The man at check in wasn’t interested in good customer service just pointed in the general direction of my room then my room was tiny and dated, the pillows where in a pile on the bed stained and with no covers on them. The food was ok but the bar man was rude and when I asked about the way he poured my Guinness he was very rude then continued to slag me off when I sat down to the chef thinking I couldn’t hear him overall awful experience

The staff was friendly and attentive. Our dinner and breakfast was great. The rooms were nice, clean and well appointed. They have a great bar and outdoor seating which was enjoyable. The Highlands folk museum is less than 2 miles. I would definitely recommend McIness Hotel for any stay in the Scottish Highlands.

This stay was a little disappointing compared to other stays we have had (same price point or less) on our current trip across England and Scotland.
Check-in was a little disorganized. Staff were friendly, but seemed a little flustered/confused. Same to be said for the restaurant and dinner. The room was decent and had much that you would need. The shower was a little dirty, there was a handle broken off in the shower, and the plug was broken and laying on the sink. There was a kettle, tea, coffee etc, but only plastic cups to have anything in, which made it a little hard to drink.

The staff that was there was kind and helpful but there just was not enough staff. The rooms are much shabbier and smaller than the pictures. We stayed 4 nights and there was no maid service until we finally said something on day 3. The same dirty pair of socks was in the common hallway the entire stay.

The staff were very friendly and the room was clean. We appreciated the in-room tea making set up and biscuits. On the other hand, the bathroom was particularly small and the mattress was old and uncomfortable. We did not try the breakfast because we thought the price sounded high. Overall the hotel seemed expensive relative to its condition (and compared to our other lodgings in Scotland).

Liked the location of the property and food was good.
We were very disappointed with the broken toilet seat, which clearly frightened the kids and us using the toilet. This was very unsafe to use.

Would have liked if the reception staff was a bit more welcoming and smiley like the catering staff who was friendly and welcoming.

We were allowed to check in early as the room was ready. When i went into the room there was pee all over the toilet seat. I reported it and it was promptly cleaned for us. The travel cot in our room was broken so they sourced a replacement for us. The reception area and stairway carpet were really dirty, why they have chosen a deep pile carpet for the stairs is baffling? The lack of cleanliness put us off eating there so cant comment on the food. The beds are really comfy and the shower was really good. They just need to pay more attention to their cleaning regime.

Our stay was just a quick overnight visit, but we greatly enjoyed the restaurant (and got a high recommendation to do so from a local resident, who said it was the place to eat dinner and he gave us good advice). The location is convenient for activities in the area (hiking, Leault Sheepdogs, jumping off point for Speyside whisky trail).

A country hotel where the focus seems to be on the restaurant and not the rooms. Inconsistent information on Expedia ie no confirmation required and we requested a double but hotel said we hadn’t confirmed and therefore we were in a twin, which they then changed. Rate didn’t include breakfast but this isn’t clear on Expedia. Room showed a lack of care in cleaning regime and inconsistent approach ie great bed and linens but coat hook to operate the shower, badly fitting curtains, hair in draws, non working lights. All over very disappointing and doesn’t live up to their own website.

The hotel is lovely and has everything you need to have an excellent stay. The food was amazing, both dinner and breakfast. The room was large and comfortable. The hosts are still decorating the hotel but what they have done is stunning and high quality. Overall myself and my son had a wonderful stay and would recommend to family and friends.

Excellent location for exploring Cairngorms.

The hotel it's self is small with a friendly atmosphere and attentive staff, the room we were allocated on the first floor rear was clean and tidy with plenty room around the large double bed. We ate three times in the hotel, on the first night we had three course meals, starters were excellent ( Fishcakes & Sweet chilli sauce, Garlic mushrooms) followed by delicious (Steak Pie with veg, & Chicken breast with mushroom sauce with veg), we just managed our sweet, which again was delicious (Eton Mess, Plain Ice cream). For breakfast it was help yourself to various cereals, fresh fruit, tea, coffee & fruit juices, followed by what ever cooked breakfast with toast you wished. Our third meal was the Sunday Carvery, Roast Turkey, Roast Beef, Roast Pork & Roast Ham all cooked to perfection and very tender, with plenty of assorted vegetables to help yourself. The staff were very pleasant and attentive throughout our one night stay. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for excellent value for money cared for by pleasant and helpful staff.

Could be so much better

This hotel has so much potential, the location is good and all the staff we met seemed nice and helpful. Unfortunately the room and some other areas of the hotel are poorly laid out and require some investment. For example, there was a kettle in the room but there was no convenient place to plug it in, we either had to unplug the TV, put the kettle on the floor, or precariously balance it on a chest of drawers and stretch the cable across the room. None of these options are ideal when you have two small children in the room. Neither bedside lamp worked, though these were replace after we complained, we also had problems with the shower, and it was frustrating that in a family room with beds for four there was only one chair, so, nowhere to sit. The public areas of the hotel were also closed between breakfast and 5pm meaning there was nowhere to go to relax when the weather was bad.

The food was acceptable, but there were more niggles like no plates or bowls so no-one could eat the cereals on offer and we just had to eat our other food off napkins on the tables

All of this led to us leaving after just one night rather than staying for the two we had booked. It simply wasn't a place suitable for a family with two small children who wanted a safe and relaxing short break.

We stayed two nights as part of a Highland birdwatching trip. The hotel has recently had a partial upgrade. The staff were pleasant and helpful and gave us a very nice packed brunch when we were going out too early for breakfast. The evening meal we had was pleasant and the beds were very clean and comfortable. However a number of things could do with some improvement. The shower had a very weak flow and the temperature couldn’t be raised much above tepid. The shower controls had lost their chrome trim. There did not seem to be any air extraction in the bathroom which was windowless. The shaving light didn’t work. The password for the WiFi didn’t seem to work but as we were only there two nights we just used our 4G. Nothing could be done about the view from our room over the rear car park but the presence of two large road works vehicles, one of whose lights flashed all night, was puzzling.

The staff were really lovely, they went out of their way to make my stay truly wonderful. Robert and Brian were very friendly and they made sure that things ran well. he hotel is lovely, there are a few alterations that they are working through but this didn't impact on the quality of the accommodation. The hotel is central but quiet. Would highly recommend.

This place will be great by Easter 2018...

We stayed at the McInnes over the long February weekend - two parents, two small boys.

We were shown to a large, lovely family suite on the top floor. Unfortunately the heating was off, and the room was truly freezing. The gent at reception was apologetic and moved us to another room - not as large, but still a family room, ensuite and very warm.

However our bedside light didn't work, the TV didn't work, and the shower was missing a handle, so the only setting was cold water..!

They were again very apologetic - the bedside light had a new lightbulb in a few minutes. The TV unfortunately wouldn't work and the shower couldn't be fixed til the next day. They gave us the wifi password, so at least we could let the boys watch TV online for a bit before bedtime.

The next day, we got up early and went out. When we came back in the late afternoon, we were greeted by the owner, who immediately told us that he had fixed the shower and managed to re-tune the TV. To be fair, they were really quick to respond to our feedback, and it felt really good to know that they had taken us seriously.

When leaving, the owner told us that this was the first time our room had been let out, as they have only had the hotel open for 4 weeks! As new hotel owners, they are doing a great job. The tiny flaws we saw are very understandable. They are enthusiastic and well-intentioned, and I think this hotel will be fabulous by the spring. We will be coming back in summer.

P.S. The beds are so comfy!

The owners were brilliant very helpful and friendly even though they had not been open for long we did not need for anything. We did not have an evening meal but if the breakfast is anything to go by we will book evening meal next time it was delicious. This is obviously a new venture for the owners we wish them every success in the future.

I was a little concerned because there is a bar with food downstairs but I never heard a bit of noise and I was going to sleep rather early. The staff were super friendly as were the other travelers. My first time in the area and I'd go back in a heartbeat (no really, if I didn't have to work, I'd be there now).
The only caveat is that there is no elevator and all the rooms are up flights of stairs. My very tired traveling companion counted 42 stairs to our 2nd floor (3rd floor to Americans) room. If you were expecting to ride up, guess again. If you have trouble with stairs, be sure to ask for a lower floor room.

Loft hatch missing

Quite acceptable hotel with restaurant and small bar. Bathroom was nicely decorated and clean, but the hatch to the loft was just above the bath and the cover was missing. Consequently, we got to listen to the water tank continuously emptying and filling, as well as a horrible screeching noise coming from some of the pipes. It sounded like a small animal was being tortured. We asked for it to be replaced, and were told that this would happen the next time we went out, but it did not. Just make sure you don't get room number 6, if you want a quiet stay.

Would not recommend you stay at the Scots - taken to our room to discover someone else was staying in it, then provided a smaller room that wasn't serviced. No refund of the difference provided, merely an apology by way of a packet of chips and a can of coke. Should have read the previous review of August more closely and not passed it off as a mishap as the same thing happened to them.

Beautiful highland setting but hotel disappoints

Hotel in good situation. Room and en-suite bathroom poorly maintained - we found numerous things wrong - lights not replaced in bathroom, toilet seat not fitted properly, bath side hanging off, curtain in bedroom not hung properly (letting in street light from main road), poorly fitted blind, rug not held down and covering stain. Breakfast food was well cooked but dining room service was only adequate. Reported faults and was told we would be moved to another room - but this didn't happen. Hotel fully booked so I think hotel was complacent.

We booked a room with 2 beds for 2 adults. When we arrived, they put us in a room for 1 adult. We did not fit in the tiny room. We paid for the larger, but we're only offered a free beer. There was a motion sensor on the light at the door that went off all night, for any air breeze, so I got no sleep. The room smelled of mould and the window would not stay open, so we had to stick a hanger to prop it open. We asked for another comforter at 3pm, then again at 6pm, then 9pm, then finally stood in front of them until they brought it out. The great view is of the car park. Horrible experience. Do not go.

Mixed Feelings on 2 night stay.

The one reason for booking (fifteen miles from where we were heading the next day) was that it was the only hotel around that had check in until 23:00. There were hotels closer but their check ins ended at 21:30ish. As we were setting off from Manchester after 16:00 with a suspected 6 hour drive, they wouldn't do. On arrival at Scot House at 22:30 we were greeted with a sign that said last check in 21:00 - GREAT! Luckily the manager had waited. It was also not clear whether breakfast was provided - which it wasn't - not a problem as we were to depart early morning and the 08:30 to 09:30 for breakfast would just not do. This should be made more clear. After the 6 hour drive we used all the teabags. After hiking in the Cairngorms for 11 miles and on arrival back at the room to be surprised that it was as we had left it with the teabags not replenished. Now I am sure if we had asked, teabags would be provided, but should we have to ask? The room was a good size but suffered from having rather creaky floorboards and an even creakier bed. The TV was small and the clock radio provided appeared to be early 80s! The shower head had two settings, 6 close jets that give the experience of being under a hosepipe or a ring of jets round the outside like being in fine drizzle and you have to sway from side to side to get wet. We would have mentioned on check out but as no one was on reception we just left the key. Not a great experience but I would imagine others could have a better one.

Nice place in a convenient location

Last minute getaway to the Cairngorms and booked this place the night before. Quick and convenient. Would be all 4-5 stars, but the kitchen was closed for remodeling, which we weren't aware of. Not a huge problem for us, but a little inconvenient. Would stay here again without hesitation. The host was incredibly helpful and friendly.

Good hotel

It's a well run hotel. The room I was in was well presented, large, comfortable and clean. It was a little worn in places, but not too much. The restaurant and bar are well run and very sociable and there is a lounge with a full sized TV should you wish (the TV in the room was very small, but that's not why I went to the Cairngorms). The location is excellent and you can quickly drive to wherever you want, or walk into the town. I think it is excellent value and I will be staying again.
