Clean, very comfortable bed and great staff. Stayed 2 nights as we had a wedding there, so convenient. Nice continental breakfast. Lovely big room with sitting area. Coffee machine in our room, plus self serve coffee near reception. Walked 20mins to centre of town to restaurant. Train noisy and the bridge at front entrance was loud and woke us. Some construction going onsite as well. Pleasant stay.

We stayed at the Fitzroy Inn one weekend in July and we had an unexpectedly pleasant experience. We booked the place because it was one of the very few options in the area for staying with our dog (for an extra fee). We would go back even without a dog. The room was impeccably clean, the whole inn has a charming character. We ordered in and ate our dinner sitting by the fireplace in the common room. We read books, played some pool, listened to records on a turntable. Perfect chill evening. The self-guided walking tour of the property (in and out) the next day was interesting and informative.
Would definitely go back. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We’re stayed for a Saturday night to see the Borealis In Bowral, I met the lady at reception for check in, she’s wells explain everything .This place has a beautiful garden setting for everyone to relax. Highly recommended

Great historical site. Pet Friendly and we brought our puppy. You just need to bring their bed and an additional $40 per dog per night. It was Comfortable and cozy. Only thing to note is proximity to the Train station and tracks, trains passing and announcements from the station can be heard.
Some of the grounds were under repair, but not an issue. Staff were friendly and communication was great.
We would stay there again, next time we visit the area.

I thought the entire retreat was just wonderful, very peaceful and intimate. A special thanks to John and James for rescuing me in my hour of need. And to James who so graciously went to get our food order from Zambrero's - and to John for taking us to the train station the following morning. Best of luck running this wonderful retreat!

Wonderful Stay

Welcomed warmly by hosts and their cute dogs. Love the fact that the place has so much history and this history is explained via a self-guided 'walk' throughout the building. Room was comfortable enough, the continental breakfast was welcomed and the location perfect for a visit.

Comfortable stay

The school house ground floor room was very spacious and comfortable. In the room is a coffee machine and basic breakfast items.
The grounds of the Fitzroy Inn were lovely to wonder around despite it having rained.
The public areas in the Inn are lovely, interesting and full of history, though the musty smell was somewhat off putting.
I would stay again in the school house rooms.

Beautiful hotel in beautiful setting

This is a beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting. Staff were very helpful, they brought in logs (even though it was officially summer it was cool in the evening) and helped us light the fire place. The lounge is beautiful and we had it all to our selves with the fireplace going. Very happy with our stay.

A lovely historic inn with pretty gardens. Unfortunately the attractive parts were outweighed by not being able to make the shower run hot water despite reading the detailed instructions about the “old fashioned “ heater and trying for 15 minutes to get something other than a freezing cold shower. After a long day on the road we felt it was inexcusable to not be able to get a hot shower, especially as the inn purports to be an exceptional accommodation choice.

a little holiday

It's in a quiet location, and you can hear a few night trains nearby. I feel like I was in another world.
Large, quiet and clean room with a large jet bath. Outdoor tent for wedding receptions and meetings. A well-kept garden will calm your mind. Great for a morning walk. The on-site restaurant is closed for several years. The breakfast package was in the room and it was very helpful.

Only disappointment was there a marque on the tennis court, otherwise all good

The property is beautiful, and the room we had was comfortable & well appointed. However the gardens need a little bit of attention and the welcome we received on check-in was quite perfunctory. We were very swiftly shown to our room but no description given as to facilities or services. I even had to ask which key was for the external door and later had to go & ask for the Wifi password. This sort of information should be provided on check-in. In addition a brochure in the room described breakfast was available but there was no sign of it the following morning. Fortunately we had brought our own breakfast items with us. Indeed the restaurant on site seemed to be closed all weekend. We enjoyed our stay & loved the open fires in the various lounge rooms but would have appreciated a little more hospitality.

Fitzroy Inn is a fabulous historical property. It has been beautifully restored. It is a really fascinating location if you are interested in early settler history.
John and Chris are wonderful hosts. We really enjoyed our stay. We will definitely return!

Loved the property-lovely gardens and great room.

Staff serving breakfast commented that we were late at 9.30AM on a public holiday, which I did not appreciate. He said that breakfast was cold, accordingly. Asked us to sit at the one two-seater table that didn’t have forks or glasses, which we picked from other tables. Breakfast food not great - my expectations for breakfast were very different at its price point and knowing Southern Highlands high food standards in general

Room very clean however the following were very disappointing
no tissues, no air conditioning only a fan to try and keep a very hot room cool, could not have the bar fridge cabinet door closed due to overheating of the fridge when turned on. No housekeeping performed during our stay. Beautiful setting very quiet and peaceful but need to lift their game on housekeeping.

Nice place to stay, very historic, had tennis court but the restaurant was closed, had no chef but did provide continental breakfast. You could follow the self guided historic house tour. Had a cellar & well underneath. Open fires, great ambience. Only negative was no hot water, tepid.

The only reason we chose the hote was because they had a restaurant. It was closed. Mittagong on a Saturday night when it is 4C and blowing a gale is not a fun place. No suggestions about where we might eat. No heating in the room. No communication with reception and no one in site. We retired to bed at 7.30 to watch the small screen tv. Did not see a sole at the poor continental breakfast. It is handy to the train though. The main Sydney - Melbourne line runs through the fron garden. All in all a miserable place.

If you like a little history with modern comfort this is the place to stay , big comfortable rooms with beautiful gardens , a great restaurant and helpful friendly staff. You can enjoy a game of tennis or just relax on the veranda. There is plenty to do in the southern highland from antique shops to wineries. A great place just a few short hours from Sydney.

Stayed here 2008, a wonderful experience. Now in 2017 a great disappointment. Loft room dangerous to access as stair rail does not go right to top, shower screen doors off tracks, basin taps sprayed guests when on any more than a dribble. Garden has been neglected.
John, the owner, was the only staff member we saw in three days. Sadly he lacks good people skills and upset members of our group. His rudeness and sarcasm were unacceptable.

Stayed one night, nice room with outlook over garden - unfortunately could hear people arriving/leaving as we were overlooking the carpark (gravel driveway), and could hear people coming/going downstairs, doors opening/closing etc. Realise it's an old building but would be good to put 'silent closes' on doors to minimise the noise. Restaurant wasn't open for dinner - great building/gardens - think more could be done to keep guests on-site by providing bar/restaurant/lounge area - capitalise on amenities - seems to be just a boarding house with not much else to offer unfortunately.

Beautiful hotel, well appointed.

We were very pleasantly greeted. As there was no air conditioning in any of the rooms we were upgraded to a larger more airy room. We still needed a fan to make it comfortable. This was the only negative. We loved the historic walk around the hotel and wandering through the extensive and beautiful gardens. The rooms were well appointed with lounges, coffee tables and magazines to read we felt very comfortable. Even though the rail line is close we were not disturbed at all. The hotel has a very homely, gentle feel about it and we would love to have stayed longer.

Historic Retreat

We found the room disappointing for the amount of money it cost. There was no air conditioning, only a fan in the room (I didn't realise this when booking) luckily the weather was not too hot so was okay with the windows open. The Inn is very close to a train line so there are a few trains that travel during the night and if you are a light sleeper can be rather noisy. We stayed 3 nights and the room was serviced after the first night but not the second, so there were no clean towels or replacement shampoos etc. supplied for the next day. Also room was up quite a narrow and steep stairway, which was awkward for carrying suitcases up - anyone older may have found it difficult - we are in our early 60s. Staff were very friendly and helpful (although hard to find sometimes) - John the owner, showed us around some of the historic parts and also offered to take us to the Mittagong station instead of us having to hire a taxi.

Beautiful Historic Hotel in fantastic surrounds

We booked the evening before and were offered a great price. Unfortunately we were arriving a little late in the early evening but all arrangements had been advised over the phone and we basically let ourselves in. Such a simple process. The room was excellent, very large and nicely appointed. The grounds are marvellous and we could have spent a few days just enjoying the venue, the history, the solitude and of course the surrounding district.

A relaxing break in the Southern Highlands

Our stay was a very enjoyable overnight break. We loved the historic inn and appreciated the welcoming attitude of the host. We had an excellent dinner and were able to relax in a very comfortable wood fire in a beautifully decorated lounge. We also enjoyed exploring the area especially the antique shops.

We really enjoyed our stay in the peacock room - one of the upstairs attic rooms. The bed was large, the room tiny, but cosy. Host was very welcoming and helpful - we had everything we needed for an overnight stay. Included continental breakfast was sufficient. The inn has a fascinating history, including refurbishment - which are on display in the hallways. Convenient distance to Bowral and surounds.

We had a nice stay at the hotel for a wedding, overall environment and hotel in great condition. On arrival no one at reception and so I had to go looking for someone to help. Very expensive, and with no breakfast included in price we decided to go to McDonalds instead as the price of breakfast and the hotel room very expensive.

My wife and I had a lovely stay in the 'old world charm' that is the Fitzroy Inn.
We eat at the restaurant and had a very enjoyable evening - sharing a bottle of red recommended by the staff.
The grounds are private and secure - making the stay feel very safe.

The perfect choice

It was the perfect setting for a quiet celebration of a very special occasion. The essence of the historic building has been beautifully preserved and the gardens complement its gracious ambience. Our dinner in the restaurant was memorable both for its culinary expertise and the thoughtfulness of the delightful couple who are the Phatt Duck combo.
