Having stayed here 8 years ago and thoroughly lived it, I was a bit apprehensive going back.
I needn't have worried...just as beautiful as before.
The rooms, the pool, the staff, the views...stunning.
Yes, its a little tired in places but that adds to the charm.
The service from every member of staff was top notch, they couldnt do enough for us...there was 9 of us over 5 villas...
Thank you to Payogan for making this stay special

The Good - Great views, quiet, spacious rooms, good breakfast options and a nice pool. Away from the city center which could be a good or bad depending on your preference.

The bad - mixed feelings about the staff. Some were very friendly but difficult to communicate with them in English. We booked a connecting 2 bedroom villa with a pool. We were given a two floors (you have to go outside to access the stairsl with still under construction patio. When we complained we were moved to what we booked on the site - right next door to the other villa!

The Ugly - a live big cockroach in the bathroom, few lizards in the room, blown fuse for all the outlets, just two towels in the bathroom (no hand towels or face towels), only two small bottles of water for brushing and/or drinking. While breakfast was delicious the restaurant menu is pretty bad - don't even bother with the pizza. We ended up getting Grab takeout the next night.

Overall it's a great property but lacks simple things that could make it a 4-5 star property - amenities, good food, and service!

Lights at the pool were all broken. Hotel did not fix it until the last night so I could not swim at night. Overall, my experience was ok. Not going to stay here again for the price that I paid. There are better resort out there.

This was our fourth stay & it was wonderful once again. Staff are excellent, we were welcomed like family. Our villa was beautiful, peaceful & private, with lovely views across the valley to the jungle. Villas are cool & spacious. The grounds at the Payogan are magnificent. The resort isn’t walking distance from central Ubud, but the free shuttle runs on a daily timetable, so we just headed in on the 4pm shuttle for a wander around & dinner in Ubud, then caught the evening shuttle back. Thanks to Wayan for his efforts to ensure we had everything we could possibly need. This is the perfect spot for getting away from the hustle and bustle and relaxing.

Rooms need maintenance flushing toilets, lighting, power points. Rooms weren't refreshed with new drinking glasses etc.
Transport to main centred Ubud expensive to organise if outside free shuttle.

The location is spectacular, as well as pool area and the private terrace with pool. The hotel presents some general maintenance issues, including the room, that would not be expected in a luxury hotel, which in my opinion its not, even with its luscious gardens and views. Good value for the price and breakfast buffet OK. Friendly staff. about 15 minutes from downtown Ubud.

Wayan and the team were wonderful and made our stay amazing, willing to go the extra mile to ensure our stay was perfect. The villas are spacious with sun terrace and private infinity pools overlooking the jungle giving a peaceful feel. The spa offers a broad range of treatments for single and couple sessions which are well worth the money. The grounds are well kept and fit perfectly with the surrounding jungle making you feel you are staying in an ancient palace. The Wi-Fi is fast and free.
All in all i would say this is the best hotel in Ubud and we will definitely stay there again.

Excellent setting with very roomy and private Villa and private pool. Excellent and friendly staffs. Good selection of breakfast. Sunday dinner with traditional dance show is a good and relaxed evening on site. Otherwise, more food selections at Ubud center. Good shuttle services to and from Ubud center. Would suggest the last return shuttle at 10:15pm instead of 8:15pm. Very happy with the stay and highly recommended to others.

Great escape in Ubud

The location of the villa was great, with the shuttle bus going to the center of Ubud! Definitely a great way to explore the location. The room was relatively clean but can get humid if you don't keep the AC on which isn't great for the environment. You get your occasional gecko but we, unfortunately, spotted a large cockroach which was a bit of a downer.

The pool and patio was great for early morning swimming and reading. Great for young travelers looking for a bit of luxe and not too afraid of bugs.

This was an absolute treasure! Villas were absolutely beautiful with a private pool. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. They got us a driver on our first day who we ended up using for the 2 days that we were in Ubud. Absolutely loved our experience and will be back!

The hotel was so gorgeous and the location was beautiful. The staff was friendly and never felt understaffed. The breakfast was delicious every morning. The only downfall was that bathroom had termites and wood/dirt everywhere. We had to have them clean it on the first day.

Nice hotel but too far away from ubud centre

Very nice scenic hotel. It is far from the action of Ubud centre though. They did a shuttle bus several times a day to and from the hotel, this easily takes 20 minutes and the times are not ideal. For instance there is no lunchtime drop off, it's either 10am and then 2pm. last shuttle back is 20.30 far too early in my opinion. Out of these times there seems to be a racket with the local taxi drivers who won't take you back to the hotel unless you pay through the nose.
Breakfast buffet was poor considering the cost and star rating of the hotel. 2 bed villa with pool was amazing. Furniture was really annoying, they have wooden bits strutting out from the legs. On multiple occasions the whole family smacked their ankles on these and although no cuts was really painful!
Main plus points, rooms, view, swimming pool. Negatives, gym still shut (was offered one out of hotel for free), far from centre, annoying furniture, wierd shuttle times. Ubud is becoming too touristy and prices are becoming outrageous in some instances. Think Melbourne, London prices.

Great location for anyone who wants to get away from the big city’s to relax, rejuvenate and chill out.
Food and drink prices are quite expensive.
Ubud town centre is within 5 km (not walkable) however the Payogan has scooter rental that is well priced.
Overall I was very pleased with my stay there and am definitely planning to return in the future.

We had a lovely stay at the Payogan. All of the staff were friendly and attentive to our needs. We enjoyed the privacy of our room, and breakfast offered a nice assortment of food options. The setting is very peaceful. We would love to stay here again.

Amazing spot in the world

From the minute we arrived the staff impressed us. The grounds are amazing and the staff is too. Far exceeded our expectations in every way. The Villas are original and spectacular. All of our requests were taken care of and being with 2 small children we had a few. Can't wait to return and bring friends. We also found out they have 2 and 3 bedroom villas with private pool. The photos are very accurate and the breakfast was amazing with Western,European and Indonesian choices.

Amazing view hotel ans helpful staff

I have nothing to say about the staff appart that they are so helpful. One of the staff member got us tickets for the fast boat to gili with discount price without asking anything in return. The room was nice and our private pool was big with the amazing view on the valley. The food at the restaurant was a bit disappointed especially the breakfast and the awful frozen pizza. Just stick to chicken or Indonesian speciality .
Overall I already told few of my friends who are planning to visit ubud to definetely check out this hotel.

Beautiful Villa with pool .

Our villa was amazing. We had two pools. A deep one as a shallow one. The gardens and whole area around the resort was beautifully maintained . It was quiet and peaceful. The staff were very helpful. I stayed for 11 days and loved it. They provide a free shuttle into tour and there is many cafes, shop etc to choose. The buffet breakfast was great every morning.
I would definitely stay here again and recommend this hotel. So beautiful.

The Bad: the bed pillow cases weren't clean we had them replaced 4 times, the bed sheets had crumbs on it, in our original room was a mess with a no working AC. The pool was filthy and not properly cleaned. breakfast on day 2 was old and not fresh

The Good: a great view, a lot of privacy in the villa, transport to the lobby via golf cart. When the breakfast is fresh it's delicious. Tea time is amazing. great coffee and mango juice.

Elegant and quiet with the bonus of your own pool!

What a fantastic find. Peaceful and private with your own pool or a beautiful communal pool if you wish. Staff were fantastic and nothing a problem.
Only concern was the moss on steps making them slightly dangerous. Built onto a hillside. Everything in on levels, but if you don't want to walk and climb steps they collect you in their buggy. They also run shuttles into Ubud several times a day and evening.
Would definitely return.

The hotel has great premises-rooms are huge and comfortable, the private pool is great. The view from private villas top everything up. However the service was very low; it was slow, employees barely spoke English, room cleaning constantly kept \"not seeing\" dirty glasses. There was only one good receptionist which was very helpful. The furniture in the room could use updates, as our dining table was crooked to one side; the extra bed had dust on rails.

However, I would recommend this hotel to those, who prefer amazing views at a reasonable price!

Top Class Resort, great staff!

We had two nights at the Payogan Resort and Spa in Ubud. The resort is truly beautiful, breathtaking scenery and gardens - our villa was very private - with our own pool. The villa was well equipped with everything we needed. The staff were extremely attentative and helpful and easy to understand! The hotel runs a free shuttle to and from the town centre every two hours - which we used each day. We dined in the restaurant one evening, food was top class. Breakfast was included in our stay and it was also delicious with plenty to choose from. The villas are a long walk from the hotel reception and because of this the hotel happily provides a buggy service to and from reception - just a call and the buggy was there immediately to collect us. The hotel arranged a sunrise trek up to the volcano at a very good price. We were quoted varying costs for this - but the hotel was the easiest and cheapest - and the trek was professionally run etc. Would definitely recommend a stay here, and I will be staying again, should I visit Ubud.

Gorgeous & luxurious setting 20 minutes from Ubud

Payogan was a very beautiful hotel! The room was very comfortable and had a lovely pool and deck. The grounds of the resort are beautiful, especially the main pool, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The spa was also great, and the food quite good! To note, wifi only works in the resort lobby. We enjoyed the honeymoon package and loved every minute!

This place is wonderful and I've been to Bali over 30 times. Staff are great, the buggy rides to lobby and room are fun. The Valley views are awesome and our own pool was incredible. The beds were comfortable, too! You can easily travel around the island from this central location. A great experience for the Bali traveller.

Loads of room at the Payogan and it's incredibly peaceful. The villas are huge and the pool's lovely. The food isn't great however and it's a good 20 min cab into town as the hotel is in a fairly remote spot. There's a free shuttle which is useful. Drink it expensive so you're better off bringing in your own and going to the town for dinner. Still it's pretty and the staff are helpful.

It's a little dead

The Payogan has all the bones of what would make a great resort. There just wasn't enough happening to make it feel alive.
The main pool which is the central focal point was hardly used, and the villa that we stayed in had rooms which were very dark and felt like a cave. It was a beautiful location which felt like a ghost town, despite being fully booked at the time.

Peaceful retreat just out of town

A great place to stay, tranquil setting blends in with the surrounding forest and stream. A 7 minute free return shuttle ride away from Ubud town where you'll be spoilt for choice for places to eat catering to all tastes. Very private villas, some with their own pool. A classy romantic retreat, highly recommended. Recommend going to town for dinner instead of at the resort.

Good Hotel, but not exactly 4.5 Star...

I chose The Payogan Villa Resort & Spa solely based on the pictures from the website. However, when my wife and I arrived to our room, it was not as good as how pictures portrayed.

We reserved a room with private pool. The room turned out to be a villa and it was very spacious. It had great views and illumination was very pleasant. However, as I previously mentioned, it looked older than how pictures portrayed, that's including some of the room amenities. It was supported by only one small A/C, which wasn't capable of cooling the entire villa. The shower and bath area was exposed to outside, so it was a bit awkward for us... The resort was away from 10-15 minutes away from restaurants. Nothing was available within walking distance. Lobby wasn't exactly 4.5 Star as well... it was staffed by only one person with old systems. It seemed like they operated primarily on walkie-talkies and phone. Wi-Fi was only available in lobby. Breakfast buffet was not a top quality as well..

Best hotel in Ubud

The first villa we saw was not exactly to our liking but the staff worked with us and was very accommodating to our needs. They then showed us a 2bdrm villa with private pool that we fell in love with immediately. It was everything we wanted and more. The meals were very delicious with the option of room service for no additional cost. The hotel grounds were well kept and beautiful. The spa services were also amazing. All staff was very nice. Will definitely stay here again.

Stunning! Rainforest retreat. Breakfast average. Service excellent. Rooms and villas absolutely gorgeous, clean, quiet and private. Pools amazing. This is probably the most awesome place I have ever stayed! We woke up and did yoga on our own private balcony overlooking the jungle!!! Our balcony and private infinity pool was complete private and magnificent! The staff were endearingly nice and grounds immaculate. The free breakfast was also wonderful!

Also told that Wifi is only in public areas not in villas, but it worked in our villa anyway. Really annoying as thats the main reason we booked, as plenty of choice at this price point.

Quiet paradise

I stayed for 3 nights with my brother and sister. We loved how peaceful the hotel was. It's about 7min drive into the city center, but they provide free shuttle in/out town every 2 hours. Amazing views of the jungle ravine. The villas are beautiful and extremely clean. The hotel property is large and has very nicely manicured gardens throughout. The main pool area and restaurant has beautiful view to enjoy while you eat your breakfast. And the complimentary breakfast was the best I've had yet in Indonesia. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. It was an absolute oasis away from some of the craziness of the main cities. I really don't have any complaints. I would definitely come back!!

The staff was amazing! Such friendly, helpful and generally nice people. We stayed in the 1bed pool villa which was amazing. The villa was a good size with a view of the amazing greenery Ubud has to offer. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the private infinity pool amazing! What I didn't like about the hotel was the wi-fi which they switch off in the evening so you really only have wifi from morning until late afternoon. Also the breakfast was below average and lastly the hotel is a bit of a distance from the centre of Ubud (about 15 - 20min drive) so we had to call a cab or use the hotel shuttle everyday. Overall a great hotel though.

I had a great stay at Payogan recently(Dec 28th to 30th 2015). The staff here is commendable and I was swept away by their hospitality. They make every possible effort to make your stay pleasant. I stayed in a Private Pool Villa (Room 406) and the view was breathtaking. The pool is very large and overlooking the valley. I totally loved the peace and tranquility in this place and regret not staying longer.

This place is paradise. Splurge the extra money and get one of the rooms with the en-suite pool. There's no better feeling than waking up and having your morning coffee while feet are dangling in the pool overlooking the beautiful mountains in your back yard. The personnel here is amazing, from the restaurant to the front desk to the management and housekeeping. One peculiar person I want to say thanks to is Didi our bell boy who would always give us a huge good morning smile and try to make conversation to make us feel welcome. One quick thing overall to keep in mind about the Ubud area and Bali as a whole is that although english is spoken everywhere there is still a language barrier, not everyone is fluent so at times communication can become an issue. Other than that enjoy what this beautiful island has and stay at the paradise of the Payogang hotel

Not worth the value

We stayed three nights at payogan. We were being offered to upgrade to pool villa at $50 per night at the check in. We were hesitating and in the end the girl gave us discount $50 for three nights. The swimming pool looks dirty and the bed sheet wasn't change throughout our stay I got bed big bite. The location is far from Ubud centre and the shuttle bus service is limited. We rented scooter from the hotel for 80,000 rupiah which is twice more expensive than outside. The only plus point is the staff are friendly.

My husband and I stayed there for 5 nights and it was one of the most serene places we've ever stayed at. We had one of the newer rooms with a pool facing the villa. The resort was exactly like how we imagined - quiet, beautiful, and out of the ordinary. The staff were very nice. There's a free shuttle that brought us to Ubud (however, it's not so frequent so you will have to time yourself). There's complimentary afternoon tea everyday with Balinese cakes which was nice. Room service last call was until only 10pm. Only issue was that there were little lizards in our room which we were not very used to, but ended up only seeing them first night.

We stayed here at the beginning of our Bali adventure, and it was perfect. Private pool overlooking the valley, outdoor shower and bath were so relaxing. We had treatments in the spa and they were amongst the best I have had!
Food was good, but nothing to rave about.
I would have no qualms of returning or encouraging others to do the same!

Quiet and relaxing stay

Stayed there for 2 nights, most of the time the wifi was not working, only working the last couple hours before I left. That gave me bit inconvenience but it was still ok because I could go to the centre and used the wifi. The most irritating thing was the AC in the bedroom was not working. The AC wa super noisy in the first night and I didn't sleep at all. I talked to the staff the next day and she said she would send someone to look after. Eventually she said the technician was not able to fix it and she could change the room for me. I told her since I only stayed for another night and I didn't want to move again. But I made the wrong decision. When I went back to the room I found the AC in the bedroom was shut off. It was very late and I was so tired and bit drunk and I decided to sleep in the couch in the living room.
I talked to the girl who spoke with me the night before. I said if I knew the AC was shut off I would have changed the room instead. Long story short, I think it's all about the language barrier and miscommunication. I still recommend this hotel to my friends anyway.

A beautiful hotel with an excellent value!

The Payogan is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever seen or stayed at, with a great location outside busy Ubud. The staff very friendly and accommodating. The villa with pool outstanding in size and comfort, with a great view. The pool area is gorgeous, as is all the hotel. Very minor maintenance issues and a good buffet breakfast, although food at the restaurant is just OK (we had lunch and dinner one time during our stay). A short 10 minute taxi ride or bus shuttle to downtown Ubud. A great, wonderful option when in that incredible place.

First night: No hot water, toilet not flushing, bloodstains on bedsheets, stained towel.
They replaced the sheets and towel immediately, couldn't fix hot water & flushing problem.
2nd day: Flushing problem fixed, hot water not.Offered us a different room, but we declined as the view wasn't as good.
They offered us a free dinner and spa treatment for 2 people as compensation, which we accepted.

Love love loved it!!

We stayed at the Payogan for the last 3 nights of our bali trip and we were absolutely blown away by it. It was incredible! The villa was amazing, the restaurant food was also very nice, the staff were super friendly and welcoming. After staying here we would highly recommend it and we will definitely be back again! It was my favourite part of the trip! If you are looking for somewhere romatic, relaxing & quiet this place is perfect!

One night escape

Our 1 night stay in this beautiful Resort was far too short. Gardens were beautiful and accommodation clean and comfortable. Staff were courteous,friendly but at times slow to answer the phone. Did expect more variety at breakfast but how much can you eat! Very beautiful and peaceful.

15yr old resort designed to look like 150 years!

This is a trip to the Indiana Jones' era. The feel is ancient, pura-like with concrete and buildings and layout made to look most Bali and rustic-like.

We booked a 2 bedroom unit private villa. Good for 2 families. Nice bathroom downstairs but upstairs bathroom needed to be modified so that the shower could reach the holder. We did not expect these imperfections from a 5 star resort. The result was that for our first night, we had to hold on to the shower hose to have a bath. Ended up we all went to the downstairs unit for a nicer experience.

It took a referral to the front desk manager Ms Putu to sort it out properly. She was excellent in her service and demeanour! Other staff seems more interested in placating and politely asking if the stay was ok rather than actually attending to the problems. So if there are any issues, do check with the front desk directly rather than other junior staff/porter/driver etc.

Internet is slow and not reliable in the rooms but acceptable in the main dining and lobby.

All in all for the price that we paid, this was a good stay with friendly and accommodating staff. The resort needed a good revamp though to relive its glory days.

Finally the pot holes on the side road leading to the resort should be attended to. It may be on public grounds but the impression to Payogan is clearly marred by the lack of maintenance there.

A wonderful hotel

This is an amazing place. The rooms are huge. The bathrooms have a very large tub and separate shower.

The private pool for use just for your own room was fantastic and clean. Grounds were well kept and beautiful. Employees were well trained and very polite. It was a great stay. Breakfast buffet was huge and tasted great.

Needs internet in the rooms!

Amazing end to our trip!!

I booked this hotel for a surprise for my boyfriend as a early birthday to end our 3 month travelling! The staff were absolutely amazing, nothing was ever a bother to ask. They went above and beyond to make sure we had the best time! We booked a private pool villa with valley views! The view was breathtaking and the privacy of the whole place is perfect! The resort is huge so the buggy is always there at the lobby to take you to your room or you can ring it from your room to pick you up. After all the mixed reviews I can't stress enough that the room we stayed in was brand new. So if you are given one of the older rooms you could always ask to be switched.

Friends wedding in Ubud

Could not fault this hotel/villas at all. Rooms were awesome. Food was really nice and the buffet breakfast was delicious.

The staff were willing to bend over backwards to accommodate us.

There is a free shuttle bus into Ubud centre every couple of hours drop off and pick up. The hotel/villas is about 15 minutes out of the hustle and bustle and provides for a nice quiet stay.

Ubud is pretty close to all the attractions like white water rafting, rice terraces, coffee plantations and the volcano look out.

The hotel put us on to a local driver who acted as out tour guide and we got it for a reasonable price (bartering is essential).

This resort/villa is not for people looking for a place to get wasted every night and run a muck, its all about relaxing. Although that said you can go into Ubud centre for about 60000Rp ($6) and there are a few places to drink in there.

Overall loved it.

Great place to stay

This beautiful rambling hotel is wonderful. It covers several acres of grounds in a wonderful fashion. the staff are extremely helpful and our villa was amazing! private, well appointed and with a generous bathroom, we had our own little oasis within the complex.

The staff helped us with all our needs. The scooter hire was extremely easy, the shuttle system worked well and the buggies around the complex meant we didn't have to lug our luggage up and down steep hills.

Such a nice place....

We have a great time at payogan. Room is big, clean and privacy. Resort have Nice landscaping and great view. we have private swimmingpools. And love the tub. Big enough for 2 persons. Payogan great place to stay if you want romantic stay and quite.

me and my friend stayed at the pool villa the room was in good condition, we stayed at 304. Tho the leaves could have been picked from the pool and they should have provided us with more towels. Wish the pool temp could be adjusted. It was too cold at night.

Serene Family Holiday

From the moment we arrived, Wayan was extremely hospitable and made us feel so welcome. Due to a little mix up with the booking, Wayan and the staff went out of their way to help us out without hesitation.
The room and amenities in our 2 bedroom villa were very clean and exceeded our expectations. The girls loved hopping on the buggy that would drop us off to our front door. The surroundings are absolutely amazing and to top it off, our villa had an outside shower so you could take in the views as you showered in the warm water in privacy.
The staff were so friendly and helpful and would greet us and the children with smiles all day.
I highly recommend a stay at Payogan Villa - you will not be disappointed!
