Very Close to the old town was perfect too. 5 min walk to the gate. close to scooter rentals, amazing restaurants, and the sunday market.

Pros - location (old town), close to all city attractions. Staff was helpful.

Cons - Room was large but outdated. My room's shower floods due to the glass partition not being sealed at the bottom. One of the lamps switch was broken hence was always on. Breakfast was the same everyday. I stayed 4 nights and saw the same exact food. Taste wasnt so great as well.

Hotel was ok, welcoming and friendly staff.
Room was pretty basic for a ''supreme'' Room but was comfortable and more than suitable for our one night stay. Seemed tea and coffee had been forgotten but no biggie, the air con unit outside rattled away but as it wasn't overly warm, we just switched it off. Good shower in the bathroom.

Breakfast was good with plenty to choose from, hot and cold, western and local choices and regularly replenished.

Was expecting more I guess as I had booked an upgrade but overall, the hotel was absolutely fine form the one night and would stay again, especially for it's location to the old city.

Staffs were friendly and I like the quiet environment however, the shower facility in my room was terrible. The drainage was super slow and the water only subside five minutes after my shower. Highlighted to the front desk staff and they say will look into it but sadly, nothing was done throughout my for nights stay. The water temperature for the heater was inconsistence and need to be cautious during shower.

The staff were very helpful in holding my bag when i had a late flight and organising a last minute day tour and my taxi to the airport. Always friendly and smiling. I can not fault the staff even the cleaning staff were friendly.
The room i had was a little dissapointing compared to previous reviews. I had a room on the top floor which had a very noisy air con unit on the balcony (this should be noted somewhere) which caused me a bad sleep. Paint was coming off the walls, the bedside lights looked like they were falling off with one screw holding them on, a main light in the room not working, no tea or coffee even though there is a kettle and cups provided (slightly confusing) no bath plug, the bed had 2 sheets with the duvet which kept getting twisted during the night and showing previous stains, no hair dryer, the air con settings box was too high for me to reach and both chair cushoins were not attatched to the chair frame.
I was here with a group the day before in much a better room. Best to pay a little more and get a nicer room.

Noisey hotel in central location

Had a complete heck of a night, some water tank / dripping noise coming from somewhere that contributed to me been awake all night.
Then got to argue with staff the next day over 20 baht at check out - they tried charging me for drinkin two bottles of water which are supposed to be free.
Apparently the two free bottles are the glass ones not the plastic ones but nobody told me.
Plus hotel was full of young people doing group activities who made quite a din coming back in from bars.
Shame because the room looked fantastic and had a lot of querky character to it.

The pictures of the Hotel make it look far better than it actually is. At best this is a 1 1/2 or 2 star hotel, certainly not 3 1/2. Room was a superior room however there was nothing superior about it. It was very small and the bathroom combined shower sink and toilet was smaller than most closets and only fit 1 person in it. Room was not very clean. dirt, grime, hair, fluff around the place, that looked like it had been there for months. Hotel is very outdated run down and looks like hasn't changed for 40 yrs. We think this hotel caters to large groups of young back packers as evident from all the packs lined up in the reception area most of the time. On positive note, the location is good. We were booked in or three nights but checked out after two and moved to another hotel . The lady at reception was very good when we explained why and transferred us to our new hotel by hotel shuttle for free. The breakfast was also very poor .

Visited Chiang Mai during their lantern festival (Yee Peng) which I wasn't aware until I arrived. - it was very special to see lanterns floating into the sky and parades.

Extra night after G Adventures Trek

No complaints here!! Big, comfortable bed. Nice bathroom. Adequate wifi- ok in rooms but great by the pool or in the main dining area. Lovely pool!! And good restaurant. Very clean. Peaceful in the morning means easier sleep ins! Plenty of food and massages nearby. 5mins walk to Chiang Mai Gate and Old Town, 20-30 to Night Bazaar.

Don't trust their airport shuttle bookings sheet- I got caught out and had to find another taxi last minute.

Good hotel near the old city

Pretty good hotel. There are two parts to this hotel, what appears to be an older building and a newer (or perhaps refurbished) one. I was in the older one. It was fine, although the shower was terrible (water went from ice cold to scalding - literally- in seconds, without touching the nozzle and there was no way to moderate this). Room needed better lighting. A/C in the room was fine. The lobby was too hot, though. The buffet breakfast was pretty good. The wifi in the lobby was good but it was terrible to non- existent in the rooms so you had to go to the lobby to get wifi. The pool was nice and they provided separate pool towels. The location of the hotel was good, close to the old city (walkable). Hotel provided free shuttles to the night market, although I had to wait an hour past the posted time one night because I was alone and a big group was an hour late. This made me angry. If you post a time, I shouldn't have to wait because others are an hour late.

Nice hotel. We booked this using Booking that transferred us to Expedia. In that transfer, dark magic seemed to happen and our dates were shifted out by a month, but the Manager was very good about it, and said \"No problem, we have space you can stay\". There was some grief with Expedia. Do not bother calling their call center, it is in a machinery repair depot somewhere in India where it is too loud to use telephones. Email them. They were very good about shifting dates and paying our penalty (same as room charge) to the Chiang Mai Gate Hotel promptly.

The hotel itself had a nice lobby, clean, classic look. Easy two minute walk to the actual south gate of the city. Friendly staff who were very helpful. Room was classic, clean, compact but nicely finished. Had a lot of carved woodwork. No view from the room. Shower, no tub. We were located in a wing adjacent to the hotel. King sized bed, no smoking room, fresh sheets, very nicely turned out.

One unfortunate experience - we went to TWO massage shops across the street. Of twenty five massages in Thailand, the worst - by far - happened in those two shops. Avoid them. We needed two massage girls. In both cases one called her untrained friend and talked her - in Thai - through the massage. One, while texting on her cell phone while my buddy was face down. This isn't the hotel of course - just across the street.

Great experience with the hotel, and nearby convenience store.

Weird and dark, mouse in restaurant

Room smelled very musty. There were also mosquitoes. The bathroom layout was weird and dark. The lobby was essentially outside. So when people were smoking, it came right in. Breakfast was not good. And the was a mouse running around the restaurant. I don't think I need to say anymore.

This is a lovely part of Chiang Mai. It is very near the old town. There are many interesting places in walking distance. There is a market on saturday on a nearby street. And a market by the moat eveyday - or at least it was when we were there. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We also had breakfast included with the room, buffet style. My only criticism was the coffee - upside was there was a good little coffee shop directly opposite. There is also a clean swimming pool. The value for money here is excellent.

We returned to this hotel following a 3-day stay in early 2014. Service has deteriorated significantly; quality of breakfast is very low. Desk staff not helpful in internet connections, printing documents, or securing taxi / tuk-tuk transportation. Traffic at all hours is horrific. Will not return.

Great location, hotel needs some improvement

We stayed at the Gate for 10 days in a deluxe room. Would not of liked to of stayed in anything less as room is quiet small. There was also no tea or coffee facilities available in room only in the larger suites which are quiet expensive for what you get. Back packers seem to flock to this hotel which is not an issue but speaks volumes about the appearance of the hotel. The hotel really needs to work on its appearance & some of the service desk staff are in need of some serious hospitality training.The Hotel itself is in dire need of a facelift we never used the lift as it opened into awfully rundown hallways and revolting stained carpet. Also the b'fast not too good & the doors to the b'fast area were glass and never cleaned in the 10 days we stayed yuk not very inviting. Other than that the pool is wonderful & the taxi drivers & tour guides at the hotel were really great, majority of staff lovely & helpful but some on the service desk really did let the hotel down. However I would stay again as every one deserves a 2nd chance & its feedback that helps this process, also fantastic position in nice area quiet , but not far from the old city also brilliant eats & markets around.

The hotel was nice and clean. The rooms are a bit old fashioned but comfortable.

One thing that bothered me was when we left our luggage with the staff after we checked out. We left our belongings there because we were going on a day tour and didn't fly until the evening. When we returned our bags were sitting unattended in the lobby. We picked them up and walked out and straight into a taxi without anybody questioning us or asking to see a bag receipt. We could have taken all the bags that were on the floor and nobody would have said a thing. Just a small thing but maybe best to keep things with you instead of leaving them with the staff.

Nice hotel, good location!

We would definitely stay here again. Nice hotel, and nice rooms. A little older but all in all, everything was in pretty good shape. They kept the room nice and clean for us.

This place was about location for us. It was super convenient, easily able to walk into the middle of Chiang Mai to visit all the temples, and the street stalls they set up on the edge of the town square (super close). And for those that enjoy Thai massages like my husband and I did, there are a few cheap massage places within a few hundred yards of the hotel. It was nice to end our day with a relaxing (and cheap!) foot massage and then just walk across the street to our room :)

The staff was friendly and helpful. They provided a free shuttle service for us to go to the Anusarn Night Market, and the Sunday Night Market, which was super helpful. Our stay also included free breakfast, which consisted of a decent buffet with a lot of options. The restaurant/lounge also had good appetizers (we didn't eat any other meals there).

Great location and very good value. We stayed in what looked like the recently refurbished rooms which were clean and comfortable and had a nice atmosphere, however there are areas of the hotel that do look a little dated. Hotel was close to most old town sights and there is a weekend night market 10mins away. Breakfast was good, but could have catered better for vegetarians. Staff were courteous. We would gladly stay here again.

Unfortunately we checked in here due to the high reviews, but had a different experience. Our room was fine, but had a weird odor. The bathroom, especially the bathtub was so disgusting, we didn't even want to stand in there barefoot. In addition, the restaurant tables were covered with ants each morning we went down for breakfast. It makes you lose your appetite quick. I would not recommend this hotel to friends. For the same amount, our cheaper, there are better places to stay.

Some nice touches but not value for money.

The bed was comfortable. The hot water kept running out.The shower rose was poorly located 7 feet up on the wall. The towels were hard. No thought on powerpoints in room - was only 2 and poorly placed. Included breakfast was extremely basic. Only thing I could tell it was an executive room by the inclusion of a hairdryer. Are much better options in Chiang Mai for the price charged, IMO.

Nice hotel for the price. Beds comfortable, room spacious, good aircon, breakfast ok, more variety would be nice and maybe food warmers to keep eggs etc warm. Kettle in the room would also be a bonus. Good location, close to old city, massage and plenty of food, saturday market also. Yet no street noise in room! The wifi is very slow and spotty however so if you need for work, then be patient.

It was a great hotel that is near to the Chiangmai Gate thus easy to get transport and to visit the nearby restaurants/temples. 5 minute drive from the night market and was easy to get food around here 24/7. Near to pharmacy. My suggestion is to skip the breakfast and eat the food in the vicinity.

THIS HOTEL IS A GOOD VALUE

I hoped this hotel was going to be a hidden gem after reading the reviews on Expedia so I booked it for a 1 night stay. If you're not big on free breakfast buffets, then I strongly suggest this hotel as a good value option.

The room seemed recently updated, including the carpet and a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was older and possibly next on the list of upgrades. The quality of hotels seem to be a step above comparatively priced examples in Bangkok so overall I found it good value.

The dinner we had was outstanding! It was obviously a different staff with a higher set of standards and/or training than the breakfast team. Go for the the fish and chips if you need a break from Asian food for a day, although my roommate reported her Asian choice was also very good.

Basically everything was above expectations until we ate breakfast the day we checked out. Honestly, they really should discontinue it if they aren't going to put in the effort! What a downer after such a positive experience up to that point!

When we complained about the cold food the staff did not really care, however they did re-heat the items we wanted. (didn't replace with fresh food - reheated the old food!)

Anyway if the value of the breakfast isn't a deciding factor when you're booking then go ahead and give this hotel a try. If you're lucky you might catch the breakfast staff on a good day!

Had my money stolen

After leaving the hotel I've noticed that a note of 1000 baht disappeared from my wallet. Apparently, cleaning staff took an opportunity while I was heaving breakfast, as it was the only occasion when I didn't have my wallet with me. Of course, leaving the wallet unattended in the room in the plain sight was not the smartest thing to do as well...

Otherwise – poor breakfast, dirty pool (actually there are frogs living in it, you can spot them at night). Spacious and comfortable room, acceptable Wi-Fi speed.

very disappointing. went here to get a bit of luxury but was anything but. took ages to check in, the pool was closed for repair but wasn't informed on arrival. room was ok and bed comfortable, but only two of the smallest pillows i've ever seen. the bathroom was horrible. the toilet didn't flush, there was only a dirty bath tub with shower attachment. decrepit tiling and hair on the floor. no wifi in room. breakfast was disappointing- what was cooked had all gone cold. easy to get taxi/song taew/tuktuk to chiang mai gate (south) then a 3 min walk. this is an old hotel and they have clearly spent some money renovating the downstairs (reception & restaurant), but they badly need to do the rooms. price if just turn up would have been 1800b (not using hotels.com), if i had paid that i'd want a refund. we checked out after one night and moved to jasmine boutique hotel, which is so much better.

One night stay.

Though the hotel is conveniently located, and is filled with guests, it needs major renovation of its rooms. We were in the so-called newer wing's deluxe rooms which were small even for one person. The tv was placed in front of the dresser mirror making it unusable. However, the hotel kindly gave me an upgrade from the standard room I had originally ordered so I could be close to my friends for whom I had ordered a deluxe. The room was clean and the night spent was comfortable. Breakfast the next day was good with a fine variety of food. It was fine for one night; I woukd not wish to stay longer.

Check out anytime, never leave.

It's my second stay at the Chiang Mai Gate Hotel. I usually holiday for three weeks, stay for several days at the Chiang Mai Gate, take a trip for a few days on the Green Bus to parts of Thailand I haven't visited, and return to the Chiang Mai Gate Hotel. It always feels I'm returning to my home in Thailand upon my arrival back.

Chiang Mai Good Value

The Chiang Mai Gate Hotel was clean and comfortable - so pretty decent for the price. They deal with lots of tour groups in and out and were willing to hold luggage and provide a lock box for a 3 day period for no extra charge. Breakfast was included in the price of my room and the selection each day was very good. I did think the bar and business area could have used some updating - the computers available never did work during my stay.

Pleasant place, good location

The Chiang Mai gate hotel is a nice little hotel, 20-25 minutes walking distance from the night market. The place has a pleasant atmosphere, not like a hostel at all, which I thought was great for the price. Cheaper rooms are in the older part. Nice breakfast buffet, pleasant pool area. There's a small fountain in the driveway area. Have stayed in plainer places for the same price. I saw many older couples in the breakfast area, although they didn't seem to be with tours.

Good value close to markets....

Hotel is good, lots of amenities close to the Saturday night market ... Right on the gate easy to find... No complaints except no tea and coffee in room and no face or hand towels which is no big deal really!
Hotel staff don't understand English very well.... I would recommend

Good location, hotel a bit outdated

Short walk to the old city walls from this hotel with a few shops and restaurants on the way. Moped hire available through the hotel which is great for exploring the city and also making the trek up to Wat Doi Suthep if you'd rather make your own way than be transported there. Its worth the trip on a clear day although take an extra layer of clothes as it gets cold the higher you go! On a Saturday there is a walking night market very close the hotel which is worth visiting - lots of stuff on sale that I hadn't seen at the normal night market. There are also some nightly food stalls nearby just outside of the old city - we ate from these a few nights and the food was excellent and inexpensive.
The pool on site was clean and well kept although imagine it could feel a bit crowded at busy times as it is pretty small. The rooms were comfortable although the corridors and rooms felt a bit dated and in need of modernising. Laundry service available for minimal cost and clothes returned very promptly. Breakfast was reasonable with the usual selection of eggs, noodles, toast, meat & salad. The staff were friendly although they seemed a bit stressed at times when it was busy. We organised a very early morning flight transfer to Chiang Mai through the hotel which was very straight forward and easy.

Good location and service

You can't really expect much for the price, but the value of this stay was pretty good. The hotel has a good location, about a 20 minute walk from two of the major temples in the city. The service was great. I do have two minor complaints. The shower seemed to have a mind of it's own (showerhead would come on for no reason). And the breakfast wasn't very appealing. But like I said, you can't expect a lot for the price.

Nice hotel just south of town

The Chiang Mai Gate is a sleepy hotel in a fast growing city. It is set 2 blocks south of the city square and is in walkable distance to anything in Chiang Mai. The hotel itself is more like an upscale motel 8 than a destination hotel but it is clean, has a nice pool and a good atmosphere.

Perfect Proximity

We stayed for 6-days and were impressed considering the reviews we went through. The hotel may not be a Hilton or Hyatt but it's dainty and livable. Additionally, it is close to everything and if you don't mind walking, you can walk everywhere from this hotel. We only used a taxi for one day, when we wanted to go to the temple on the mountain, other than that, we walked everywhere and to all of the street markets and the night bazaar. Hotel staff were peaceful and as helpful as they could be, despite the language barrier. We stayed in the basic room, the one that did not require an upgrade. The room was spacious and pretty clean. The bathroom looked like it could use new tile or a good deep clean but you can tell it was cleaned daily. The tiles just had the mold in the cracks that is very hard to clean after years of use. Nothing you can't deal with for a time, we did, we did NOT get sick, and took multiple showers daily (due to the heat and humidity we often felt gross). Finally, the breakfast buffet was tasty and there were several dishes to choose from, American and Thai, and a fruit selection. There were limited items and a few of the main items had three rotations (i.e., the first, fourth, seventh day and so on, had the same items; the second, fifth and eighth day had the same items; the third, sixth and ninth day had the same items). Overall, we had an awesome experience and would recommend this place to ANYONE!!! Happy searching and safe travels!

Good for just passing through

It was ok,all basic need were met!! Really good for a budgeted short stay! Breakfast wasnt great but the staff is very nice &helpful! Watch out for mosquitoes!. Shower curtains were filthy, but other than that it was ok!!

Overall I was happy with the hotel. The staff were polite, willing and friendly. It was quiet enough at night for sleeping and the bathroom was certainly acceptable. The only downside was the rather bland breakfast, but this said I would be happy to stay there again. It's close to Chiang Mai Gate, but far enough away to be quiet. It is also in a nice setting !.

My partner and I stayed at Chiang Mai Gate Hotel for 6 nights during our honeymoon. It was a very pleasing stay and we would definitely return to the hotel in future.

The hotel is located 5 minutes walk from Chiang Mai Gate and is very easy to find. The street is quiet enough that you can walk to/from the hotel without worrying about being knocked down by crazy drivers but busy enough that you can feel safe walking down the road without being completely isolated.

If you walk a couple minutes to the main road at Chiang Mai Gate, it is very easy to catch taxi, tuk-tuk, or red truck. Initially we were catching tuk-tuks everywhere but eventually we realised it is much cheaper to catch the local red trucks.

In terms of food, the in-house restaurant served good quality dishes for a decent price. The menu had a good range of choices, but we mainly ate in the hotel restaurant for breakfast. Breakfast choices included different types of eggs, rice, breads, toast, fruit, juices, tea/coffee, and some thai dishes amongst other things. The food was always fresh and topped up.

We stayed in a standard room. The bed was comfortable, the room was spacious, and the bathroom was clean. The bathtub/shower also had a curtain so we did not have water all over the floor/toilet.

Inside the hotel is not buzzing like a massive 5 star hotel but we did not want that. It had a very relaxing and homely feel.

The hotel has tour booking facilities but you may be able to get cheaper tours outside.

excellent hotel for the price

For the price this is an excellent hotel, the staff are very pleasant and friendly, the breakfast was basic but good and the restaurant excellent. The hotel is also situated close to all the main attractions of Chiang mai. One draw back there is no tea or coffee facilities in the rooms. I had agreat three weeks at this hotel.
