Hotel on resort we booked was closed for night so our reservation has been moved to the highlands hotel . We did not recieve any communication or notification regarding this , we arrived 1 hour after check in time to a dark deserted hotel with a note posted on door telling us to to go to highland hotel reception nearby , so this was ever so slightly frustrating and stressful with 3 kids in the dark . Highland hotel had booked us in to 3 adjoining rooms which were lovely and great to have space for our family but communication from the hotel of the change would of been greatly recieved and welcome.

Unhelpful staff. Very expensive food and drinks on site. Breakfast was poor quality in choice and quality. Pastries always undercooked. Toast never actually toasted. Hot food over salted and often burnt.

Underwhelmed and disappointed

Staff were nice enough. Room kidding on it was posh. Poor job hoovering though my daughter made some money on the coins found. Not so happy she was picking up Kirby grips, sharp hair pins, hair bobbles and those things plastic tags from new clothes from our room floor. Great finds for a family room when you have a young child. Some suspect substances on bedroom wall and back of toilet door (green).
No information about what was on in resort. All posters up about cinema times/films more than a week out of date. No info on ice rink. Nothing about the play room next to pool and soft play. No opening times, what they offered. Assumed it was just for toddlers from what we could see through window. Until we noticed a young girl with craft stuff.
Sign at our hotel reception gave pool opening hours but said to ask at pool reception for info on times for slide and eaves. Walked over for the guy at the pool to keep repeating the pool is open now like we had two heads
Then of course we go a different day to discover not only was the slide not open yet but they had no towels.
Pool was freezing, not just a little cold. Spa pool broken, steam room out of order.
Thought there might have been evening entertainment on for kids as it is a family resort...not that we found despite it being the Scottish October holiday.
Whilst breakfast was fine and staff attentive. Having so many stand and watch ready to pounce when you put a bowl down is disconcerting.
Restaurant in our hotel shut.

have stayed here a couple of times over the years, the hotel i getting very tired now, rooms are dated and i was running marathon the next day and was leaving early, asked if i could get something for breakfast (that i paid for for my whole family) but was just told no. it was not a cheap room and was left disappointed.

The property is dated and the pictures do not show a true reflection of what it’s really like. Very bad breakfast, for having a hot plate everything was cold. Mattresses so worn down it was impossible to sleep. Excellent parking but overall a very poor experience that definitely was not value for money. I do not recommend this hotel.

The property is dated and it shows on the outside and in the rooms. The room was spacious enough for a family of for for a couple of nights. Breakfast was of a good standard and the access to the soft play and pool was good, the pool was freezing however so we didnt stay long.

Tired hotel!!!!!

Hotel is very tired. Rooms are ok nothing special not for the price anyway! No glasses at the bar for our pint of beer. No food served in bar downstairs. Toilets in bar are horrible. For the price they charged for a stay there, i wouldnt spend the money again!

The hotel itself was fine - cheap and cheerful - and the staff there were really helpful and even gave us leisure passes despite arriving earlier than check in.
What let the rating down and lets Macdonald hotels down overall was the terrible experience we had at the Italian restaurant despite knowing 2 of our party are gluten intolerant the 2x attempts at bringing inedible stone cold (uncooked/frozen) pizza bases and then expecting to charge the full bill in full view of rest of restaurant.

The Macdonald aviemore hotel needs some updating but generally clean and tidy. The reception staff on the day got the job done but he wasn’t very friendly. We asked for a fan to which we got a two word reply ‘no fans’. My daughter left some belongings in a drawer after we checked out and after contacting the hotel several times we have not had any response about getting them back. The housekeeping staff apparently give the room a thorough clean including the drawers and so therefore should have found the belongings. Despite giving our date of stay and room number they haven’t been in touch. This is disappointing and I would have expected more.

Food kept running out, butter, milk coffee etc from a H and S prospective dangerous practice to be expected to carry hot tea and coffee from buffet to table whilst children walking about.

The part of the resort we stayed in whilst cleanliness couldn’t be faulted is beginning to look a bit tired. The food at the Fish Bar on the first night could have been better. There was no table check. We found the fish a little greasy but lovely chips. The room was clean and comfortable. We had breakfast both mornings and would have liked the cooked food to be a little hotter. For some reason (no explanation given) we were shown to a different part of the hotel for Sunday breakfast albeit others were shown through to where we had been the previous day. The ambiance of the Saturday morning room was far better. Again the cooked food temperature was a little wanting. Overall stay was “okay “

Can’t fault the staff and cleanliness of the hotel and facilities but the hotel itself is very tired externally. Flaking paint etc makes the building look awful and doesn’t give a good first impression for tourists. Other negative point is having to pay an extra £2.50 to get a latte out of the coffee machine at breakfast at time. This is rediculous when many low budget hotels have this included with breakfast.

Travelled with our family for a few nights in Aviemore, we have had a great time exploring the area but the resort really needs a major overhaul.

The hotel is extremely tired and cleanliness is of a very low standard. Public areas and bedrooms need a deep clean and updating. We were booked on a B&B package, the hotel breakfast really isn’t up to much so we used local cafes instead.

The elevator isn’t working and I assume this has been like this for sometime as we were told at check in it’s broken indefinitely.

To give some positive feedback any staff we spoke to were very friendly.

Its a good hotel its just in need of some TLC simple things like replacing mouldy sealant in the shower in fact some sealant would go a long way thag way water wouldnt be running out underneath the screen.
Its coming into warmer weather.an the rooms are absolutely roasting air conditioning is obviously an expensive outlay so even just provide fans in the rooms. Bar choices are a little lacking but a nice atmosphere great for kids but the pool area does need cleaned more you feel like your sticking to the tiles when you leave to get changed after a swim

I arrived the booked hotel, but there were empty. I have been waiting one hour outside the hotel during cold weather. There is no direct contact to the hotel from hotel.com
Finally I found their contact # from their website. They moved my booking to another hotel, Macdonald Highlands Hotel, without any notice to me. They told me because I booked the hotel from 3rd party (Hotels.com) so they can’t contact me. I think it is non sense. I can’t pay £25 for the dinner package, I have to pay the normal price from their menu (because I moved another hotel so I have to changed my plan for dinner).

I think I expected too much from this hotel going by the pictures and the experience I’ve had at other MacDonald hotels I expected a comfortable stay. The hotel was in need of a refurbishment especially the bathroom area. I found the surround of the bath had not been cleaned and found a dead spider on the window sill. I know these are little things but we stayed at this hotel as they offered a Christmas experience so expected my children to stay in a clean bedroom. The hotel room was very cold it was -9 outside I turned the heater to the maximum but it still was only mildly warm to touch. After a couple of visits to reception the agreed to bring up a heater which made a massive difference. Breakfast was okay again my expectations were high especially since it was advertised as a family friendly Christmas weekend break there was hardly anything child friendly for breakfast apart from cereal. I won’t be returning to this hotel I don’t think it represents the MacDonald brand well.

No stars to Hotels.com who send the wrong information about which MacDonald Hotel we were staying in. I was sent details for a hotel which is currently closed at the MacDonald resort. The resort has three hotels, one of which is currently closed for renovation and we wasted some time looking for the correct hotel. The actual hotel, the MacDonald Highlander was very comfortable though in need of some updating. Very tasty buffet breakfast.

Very tired and run down, the hotel looks awful from the outside and isn't much better inside as soon as you walk in the place smells damp and musty, the bar and restaurant are drab, the stairwells and corridors desperately need freshened up as do the carpets and bathrooms in the room. We had a room right next to the stairwell and were constantly woken up through the night by the doors banging. So glad we only had to stay one night definitely won't be back.

Disappointing family break.

We had planned this as a family summer break. Having visited several times before we knew what to expect. However we were unaware the hotel had changed the family ‘dinner bread and breakfast’ deal to seclude main meals for children. Quite bizarre and not something we were clearly aware of from booking info.
Food was ok. Breakfast is as expected with a good choice. The main meals menu however is been stripped back and items have jumped in price meaning the adult allocation of £25 per adult per main meal didn’t stretch far and so it was impossible to even get 2 courses. These changes have meant the hotel is no longer competitive in terms of the other options we consider when booking.
The hotel is a good family venue. It’s in a great location and has great amenities both within the hotel complex and in the local area.
The pool is always a winner with our kids as they love the slide and the wave machine.
The rooms are ok. We’ve never had cause to complain however on this occasion we were directly above back reception in the Aviemore Hotel and sadly this meant we were constantly awakened every time someone slammed a door beneath our room - which was constantly throughout the night. Wherever this door is and whoever needs to use it that often needs to consider the sleeping families above. We did mention this to reception staff but it was laughed off so I doubt it will be resolved.

All in all a rather disappointing stay that means we likely will not return.

We were given a disabled access room without asking. When we arrived in room there was a overpowering smell of perfume. after a few hours we noticed the shower leaked into the main room and there was a terrible smell of damp and mould. This made my pregnant wife fell sick all night. The reception did nothing. Cooked breakfast was nice but fresh fruits had gone bad and also orange juice was off.

Super position in Aviemore, very near the shops and restaurants. The hotel is looking dated now. Breakfast was good. The most annoying things were the heavy, banging hotel doors and the fact that my key card kept failing to work, necessitating many (longish) walks back to reception. The best thing about this hotel are the super helpful staff, particularly reception.

All Amenities closed - poor staff attitude.

Terrible hotel with none of the amenities promised. Swimming pool, bar and restaurant all closed. I had booked a hotel with swimming pool for my 7 year old son who was very disappointed. Had to walk to sister hotel for dinner which was not what we wanted since I had a broken shoulder. Road sign said Retail Shops but nothing open and receptionist couldn't have cared less when I asked. Room was fine apart from getting 2 sets of towels for 3 people. Had dinner at Aspects restaurant but when I asked for Malt Vinegar for my Fish and Chips it apparently caused a problem as they told me they had none and no one had ever asked for it which cannot be true. This is the most traditional British meal you could order!. This info came from the Supervisor who lied and told me he was the Manager.

Kids loved the soft play and all the floats in the pool! Great park too.
Very quick to get to anything in Aviemore.
Would recommend making reservations for food in advance! La Taverna pizza in Aviremore was exceptional!
The hotel is starting to look a little bit tired in some places and could do with a bit of maintenance,but I guess it is to be expected.
Staff were all very friendly.
Rooms could do with a mini fridge to store milk in for the kids bottles.

I’ve stayed here a few times in the past and this visit was very similar. The hotel itself is a bit run down but the room was okay (double with bunk beds). Ours was clean and did the job for the 3 days we were there. The staff were excellent, breakfast was good and plenty to go round. The pool was open with no restrictions and the wave machine kept the kids happy and we even managed a 10 minute sauna and 30 minutes in the gymn.
With half board we booked dinner in the Italian as it had stuff the kids would eat. Overall expensive but an enjoyable time had by all.

Check in took 45 minutes. 1 receptionist and a long queue. Cant check in till 3. Got there at 10 to 4. No welcome sheet available from receptionist (none left) .so we didnt know times of anything. Couldnt get food till 8.30 as half the restaurants were closed. By the time we checked in the shopping centre and cinema were closed. Pool closed half an hour later. So took my son to use the facilities all closed and still had to wait 3 1/2 hours for food. Not only that, it was Saturday and everything bar the pool is closed on sunday so cant even use it the next day. Went for a drink in the bar where food was \" available all day\" turns out no food after 5pm. 2 flavours of crisps behind bar was all the embarrassed barman could offer. No pint glasses. When we did get food the cosy looking italian in the hotel advertising pics were actually not true. More like a staff canteen with some italian flags. Food was a 3 out of 5. A 2 if you take into account the price and portion size. 4 dishes we wanted weren't available but only told when our order was being taken not when we got our menu. £7.50 for a couple of scoops of ice cream, which tasted pretty cheap.
The positives now . Staff friendly, room clean and breakfast was good.
A resort it is not and far away from being one.

Great stay in Aviemore. The pool and softplay were great for my son and staff were excellent. Only downside which would have been handy knowing before booking DBB is that the Spey burger bar and restaurant in our block was closed. This meant the other restaurants needed booked before arrival for family friendly times.

Run down hotel, saved by waiting team

The hotel was in poor condition, room doors were patched and holed, standing lamp fell apart. Spey Bar area toilets were filthy and toilet pans not properly bolted to the floor. What saved the place was the great waiting staff in Aspects on Tuesday night and at breakfast both mornings, really looked after us, particularly the kids.

Amazing Holiday

Had a lovely family holiday, staff were fantastic across the board. Stayed in the Aviemore hotel and particularly impressed with the main housekeeper who helped us to our room. Food was brilliant and ate at both included restaurants each night. Would definitely recommend a trip and already planning our next stay. Pool was brilliant although a little chilly but didn't stop the kids from having great fun.

Great for family but book meals in advance

We stayed as a family on a bed and breakfast basis. the room was excellent as was was the comfort and cleanliness. Facilities for families are great with plenty to do and I would possibly come ack if it were not or the poor availability of food. There are simply not enough places to eat on site forcing people to go into town where it was even worse with everywhere booked. As we were on bed and breakfast we were told we could not book a meal on site as they were only reserved for those who had taken a meal deal on booking... Absolute bonkers you are still getting money from someone staying in your hotel!!!

Perfect stay, we will use again

Aviemore Hotel is one of 3 hotels in the Aviemore Resort. For a family of 3, plus our dog, the room was adequate enough. Room perhaps a little dated, but bathroom was very clean and had clearly been recently refurbed so very happy with that. No bedding or towels changeover due to Covid but we were told that at checkin and told we could ask for anything. We did ask for a change of towels and more toiletries, which was no problem. We were on a dinner bed and breakfast rate, which worked out fantastic as Aviemore didn’t appear to have much choice within walking distance. Sadly the Spey Burger restaurant in our hotel was closed but we made use of the restaurants in the Morlich and Highland sister hotels within the resort, a few minutes walk away. we visited Giovanni’s twice and Aspects once and both were superb. Great choice and superb quality. We had £25 towards our meal and this enabled us to have 3 courses with only drinks to pay for. Service was fantastic and we were accommodated well in both restaurants with our dog. Whilst we didn’t visit we did have use of the pool during our stay, located within the resort. Hotel had day and evening entertainment on for kids and (paid for) activities located on the resort. There was also a fantastic play park for young kids on site. We made use of nature trails accessed directly from the grounds, which was perfect for our dog. Hotel easy walking to town & less than 10mins from many tourist activities, including Loch Morlich

Considering it’s still in the middle of COVID overall was pretty positive. Decent breakfast and pool was good but needs to be booked. We visited during peak season and managed to find somewhere to eat in town ok but advise booking in advance. Room with bunk beds was on the small size compared to similar at the Hilton but was ok. Staff were great during a difficult time for them due to COVID

Great weekend

Great little weekend stay with my family. Only let down was the fact we had booked to stay at the Macdonald aviemore resort and on arrival the place was empty and by chance we bumped in to a member of staff who then had to run to another hotel to find out where we were staying and it turned out we had been changed to the highland hotel. I feel this could have been communicated to us prior to our arrival.

Good location in the heart of Aviemore. Staff were friendly. We had a family room for two nights. Room was clean and spacious, although no lock on the bathroom door. We only had one meal in the hotel, which was breakfast on our last day. Bit of a disaster, as we waited 45min for some fairly uninspiring porridge and a tiny bowl of coco pops. However, the staff were friendly and it’s easy to underestimate the challenges that COVID brings. Outside of the hotel needs a lick of paint and some TLC. Would recommend as a reasonably priced base for exploring the Cairngorms.

Hotel is very tired, mould in the bathroom, toilets by the restaurants are very grim, clean but just look old. It isn't 4 star, not sure it is even 2 star. Its fine if you are skiing but if you are looking for a family break then a premier inn would be better.

2 night stay in a highland’family’ room. It consisted of a double room with a fold out bed in the corner. Nothing at all to make it a family room, not even a fridge in the room. The place is so run down and dated. Tv wasn’t working and when I complained to the lazy uninterested receptionist she said she would contact the maintenance man. Eventually the response was that it was due to the weather! Unbelievable. Food in the restaurants was good despite the awful service, in the Italian we ordered 2 mains and 2 sides and they forgot the sides. Never seen such a disorganised service, young guys running about with no direction and a gormless manager wandering about wiping tables not controlling anything.
I wouldn’t return here, if travelling to aviemore again we would definitely use one of the local places where you’ll get a lot more for your money.

Shabby, going downwhill fast

This hotel has really gone downhill, the rooms and beds are comfortable but it is clearly not being cleaned properly. There was hair in the sink and the shower was blocked with hair. The public areas really need a good clean.Carpets hadn't been hoovered for days by the looks of it and the soft furnishings in the restaurants were stained. Waiting staff were also pretty unkempt and serving breakfast in dirty clothes some of them. Pretty poor, you'd expect more from McDonald and for the price.
