensive place to stay and this is at the cheaper end. Even so, the room was poorly laid out, the shower barely adequate with a torn curtain and the plumbing mean that the tap dripped all the time and the toilet gurgled as it was not filling up properly. Add to that, bread and biscuits that were out of date and mouldy as well as air conditioning that only works when it is 25c (so guests are allowed to be v uncomfortable at 24.5c) & you get an idea why I was v unimpressed. Even the pictures were crooked and don't get me started on the TV which was not fit for purpose. Outside of the hotel, Lake Como looks v scenic and is a lovely holiday destination

This hotel has a great location. You can walk to the ferry in two minutes and the train station in five. The staff was very friendly, especially reception desk, where Mateo and Julia were very helpful to us and answering our questions and coordinating things. Convenient and clean place to stay in the area is beautiful.

We had a very pleasant stay overall. The hotel was welcoming and dog-friendly, which we really appreciated. The breakfast was good and the concierge was kind and helpful throughout our visit. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly — a great place to unwind.
Unfortunately, due to a mix-up on our part, we left behind a pair of pants. While we understand this was our mistake, it was disappointing that no one contacted us or made an effort to return them, especially since they were likely found.
Despite this, we enjoyed our stay and would consider coming back — just with a firmer grip on our luggage next time!

We arrived after 8pm (train wasn’t running, so we had to take multiple buses) & front desk was closed. We called & they had upgraded us to a sister location as our room’s lock had broken; it was ~1 block away. We had a difficult time finding the entrance, but once we did, it was easy. Nice & spacious, great AC, our daughter’s bed ready to go! We were able to do the check in via what’s ap & left the city tax in the room so we didn’t even need to go back to the main hotel. Easy walk to restaurants (one even below our room) & lakeside! Would recommend!

The staff, receptionist and front desk were all very satisfactory, as well as the location. The hotel itself, however, was terrible. Among the many problems, it was mainly the humid air and horrid odor that stood out to me. The bathroom itself was not only extremely outdated, but was designed without the user in mind. It was an extremely tight and cramped space, as I was even unable to sit straight on the toilet. There were bed bugs in all of our rooms. We were a group of 7 and all had bites across 4 rooms. The sheets smelled of bleach.

Overall the hotel is a good choice. It’s very well located and has reasonable prices for the area. Breakfast was only just passable. I had a single room which was quite well set up. The mattress, however, urgently needs replacing as it has a large hollow at hip level from overuse. The bathroom was small but functional. Be aware, though, that the shower is very small and if you are larger than average you probably won’t have a particularly enjoyable shower.

The property needs updating and the room wasn’t that functional-safe was locked and I useable, bathroom was big but with virtually no storage area for toiletries and with a yrinal and toilet?, only an armoire to hang clothes and room was noisy with main road foot and street traffic.

10 minute walk to the station. 5 minute walk to the ferry. Location is amazing, it was clean and smelled great. Check in was a breeze very friendly. I had to catch an early train and couldn’t have the breakfast buffet but they made me a to go bag the night before to take with me! Highly recommend this place!

Stay elsewhere! No AC, no fan, no elevator. Staff unwilling to help with broken ac. We could sleep as it was 98 degrees F in our room. We carried 2 large suitcases up 3 flights of stairs to a room with no ac or fan. After 1 sleepless night we decided to check out in the morning. Staff was nothing but argumentative about everything. No refund, no apology, no attempt to help with the matter. We checked into a neighboring hotel and had a lovely rest of our stay.

The Montecodeno is a short walk from the train station and Lake Como. The lobby is at the street level but you have to go outside and up a flight of stairs to access your room. We didn’t mind the walk but it may be difficult if you have mobility issues.

A very nice breakfast is included with lots to choose from. They ask you if you would like a hot beverage coffee, tea, etc and then bring it to your table. There’s a small patio off the dining area where you can enjoy breakfast or an afternoon refreshment. They have a large refrigerator stocked with drinks and snacks available 24/7. You simply let them know what you consumed when you check out.
This was our first stay in Varenna and we would definitely stay at the Montecodena again. Great value too.

A very nice breakfast is included with lots to choose from. They ask you if you would like a hot beverage coffee, tea, etc and then bring it to your table. There’s a small patio off the dining area where you can enjoy breakfast or an afternoon refreshment. They have a large refrigerator stocked with drinks and snacks available 24/7. You simply let them know what you consumed when you check out.
This was our first stay in Varenna and we would definitely stay at the Montecodena again. Great value too.

This hotel was great! Some reviews complained of small rooms and although the room was not spacious, it was certainly adequate and the bed was excellent. The bathroom was fully stocked with amenities and there was very hot water to shower. Breakfast was huge and offered a wide selection to suit most international travelers. The hotel was also very quiet, I've stayed closer to the square in Varenna and it is very loud (church bells, parties, street noise), none of that here but it is only a quick walk to all the action.

The hitel is very close from the train station (5 min) and to the ferry (2 min). The breakfast was very nice as well. However, we stayed in room 10 and although we had the ac set to the lowest setting, it still dint get cooler than about 77-78 degrees. This may most likely be typical for europe. Also, the bathroom was extremely cramped. You have to basically stand in the shower in order to use the toilet and the shower was so small that you could hardly turn around. Additionally, the floor was slippery, i slipped iin the first 30 min we were there just coming out of the bathroom into the room. The staff was very nice and helpful. Just an older building with few updates.

Hotel gave clear instructions to get there from the train station. The walk from station is scenic . Just be prepared to walk in an incline and walk up stairs to get to the accomodation. Pack lightly if possible. Hotel is walking distance to the ferry and to the main area where the food is.

From the start this hotel was a disappointment. The decor is sad, and it feels like an old fashioned hospital. The bathroom was not practical at all. It almost dampened our stay in Varenna. I truly just want to erase it from my memory. Please search carefully. There’s not even a view. The WiFi barely works. Safe didn’t work. Toilet paper was a joke. The floors seemed to have been cleaned with dirty mop water and bleach. Run!

Disappointed! Very simple room and dingy. No window. Needed painting. No chair in room even though a small desk. Rollaway was tiny falling apart I paid triple what it was worth and found same room now for 1/3 the price i paid 3 months ago when i dooked the room. Staff is superb, the location is perfect but this property needs a LOT of work. Not sure why it’s listed as a 3 star, this a 2 star property at the most. Ants everywhere, AC that only works when temp is over 100°C making it unbearable to sleep, windows that don’t work properly, doors don’t have regular locks (you need the key to open the main door) making it a safety issue, clogged drains, flickering lights in the bathroom, etc…

Overall very good stay. Rooms are a little on the small side but I feel that is to be expected in this area. Bed was comfortable and the room was clean. It was a little loud at night, the hotel is right next to the road and I could hear our neighbors talking. We slept with a noise machine so it wasn’t too bothersome. The breakfast was good, had all of the basics. Very walkable to everything in Varenna. We would stay here again!

I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Montecodeno, while the room are basic, they were clean and the beds were comfortable. The location is good, very close to the ferry port and train station. The buffet breakfast exceeded my expectations for such a small hotel. Matteo and the lady (who I didn't get the name of) at front desk were both really friendly and helpful, such as getting us an umbrella when it was raining without asking and giving us directions.

The address provided is not the lobby address of the hotel but it is the address of the back entrance to get into the room. No refrigerator in the room to keep in the room but they allow us to store my insulin in the near location. The hotel room that we get is not wheelchair accessible, it has steps.
