I loved the atmosphere of this property of being surrounded by nature. The suite was spacious and clean. The staff were very kind and helpful. I think there could be more signs around the property to help visitors find there way around when walking.

First of all embracing the amazing jungle view from the river front villa is amazing, also the room is huge and the breakfast is among the best in Bali island. Amy and Sugara are quite professional and they were able to meet all our requirements in a timely fashion. I found laundry service fee kind of expensive but it would not matter considering all the positive aspects. Its a quite hotel close to ubud market area and other attractions. If i visit the island again, Kupu Kupu Barong would be a great place to stay again.

Absolutely beautiful hotel with a wonderful and caring staff. The staff were always there to help with our luggage, getting a car, or answering any questions we had. The views of the river and mountains were incredible. Breakfast was delicious with many options available, great service from the staff, and amazing views. Overall such a nice experience!

We had a private pool with the river view villa, and it was beautiful. The villa was cleaned, great view, and amazing customer service. The staff are always friendly and will do whatever they can to accommodate your needs. Our water is always stocked, and when we need extra, they bring you extras. On top of that, you have your own dedicated butler that you can easily call by dialing #3 on your villa's phone.

The free breakfast buffet was amazing, especially compared to the free breakfast that these American hotels offer. Personally, Kupu Kupu Barong set the standard for free breakfast at a very high level for me now.

If we go back to Bali, we will definitely stay here again.

We stayed in one of the River View Villas which was lovely. Amazing view and lovely plunge pool. The hotel itself was a little lacking in facilities and a little tired in areas. I was very disappointed that despite it being a L'Occitane hotel, the actual L'Occitane shop had no products available during our stay.

Our stay at kupu kupu barong was beyond amazing. We were stunned at how wonderful our room was (with its own plunge pool) and loved the very friendly staff. We only ate at the restaurant once for dinner which was pretty good, the breakfast buffet had a good variety but f Balinese and “western” food. But the best part of our stay was our butlers Sugi and Sumadi, not to mention the gentlemen I called “everywhere guy” because he was always there when we needed him (I’m so sorry I forgot your name). They were both friendly and attentive. They predicted our requests, offered great tips and went above beyond for our needs. I can’t wait to have an excuse to go back.

The staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough to make you feel welcome. The rooms are beautiful and spotless, but are a bit frayed around the edges due to wear and tear. The breakfasts are superb also. This hotel is built on a slope though so there are many stairs to navigate, although you can get a buggy from your room to reception if required. Dinner and cocktails were great and the tandoori restaurant does a brilliant curry. We booked a private tour around the area with the hotel and it was just brilliant also. The hotel also has a daily shuttle into the centre of Ubud. But really, the staff at the hotel made our holiday very special. Oh and I forgot to mention their complimentary afternoon tea. Perfect.

Wow what an amazing experience. We got the river view villa with a infiniti pool (rm#35) and it was above and beyond our expectations! We cancelled our plans for the day just to stay and enjoy our room! The room even came with a butler (named Tukey) who went above and beyond to make our stay a lovely experience. Whenever we return to Ubud we would definitely want to stay here again.

Start off by saying, I booked a villa for 3 nights and relied on the photos for my booking.
When arriving to the hotel the staff was very nice and friendly. We were taken to our villa and our room didn't quite look like what we booked, we were tired and ended up sleeping. The next morning I contacted the staff about our room and asked why we stayed in a room that we didnt pay for, and they replied with saying that the room we booked wasnt available and we had to contact the hotel before our arrival to make sure we are staying at the room we paid for/ LOL WHATT??? The villa we stayed at was a 50 dollar difference a night then the one we paid for. I ended up asking for a refund and leaving after one night to a different hotel.

Overall, this hotel wasn't for us. Ive never had an issue with booking a hotel and ending up staying at a different room then what we paid for.

my husband and I stay in the #32 villa, it's quiet and nice, the condition is good and we dont think it's old or need any renovation. pool is cold tho so we only went there once for about 10 minutes, so I dont think it's necessary to get a private pool villa because the water is cold and you cant have maximum fun in there. the breakfast is buffett and there's not much selections but the view is nice, you can hear the sound the river. my husband and I took a elevator to get to the downhill and there's a bridge connecting to the other side, we walked around and saw people riverrafting and the hotel is building more villas around the river, very exciting! they also have cows and goats so we got a chance to hold baby goats, so cute! in the last day stay, we have a 2 hours massage in the tree house, thats the best view and service is good and the price is expensive.regarding the shuttle to ubud, I suggest the hotel should extend the service hours, they now only do between 10am and 6pm which is not convinience enough since the ubud area wont be slow down until 9pm, hotel should extend the shutter hours to at least 9 or 10pm. we had to hire a taxi and cost 70K back to the hotel. regarding the dinner at hotel, if you can grab some food outside, then please do, hotel food is too expensive and they are very slow, food is just so so. we found this very close restaurant nearby called Warung Kayana, they open at late night, food is good and price is cheap. I highly recommend you to try.

Pros: The friendliest staff ever!! The best wagyu beef burger of any hotel I’ve ever stayed in (I didn’t go to Bali for burgers but wow). Great service. Butler took care of all of our needs no matter how demanding. Complimentary alcohol and mini bar in our villa were a huge plus. Amazing views of the river. Breakfast was was good.

Cons: Some spots on our villa’s floor felt like they were sinking, some maintenance/upkeep is required to maintain the villas. Swimming pool bed chairs should also be cleaned when housekeeping cleaned the room. Very limited L’occitane products...expected more based on photos seen.

Overall: Amazing experience. Great place for taking photos/bucket list floating breakfast and jungle infinity pool views. Meticulous staff. Real jungle retreat. Very relaxing. Highly recommended!!

I loved the stone and relief art overgrown with green throughout the property. I did get lost my first time exploring as there are many pathways. It wasn’t very obvious where the other two restaurants were, so I ended up at La View when I did opt for hotel dining. This place clearly was created with thought and detail, respecting culture and tradition. It’s ready for a little detail renovation to modernize certain areas like the bathroom. Overall, pleased with my stay. I do wish the shuttle service to/from Ubud ran longer but taxi is always available.

Long on charm but...

This hotel is long on charm but has its inconveniences. It consists of a series of private villas connected by paved pathways. The distances and hilliness are such that transportation is offered via golf cart, but the service is often delayed. Our villa was a two floor affair, with a living room, closet, and a large bath downstairs, and the bedroom upstairs, reached by a tight spiral staircase. Amenities were on the low side; for instance, neither a small fridge nor a microwave was available. There seemed to be a lot of young couples there by themselves, presumably on honeymoon. An hourly shuttlebus was provided into the nearby town (Ubud). The food in the on-site restaurant was good, as was the service, but meals were quite expensive.

This was an indeed an amazing experience. The private villa experience overlooking the jungle was incredible. We had our own private infinity pool which added such a nice element to our stay. The staff was wonderful and the entire resort was beautiful. The spa was also world class and a must try.

Nice Balinese style villas but the rooms were quite old e.g. no sockets for charging devices, poor WiFi signal in room. The food in the hotel was mediocre at best so we took taxis to eat in Ubud. We didn't take the hotel shuttle as the times were quite limited and also required prior booking. Hotel staff are helpful and pleasant but unresponsive via email. Spa is very nice.

What a breathtaking experience from the moment we arrived! We were greeted with frangipani leis and a welcoming smile from all staff members. We were led to our room on a buggy - the place is huge and incredibly lush. The resort is set into the side of a valley with tropical forest plants and cool air all around. We stayed in a deluxe villa which was stunning (we were literally squealing with delight when shown through the room). We can not recommend this place enough! The service from staff elevated the stay to another level - everyone was so attentive yet unobtrusive. Loved it! Complimentary afternoon tea and morning yoga were also enjoyed. Thank you to Kupu Kupu Barong!!!!!!

The hotel and it's staff are nice...but the facilities are slowly deteriorating such as bad shower pressure, squeaky beds, and little broken things.

One thing that was really disappointing was the view, the main lobby has an amazing view, but the majority of the villas views are obstructed by trees.
Also the pool is nice and clean but nothing spectacular as is the room service menu.

My point is if you came to Ubud to relax and be pampered spend another 100dollars and book something nicer. Its not a bad hotel but its not anything spectacular.

Traditional Balinese style with spectacular views

I’ve been wanting to stay at this hotel for many years and my thoughts are mixed after our stay.
It appears we were given the wrong room type and while I appreciated the traditional style of the villa it was frustrating to have a room without a “proper” shower.
The bath was amazing but a pull out wand attached to it doesn’t cut the mustard after a sweaty day river rafting.
There was a cute little outdoor area adjacent to the bathroom that would be the perfect place to instal one.
The food was also disappointing, it was overpriced and poor quality ( soggy supermarket pizza base with tomato puree and cheese) edible but unappealing.
They have a captive audience at night as the last shuttle is too early for dinner so it would be nice to have a lovely meal overlooking the specatular scenery.
The yoga class was a really nice touch and it would have been nice to see the Balinese dancing but the hotel compendium and the handout received at the hotel had conflicting times and we missed it.

We were disappointed since we had read good reviews. It took more than an hour to check in, restaurant service was very poor and the breakfast very limited. They said they will charge us to use the water bottles supplied by the hotel themselves when we went to their restaurant for dinner. I questioned this and then they said that’s ok. We had a very loud family playing on their iPads in the restaurant and they did nothing to remedy this though I politely asked twice

A spectacular setting. ..but it is looking a bit tired as per other reviews...especially quiet and peaceful. ..no real bar and the prices are to be expected. Same music on repeat in the pool area which is annoying. Service is fantastic with the beautiful and happy people . The golf buggy service is a must...the whole resort is extremely hilly with lots of steps so be aware if you have any mobility problems. ..

At first , I think those sounds are made by my another two friends. Obviously, they were sleeping tight in bed. I can’t find out the source of the sounds. Don't rely on shuttle.

Butler service is nice. Rooms were adequate; expected a bit more for the price. They advertise having hourly shuttles, but I felt a bit duped. The shuttle is basically a 7 passenger van. If it's filled up, you have to wait until the next hour. We had to wait a couple of hours to get into town. It's about 15 minutes into town. Pool is in okay condition. Afternoon tea is mediocre.

My gratuitde goes out to all the friendly staff of Kupu Kupu Barong. Without the details of their hospitality, I wouldn’t have complete my task with ease. From check in to check out, we received so many heart warming surprises that I never had other resorts. Well done and thanks Kupu Kupu, I will surely stay in the future.

My wife and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in Bali and chose to stay at Kupu Kupu Barong villas. These looked very good from the photos and reviews. However, in sharp contrast to the resort location and property - the service, food and spa ruined it for us. We stayed at the river view villa, villa #36.

We are vegetarians who love travelling and have travelled extensively to 24 countries. Adding this just for context.

I would highly recommend this hotel because as soon as we arrive to the hotel we were welcomed by friendly staff and taken care of. Despite arriving early before the check in time the staff tired to provide the room as soon as possible and we didn't had to wait long until our butler escort us to our room. He was very friendly and provided all the useful information. All the staff were so friendly and genuine and they connect with the customers and showed that they take care of their customers needs and requirement. In future if i visit Bali again i will definitely stay in this hotel.

The villa was amazing and so private. Being set on a hill you certainly earn your breakfast should you chose to eat in the restaurant. There is always a willing butler around to drive you up the hill on a golf cart. Whilst a little out of Ubud there is a shuttle into town and taxis are cheap. Plenty to do around the area without venturing into the tourist hotspots.

Unique experience in Ubud Bali

My sister and I traveled to Ubud and stayed at the Kupa Kupa for 2 nights. We arranged a transfer with the hotel from the airport, which took over an hour. Our driver was very pleasant, once we were able to find him among the dozens and dozens of drivers with signs at the airport exit. The hotel allowed us to check in early, which was great after traveling. We had a light lunch at the pool bar, took a nap (the weather was not great on our first day) then went for dinner and drinks at the main restaurant. Great experience and the view (before sunset) was stunning. The included breakfast was average at best, which was followed by a day at the pool. We opted for the pool above the Japanese restaurant for this day. Later on, we reserved a spot on the free shuttle into the town of Ubud. Spent 2 hours in town, but when it was time to come back to the resort, another couple missed their pickup appointment, so the van driver shoved 2 additional people in our van for the 15 min ride back. Very uncomfortable, but manageable. Had sushi for dinner followed by a cocktail. Checked out the next morning at 2:30 am, as we left for hike Mount Batur for sunrise. The staff did mess up our checkout process, and we were stopped as we attempted to drive out of the resort. I was escorted back to the lobby to re-settle my bill, which meant having my card swiped again for the error caused by the staff. Granted, it was 2 am.

Great view and kind Staff, quiet & good privacy.

This stay was definitely a positively memorable one for my family. Not only was the location and the view breathtaking, the service and maintenance of the rooms and area were also impressive. All the workers were so kind and very accommodating, truly making me believe that the customers comfort was in their best interest. The food was also amazing and the taxi services were very enjoyable and convenient. Thank you for the good memories!

Beautiful and clean but room layout was a bit inconvenient, i.e.: bathroom in villa is a walk across an outdoor seating area. Hotel services were expensive for the area and compared with other hotels of the same class. Food was OK but not great.

Purchased the river view villa and expected to see the view from my pool however, villa 11 has no view from the pool. I adressed it with management and they offered to change my villa to 27. Overall, great hotel. Staff is amazing. They can improve on the quality of food, the restaurants in the hotel were not up to par.

The location is the best in ubud and probably bali - I've been to bali three times and to numerous hotels in all district and this has the best view hands down. The rooms, however, are dated and towels and sheets are old. The rooms and bathrooms are in desperate need of renovation. The service is not great and breakfast is very simple. Pool was very dated as well. The private pools in the villas are not heated. But they have the best spa I've been to in the world. L'occitane spa is incredible and I would honestly just stay there again for it.

bad food food spoils perfect experience

We stayed at the kupu kupu barong villas for one week. The hotel is situated just outside the small village of ubud itself. On first arrival at the hotel it is nothing more than amazing. The views are incredible and everything you pictured about the area before you arrive. The meet and great with the staff was excellent and all very pleasant and willing to help. The villa we stayed in which was villa number 14 was superb. The view of the river was great You are nicely secluded away so you feel the privacy.

Now to the real issue with the resort. The food at this hotel is terrible!! For a £300 a night experience, 5 star hotel I was expecting to be blown away by the meals. I could have not been further off the mark.

The hotel has one main restaurant - la view and with staying in the villas you have access to an Indonesian and Japanese restaurant at the jungle retreat.

La view was rubbish. The menu never changes, the food delivered is sub par for a 5 star restaurant and just lacks any excitement for the prices you pay

I think the quality of the food is shown at meal times when 95% of the restaurant is empty!!

The Indonesian was better but again the same issues as la view. I can't pass comment on the Japanese as I never experienced the food there but I wouldn't expect much different.

If this hotel invested in some quality chefs it would be a truly amazing place to stay but with the food been so poor it really hinders the experience

Calm, Relaxed, Serene and Very Romantic Place

We stayed at Kupu Kupu Barong for 4 days in the November of 2015.
From the day I first communicated with hotel staff till the day I left, everything was planned perfectly without any hitches.
The staff is very courteous, friendly and always ready to help.
The most striking fact I still remember from the tour is that we met probably 15 different staff members and every one of them would always call us by our names and would chat with us about our plans for the day. It seemed as if the whole staff knew us and our plans by heart.. This gave the word \"hospitality\" a totally different meaning for us and we appreciated it a lot.
About the hotel property, it is situated in the heart of Bali so expect more of culture, greenery and peace rather than beaches and party.
The villas are nicely spread to give you a personalized feeling.
We took a villa near the river thinking that the sound of flowing water at night would be soothing.. It was going as planned until we woke up with loud motor noise next morning!! Alas!! There was water-sports facility on the river!! A little anti-climax but bearable one.
Food in the hotel is very delicious and they granted our requests generously.
We also enjoyed the mango tree spa and a breakfast a Bird's nest which was indeed lovely.
Got a chance to see a weeding at the infinity pool and the way the hotel organized it. We sighed and wished if we could replan our wedding that way.. It was pretty amazing!!
Big thank you to staff.. Would love to come back.

The resort is located on a hill side overlooking a river and surrounded by forest. The buildings are aesthetic and blend in well with the natural surrounding. The service and facilities were excellent. A memorable stay.... It would be worth mentioning a complementary \"happy birthday\" cake sent as a surprise to our room for my wife!
