Summer trip July 2025

Had a great stay at Hotel Italia. On arrival, flight was delayed and train from Rome delayed but lovely lady on the front desk offered to stay until nearly 9pm so she could check me in which was hugely appreciated after such a busy day travelling!
The room is big and airy, very tidy with a comfortable bed.
Location is perfect being only a 30 second walk from the main Piazza.
Already looking to book our next trip to Cortona and will be staying here again!

I can’t say enough good things about this place. We’ve been raving about it since we left, and will recommend to anyone going to Tuscany (Cortona as a whole, but ESPECIALLY Hotel Italia). We were a pair of 21-year-old girls travelling alone, and the staff made us feel safe, at-home, and empowered to ask questions and get acquainted with the area. The comfy bed, working outlets, and bathroom amenities were a refreshing change coming from Rome. We were in a basic room but still enjoyed our view of the surrounding buildings. The breakfast was lovely, and the view was unmatched. Franz was a fantastic Hotelier, and allowed us to leave our belongings for a while so we could continue to explore after check-out. Overall, this was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait to come back to Hotel Italia again with family or more friends!

Check in was easy. Staff very helpful. Room was large and very clean. Bed was very comfortable. Elevator was very helpful especially for getting to breakfast on the 4th floor. Breakfast room had glass all around providing a great view of the valley. Food was substantial. Even had pancakes. Adding eggs would be nice for visitors. Person working the breakfast room was very nice and made us fresh coffee and cappuccino each morning. Highly recommend this hotel. It is very close to the center of Cortona, easy walking to the many wonderful Cortona restaurants, stores and wine shop. The lobby was beautifully decorated for the holidays.

The reception of the hotel was lovely, i run the bell and a kind lady promptly help me check in.
The hotel was really good for the price, it was not a fancy hotel but it was clean and the room and the bathroom were a good size for one person, and with enough space to hang clothing. The top floor where breakfast is served has an amazing view.
The hotel is just steps away from Piazza della Repubblica and close to all restaurants and shops.
I highly recommend this hotel.

We had to change our plans due to the strike of public transportation on the day we were supposed to travel and needed to stay an extra night in Cortona. We were fortunate to find this hotel on short notice and the staff was very accommodating. We were allowed to check into the room in the morning. Breakfast the next day was delicious. Friendly staff! Definitely recommend this hotel!

The hotel is in a small side street which makes it nice and quiet. The hotel itself is utilitarian in that is clean, quiet and basic. Location is GREAT for both the metro (5 minutes walk), main train station (2 metro stops away), Trevi fountain (5minute walk) with lots of dining options. It’s not fancy, but location was great. There is also a grocery store at the bottom of the road which is well stocked for food and snacks.
The afternoon shift male receptionist was super rude and unhelpful… unnecessarily so.. but other staff members were pleasant and helpful. No breakfast options, but again walk down the hill and there are a couple of decent boutique hotels that allow outside guests to dine there!

This is the first time I've stayed at this particular property in Cortona. It is only staffed from 8am until 8pm, so when the fire alarm went off at 5am they were unreachable for over 2 hours while the alarm went off continuously. Luckily a false alarm, hate to see what would have happened in a real emergency. The emergency numbers provided were not working. We went to the police department, they did not come. We called 112 and they sent the fire department after 1 hour wait.

We know alarms happen, however, the response was not satisfactory.

The hotel charges the same price as a fully staffed hotel, I would not recommend it over other hotels I've used nearby.

It's unfortunate.

Also, no fridge or water in the rooms. I would classify it as more.of a hostel for the local college that utilizes the hotel frequently.


I don't like to give negative reviews because all agencies can have a one off. Hope they improve their policies and also staffing a full hotel 24/7 would be appropriate.

One night in Cortona

My family and I were able to spend one night at the lovely Hotel Italia. The hotel is reminiscent of \"old\" Italy. The decor was lovely and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The front desk woman made a dinner reservation for us and also arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the train station. She went over and above. The hotel rates are very reasonable and the breakfast that was included was excellent! I would definitely recommend.

Properly became a hostel without informing me, at night the entrance had drunk men making it uncomfortable. Noisy hallways and banging doors. Breakfast is no longer included but websites continue to say it is. I would not recommend this to anyone over 24

Hotel Italia is situated in the heart of old town Cortona, just off the Piazza della Repubblica.
Franz greeted us with a huge smile and plenty of useful information. The lobby area was clean and charming.
Our room was clean and comfortable for the most part. Adjusting the temperature is always a challenge in older buildings when there are big swings in outside temperatures.
The only negative aspect of our stay was the WiFi was very unstable and weak. Cell service behind the thick medieval walls is pretty much non-existent so this was inconvenient.
The views at breakfast from the top piano are amazing. The caffe was wonderful and the food was good enough.
The hotel in November was a good value and I would consider a short stay here again.

The Hotel Italia was lovely! It is just off the main square in Cortona, so the location is fantastic. But it is also very quiet. The air conditioning worked great as well. Diego, at the front desk, was continually helpful and so polite. Breakfast was great and the cappucini were delicious. I great value!! Would stay here again.

The room,staff, breakfast, and location is amazing. The views are breathtaking. Loved the complimentary Cappuccino. They called a Taxi to pick me up at the train station. I was in Cortona for a wedding and the staff went above and beyond to make my stay excellent! The wedding was at a villa located in the hills of Tuscany but they found the best taxi driver to help me find this neighborhood. He even came back to pick me up in the middle of the night! Keep in mind that they do not have any street lights? The breakfast was incredible with the most amazing view of the lake. Also, I needed a couple extra hours for a late checkout and they were very understanding. They told me to take my time and it was not a hassle at all. Hotel Italia is a GREAT PLACE TO STAY!!!

Not to Be Missed!

This little gem in the heart of Cortona is a must stay. The staff were so helpful that, eventhough our plans kept changing, they never missed an opportunity to say yes to us. The room was clean, comfortable and sported 2 bathrooms! The breakfast buffet was delicious and served in a rooftop room with amazing views of the valley below. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Cortona!

One of the most unique hotels with the friendliest of staffs. Our only regret is that we were unable to stay longer. Even though it was a VERY quaint, old building, we were nice and warm, which we have not been in most of the hotels in Italy this spring!

Old rustic tranquillity

Great location once you don't drive into Cortona by car . Park outside the castle walls and you will avoided fine. Hotel staff were one of the friendliest we encountered in all our time travelling. We were on holidays from working with \"The general public\" so sorry we didn't interact with them too much. Breakfast was free but lots to choose from. There is a coffee machine but ask the lady and she will bring you fresh coffee on request . Room 30 was big and very comfortable. Shower / toilet room was large and bright. View from breakfast room amazing . It was thunder and lightning one morning and it added to the views . Diego and Ramana met us at reception the first day and till we left they were on hand to answer any questions or issues . We will be back .

Perfectly Located

It was a fantastic little hotel, right in the center of gorgeous little Cortona. Such a great beautiful place, I'd like to go back - this time I know to park OUTSIDE the city walls. The alleys are so small it's a harrowing experience even to get a pillbox of a car (Citron mini) through them and Im an experienced city driver (SF-DC.)

Great hotel though - great suggestions for the restaurants in town, I'm definitely going back and bringing my fiance.

There are no services like washing clothes or any tours available. The breakfast, even though was the same every day, was of a high quality, fresh cut fruit salad, quality meats and cheeses and you could make toast. Breakfast tables were cleared immediately for new guests. We had to ask for replacement toilet rolls twice in our 6 night stay.

The only thing that was not great was that the room service options said they were available until 10pm, but when I tried calling, the call would not go through. When I went down to the main desk to inquire at 9pm, no one was available to ask for water or snacks.

The location is in the heart of Cortona and the staff Ramona and Kiara were just wonderful and helpful with all information and requests. They even sent a bottle of wine for my sisters birthday !! Not good expected better. I asked to be upgraded since the rate dropped since we booked. They said they would for the same price. Was given same room I booked not upgrade. The bed was very uncomfortable, there were bugs in bathroom. No clean towels until the third day. On the third day when they knew we weren't happy they offered us upgrade for our last night but at a higher price. We didn't take there offer. Very historical town and Cortona is beautiful. Enjoyed our visit but not hotel

A beautiful stay in Tuscany

This is a lovely small hotel right in the center of Cortona, one of the most charming and beautiful hill towns in Tuscany (Frances Mayes lives here and immortalized it in \"Under the Tuscan Sun\"). I stayed in a double room one time, without a view, but this time I stayed in a very small single room with a spectacular view out over the valley. The room was indeed very small, but the view.....well, I will request this room when alone for any subsequent trips! The staff is wonderful - friendly and helpful. There is no minibar but the staff will deliver to your room what ever you might normally want from a minibar. The hotel is very affordable and the experience really lovely.

The stuff of dreams

We were warmly welcomed to the hotel and we went to our room to find an apartment of two bedrooms, a bath and an entryway. The room was clean, a good air conditioner for a hot night and great references for places to visit and restaurants. On checking in we were told that breakfast would be on the top floor with a view of the area but we were not prepared for the breathtaking views which we enjoyed while eating a wonderful breakfast. The view was enough to make the entire stay worthwhile even if the rest had not been as great. We loved Cotona and Hotel Italia.

Location and friendliness all around!

Hotel Italia was such a pleasure! My trip to Cortona was just an overnight one (sadly so). It was very last minute and Hotel Italia popped up as a very centrally located, highly admired, affordable, boutique style hotel. I reserved a simple, one-person room, but upon check in, they offered me a very generous upgrade to a larger room in a higher floor with a stunning view of the valley below. I am sure some rooms have more of a view than others, as I am sure that some rooms are more spacious than others, but I can tell you that the staff was cordial, friendly and always smiling. They kept me at ease and at home. The included breakfast upstairs in the last floor terrace was a wonderful bonus too! I highly recommend Hotel Italia for your stay in Cortona, and can't wait to go back myself! Thank you!

We were given very clear instructions on finding the hotel and parking. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and well appointed, the location is a few steps from the centre of Cortona but quiet and there is a good choice at breakfast. rooms are very small.

I stayed here two years ago. This time I was disappointed with my room. My closet at home is larger than the room I was in. On the basis of the room I'd have to give the hotel a 3 star at the most. The staff were very friendly and always willing to help. Because of the movie about the town there are a lot of Americans.

Great hotel in Cortona

Hotel Italia was a great choice for us. It is within the walled city of Cortona and just a few steps from the 2 town squares in town. I would stay here again. One small disappointment was that we planned to do laundry here as it was at the midpoint of our trip. The hotel does not have laundry facilities as it is listed on hotels.com. However, the staff was great and location was great and I would stay here on another visit to Cortona.

A great choice if you want to explore the town.

I stayed at the hotel in early March and it appeared to be a quiet period. The decor was a exactly as I'd expected from the website (no nasty surprises) and the room was spacious and spotless. The WIFI was fine for my purposes.

There were two proprietors who appeared to alternate shifts. Both (Diego & Filippo) spoke perfect English and could not have been any friendlier or more helpful.

Breakfast was an ample choice of cereals, croissants, fruits etc but the hidden gem was the panoramic view of the surrounding area from the fourth floor dining room. Simply breathtaking.

I will definitely use this hotel as a base for future trips to the town.

Nice hotel with a great location.

I would definitely recommend staying here. I had a warm greeting upon reception by Diego, who also took the time to make a handwritten map of the town and directions to a restaurant I should try, since he had just run out of the normal town maps. The complimentary breakfast was quite good as well too! Also, the location of this hotel is great if you are driving and need to park a vehicle. One of the public parking lots is a short walk down a very steep hill (FYI).

Perfect location, beautiful view

Perfect location - steps away from the main piazza in Cortona. The room was comfortable, and the view from the breakfast room on the top floor is a sweeping view of the entire valley. And the staff was warm, friendly and helpful, with some great restaurant recommendations. We'll definitely stay again when we return to Cortona!

Beauty, comfort and wonderful people.

A lovely, comfortable hotel in a beautiful location with spectacular views. The staff was beyond excellent going out of their way to help us as we navigated through the issues related to driving in a hilltop medieval town. I have been in Italy many times but everything here was so delightful and beautiful it will always remain a highlighted memory.

Perfectly located in delightful centre of Cortona

We enjoyed our one night in the Italia very much, especially the very friendly and helpful reception staff and the unusually good breakfast with stunning roof-top view.
Another time we would leave the car at the bottom of Via Guelfa - outside the wall - rather than take the obstacle course again which is driving through those narrow, steep streets!
