Rising at the highest point in Cortona, the Monastery occupies a place steeped in history. Known since Roman times for its abundant waters-a large cistern called the “Bath of Bacchus” once stood here-this place has been a sanctuary for centuries.

The original structure dates back to the 1400s, and over the centuries, the Monastery has been the refuge first for the confraternity of St. Roch, then the Dominican Monks, the Servants of Mary and finally the Cistercian Monks.

An immense hall, the former refectory of the monks, marks the beginning of a timeless journey. Monastero di Cortona today is not just a luxury hotel, but a sensory experience that captures the soul.

Its 36 rooms and suites, once the ancient cells of monks and priors, tell stories of a distant past. The spa, "Bagni di Bacco, " carved out of the ancient Roman cistern from which it takes its name, invites you to immerse yourself in a ritual of wellness and rebirth.

But the real magic lies in its restaurants. Gli Affreschi, whose name comes from the discovery of centuries-old frescoes, some of which experts say seem to refer to the Battle of Montaperti in 1260, is a sanctuary of taste where chef Ricci celebrates Tuscan cuisine with flair and sophistication.

L'Osteria del Santo, on the other hand, is a cozy haven where the flavors of Tuscan tradition are revealed in all their authenticity. The wine cellar, a journey through the excellence of Tuscany and beyond, with more than 300 labels.

Enriching the experience is a panoramic terrace, carved out of the remains of the monks' ancient botanical garden, overlooking the Val di Chiana and now enriched by a plunge pool and solarium area, an oasis of peace and tranquility where time seems to stand still. Our arrival experience was less than stellar for a warm welcome to property. Front desk associate was very cold and accusatory of the situation we encountered outside of the property. We have traveled extensively and I expected better arrival experience. It all changed for the better when we finally got to our amazing suite and befriending two amazing individuals in the hotel bar.
The roof top suite was absolutely amazing! The room is quiet, private and much larger than described on the site. We absolutely loved the room and the privacy. The rooftop suite is the best in the house!

Claudio in the bar and Salvatore the sommelier are stellar to guests, they turned around the entire experience! I let them know what had happened upon arrival and they immediately got the GM to reach out to us. Lara, the GM is amazing and quickly made our experience turn into something so special, as we wanted! She is an incredible woman and turned our stay into an incredible experience!
The breakfast is nothing less than wonderful and the service in their restaurants are so attentive and the food was delicious. Hands down, I would love to go back again. They certainly made things right by making our romantic stay, exactly what I wanted. They made us feel heard and valued and welcomed at this once in a lifetime experience.
We made friends that we will cherish and memories that we will never forget!
Claudio, Lara and Salvatore really made our stay exactly what we needed and wanted!

fabulous hotel with the most beautiful aperol spritz I have ever had served by the pool, and that was only one of the wonderful things I have to say about this beautiful hotel. The staff were helpful and accomodating, breakfast in the courtyard outstanding and our room was divine. Cant recommend this property enough.

The hotel is very nice. Our room was quite small and the window view was lovely but very high up on top of the wall to where you can’t see out unless you go up steps to your tippy toes.

Breakfast was very good. Dinners were good but pricey. Would have been nice to sit outside but it was colder and no outdoor heaters.

My main issue was the parking. We thought we could park at the hotel but they said the parking was full so we parked down a hill and had to pay. The hotel was aware but didn’t offer service to help.

Our second time at the Monastero di Cortona and came back because we enjoyed it so much. Staff are wonderful - so attentive and helpful. Food at the main restaurant was fantastic as were the breakfasts.

Cortona is a must.

We had a wonderful four day stay while wandering our way through Italy. The location is at the top of the hill and I mean the TOP. View is great but be prepared to climb the hill which is quite steep. The roads are narrow so if you are driving the smaller car is preferred.

This place was simple extraordinary .
Starting each day with a breakfast that had every imaginable food options to suit your style. No lunch needed after feasting in style.
Happy hour could not have been better, the cocktails were a work of art, as were the complimentary appetizers!
Each day we thought we would try some other restaurant in Cortona, but ultimately always chose to eat in the dinning room, and we were never disappointed.
The wine, food, service, ...all outstanding.
Oh my, the rooms, sheer indulgence, the views, the linens, the daily treats left for our enjoyment, the accessories, space & lighting options in the powder room.
The ambiance of this hotel, combined with the staff, made our stay memorable indeed.
I hope to be lucky enough to return!

Fantastic hotel, perfect for a relaxing getaway. The staff are really polite and very attentive. The hotel is spotless and your room is cleaned numerous times a day.
The hotel is wonderfully located above the village with a pleasant walk down into the town centre. I would recommend a room with a patio so that you can enjoy the spacious bedroom when you don’t want to be at the pool.

It’s impossible to praise this hotel enough! What an amazing experience, from the care and concern after booking, to check-in and the attention to detail throughout our stay. The location is good, not too far to walk to local restaurants in Cortona but far enough to be tranquil. The hotel is spotless and well appointed. However what makes it an experience not to be forgotten is the staff. Everyone, from reception to housekeeping to restaurant to bar are amazing. Fantastic !!

Arriving was challenging. Hotel sent a little video, which helped. It’s very steep and narrow… people prone to carsickness should definitely take Dramamine or something.

The hotel itself is pretty. The A/C was ok, not great. The elevator buttons are touch screen and didn’t always work. Also there was no hand sanitizer at the elevators.

The outdoor pool and garden were great.

Many great restaurants were walking distance from the hotel. Wear comfortable shoes.

Housekeeping did a great job keeping everything clean.

What an absolutely amazing experience!! This was a highlight of our first trip to Italy. It started a bit rocky as it’s a challenge to find the hotel via car. However, with a simple phone call they sent a driver to retrieve us and our luggage from a nearby public parking lot. We were greeted with refreshing drinks while they checked us in. Our rooms were perfectly spacious. We enjoyed our first day in the spa. This was so special to spend time with my mother and daughter in this serene setting. We then headed out to the pool area where we relaxed in the comfortable lounging chairs. We also ordered some lovely drinks and appetizers. There breakfasts were exceptional and the overall experience was fantastic!! Highly recommend!

It was a very nice stay in the center of Cortona village. Beautiful hotel and views. Comfortable and very clean rooms. The parking is the only thing that you need to prepare for, they have a small garage but you have to reserve and pay in advance. The other option is to park the car in other places close to the village and walk to the hotel.

What a beautiful place. Staff was amazing, so helpful in every way. Lovely breakfasts in the garden. Their bartender fixes some incredible cocktails and the one night we had dinner in the hotel restaurant, everything was delicious.
A word of advice: If you’re driving, insist on a SMALL rental car. Cortona is full of tiny curvy cobblestone streets some of which you must drive through to get to and from the hotel. We were offered an upgrade to a Jeep with the turning radius of a semi truck and like the dumb Americans we are, we accepted. We cursed that Jeep every day spent in Cortona.

I'd rate it as one of the best for breakfast that I have experienced. We spent a week at the hotel and would have been quite happy to have stayed longer. The most amazing stay! Literally the best hotel in Cortona. Such a short walk to the city center. My boyfriend and I had the most incredible time, our only regret was that our stay was so short. Don’t know where to start…we have just returned from the most amazing 5 day break at the Monastero. From the second we walked in until moment we left we were met with most friendly, genuine, attentive staff at all levels. The building is beautiful, the rooms comfortable with huge beds and everything you need, clean towels daily and a turn down service with chocolate is a nice touch. Breakfast included is also excellent, again everything you need and a la carte items if you wish and served on the terrace too if you like to make it extra special. Bar fully stocked with everything you could think of and a hugely knowledgeable Bar Manager who will make you anything and his friendliness is another highlight of our stay. Cortona centre is 2 minutes away down a lovely street, every step a head turning moment with either the amazing view or the lanes, piazzas, decor and buildings. All in all we had the most amazing time in an amazing place, 5 stars is an understatement as it deserves more! There’s so much more I could say but if you visit Italy never mind Tuscany you must come and stay here.

Monastero di Cortona Hotel & Spa is the perfect oasis while exploring Cortona. The hotel is within walking distance to most of the Cortona sights and experiences. All the staff are extremely friendly, helpful and professional (not at all snooty). The hotel is very clean with twice daily room checks to replace linens, empty trash bins, and refill toiletries. The breakfasts offered were well beyond the typical hotel breakfasts - well-presented, fresh, and delicious. The meals we had at the restaurant were beautiful and delectable (some of the best food we have ever had). The pool provided a great reprieve from the heat and the setting is gorgeous. While our room was small (the only option available since we booked late), the space is well laid out and very functional. The king bed and linens were heavenly. We were surprised at how quiet the room was (no banging doors from other quests or any noise at all). The only bad parts are difficulties getting there and having to leave.

The hotel is so beautiful!!! It's recently been totally renovated with seemly no expense spared. Decorated with soft tones of grey and white the decor sets off the vaulted barrel cealings throughout~ including the rooms! An Awesome Place to Stay!!!

This hotel and staff is absolutely amazing. We stayed 14 nights and had a fabulous time in Cortona. Giuseppe the manager as well as Carolina, Claudia, Suzanne, and Raimondo are first class in their service at the front desk. Bruno, and Luigi took care of us in the breakfast and bar area. Sorina and Roberta were also wonderful in the spa area. I see now why they have awesome reviews on trip advisor. I did not mention everyone by name but literally every staff person goes out of their way to serve their guests. The detail throughout the establishment is first class. I can say the establishment is awesome but I can't say enough about all the staff.

What a romantic hotel! We came here for our honeymoon, and it was just about the most restful, romantic location we could imagine. The location is amazing in beautiful Cortona, steps away from the town square. The courtyard was stunning, and each breakfast amazing. Customer service was top notch, very professional and helpful. The spa is so lovely, we took advantage of the massage and soaking pool. All in all I highly recommend!

Location location location. Enjoyed the room but we had some problems with water leak in the bathroom which we no doubt will be attended to :)

Breakfast was included but being charged 5 euro for fresh eggs is a little rich. Never come across this in all our travels. The scrambled eggs on the buffet didn't look great.

We figure it's an elite hotel and to charge just took the shine off a little

Amazing place in Cortona. Rooms are on the small-ish size (compared to our hotel in Florence) but that's understandable given that it's a renovated monastery. Staff is helpful.

Word of warning: rent a small car. It gets really hairy given Cortona's narrow and steep streets which make for tight turns.
