It's an older hotel, but I think that is part of its charm. I love the architecture of older places. My boyfriend and I loved the view from our window. We liked watching the storm come in the night we stayed. The elevator was down when we were there, but they were working to repair it. A buffet breakfast was included with our stay, and it was good. We didn't have dinner at the hotel so I can't speak to that. There were several restaurants within walking distance. We wanted to explore the town so walked to one of those. Staff was very friendly, and there was lots of room in the parking lot. I would stay there again should I revisit Scotland. ❤️

Unfortunately this hotel needs updating as its decor was well worn. There were no dining options available when we arrived at 8pm but we managed to eat at a nearby hotel. The hotel receptionist was welcoming and helpful but the staff in the dining room for breakfast were unhelpful. Food options for breakfast were edible but not something i would recommend.

Never been in such a dirty room. The food was very poor not worth what they charge and no response from manager or the parent company (Cairngorm Travel) to complaints.
My advice would be to book and stay somewhere else.

I had booked a superior room, the room I was allocated certainly wasn't suprerior. There was no towels, the toilet hadn't been cleaned properly and the light in the bathroom flickered constantly, the switch was broken so could not be turned off. I reported these issues to reception, they were quick to bring the towels and clean the toilet, but there was nobody to repair the light.
The hotel could do with a bit TLC.

Service at reception was excellent. Misunderstanding with booking was rectified with no problem. Dining room was disorganized. Meals were cold. Poor choice. Staff spent more time in kitchen. Didn't seem anyone was in charge. Went out second night to local hotel for meal and was exceptional. Hotel was busy with 3 coaches the second night. Noise from other residents in next room was unexcusable as between 10pm-12pm. On a recuperation break and just wanted peace and relaxation.

This hotel has a lot of potential. We were raced through our evening meal with hardly a gap between courses. The main meal was venison casserole which was delicious but it was served with overcooked frozen brussel sprouts and frozen peas and sweetcorn mixed which lowered the quality of the meal. The rest of the meal was ok. Some of the staff in the dining room were less than communicative. I love the hotels ambience and it could be excellent.

Basic hotel.

Hotel fixtures and fittings overall we're dated. Carpet after the first floor are thread bare and grubby. Lift very slow. Room clean with tea and coffee making facilities and TV. Hand and bath towel each but not bath sheet size. Food mediocre. Good choice at breakfast but on the cold side.
Disappointed with the bar as there was no cucumber or lemon for my gin. I supplied my own 😜

Old school stately charm, the staff make an effort to provide a luxurious experience in this historically grand hotel. Great to have a bathtub, bathrooms have been renovated. Treats and coffee/tea provided in the room. Friendly and cozy pub for visitors and locals with full menu available. Grand, formal dining room and halls for guests. Typical Scottish decor, plaid carpets with random sections of scenic wallpaper amid beautiful old woodworking.

Lovely weekend in Kingussie

The hotel is in a great location.
We got our room at a great price, it was very spacious and had a lovely bathroom.
The breakfast buffet was good however the cooked options for vegetarians were limited with us only finding out that you needed to order vegetarian sausages the day prior.
There was entertainment somewhere evenings which is good to cater for everyone

This is a hotel of faded Highland splendour - but we are quite happy in such hotels. The staff are good and try to help and the room was quiet and comfortable. The shame is that the food caters to the lowest common denominator - coach parties. The choice for dinner was remarkably small and the food was average. The breakfast was not hot and the food in heated containers should have been replenished. The bacon was a welded mat of rashers - inedible. The hotel served our purpose but needs attention.

Upon arriving we were met with a very nice lady and checked in with no issue. While the hotel is quite old and could use a good carpet cleaning, the bathroom in the room seemed to have been recently remodeled and was great. While this is a hotel they do have a ballroom for great live music and dancing which goes until midnight. Unfortunately we stayed right above this said music and found it hard to sleep during these times. Breakfast was average for the price but dinner was much better. The bar seemes to always be busy and rushed but they had great employees and drinks. This property is in a nice area with great walkable paths and stores all around. Finding food other than the hotel nearby was quite difficult and the lady at the front desk was no help with our questions. Parking is available in the front and back lot.

Staff were welcoming, but the room was tired. Poorly hung old curtains, thin mattress and pillows. Bed was not comfortable. Wallpaper coming off the wall and water stains on the ceiling. Bathroom was renovated, but the room was not. White towels were old, thin and greyish in colour.
Went to breakfast. No tables were set. Had to ask a number of times for plates and mild for the cereal. Many of the breakfast choices, e.g., scrambled egg had run-out and nobody was replenishing them. Staff seemed to be stressed and not providing good service.
Evening entertainer (Scottish singer) in the ballroom was excellent.

I bet this hotel was really grand in its heyday. Now it is a very run-down hotel with creaky floors, tattered carpets, saggy mattresses, broken chairs and no water pressure in the shower. The bathroom floor seemed like it would collapse at any moment. No shampoo or soap in the shower. The cost was way too high for the condition of the room. They offer a 4-course dinner for $25 which was good. The service staff were nice. This hotel really needs an overhaul but they stay busy with bus tours of senior citizens. Not sure when the exterior picture was taken as the hotel and garden looks nothing like that picture.

Lovely, traditional, but tired

We had a lovely stay at the Duke of Gordon. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, it is clear that the hotel is important to both its community and many returning guests. A wonderful location for exploring the Cairngorms and visiting the Highland Wildlife Park

Time hasn't been a great friend however: The building was in need of upgrades in both the public areas and the bedrooms. And at times service fell beyond the level expected. It did not feel that the hotel was well managed.

We may well return in the future and very much hope to see much needed improvements to this grand old hotel.

Starter and main course arrived together but it didn’t matter as there were only 3 pieces of whitebait so £2.50 per piece Bar man on first night told us they didn’t sell a spirit that in the next night they clearly did and he needed to wash his hair.

The hotel has ample parking is is really grand inside- it even has a ballroom!
Our room was very large and very well appointed. Not all floors are serviced by the single lift and this could be a problem if you have any mobility issues.
There is a bar on-site, which serves great food and is lovely for a drink after a busy day of activity.
The breakfast was not tasty- food was served in heaters- which meant that some food was dry because it was sat in the heaters for ages or floating around in so much grease it was not appetising.

I have stayed here twice in the last two months.
The newer rooms over the ballroom are smaller and thinner walls and noisier.
Luckily we were able to move rooms for the last two nights.
Breakfast is ok, but needs more options.

Friendly staff. Tired environment

Staff were very friendly and efficient in all areas. However the hotel had overall a tired feel and decor. The room had a broken mirror and the plug in the bath was blocked. The room needs upgrading. These were reported.

Not somewhere I’d choose again

The hotel is in a good location. We had two rooms, one was nicely decorated and felt quite modern, the other seems very tired and in need of an update. The hotel itself was quite dated but was nice and clean.

The only complaint we have was were checked in by possibly the grumpiest receptionist I’ve ever encountered. There was an elderly gentleman waiting at the desk when we arrived who was clearly confused and didn’t remember his room number, the receptionist couldn’t of been less interested and gave him minimal help, when we came back downstairs 20 mins later he was still wandering around looking very confused. Given the hotel seemed to have a mainly older client base I would of expected staff to be a bit more compassionate and helpful towards a confused elderly gentleman.

Old fashioned hotel, but great for our purposes (cycle trip). Good value stay and great value evening meal. Enjoyed the beer too. Difficult to get luggage up to 3rd floor room (no lift) and shower in room was extremely hot and not that adjustable. Otherwise a fine and enjoyable stay!

Couples highland break

Just spent a few days at the Duke of Gordon Hotel - it was a great base from which we explored the whole of Scotland. The staff were welcoming and the service was excellent. The breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice. There was a good selection of food on the bar menu in the evening. This is definitely a hotel we would use again. Kingussie is a quiet town much more relaxing than the busyness of Avimore.

Good stay, tarnished by bar incident

Overall, a good stay, reasonably priced. Comfortable room good cooked breakfast but could have wider selection of cereals.

One incident that had a negative impact - a couple of \"locals\" came into bar (already drunk) and were very offensive towards some customers - bar staff should have ejected them immediately but just let them carry on, and gave them more drink - totally unacceptable!! We left the bar earlier than intended, and it appeared that other guests did too. 2 idiots lost you business that night - bar staff seemed to know them, nevertheless they should have been kicked out.

Reception wasn't friendly. No information provided about check out, breakfast times or location. Advised lift wento to 3rd floor, it did not. No fan in room and it was like a sauna. Dirty bathroom. Disappointing saved by bar banter

Very poor welcome at reception. No information offered about times for breakfast or where. At check out again poor service at reception barely even acknowledged we were there.

Room unfortunately did not have lift access, having said that room was clean and comfortable if a little noisy as located above ballroom and there was a wedding on.

Breakfast hot and cold buffet was adequate.

Bar staff were very friendly.

Great for anyone over 50.

The hotel was situated in a really nice part of town. However, I wouldn’t recommend for younger people. We enjoyed our stay but anything more than one night would be a little unsuitable for anyone under 50. Well situated for local golf courses and walks, though.

The staff were young and really friendly and made us feel very welcome and the 4 course meal was really affordable, but definitely not gourmet.

Overall this place was perfect for a pit stop but not a lengthily stay for anyone under 30 like us.
