Lovely castle. With great views! Room nice however Bathroom in room was a cupboard which let the room down. Breakfast was nice however overpriced for a limited selection, would be nice to have eggs royale for example. Also staff were very mixed on what was and wasn’t gluten free… a vegetarian breakfast was served instead. Not worth £17.50.

While the views and location are unbeatable, that’s about the only positive thing I can say for this sad, dilapidated hotel. I’m genuinely sad that such potential is in the hands of terrible management. Weird vibes, awful art, Scientology BS everywhere, hate-spewing right-wing owners. I genuinely hope someone comes along to save this sad grand dame. Also, the plastic RV bathroom pod in the room is UNHINGED. Save yourself the trouble and go to the King Arthur’s Arms.

Absolutely unique hotel, purchased as a family home. The staff are actually household staff of the owners and very helpful and friendly. We stayed in room 117, this is where A A Milne stayed and wrote some of his books!
Full of history and if you have time ask for a tour of the artist studios.

The location and views are exquisite. The exterior is beautiful and gives an exciting, mysterious feel. That is where the goodness ends. As soon as you enter the hotel, you enter a bizarre, cult-like atmosphere. The reception area is covered with pictures of the owner with famous people and a whole shelf showcasing his book. His face is everywhere! The other owner is an artist whose bizarre paintings cover every available surface in the hotel. Our room with a sea view was very basic with no amenities.

The bathroom is completely unacceptable. It is a plastic, modular unit tucked into the corner. I have seen larger bathrooms on airplanes. You could not raise your arms in the shower without hitting the walls. The flimsy shower curtain did not even go to the floor which meant the entire bathroom became wet and slippery.

The hotel feels rundown and neglected. The wallpaper in our room was dirty and there were cracks everywhere.

We left early after a strange conversation with the man at reception about religion and politics. The encounter gave me a uncomfortable feeling and we decided we did not want to stay our last night.

Overall, I was very disappointed. It could be an amazing place if the owners focused more on the guest experience and not their own.

I really wanted to like the Camelot, and wasn’t expecting it to be high spec or anything, but was mostly really put off by two things: the bedding was quite scratchy, and the bathroom was a complete shock.

Pros: large family room, lovely sea view, staff were friendly and helpful on the few occasions I spoke to them, and when we had an issue with the bathroom they accommodated us by allowing us to use a bath in an empty room. Also lovely walks straight out the door and you can walk along the coastal path straight to Tintagel castle.

Cons: definitely tired, a bit more than I expected given the price. Charged £20 per dog per night but no idea what for as nothing was provided not even a dog bowl. The bed was lumpy and the linen was scratchy and I’m not normally sensitive to that sort of thing.

And finally the bathroom…we were in a classic family room, I’m not sure what the bathrooms are like in other room types but it was basically a caravan bathroom awkwardly plonked in the room, no chance of safely washing kids in there so I could not believe it was a family room. Thankfully as Expedia had stated it had a bath and shower they allowed us to go and use a bath on another room (the portable style bathroom had a toilet, a sink and a shower). It felt like something you get in a caravan / service station / student digs, NOT in a castle hotel where you’re paying £200+ per night.

The hotel should be honest with their guests and describe this appropriately, disappointed.

Beautiful Hotel, the scenery is stunning, the only faults are in some of the rooms they have had to add on suites, however they are so small it’s difficult to even move in them, if you are a tall person you would not even be able to use the bathroom with the door shut, it’s a shame because otherwise everything was lovely.

We booked to stay in a “luxury apartment” in a castle, they put us in an another building away from the castle instead! This building backed onto a building site complete with noisy vehicles, mess and a skip! Rear windows were filthy. Seaview was obstructed by a hill directly in front (the castle was at the top of the hill, and the accommodation they put us in was a few minutes walk below that).

Told on arrival they wouldn’t be cleaning during our 4 night stay. When we questioned this, hotel reception staff were rude and tried to gaslight us by saying we should have known and that we didn’t know what self catering accommodation meant!

There was no soundproofing, so we could clearly hear the people above us, children running around and children’s electronic toys being played with again and again.

The hotel restaurant bizarrely specialises in a combination of pizza and borscht.

The hotel clearly know that their listing is not accurate. Instead of trying to address our concerns, they were rude and bordering on menacing. Because the situation was so unpleasant and so bizarre, we did some research and discovered this has been going on a long time. They use a PR agency to create fake reviews.

Please see my photos so you can make an informed decision! If I’d wanted to stay in a horrible building with no privacy and no soundproofing and no cleaning and no services, I wouldn’t have needed to pay the prices that Camelot Castle Hotel are charging.

My room smelled like a sewer so requested a new room. There was another lady there who was so disappointed with the room and bathroom that she left the hotel. The en-suites are actually tiny pod bathrooms, kind of like a caravan. I am 5ft 4in and could sit on the toilet and touch the the walls on either side. The towel was small and thin. I was given an empty, dirty tea pot with my cream tea. The manager blamed the poor service on the the fact that no one wanted to work. The fireplaces were not lit, which would have been a nice ambiance for the lead up to Christmas. But... the food was good and there were a few lovely staff. The common areas are nice. I would not recommend a stay.

Lovely apartment

The apartment was separate from the main hotel and was lovely. It had been beautifully and tastefully decorated and was spotlessly clean. There were fantastic views of the coastline and Tintagel Castle. My only bugbear was that we arrived quite late on the Sunday (my birthday!) and ordered two roast beef dinners. Unfortunately, these meals were not cheap and were very disappointing as they were not freshly cooked and were akin to a microwave roast beef dinner.

Although the communal areas were nice and opulent this was not so for our bedrooms, desperately in need of decorating, draughty and damp around the windows, paint peeling off the ceiling, badly stained carpets, bathroom pods that were small and difficult to move around in. We were looking forward to staying at the hotel, despite the forecast weather. We checked in at 3pm and we were then shown to our room.

It was on entering the room, that our expectations clashed with the reality. The room was devoid of any colour, soft furnishings, pictures etc anything that would have made the room warm & welcoming was absent. Everything was white, white walls, white bed sheets etc.

My wife called me over to view the bathroom. I use the term “bathroom” loosely & only in the sense that there was a sink, a toilet, and a shower cubicle in a small boxed off area in the corner of the room.

This so called “bathroom” was a plastic pod that resembled an aircraft toilet and comparable to one in size. Had anyone felt the need to use the toilet, their knees would have been wedged hard against the door. I stood in the shower and drew the flimsy , cheap shower curtain across. My face was up against the curtain, only a Borrower would have found it spacious.

We complained to the man behind the desk. By his response to our complaint and general demeanour, you would have thought that he was a not too distant relative of Basil Faulty. When I explained the issue to him, his response was you booked the cheapest room - £160 p/n breakfast extra cheap !!! ????

I replied that they had appeared to have taken the concept of basic quite literally & it wasn’t good enough. We asked for a refund,. Having got a refund we located to a better hotel in nearby Boscastle.

As you drive towards the hotel, it really has the wow factor; a castle on the edge of a cliff next to the Atlantic Ocean. As you get closer you realise that its run down and hasn't been maintained externally for a number of years. Inside, you enter into the Great Hall, and again wow, a really lovely space on the ground floor with huge fireplaces and sweeping staircases. The first person we saw when when we entered the hotel was the owner, John Mappin, as guests in his establishment, It would have been great if he had welcomed us and asked us about our journey; instead, he simply dismissed us as if we were invading his space. The next person we met was the hotel Receptionist. Again, there was no welcome, just a perplexed look as we had arrived after a 5 hour journey at 1.50, when check-in opened at 2. We were told we were unable to check-in as the rooms were not ready, and told to go for a walk or a drive for a while - not even shown to the bar or longue to relax.
When we finally got our key, we were located on the second floor, as we entered the room (which cost £250 per night) we were welcomed by a large space cluttered with mis-matching, old furniture; the curtains were at least 30 years old and the curtain rail was hanging off the wall. Despite other reviews saying that the hotel decor was 'quirky' or 'shabby-chic', it isn't - it is simply shabby. £250pn can be so better spent with some research, the hotel is massively under-invested despite being at full capacity a lot.

We were only able to book a Standard room, but it was small, which would be OK, but the bathroom was like an airplane toilet with virtually no room to move in. Obviously as an old building that in the past had hallway bathrooms that we shared, this was a poor afterthought to upgrade the room to be able to ma t as an en suite bathroom.

The bathroom connected to our room was small considering the price and differed from the shown photos, possibly unlucky with the room given and the situation might be better in other rooms. However, the area and the room were nice. The lobby had strange smell, mostly likely due to old age of the property.

This property is in a stunning location but do be very careful what room you book. We had a four poster room with sea view so quite above a standard room and unfortunately the bathroom in this room was more like a caravan shower and toilet although probably even worse and smaller! as I have stayed in caravans and seen better bathrooms!! It was a massive let down.. other people did experience the same and you could upgrade for a hefty price to have a room with a proper en-suite. The bed itself was really creaky and the pillows soft and duvet too thick but that bit is personal preference. A lot of people checked out early because of the bathroom issue, I guess a lot of the room have these so called “en-suites..” I don’t expect to pay for a four poster bedroom which was quite big itself to then be expected to use this so called bathroom. I wouldn’t stay here again and you could stay somewhere much better with similar views.

2 days at Camelo Castle Hotel

I stayed at Camelot Hotel for 2 days. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the views were absolutely magnificent, unique and truly memorable. The outdoor areas of the hotel are gorgeous, and the surrounding landscape is breathtaking.

However, there were several issues that affected my stay. The toilets were of poor quality, resembling a plastic cabin more suited to yachts, which did not match the otherwise elegant design of the room. I had a private small balcony, but unfortunately could not use it, as it was directly connected to my neighbour’s window. Out of respect for their privacy and dignity, I chose not to sit outside.

The pillows were very uncomfortable, and I could not sleep the first night. Additionally, the TV was not operating, and although there was a video option available, it also did not function.

Overall, while the exterior and location of the hotel are truly impressive, these drawbacks made my experience less enjoyable, and I would not choose to stay here again.
