Lovely friendly hotel - staff were all extremely accommodating and helpful. We felt very welcome with our toddler. Our room was large and warm with a beautiful view of the mountains. Easy parking, delicious breakfast, excellent food at the hotel restaurant and within easy reach of Salzburg and nearby winter sports. Would recommend and stay again!

Charming and comfortable hotel

Great 3 nights here while exploring Salzburg, halstatt, eaglesnest, konigsee, and Berchesgarden. Hotel is Ideally located for these in a charming village with bavarian style buildings and church. Hotel itself is of same style but modern inside. Room was comfortable, very clean, spotless everywhere. Great nights sleep, comfortable beds, lovely balcony to look out on town and mountains beyond. Breakfast was very comprehensive and tasty, staff very helpful, most had very good english.
Definitely would stay again.

Great cozy hideaway south of Salzburg. We were a family group of 3 and the room was very comfortable and well equipped. The owner was super friendly and accommodating and the breakfast buffet was great. The best of Austrian hospitality at a reasonable price. Would definitely go back!!!

Perfect for a one night stay. Room was very warm and no air con or fan, but the windows opened wide so it was ok. Room very big for a single. Dog friendly.

This property was beautiful and had great views. We really enjoyed staying here however the one thing we wish we would’ve known before booking was that our room didn’t have a shower like shown in the property’s pictures. Our room had a bathtub with a shower hose but you couldn’t shower as there was no curtains or doors.

Wonderful for family

Liked: Breakfast was great with a variety of food. The garden was pretty.
Didn't like: The hotel is much older than it appears to be online, it could use a renovation or at least changing the photos online. The room I received was dirty - I had 2 long pubic hairs in the shower, a stained pillow case and a few spider webs. Additionally, there's a church right in front of the room which rings every 15 minutes, and at 7 am it rings for at least 3 minutes.

Not bad but there is room for improvement.

The stay was OK, but not great. The staff were friendly and the service was good. The food was pretty good too. However, the beds were stiff and uncomfortable. And they made a LOT of noise while moving about, enough to wake up my partner just to find a comfortable position. There was no shower head attached high enough so, we had to use the manual shower head with one hand while bathing with the other one. Very inconvenient. Then finally, the cleaning lady came into our room completely unnanounced, without first knocking or checking if there was anyone inside first. Very awkward.

Awesome hidden gem with lots of outdoor space

We really loved staying at this spot! It's literally right by the border, and it's a great location if you're going to the Konigsee area - just a beautiful 20 min drive away! It's also quite close to Salzburg.
The hotel itself was awesome. Pretty modern, amazing breakfast with lots of fresh food, and a great outdoor space.
The hotel even helped us out with room service. We'd totally stay here again!

The hotel is located next to the border, the location is good, although quite noisy. It is located right next to a church and the main road. The windows are not thick enough to sustain the noise from outside.
The hotel itself is nice but relatively old. The room was small.
The Breakfast was nice and sufficient and they have a nice outdoor siting area.

Location is perfect, only 20 minutes drive from Salzburg and you enjoy the exceptional beauty of the Austrian Alps. Parking is easy, restaurant has variety of local dishes and wahtever we had, we enjoyed them all. Kids friendly place with spacious room.

Church Bells!!!!

I booked two rooms. When arriving I requested a quite room. They changed my room at check-in to a room over the garden (where everyone congregates for dinner and drinks) but the room my traveling companions received was on floor directly across from church and the bells rang every 15 minutes starting at 7:00am through10:00pm. Please be aware!

My experience was pretty good. I got of the train in Salzburg and thankfully there was a bus to go towards the city where the hotel is at. The bus does run every hour to every 2 hours on the weekend though so watch out for that. Every morning the breakfast was delicious and amazing. Thank you for a plesant stay.

Great view from our room. Small town so not much to do but a great location as a home base for Eagles Nest, Salzburg, etc. Room was large (3 adults) and had a twin sleep sofa and a double twin together. Modern bathroom. The on-site restaurant had a great selection of German and Austrian dishes. Food was fresh and delicious. Included breakfast offered a good selection of breads, pretzels, cold meats and cheeses, fruit, yogurt juices and coffee ( espresso, cappuccino, etc.). Would definitely stay her again.

Charming inn in quiet village 30 minutes outside of Salzburg. Outstanding restaurant with terrace dining and English menu. Many rooms offer balconies with Alpine mountain views. Spacious rooms and plenty of free parking. Awkward showers that make a wet mess.

Beautiful retreat steps from the mountains.

Simple and clean Gasthaus in an absolutely gorgeous part of Germany/Austria (about 50 yards from the border) with easy access to Salzburg, Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden. Great breakfast. Friendly staff. Good areas to go jogging.There is even your very own 12th century castle (Plainburg) to explore within walking distance of the hotel.

Loved the location so much, and the room was huge and totally sufficient (we were three to the room). Biggest downside was lack of reliable internet--there is internet (wifi/wlan), but it cuts out so regularly that you have to continuously reconnect, which just gets old.

This hotel is great. It’s way cheaper than trying to stay in Salzburg and only about 20 minutes from downtown. If you want to explore the area you’ll need a car. If you only want to visit the city then the ÖBB bus 180 picks you up at the hotel and goes straight to Salzburg hbf for less than €3. The hotel has everything you need for the low price you’re spending. It has a good european style breakfast for free and the rooms are brand new and very nice and comfortable. The small town that the hotel is in has a few restaurants and a small market all within easy walking distance. And most importantly, the view is incredible. Will definitely stay here if ever back in the area.

This was a great hotel. The room was spacious, modern, clean and had great views from the balcony. The breakfast was delicious with many choices. We had dinner at the restaurant and the food was great and the prices were reasonable. The only drawback was the very loud church bells across the street starting at 7 a.m. You may want to keep the windows closed.

The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful setting with hundreds years old buildings as well as an old church and spectacular mountain peaks. The food at the hotel restaurant is excellent for both breakfast and dinner. We would have enjoyed staying here for more than two nights, but had to head to our next destination - Vienna.

Great little place just outside Salzburg. It took us roughly 15 minutes driving (own car) to get to downtown Salzburg, but the location is great and secluded.

We had our 8 month old with us, and had given prior notice, so they set us up with a crip and everything before we arrived. Overall service was nice and the restaurant staff was AWESOME. For my wife's birthday they had dinner arranged, with wine and cake. I had only asked that they make it special, and they did the rest.

Far from city centre

If you are planning to visit Salzburg city it's not an ideal place .It is far from the city centre.A taxi will cost you fortunes.The hotel itself is very basic and follow the very old-fashioned system.I wouldn’t recommend if you are a tourist.Its very close to German border but there are no shops or restaurants nearby .Hotel have their on local menu but if you want choices there isn’t any.Even nearest McDonalds is 12 kilometres away from the place.

A comfortable stay at a friendly hotel

My family stayed at Hotel Vötterl for one night and we were happy with pretty much everything. Our room was cleaned and orderly, the hotel owner was considerate in adding an extra bed for my older children. My dog's even got her special feeding bowls. Breakfast was hearty and we loved that the hotel is not far from many attractions in Austria and Germany.

Amazing view

We weren't very fond of the breakfast but that wasn't the hotels fault, we just do not care for European breakfast. The only other thing I would suggest is maybe a little softer beds, it did kinda feel like sleeping on a board. But it was really wonderful and none of these things would keep me from coming back to stay! The staff was very friendly, rooms very clean and neat. The view is absolutely amazing!

Lovely comfort in a quiet location

The hotel is about 20 minutes outside of Salzburg which was just perfect. We were able to get into town easily by car but also had plenty to explore within a 30 mile radius of this perfect location. The room was large, beds were comfy and it was nice to sleep with the windows open and not have a busy city outside. We ended up staying there 4 days because it worked so well for everything we wanted to see. Breakfast was good, the restaurant has great food and there are three other restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

What a beautiful location! The staff were amazing. The restaurant was great, the food was priced reasonably and tasted great. The room was really big and had a nice balcony looking over the garden. Breakfast comes free with your stay, and includes a buffet of yogurt, cereal, eggs, lots of breads, meats, cheeses, fruits and vegetables. No fridge or coffee maker in the room.

Really comfortable room, amazing view. great staff. Restaurant is closed on Wednesday nights but there is an excellent restaurant just a 2 min walk down the road Kaiser Karl, very reasonable prices too. No facilities in the room to make own hot drinks but other than that a lovely place to stay.

Great misty mountain view!

What a nice place to stay with family outside of Salzburg! We stared at the mountains from our private terrace each day - what an excellent view. The included breakfast was wonderful. Everyone seemed so welcoming. We didn't explore the local area much (lack of time), but the hotel is right next to the pleasant, quiet, folksy town buildings of Großgmain.

Fantastic location in mountains

The hotel is situated close to mountains right on Austrian / German border. It has wanderful views of the mountains all round. It is a nice drive by car into Salzburg. Their is a post bus 180 wichi can take you in and back to Salzburg and if you get a Salzburg trip it covers the cost of this bus as well as visits to great attractions.

Lovely historic hotel in beautiful village

Only half an hour or less to the center tree of salzburg. Easy to find and lovely village. You can eat the hotel which has lovely meals, inside or outside area, beautiful garden setting. Or there are about three restaurantseparate within 5 mins walk, even an Italian one ! We had the cheapest room which was on third floor at top, quiet but a bit stuffy in summer. Would pick the next price room up next time. Very nice place to stay. Free parking, great views.

Beautiful area- needs a shuttle service!

This hotel is in a very beautiful location and is clean with very comfortable beds. Elisabeth was super kind and helpful- she waited for us til 1:30am to check in when we found ourselves in the predicament of having to walk 9 miles in the dark and during thunderstorms from Salzburg to Grossgmain to the hotel. You MUST have a car or have $50-$60 for each ride up/down into Salzburg as the bus service is limited and irregular- especially on the weekends. Besides walking all that way with my 10&13 year old daughters, we also missed our tour the next day due to a 3 hour gap between bus runs. Hotel Votterl would really benefit their guests by offering some sort of shuttle service! The area is incredibly beautiful though and a couple yards from the German border which was cool! Breakfast was sufficient but the morning staff a bit surly and not very welcoming I have to say.

Beautiful hotel outside Salzburg

Loved this hotel! It's about a 15-20 minute drive into Salzburg in a small little town. The hotel staff were so kind and helpful, even helped arrange a cake for one of our kids on her birthday. We did pay a little more than we were quoted, but it was delivered in the morning and we were able to eat cake for breakfast, dinner and breakfast the next morning because the staff kept it for us. The local bakery did an awesome job and the staff even lit candles and everything. A little gesture that made our 11 yo feel special. The room itself was clean, large and cute. Our only complaint is that because it was on the 5th floor it was stuffy and warm. A fan would have been perfect, and the hotel should put those in the rooms. Breakfast in the morning is typical of Europe and good. We ended up having dinner there as well and the food and service is great. We really loved this hotel and the little town. I would highly recommend this hotel if you have a means to get to Salzburg. So much better that staying in a city! Wi-fi was a bit dodgy but we figured the connection was due to our distance from the main floor. It only worked in certain areas of the room.

Family trip to Salzburg

We wanted to stay in a village setting outside Salzburg to experience the true countryside. We were thrilled by our experience at Hotel Votterl. We arrived late, after the kitchen had closed, but the 2 staffers in the bar gave us a few food options and we had a hearty late dinner of carrot soup, salad, ham and cheese grilled sandwiches. Plus some beer, of course. It was delicious and perfect. Our room was clean- we had it set up for a family of four (2 adult children + parents) and was very comfortable. We were delighted to hear the nearby church bells ringing in the morning & a beautiful mountain view out of our balcony. We ate breakfast on tables outside- with a view of the Alps- assorted cold meats and cheeses, breads, tomatoes, yogurt, eggs, coffee, tea was just right. We toured Salzburg that day- easy 20 min. drive- and consciously decided to return to the hotel for dinner instead of eating in Salzburg. We were very happy we did this because we had a typical Austrian dinner- which was excellent- and got to watch a packed restaurant filled with townspeople enjoying their evening. This was clearly a gathering spot for the village... townspeople obviously eat here a lot. In our travels, we figure the locals always know best. We also learned, by chatting with the staff, that the hotel had been in the Votterl family for several generations. There clearly is a lot of love and care taken here to be good hosts. We highly recommend if you want an authentic Austrian experience.

We absolutely loved this hotel in the outskirts of Salzburg. You open the door to the balcony and boom! Gorgeous views of the Alps. The whole area is incredible. The staff is polite and helpful, breakfast was very tasty too, and price was fair. We can't wait to go back and would stay there again a hundred times!

Clean hotel with rural location

The stay was comfortable and service was friendly. The food was good too. it was a quite spacious room with lovely views. the location of the hotel is interesting as it is in a village and about 100 meters from the border between Germany and Austria. there is only one bus service that connects this location to the Salzburg City and Airport. It is about 35 minutes to get to the city and about 20 minutes to get to the airport.

Scaled the Alpinesteig while there. Easy and pleasant climbing.

Nice Hotel, Perfect Location

My husband and I stayed in this hotel because it was centrally located to Salzburg and Berchensgarten region. The little town of Grossgmain was very quaint and had everything you needed, grocery store, bakery, metzgeri, etc. The Hotel was great, good food and great staff, very helpful in helping you plan day trips. We will definitely stay here again.

beautiful hotel ideal location

Loved this Hotel, would of given 5/5 however disappointed no restraunt or bar open on Wednesday evenings.
Was able to get a meal in another hotel which was not a problem. Would of liked access to drinks, or even perhaps a drink machine in hotel on return.
