Our room was sold as a full view of the falls from our balcony, but there was a roof line extended from below our balcony that obstructed the full view of the falls. The room space was a little smaller than expected. The grounds were great, the waterfall was beautiful. Breakfast was good and staff was friendly. The linens (primarily towels and wash cloth) needed to be updated/replaced. The outdoor dining area fell very short of it's potential. Such a beautiful location, but the design and architecture looked like a poorly executed afterthought.

Beautiful Spot, But Room Issues and Poor Response

First the good - this is an absolutely beautiful spot. The food was amazing - we did the special chef's dinner - and breakfast was made-to-order. But, my room left a lot to be desired. The bed was comfortable enough, but the pillows were flat and looked like they were from the 80s. And I had no shower pressure in the morning. When I mentioned by disappointment, they flipped it back on me, saying they would not give me a discount because I hadn't reached out in the moment and let them try to fix it. For $320 a night, I shouldn't have to be calling the inn late at night to get proper pillows, nor calling first thing in the morning to be told I could \"take a shower in another room\" when we were in a hurry to make our breakfast reservation and check out. They offered me a $100 gift card for a return stay. That will not be happening.

The Inn is on a beautiful property that is accessed via a gate protected private road. The waterfall is amazing and very peaceful. It is not your standard hotel as there is no TV or standard amenities, however there is a common area kitchen space with shared refrigeration and appliances.

Unique, beautiful and peaceful place to stay

Loved the sound of the falls. This place is actually a great value compared to other options in this part of the island especially because of the free breakfast and coffee/tra available throughout the day. They offer optional paid activities which are great and unique. Access is thru a very long, single lane road so best to arrive during the day.

The Inn at Kulaniapia Falls is an absolute hidden gem on the Big Island. You have your own waterfall! And you only need to share it with a few other guests! How do you get better than that?

There are a few confusing things about this place which might not be obvious on a third-party booking site, so I'll try to explain here.

1. There are two broad accommodation types here. The Inn, which is an inn, and the cabins. The cabins are located on a farm next to the Inn. You have to turn right, not left, from the road from Hilo to access the farm. This can be confusing at night, since the area is quite dark.
2. The cabins do not have their own plumbing; you will have to use toilets and showers located at the barn (they were squeaky clean). The cabins have solar panels to run lights and charge phones, but for anything higher voltage, you'll need to go to the barn. Oddly, the WiFi was excellent in the cabins.
3. \"Barn\" is a somewhat misleading term. The top floor of the barn is a laid-back lounge/kitchen area. You'll share it with the other guests and with the farm staff. The kitchen was well-equipped and had some basic oils, sauces, and spices for common use. The staff were all very cool and passionate young people. They gave excellent recommendations on things to do in the area. One staffer made us the best cup of coffee we've had in a long time.
4. If you stay at the cabins, you can use the services at the Inn, including booking meals and experiences.

We really liked that they are self-sufficient, they produce their own electricity using the waterfall in the picture. There we can grab bananas from trees, the dining terrace has a nice view of the waterfall and lush vegetation around. We missed (a little) an air conditioning system in the room and it is hard to get there without a rental car. All in all a very pleasant stay.

Friendly staff, will answer posed question but dont offer info. Property has very zen style. Breakfast low key but gorgeousview of waterfall. Walked to and swam in waterfall which is breathtakingly beautiful. Long pretty drive in from town-2 gates you need code for. Lots of electronic commination-sign up for a breakfast time, sign up for housekeeping, check in. etc was a bit much putting us on a schedule when domt want to be on one on vacation but understand its for staffing needs. Cute dog and cat on property who like visiting with guests. Would recommend based on zen setting and waterfall.

The property itself was beautiful. Also the person who greeted us upon arrival was kind and helpful. The General Manager however was not kind and helpful.

When we pulled down the covers of the bed we found at least 10 hairs in the sheets and on the pillowcase. There were also pieces of dirt/grains of sand in the sheets. When we complained someone came up to change the sheets but at that point we were grossed out. We couldn't stay both nights we booked - we could only stay one night due to being grossed out and wondering what else might be dirty in the room.

The next day, when we spoke to the general manager via text, she (or he) was not helpful and was unwilling to admit any wrongdoing. I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone for staying overnight. If you want to stay just go for the outdoor activities and then leave.

The staff were super sweet and helpful, starting when we checked in and got settled - to having an amazing breakfast and checking us out. Everyone was wonderful! I don't usually write a lot of reviews, but I specifically came back to this booking that we had in April of 2022 because I've thought about it so much since that stay. This was possibly the most idyllic setting I've ever had the pleasure of staying at; the grounds around the main property are like a movie set. It was impossibly pretty, and the hiking trail they set up around the multitude of tropical plants they grow there was a lot of fun to walk. We swam in the pool where the waterfall was flowing, but the water was a little too high to try and get up underneath the falls itself. We had a wonderful night's sleep away from the bustle of town; we slept with our windows open and during the night one of the house cats decided it wanted to sleep in the bed with us, so we made a little space for our new friend. If you're looking for a unique experience in Hilo I'd highly recommend this incredible property. We only stayed one night so I can't comment on a lot of the hospitality outside of the excellent breakfast we had, but I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that it would all be equally great.

A truly magical special place like any other. Words can’t describe. So much peace and serenity in this beautiful place. We were worried about spending the amount we did before getting there but honestly now that we have been feel it was priceless. There is a serenade of frogs and insects at night in addition to the raging water sounds of the falls that are way closer than they seen in photos of the property. There is a beautiful peaceful trail down to the falls with hidden benches and views. We even swam in the 50ft deep pool beneath the waterfall! The staff work from the heart in presenting the property and preparing the free breakfast (which is made from ingredients grown on the associated farm). I can’t say enough good things about this special place!

We were blown away by this property - definitely one of the top that we have stayed at with such an amazing ambiance! Lush greenery all the around with birds, fruit trees, and waterfall. We had an awesome view of the waterfall from our room. And loved the sound of it through the night. Everyone can enjoy that view from the breakfast area! This fall was actually better and without crowds than Rainbow fall. The private little serene trail on the property was a great surprise! The kitchen area in our building was also stocked with coffee/tea/muffins etc. we were able to store some leftovers as well as fruit we bought in the fridge. Stayed here for 2 nights but wish we could have stayed here 1 more night. The Hawaii tropical bio reserve and garden is about 25 mins away and was another pleasant surprise that’s a must-visit.

Only thing I can think of as far as improvement is to have vegetarian options for meals - specifically the chef’s dinner. We didn’t do chef’s dinner because the staff was upfront with us about the menu (which we appreciated).

This inn is more a retreat than a hotel. Location take a drive through country road, some one-lane. But once get there, the water fall is beautiful. It is a short hike from the hotel. There are only about 10 guest rooms. Staff are locals and very friendly. Breakfast is included for room stays. I like the home style kitchen where snacks and refrigerator is available. Very comfortable.

Absolutely gorgeous setting. A place you could happily get lost in for the space of a week. Deeply disappointed with breakfast options for a vegan. For this kind of \"retreat\" atmosphere, I would've expected more of a progressive and inclusive approach to dietary variations. Found some staff really aloof - maybe that's just generally part of the vibe but on an island where everyone is just delightful all the time, it didn't feel extremely inviting.
That said, there is no beating the physical environment and ambiance of this place. I'd stay again, definitely.

I truly enjoyed my stay here I stayed in one of the cabins and the hospitality was excellent kinds of sort of attentive even comforting I enjoyed that everyone was worked well together and that it was a healthy environment. The staff were kind considerate and easy to connect and converse with. I live on Maui and I know tourism can be a pain. I didn't feel that with anyone on premises. It was a Lovely stay and I would stay here again.

This is my favorite get away because of the people and the surroundings. The cabin is designed to maximize breeze and comfortable bed. The food is delicious and you can sign up for a farm tour and preparation with the Chef. The Falls are exquisite and guided rappelling is an option. An experience to remember!

Inn at Kulaniapia Falls is a different type of experience in a good way. Staff were very friendly, young, and full of vitality! The cabin was nicely built on a grassy field facing sunrise. Serene place, good for quiet morning prayer. There were goats, named Leche & Waiu that means “milk” in Hawaiian. The cabin didn’t have private bathroom. They have a common area called the Barn, where the baths are, and upstairs where everyone can cook in the kitchen or eat in an open space living room. All guests have their own space in the refrigerator. Be sure to clean up after! The main “lobby” is in a different place in the farm. They have a Lanai you can sit while sip a fresh cup of coffee (on the house. Nice!) overlooking the magnificent water falls. We took a hike around down to the falls and it was awesome! This place was genuinely pleasant place for vacay. They’re rates may come down depending on season. We came on a peak which I think is pretty expensive for a cabin without a bath. For that, I can’t quite give it a perfect 10.

The Inn at Kulaniapia Falls is a truly unique experience. Be aware that there are no restaurants or bars to pop into. That said, the Chefs Table dinner was superb. We chose the wine pairing option and had an excellent dinner on the terrace overlooking the falls. If you're looking for a very peaceful, tranquil jungle setting with light hiking in a natural environment, this is a good place for it.

Off the beaten path!

Stayed just one night at the end of our vacation. Reception was lovely including letting us know how long she was available and who would take her place. Room was great with a \"great room\" across the hall with a computer, some food, coffee, etc. Fabulous breakfast (pre-ordered the night before) on the deck over-looking the falls. Take the opportunity to walk the path to the falls and along the river - quite pretty. This property is quite a bit out of town along single lane roads requiring you to pull off onto grass/mud to accommodate an on-coming vehicle. We opted not to go out that night for that reason. Note there is no option for food or drink should you do the same.

This place is dreamy. You have the option to stay in the bed and breakfast area or stay in the cabins at the farm. We chose the cabin for a more rustic experience. The views are amazing from every location. The staff are so friendly, even the volunteers that work the organic farm. We fell in love with the shared space in the farm house. Shopped at KTA downtown and enjoyed cooking together. Spent the day at the waterfall swimming and kayaking. For a good portion of the day we had the waterfall all to ourselves. It’s such an intimate spot with beauty in every direction. If you are a nature lover you will be so happy to visit. We will be back for sure.

This Inn is set up onto the mountain in a gorgeous setting. We had the Jade Cottage which is its own building with a private lanai. It was very clean and had everything you needed. We loved sitting on the lanai at night with a drink and in the morning with our coffee. There is a hiking trail to the waterfall and through a bamboo forest which was beautiful. Breakfast were personalized breakfast paninis and fresh pineapple that were delicious. The setting of breakfast was on the main house lanai overlooking the waterfall, such a gorgeous view. Overall, if you are using Hilo as a base for adventures to Volcano or elsewhere on the big island, or just want a secluded, restful experience, you must stay here. The staff was also extremely friendly, helpful, and very communicative. Stay here for sure!

Though the grounds surrounding the main house are beautiful, this is not a three-star property, and it would not be as highly rated if it were located anywhere other than next to a large waterfall. The room was very dated, the bathroom was tiny and featured a small shower stall with a plastic shower curtain, and there was no TV or mini fridge in the room. This particularly presents a problem given that the nearest restaurant is more than 15 minutes away. Similar to a dorm, the guests' last names are displayed on the doors, there is a sign advising you to remove your shoes, and you can hear all activity happening in the other rooms.

What is most disappointing about this property is that it does not in fact offer many of the amenities that are advertised on various travel sites. What is advertised as a pool is actually a pond at the bottom of the waterfall, and there is no room service, porter/bellhop, or gift shop/newsstand. Perhaps most concerning, while the staff put on masks upon my arrival at the checkin counter, the woman who gave me the tour of the house asked me if she could remove her mask within minutes, and none of the staff or guests were wearing masks inside the house. This would appear to conflict with the fact that neither the advertised breakfast nor housekeeping are currently being offered, ostensibly because of COVID. What an incredible experience always!!

The Inn at Kulaniapia Falls is a priceless gem and a beautiful place to stay. The property is well off the grid, beautiful grounds, and an incredible waterfall. What else could you want? I’ve stayed here a couple of times before, and will ONLY STAY HERE when in Hilo! The staff make you feel like family, so helpful and accommodating, and with nature surrounding you, the true beauty of Hilo is here.

We will start with the good:
Dinner. Nathan did a great job. Food was good and his presentation was entertaining.
The setting: the falls are wonderful. A solid Hawaii waterfall setting
Staff: nice folks who did what they could to make your stay nice for the most part

Now the rest:
Dinner though good, it was definitely overpriced. And not just by a little.
Room: The room was average at best. I was amazed to show up and see that some rooms faced the parking lot and storage tank and not the falls. The overall quality of the room it self was not the best. Materials used in the room itself where somewhat cheap. Needs a serious remodel.
Have to say one of the most incredible misses by the hotel was breakfast. Remember, this is Hawaii. The expectation was fresh fruits, etc. What they delivered was boxed cereal and pre wrapped pastries from Costco. Truly laughable.

We did have a cat make it into our room on night one. The response of staff of \"just close the door\" is definitely not the right one. Let's see, no AC and you want us to close the door so that a cat, which should not be entering the room to begin with, cannot get in. Yeah, time to re-think the roaming cat policy.

The key metric to any hospitality enterprise is would someone return. Our answer to that would be no. The property has a wonderful location but is definitely overpriced for the room and amenities you get.

Romantic/Peaceful Gem in Hilo

My husband and I used to live in Hilo and we were briefly visiting as part of a 10 year anniversary trip to the Big Island. We had no idea this little gem existed! It's off the beaten path and I'd recommend bringing dinner with you (we brought sushi from our favorite place, Ebisuya Sushi). You can sit on the main balcony overlooking the waterfall. The room was spacious and comfy, with a balcony and views of the surrounding jungle. We fell asleep to the sound of gentle rain and frogs. There was plenty of food for breakfast, even at 5 am (we were still on mainland time). There are nice paths around the property and you can swim in the falls, although we did not. Overall, it was cozy, the staff was great, and we will be back!

Botanical trail was breathtaking. Room reservations a bit confusing. We thought we booked the main building. We ended up without a view from our room in a different building. They had a power outage but the staff handled it professionally. Everything was clean and in touch with nature and peaceful environment. We would stay there again but more careful with room selection.

nice place, but needs improvement

This is my second time here, once many years ago. It is a very beautiful property and pretty well maintained. Its very unique and a nice location. My complaints are that the bed was absolutely terrible (we were in the Jade Cottage). The pillows and linens we youth hostel quality as well.

The other complaint is that this \"bed and breakfast\" presently is not serving a real breakfast as they did historically. The serve some small what they call \"grab and go\" processed foods that were terrible. This is a real bummer because the Inn is way out of town, a 12 minute drive. So not having a real breakfast is a serious downgrade and greatly lessens the value of the stay. I in fact would not stay there again until they fix this issue. Rather than spending the time and money on the chef at night for the expensive but optional dinners, they should put those resources first into the breakfast (which was first class when i stayed there years ago).

We booked two of the three cabins. The experience is surreal and wonderful for camping enthusiasts. It was more like “glamping” than camping. There are ocean views, farm views, cows, goats, wild pigs, cats, frogs, and so many birds. While watching the sunrise, we noticed the frogs stopped their chirping and the birds began their songs. It is off the grid, though WiFi is available and we had cellphone service. You share a kitchen, bathrooms, and showers with those that work there. We walked to the main bed and breakfast area down the road, enjoying the macadamia nuts and farm animals along the way. The bamboo forest and waterfall are the show stoppers, making for an experience you cannot have anywhere else. Breakfast is not included when you stay in the cabins, but Ken’s Pancake House, Cafe 100, and many other great places are about 15 minutes away. We are so glad we spent a few nights here, and will make it a little longer next time! Mahalo!

Best thing about the property is the view fromthe lanai while wating breakfast, trails and beautiful plants and flowers around the waterfall. We even had a siamese cat, named Momo, escort us down to the waterfall trail and back. Sleeping with open doors and windows (bug screens) and hearing the waterfall was amazing! Think rustic elegance , but with wifi. Definitely a special place.

Nice nature get away!

Nice cabin. I also stayed one night at the Inn and the room was great, with a waterfall view.
The farm is simple, but the cabins and common areas are very clean and comfortable. To be perfect, they could have an wifi amplifier at the cabins.

The property is beautiful and as a guest you have private access to walk, swim, bike and more. The two cats on the property are excellent hosts/companions and will follow you on walks to waterfall. It’s very tranquil here.

The drive up the four-mile private road is scenic, through groves of macadamias, some cocoa, and other pastoral fields. The physical location of the Inn is very very nice, and it is enjoyable just sitting listening to and seeing the waterfall. Lexi checking us in could not have been nicer, more positive, or more helpful. Let me say we enjoyed our stay, BUT.

The Inn needs to change a few things, particularly if they continue to charge the nightly rates they do (close to $300 in our case). The construction is pretty basic, cheap doors, locks, faucets, artwork,etc. The towels and linens need replacing, as do the curtains (holes, really), and the mattress was soft for our liking.

OK, so it's Covid we get it. There is no room housekeeping, and we can live with that - although other places we stayed offered it. Other places we stayed this trip did breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Inn has put a decent cooked breakfast on hold (at least we assume they used to offer one), and replaced it with a smatteriing of Costco-bought crap which they leave out full time. Here we are in the land of fruit and we have plastic fruit cups. We have individual cereal boxes, but no milk (sorry but macadamia nut milk does not work for us). Packaged muffins, granola bars, and some apples and oranges? No orange juice or any juice. It's billed as a \"touchless breakfast bar\" but everyone is touching everything. It would be much safer to offer a cooked breakfast served to each individual. There are large

The location is ok, but the hotel is ancient. It doesn't worth the money it is really expensive. The beds are very uncomfortable and the linens very old. The room's curtains were from the old times, and the one from the bathrooms was falling all the time. If you pay $100 a night is ok, but for more than $300 a night, NO.

Falls Make It Worth It

The falls are breathtaking and sleeping with the door open and listening to them is an experience not to be missed. Seriously, that is worth the price. That said, there are... issues. 1) The water pressure randomly goes from bad to worse to non-existent. I don’t know if this is by design to keep people from using too much water or if they were having problems or it just is. I was in the midst of a shower when it just disappeared. I had to wait 5 minutes with a shampooed head before I could attempt to rinse it out. A text to the office was not met with a reply-ever. This didn’t happen just once. Brushing your teeth-water goes out. Taking your meds-water goes out. I finally filled up water bottles I had brought with me in case I needed the water! 2) The directions to rooms are unclear. Being told to park by the “rock wall” when there are multiple rock walls & it’s dark & raining is not particularly helpful.
3) The bed, while big, was frankly not that comfortable.

Finally, if you do stay there, visit Lavaloha which is only 5 minutes away for the best chocolate you will ever eat -not kidding-it’s AMAZING!!!

Fantastic location. Very unique and beautiful. You are paying for the proximity to the waterfall, not necessarily the amenities. We stayed in the main building. The room was decent, nothing extraordinary. Keep in mind that they generate their own electricity here, and there didn’t seem to be any cooling or A/C besides fans (it got pretty warm, even in February). The big porch and trail down to the waterfall were great.
