Excellent location

All in all, a good hotel. Fantastic location – close to everything. One day we didn’t even use the metro. The hotel is a bit worn and could use a bit of TLC, but if it’s just for a place to sleep, there’s really nothing to complain about.

Room was clean. The tv didn’t have many channels and reception was bad. The cups are too small and didn’t have enough teabags and milk. The reception is closed after 10.30 and the key to get in to the hotel was difficult to turn in the lock.

Déplorable , la pire chose à dire est qu il y avait un énorme trou sur un des sommier, avec des bouts de bois dessus .Comment voulez vous dormir sur ça et proposer ce service a la clientèle ?
Impossible de se plaindre car personne à l accueil la nuit .
Le lendemain , j en informe l employé, qui fait mine de ne pas être au courant.
Il me dit que le problème sera reglé dans 2 heures.
Je reviens en fin de journée pensant que c était réglé.
Je découvre qu ils ont juste rajouté une couette pour combler le trou du sommier.
Bref , à fuir .
Manager ne répond pas .

Positives - low cost accommodation in good location, comfortable bed and seemingly clean linen
Negatives - low cost but still overall poor quality overall, extremely tired and tatty furniture, stained and old decoration, draft from somewhere, bathroom lights not working and not remedied despite reporting, far too many emails sent prior to arrival purporting to offer warm welcome and provide information.

Fine for 1 night

Was very worried about what we were going into due to some reviews but just for somewhere to sleep it isn’t all bad. The rooms could do with being updated as very run down. We had trouble getting in the door and when trying to ring and text the emergency number we got no reply but eventually got in and the pillows were rock solid. The guy who checked us in was polite but was the only person dealing with the building so could probably do with a few more staff

Damp and dirty

We stayed one night as it was close to the station and we had a train early on the morning.

Terrible smell of damp in the shower which was not cleaned properly with hair scattered on the floor, ball of hair in the toilet as well. Found a wad of loo roll under my pillow, looked clean but not sure how it got there, hopefully when they were changing the bed linen, not after the previous guest.

Wonky glass shelves in the bathroom looked like a disaster about to happen, especially one in the shower.

Thick duvets and radiator turned up to tge max, impossible to regulate - it was +10 outside so hardly needed the heating!

Last straw was no hair dryer, as discovered at about 4am, couldn't ask reception for one.

Staff was perfectly polite, however hotels.com spammed me for about a week before the stay with at least 2 emails a day! On the day of stay I received about 6 emails, first saying how excited they were to have me and thanking for my check-in before I had a chance to arrive. Then again, hours before our arrival it already thanked for the stay and hoped it was pleasant. Made me feel like blocking the site email altogether.

As they say, \"you get what you pay for\". The property is very dated, the reception lady was very nice. As the property faces a main road it is very noisy all the time. The biggest issue i have was that i got biten extensively all over my feet and legs while sleeping....over a dozen bites. That is the reason for the poor rating.

Fine hotel, great location

The reviews on google in particular made me pretty scared for my stay here but I found it fine. Everything is old, my room was tiny, most likely a converted bathroom or a study at best but it was what I was expecting based on the listing. I cant speak for all rooms but I found no evidence of bedbugs in room 2 and gathering from my contact with the hotel prior to my stay they have had pest control to remove them from the rooms. The location is really great, as a solo female traveller I never felt unsafe walking along nearby streets at night and its a small walk from multiple underground stations and the British Museum. You will not find luxury at this hotel but it’s not as if they are advertising it as so. I think some reviews are a bit exaggerated or the big problems raised in them (i.e bedbugs) have been rectified. Its a fine hotel for a couple of nights in a good location on a budget, I did enjoy my trip here.

It’s not often we do London so we wanted to do it on a budget. Whilst the hotel is a bit tired it was warm and comfortable. The staff were brilliant and it’s ideally placed to get into the West End on foot very easily.
We were able to drop off our bags before check in as we had theatre tickets booked for afternoon performance.
You get what you pay for. It was fine for one night. Great rates.

Disappointed stay

This is our second stay at The Garth and certainly not the best.
We arrived at 1340 and were told in no uncertain terms check in is at 1400 come back then. Most places we stay if we are early would check if the room was ready and available.
The room we had was down the stairs behind a curtain with a step which is difficult to see and I stumbled down it the first time. The bedroom must have once been the box room and it had been converted. Wallpapering was poor and the sink cracked and no plug.
The bed was comfortable and we had a good night sleep.
The radiator wasn’t working so an electrical heater was in the room with a trip hazard cable to an extension lead with everything plugged in - potential fire hazard.
The shower/toilet was behind the curtain, the shower was hot with plentiful hot water. The room itself is showing signs of wear and needs a good over haul. Outside the shower/toilet there was a strong sewage smell which wasn’t there on check in.
We were disappointed as our previous stay in July was much better

BED BUGS! My partner were here for one night and were covered in bed bugs by 6am in the morning, and left as soon as we could.

There were big stains on the boxspring, the cupboard was borden, the shelf in the bathroom was also broken/slanted so items would just slide right off. You couldn't open the shower door whilst inside the bathroom (it would hit the toilet) so you could only enter the shower by having both the bathroom door and shower door opened.

Upon arrival we were directed to a room in the basement, which you had to pass through an office to reach. The ‘ensuite’ we had was outside of the room and while we were the only ones who were apparently going to use it, the bathroom/bedroom doors were only separated from the office by a small curtain. Upon request we were given a new room with a true ensuite, but it felt weird that the basement room was even an option. The new room was okay. The bathroom facilities felt clean (through the dirty extractor fan has led to ceiling mould issues), and the bed frame and mattress looked fairly new. The location was great for the museum and several tube lines. Wouldn’t spend more than one night here, but the staff were friendly and it was an okay place to rest our heads for one night.

BED BUGS! DON’T STAY HERE!

My three friends and I only stayed at the Garth Hotel for a few hours. As we were going to bed on the first night, bed bugs started crawling all over us and our beds.

The hotel offered us another room for ONE night for only TWO of us! They couldn’t help us find another hotel even though it was almost midnight and they wouldn’t give us a refund even though the room was uninhabitable. Need I say more???!

It’s a great big house with rooms that are rented out, water damage very visible everywhere! And I’m not sure how safe the plugs and extension was right by the head of the bed where you’d normally leave a bottle of water! There is no lift, I was top floor not ideal with a suitcase and no one to help take it up! The receptionist was lovely on check in! Location can’t fault that! I’ve stayed in better kept hostels for cheaper

It done it's job and the staff were friendly but I might try somewhere else next time I'm in London, or ask for a different room that isn't just a long closet.

The hotel has a bed bug infestation. I made two bookings for two consecutive weeks, but after I stayed and got completely covered in bug bites, I asked for a refund for the second booking which was yet to start in a week's time. The reply was that bed bugs are a London problem and that they won't refund it. They don't even want to refund me for the future stay although they admitted they have bed bugs. I am now out of pocket now as I have to pay again for another hotel next week. I should have read the reviews warning about bed bugs but didn't. I hope this review saves the skin and homes of other potential guests who are reading it.

The area was nice. The hotel was dirty. The room looked dirty and not well maintained. Also, had we not been exhausted after a long day, we would have noticed bed bugs crawling on the walls and a large number of eggs right on the wall above our bed. I woke up itching and found multiple large bites on my arms, legs, back and the same on my children’s arms, legs and even on my son’s face. We felt disgusted and checked out that morning even though we were booked in for one more night. The staff apologised and assured us the rooms get checked thoroughly in between guests which was obviously a lie taking into account the large number of eggs present on the wall. The staff also did not bother to approve a refund leaving expedia to deal with it.

The main thing, it was clean, dated but clean.

I wouldn't take too much notice of poor reviews, I was sceptical but for the price and location you really can't argue at the value for money. The decor is dated and needs a refresh but the important thing like the mattress, bed sheets, bathroom were all absolutely fine. I've booked to stay for another night when I'm back in a couple of weeks. Perfect for a couple of nights. Shower was a little weak as others mentioned, but it was more than sufficient to use.

Great location, horrible room

We were given a bedroom in the basement, with a window that can't be opened. You could feel the damp as soon as you entered the room. The lady at Reception was very helpful and gave us a table fan, but that wasn't good enough - at the very least you would need a dehumidifier working in that room 24x7. At the time of doing the booking, nothing indicated that we would get a room with no ventilation at all.
Also, it was announced as an en-suite, which was only partially true - we had a shower room for ourselves, but it was outside the room (i.e. you had to go out of the room to get to the shower room).
Great location close to Tottenham Court Road, though, and very low price.

The location is excellent. We found an amazing grocery store just a block away. Easy access to the metro and seemed like a safe place. Our room was on the top floor with no elevator, so we did lots of stair climbing. Can't beat the family room for the price in London.

2 Days to See a Show

I travel a lot and so it is easy to make unfair comparisons which I try to avoid. Whilst I had no major complaints that spoilt my stay and I did book an economy room so my expectations were basic, here are a few facts:
The room was very cramped-8m square and the bathroom door did not close. A tall person , I' m 5 ft 5 ins would struggle to 'fit in.'
There was paper peeling off the wall in the bathroom which above eye level had not been dusted.
The kettle tea/coffee/milk was stuck behind the TV. Health and Safety.
The curtain was just one when two would have allowed me to let in more light.
Apart from that the management and check in/out staff were effective and efficient.
TV reception very poor.

Bed bug infested

Unfortunately,me and my family have discovered a bed bug infestation discovery on the 4th night of our stay in our room, which has greatly impacted our experience.

Since we had an early group tour the next morning, I only prompted their staff about it at 10 pm. I asked if the staff knew about the issue and she said yes. She told me to wait till she hears back from owner.It wasn't too long before I heard from the staff that the owner will not issue a refund as I have been on my 4th night stay and she will use spray insect while we use the same room as all the other rooms were full. Me and my family should just wait till tomorrow for an exterminator. Although I wasn’t pleased with how owner dealt with the situation and how he managed to send his staff to my room after 30 mins to collect the keys at 11:49 pm. Owner did not seem to care if we find a place to stay for that night. I am upset with thinking that the owner only concerns himself with getting bookings and not actually dealing with customer concerns given how he managed to get someone from his team to pick up the key asap. We stayed until 8 am the next day and checked out asap to do our laundry for the entire morning.

The staff were polite and welcoming, but the room needs a lot of work done to it, I may have got one ofnthe cheaper rooms but that shouldn't mean the room should be clean and/or items broken, the shower was coming away from the wall, wallpaper coming from the walls, no fire escape plan, the noises air extractor, cupboard loosely fitted, window not been cleaned, window latch broken, mould on the shower ceiling and pink around toilet seat.

I stayed this accommodation from last Monday to Wednesday for 2 nights.
I found a bug that I have never seen before. I just killed it.

A week later, I got a lots of skin rashes (literally so many rashes) on my limbs.
It was bed bugs. I wouldn’t say the accommodation is dirty as the staff changes the bedding and towel everyday.
However whole bed frames in this accommodation should be replaced as new one! I guess all the rooms have the bed bugs.
It’s not worth it to stay here. Price isn’t matter for this issue.

Not the worst place I’ve stayed!

Hotel was clean, just very dated, wallpaper falling off the walls and floor boards very uneven! Whole room was on a slant. Bathroom was VERY small, you had to leave the bathroom to be able to open the shower door! Definitely stayed in worse places, very central location! We slept with the window open and we were on the Main Street, not very noisy at all apart from the 2 ambulances that went by.

Frankly speaking, the most attractive point for this hotel is the location. It is very convenient to me to go everywhere in London as it is located in the heart of the city. As the room fee is very competitive comparing with the near hotel, I have no compaint to the overall service. However, I hope the hotel could provide the hair-dryer to the customer in nearly future as it is very basic item for the hotel room. It is very uncomfortable to me without the hair-dryer, it means I could not clean my hair after the long day.

Only as a last resort

Well, first of, the front desk girl took a personal call whilst checking us in. We were staying in a suite, so luckily we had options for beds because the double bed, i'm not even sure the matress had any filling because you were practically lying on the bed boards. The other two single beds were comfy though. The heating was on full blast and could not be turned down. So even in the winter with a window open, and a fan on, it was still super hot. When we came back to the hotel in the evening, the locks were stuck and we were unable to get in. I went to reception and explained the issue to the girl but she replied with \"well i dont know what to do, try again\". After asking her to come up and help, she also struggled with the door. She phoned someone for help and we eventually got in, but then blamed us for double locking the door, but we were given keys for both locks, so why wouldnt we lock both. In the morning, I went to make a cup of tea, only to find there were no spoons. The decor was dated, the wallpaper ripped and the floor boards uneven. I also woke up in the morning with bug bites. The bathroom was so small that you had to open the bathroom door to be able to open the shower door, so unless you dont mind your room mates seeing you naked, it would be an issue.

Good location and good value for central London. However, shower was pitiful, tv volume was stuck so low you could barely hear it. Worst part was I was awoken about 7:30am by what appeared to be a hotel employee and a guest having an argument in the corridor, not great.

Listen, if you’re not going to live in your hotel room during your visit this is the place for you. We came here to sleep, shower and change and spent most of our days exploring. We had a 3 night stay and only on one of the days did we not have hot water. Slight issue but manageable. You’re within walking distance of transport that gets you to all the tourist areas. You’ve got plenty of shopping options. Location wise it was perfect and was a budget friendly option in comparison to other properties in the area. Would recommend if you’re not going to pick at everything your room is not. look at it as the bare necessities when traveling and it’s perfect.

On arrival, I was sent into the basement to find my room, but it wasn't there. On going into the room, it was a bit cold. There was no hot water until the evening. I had to transfer water from the bathroom tap into the kettle with a glass. The light switch was not near the bed. There was quite a bit of noise from the road and also I got woken several times through the night by the noise of next-door room. I found that there was poor TV reception on some stations (such as BBC1) and the remote control would not switch the TV off and volume buttons and some other buttons did not respond. The keys provided would not open the main front door and room key (No.18) was not easy to operate. Otherwise, my morning shower was good with soap and gel provided,.and the three staff I met were very nice.

Bathroom so small you had to open the door to restroom to get out of the shower. Lovely old home, ruined with how they created crappy little rooms.

Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at… no water pressure, no hot water at all one day. Smell of sewerage wafted up through toilet, wifi virtually non existent. Uneven floor, tiny double bed. Management didn’t bother to return emails. Was offered a bucket of hot water when the shower failed. One redeeming feature was location.

The location is near to train station and amenities. The staff are friendly and Sqar the new management was very nice and accommodating. The room are small and old but the price is very affordable, considering its in the city of London. The only thing is the washroom its too small, you cant dress up inside the washroom and
For peole that is plus-sizes the bathroom are too small.

The worst hotel I have ever stayed in

I have stayed in literally thousands of hotels whilst on business and I can say hands down this is the worst. It's like a youth hostel.

1. Bed super uncomfortable and questionable
2. TV had one channel, no remote control and the arial didn't work properly so the picture kept cutting out.
3. Shower luke warm and no more than a trickle at best

When you walk into a room, if the picture below is what you want to be welcomed with then go for it, I suspect many people wouldn't, and to then be charged £145 just added insult to injury.

Book at your peril - hopefully it will be condemned soon.
