The best was the staff and the location/scenery/landscape around it. Green areas maintenance seem to be a high priority in this property, and the views from the apartment were simply amazing. The front desk staff is amazing, same as the maintenance guy who came to change the kettle. All of that would have taken me up to a 5 stars rating. However, the apartment already seen its best years, with the exception of the bathrooms that seem to be renovated not long ago. The water pressure in the showers was really low, the radiators do not distribute heating properly (not a maintenance issue, but simply old buddies that need rest now), the squeaking in the stairs and the second floor is heard anywhere in the first floor, one TV remote sensor in bedroom was not working and could not be fixed (only to be used manually) and some things in the kitchen (i.e., the kettle had green lime scale inside) are making me rating it as a 3 star stay. That said, it was a cozy place to return to after daily outdoor activities.

Accommodation was a bit tired, toilet didn’t flush, found previous guests possessions in one of rooms and pool was closed. Able to use a different pool locally but it was a drive away and had to take towels with us leaving deposit at resort and bring them back again which was a bit of a pain, particularly when we wanted to swim on morning of checkout.

Apartment allocated on arrival in disrepair. Trying to get this sorted out was extremely stressful and we spent 2 hrs trying talking to both MacDonald Resort staff and Hotels.com neither were taking ownership of sorting it out. Hotels.com solution was refund ! So we had travelled to Aviemore what did the expect us to do next !! Resort staff wanted us offered the only one apartment they said available if a lower standard than booked. There answer was to contact the third oarty we booked through - not very helpful ! Also advised on arrival that leisure facilities at site were closed.

Units were upsold and in a tired, sorry state. No satellite TV as advertised, poor lighting around the area. Spa didn't work, place was half empty and no Live entertainment as advertised. Resturant was dispicable with the chef rushing out mains while starters were still being eaten. My family members got food poisoning. Left the next day (was intended to be a 3 day stay). Contacted the Manager who was neither interested nor apologetic and told us to contact Expedia if we wanted a refund!!

Good but it’s showing its age!

Overall for what we paid it was good value for money, staff were excellent but the property is in serious need of upgrades, it’s still very much a 1980s property, clean enough but it’s not as comfortable as it once was, it was better 15+ years ago when I last stayed and it was tired looking then, I paid a fair price when using my £134 key cain rewards but not sure paying full price would’ve been worth it, a serious upgrade and it could get a serious boost, the food was fair but limited with choice, not sure a steakhouse would be a fair description, again a bit more choice and it could be a busier place, it wasn’t busy at all any of the nights we were in, the lack of choice of food on the menu may have a part in that too.

Cleanliness was poor - we booked a dog friendly lodge (at a extra cost) but still don't expect to have mould on the curtains, lots of other dog hair as an extra carpet and on soft furnishings.
Needs a bit of TLC all round and a lick of paint.

Used the pool and sauna which was good, but the jacuzzi was out of use.

Staff that we spoke to were welcoming and helpful but we didn't address cleanliness until we left. They offered a small refund of half of our dog fee.

Property was in a very poor state of repair which was reported to the Reception the following day. Missing cutlery (i.e. only had 1 dinner knife and 3 side plate knives, 2 dinner forks and 2 desert forks). Pillows were lumpy and hard. All the staff would say it would be reported to maintenance tea. The balcony was split and totally unsafe and should have been addressed immediately and it was not/

Not sure what to make of this place

Really not sure what to make of this. The chalet was spacious enough, and well equipped in the kitchen, though some of it was very old. This would have been fine if kept clean, but parts hadnt been cleaned in a very long time. The carpet down the side of the bed was thick with dust, layers of dirt on skirting boards etc. It's clear the cleaners just give it a quick wipe instead of actually scrubbing the place. There were however maintenance people out painting and looking after the grounds.

The pool was odd, the water was cloudy and the bottom was full of sand. It was warm enough for my children though. The changing was poor, only one family changing cubicle.

The restaurant wasn't great. They say they're a steakhouse but only offer 2 steaks, and the sirloin one of us ordered wasn't cooked particularly well. The other food was ok, but not hot enough.

Good points: the staff were all friendly, the playpark is good, the walk along to the town is easy.

Given all of this, we still had a good break.

We have stayed here twice now and I will not be back. It is extremely average but gets away with it because of its location. I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt after the first time.

Just lots of niggly things around service or lack of. This time we arrived to find several bags of laundry and a bag of rubbish on the front door step. Given the issues we had the first stay I thought I would leave it a day or so to see if anyone came to deal with it. They did not and I disposed of the rubbish myself. I was about to raise the laundry with reception when an employee walked by and said she had logged that to get picked up (as usual, zero apology). The afternoon/evening before we left (day 5) was when it got picked up.
The pool was once again very cloudy and had the extra bonus of piles of sand at the bottom in places. The Chalet itself was very dated and had lots of bits deteriorating.

Tired and tatty, but nothing bad

A poor start when they failed to answer any of my emails, but my call was answered.
The lodges, especially on the outside, were tired and a bit tatty, but everything was clean and functional.
Beds were good and pillows were great.
Very well equipped for self-catering and everything we needed for a family of four.
The only irritation was that they allow pets and there was evidence of animal hair on decorative bed throws and cusions, but not enough to bother us.
Parking was right beside lodge and it was a short walk of 200 - 300 metres to the clubhouse pool.
The 'resort' was quiet and always felt safe.
A good location for visiting Landmark and other attractions in Avimore.
The additional space and extra bedroom meant we were very much more comfrtable than staying in a hotel.
There are sever shops and food outles a short walk away, however, the other bars and restaurants are a 25-30 minute walk or 5 minute drive.
We'd definitely stay again.

This centre had everything we needed. Our unit was spacious and cosy. We were so grateful to be able to check-in very early because of the storm. Our granddaughters had great fun in the pool which was very child friendly with lots of inflatable toys for them. It’s a great location to explore Aviemore and the Cairngorms.

Fantastic stay at the Spey valley resort. Really nice location, beautiful pool and great vibes. A great centre to explore Aviemore and the beauty of the Cairngorms

A few disappointing things:

On arrival to the chalet the hoover was left in the middle of the living room floor, when we went to use the oven there was a filthy baking tray covered in fat that I had to scrub before use.

The jacuzzi in the pool was out of action and has been for months… that’s one of the pull factors to stay here so disappointing that it’s not in use.

The chalet was dated with woodwork and doors with dents scratches and lack of paintwork.

On departure whilst on route to reception at 10:14 I received a call from reception in an unwelcoming tone stating that i may need to pay a charge for checking out late not the kind of service you expect for a brand like macdonald.

Location is great.

Facilities are good but the pool was different temperatures in different areas on different days?? It also had loads of sand in the bottom despite there being no obvious sand nearby. The changing rooms aren’t very clean and when using the spinner to dry our swimming stuff when I pulled my daughters swimsuit out there was a bug on it.

Check in: the staff were flustered and there were only 3 people needing served. We arrived on a day it was -6 and yet there was no heating on in the lodge and as you can’t check in prior to 5 pm, it took about 4 hours for the lodge to heat up! There was also mention of having to pay for electricity on the welcome letter but this didn’t apply for us.

If you want a shower, have one at the pool as there’s very little hot water. The hot water tap in our bathroom sink wouldn’t even turn on. There was no hot water at any point in the kitchen so we had to boil a kettle to do dishes.

There’s a lack of home comports that I’d expect such as no hand towels or bath mats provided which is dangerous when you are on holiday with young kids.

Aside from the mould in the lodge etc if the lodges were given an update and modernised and the staff seemed to enjoy their jobs, it would have been a pleasant trip.

Having stayed at both the resort and the hotel in aviemore, we would not return to the resort unfortunately.

Love Aviemore so booked the Spey valley lodges. The lodges are starting to look quite run down, especially the outside with peeling paint. The inside is a little dated but was clean enough. One of the single beds had no bottom sheet on it and a dead spider lying between blanket.Obviously this bed was not made up fresh. Check in is 5pm and checkout was 10am
I find this utterly ridiculous. I did enjoy the onsite restaurant and bar. Staff were nice. I would come again but not at the prices they charge and checking should be earlier.

There's nothing to like about this place. Beds and sofas are filthy and full of animals hair . We spent hours cleaning the rooms. I'm very disappointed. The only thing kids may like is the swimming pool. By the way there is a bar infront of the swimming pool with full wide clear glass. But you're in luck if they let you in. We've been told it is fully booked and to try another day. Customer service is poor. They're not consistent with their information. If you travel with kids try other options this place is not family friendly place.

I like the Spey Valley apartments cause they are spacious for a family with 2 kids. Great location getting into town and lots of food options around.
What can be better: - we payed for 4 people but the apartment was set up for 2 and we needed to ask for extra bedding and towels. The pool is only 25 degrees and it’s too cold for a play. The restaurant can be more encouraging for people to eat and spend time there.

We had a nice stay but the property is extremely dated, the one we stayed in (Spey 15) needs new mattresses and carpets, the pool to cold for children but we were able to use the sister resort for free which was great as we stayed their previously. The electricity is not included in the price!!! Expedia should communicate that. Staff were friendly and helpful it’s just a shame the Macdonalds aren’t updating it. :/

We went to ski in the Cairngorms so the location was perfect only 20min away. The lodge was convenient after hours too as it was on the outskirts of Aviemore with plenty of places to enjoy a drink or dinner and supermarkets to stock up the fridge for breakfasts in our accommodation. The second bedroom was a little small for a second couple but we had plenty of communal space to relax inside. We didn't need the conservatory which i am sure in the summer months would be inviting but a bit chilly in January with snow outside. The staff we encountered were all extremely helpful and the inclusive log delivery service was a unexpected. All in all terrific value and above expectiations.

We stayed for 3 nights as a family of 4 + dog in one of the apartments by the golf course. Location wise it was good as we could walk the dog by the golf course and there were shops and takeaways within 5 mins drive. Inside the room was in good condition and relatively comfortable with a few exceptions 1) not enough plates and glasses for a family of 4 2) shower pressure was bad 3) sofa bed mattress was passed it’s best and uncomfortable 4) beds weren’t clean with human hairs on mattress, pillows and sheets (hotel then provided clean bedding). They have a nice pool and a restaurant but we didn’t get to try it as staffing was low so they couldn’t open. Staff are friendly and helpful when available but we couldn’t get anyone to pickup phone after 9pm. Overall we were happy with our stay but would likely try another b&b or hotel next time we visit to see what else is out there.

I liked where the accommodation was, there is plenty to do and all near by. The accommodation itself is very over priced for a very out dated chalet. There wasn’t a heater in the bedroom where the kids stay in so room was very cold. Carpet is old and stained throughout and chair was wet when we arrived. Bin bags full of the last people’s rubbish was left outside the door and their dirty bedsheets in porch area that hadn’t been taken away before our check in time. Cooking utensils etc were old and stained and felt like u didn’t want to use them because they looked dirty. Only one bath towel was provided for 4 people I heard other people complain to reception that they had no towels for their accommodation either. There was no towels provided for swimming 3 days in a row that we went but they used the same excuse each day that there had been a power cut. When we arrived nobody was in reception I waited about 5 mins before somebody tried to help with my enquires but said he couldn’t it turned out he was the maintenance guy that would explain why when I tried to ring allday the day before arriving nobody answered the phone as there was numerous occasions throughout our stay that reception was unattended. The Jacuzzi was out of service throughout our 4 night stay. They never had any entertainment information and said I would have to go back later or the next day so that they could get some printed off. I would actually ask for a refund if I thought I’d any chance of getting one.

Whole issue with missing bed linen and towels when we arrived, but once that was sorted out we really enjoyed our stay. We were in a 'standard' chalet, so werent expecting too much, but it was clean, had everything we needed and we absolutely loved it. Weather helps as always, but the chalet was warm and cosey when we came back from walks or golf. Great place and we will definitely be back!!!

Great location and although the chalet was dated it was clean, comfortable and well equipped. On paper the Resort has a range of sport/leisure facilities but in practice they are run down and not really available. The pool closed several times during our stay - chlorine, water temperature issues - and the sports hall looked abandoned. Very sad as it could be fantastic, but staff seemed complacent/not bothered about promoting facilities. Would stay for the location but the place needs a good shake up.

This propertybwas in a quiet location and was very comfy obly downside was the pool was closed 2 out of 3 days and thlack of commincation to advise you could use the pool at the hotel waa none. Was not told about the pool closing at 7pm for adult only so when i had a disappointed little boy i they had to question why another child was still in the pool and was told quite clearly they had asked thenm to leave but also added what do you want me to do \"fish them out' x2...this waa very rude!!! The folder in the chalet tells you the swimming is open until 8pm then adult swimming from 8-9pm...all very confusing.

We all absolutely loved it!! I was a little concerned after reading the reviews on here but it exceeded our expectations. Beautiful walks, easy to get too, our room was huge, towels and bedding smelling lovely. Swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam room were perfect. I'll 100% be back

Property was great for value and exactly what we needed as a base for enjoying avimore. There was a couple things needing updating however staff were helpful.
Only thinf is they need you to book a day im advance for awimming and theres no movement with timings which is unfortunate when you have a young family and kids work to their own timetable. It would have been good to have some wiggle room.

The place overall was good for the money but the lodge was a bit outdated and could have been cleaner in the bathroom etc, found dead flies in various parts of the accommodation. The kitchen cupboard vinyl was pealing right off and the smell when we entered was rather fusty.
We found the beds apart from the sofa bed to be really comfortable and the sheets clean.

Our trip was fine, it is a good location. As noted in other reviews the accommodation and the resort is a bit tired and dated and in need of a refresh.
Our apartment was clean and spacious, and the need for a refresh would have not been such an issue if some basic provisions had been in place in the kitchen, such as
A food starter pack of coffee/tea/milk/sugar and perhaps even some bread.
A bread knife and chopping board.
A tea towel.
Without these basic provisions we dwelled more on the need for a refresh more than we would have.

Booked a lodge for three nights. Was very clean and had all we needed. Bathroom is little tired but it did not put us off booking again. Reception staff were nice. Pool was heated which was great. Has a nice bar and restaurant. A short walk about 20mins takes you into Aviemore centre. We enjoyed our stay and will be back again.

When we first arrived it had a really nasty smell, whole place needs modernised, needed a deeper clean as found dog hair which caused my partner to have an allergy attack, nofamily changing rooms in the pool area

Really enjoyable.

Really enjoyed our stay and after reading the other reviews were pleasantly surprised with the resort. The properties are a little dated, but were comfortable and reasonably well equipped. We found a great back route walk into Aviemore, which takes about 20 mins rather than walking along the road. Be careful with the check in being only 17:00-19:00 which is very specific and could cause a problem if you couldn't make those times.

I booked this accommodation for a long weekend with my family. Given Macdonald's great reputation, I was really looking forward to this stay in Aviemore. Unfortunately, the chalet we were allocated wasn't great. Whilst the chalet was very dated, you wouldn't mind if it was clean and in good working order. There were lots of cobwebs, thick dust under the beds and on the windows. The carpets, curtains and blinds were filthy (stained) the doors were bashed, chewed and scratched from dogs that have damaged. The bath surround was stained and falling off from water damage due to the shower curtain being too short for the bath. There weren't enough plates/glasses knives and forks for us all to eat a meal at the same time either, the accommodation could sleep 8 (not comfortably) however but there were only 5 plates.
Clearly when people have been charged for damages, they haven't then replaced or repaired items. I couldn't fault the staff in reception, they were helpful and very cheery but the weekend wasn't cheap and therefore I would have expected a higher standard of accommodation. I would not stay here again in the future and would not recommend.

Cabin is in need of a paint job and upgrade of bathroom.Was clean and bed comfy and had the styff ti cook a meal,if needed.Tv was broken on 1st nt,couldnt get ut fixed till nxt day as no maintenance on site after 5pm.Had to call back on day 2 to get fixed while we were out.No hot water for showers on leaving day.Swimming pool and restaurant looked good but never used.Bar closed at 9pm on Friday.Wasnt great for a 4 star,wont be going back.

Great stay with nice views

Our first trip away with the puppy. 2 storey apartment was very spacious and comfortable with nice views of the cairgorms and the golf course. Excellent river walk for the dog on the doorstep and short walk to village centre. Facilities in the club very good with large sports hall to play multiple sports and pool. All in all a great stay and would definitely return.

Good location, parking and friendly staff. We arrived late at night and it was disappointing not to have any tea or coffee at all but I understand. The Wi-Fi was patchy and didn’t work at all on the morning of our departure and the bed was very soft. The staff were very helpful and the site felt safe.

Had a great stay with my family in one of the cabins. A nice location just a short walk from the main area of Aviemore and a variety of good trails for walking/cycling/running. The cabin had all the facilities I needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Great location and the grounds were well maintained. Food in the restaurant was also to a high standard. What let them down was the cleanliness off the chalet. Glass was all finger marks from previous lodgers and the oven looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months. Spider webs and heavy dust on all lamp shades . I had to was all crockery before I used it as there was food still on most .Bedding and towels to a high quality and cleanliness . A good deep clean would make such a difference .
Lodge was looking a bit tired in need of a face lift . We as a family had a great time as location is perfect fantastic bike route at your door step adventure park a short drive away and some nice eating spots in town . Just a little TLC for the chalets and this review would have been 5 star .

We enjoyed our stay at macdonald spey valley resort. It wae very child friendly. Property was well maintained with nice walks around and play park for children. Swimming, gym & other indoor sports facilities are really good for rainy days. We would love to come back.

Great villa, yes the decor is a little dated but the place is perfect in a relaxed location with lovely views. Access to Aviemore and Inverness easily with stores close by.

Peaceful and relaxing. Public transport available.

We stayed in a chalet. The chalets are the closest to the reception which was ideal for us. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable as the mattress was too hard for us - although some would like this. The chalet was clean and peaceful. Staff were helpful. We took the train up to Aviemore therefore were pleased to find bus stop outside reception with buses to both train station and landmark forest adventure, making location accessible.

Tip for guests: to use the grill or oven you must set the timer first or it doesn’t work.

We stayed in a 2 bed chalet, which was a little run down and in need of some updating but the size and location were great for our family break with our two children. The facilities on site are great, the pool is very clean and lovey!
