Thankfully, I booked a premium room- which has very clearly been redone in recent years. The bathroom and bed was lovely- but truth be told, the hotel itself is so, so old and outdated. Lack of lighting, dark and do finger… you could also smell the scent of cigarettes in the lobby. It literally felt like an old hospital/psych wards… I’d recommend it if it’s a quick one night stay, but sheesh- weird, and overpriced for what it was…

We had a wonderful stay at the Distinction Luxmore!! Room was clean and tidy upon our arrival, and incredibly comfortable - one of the nicest beds we’ve ever had in any class of accomodation. Plenty of parking and an excellent location right in the middle of town. Highly recommended!!

Very old and dated. Not even a Smart TV. Dined in the in-house restaurant only to be told that we had to vacate the table in an hour. We were intending to spend the evening there. Would not return and would not recommend. Also, it's very deceiving have 2 Hotels called the Distinction in a small place like Te Anau.

Very nice room- bed was very comfortable, quiet and clean. There were places for your luggage and toiletries. Really appreciate the night light in the bathroom - blue under counter lights ; and the assortment of hot drink choices with the kettle. Wonderful towels and water pressure. Only one rack for towels in the shower - I’d really like a little hook for towels near the sink. Also balconies are very close to neighbors. But love the comfy chairs in the room. Great sleep.

We were in the deluxe family room which was huge and spotless. It seemed like it was renovated recently. Very comfy and the air conditioning worked great.

Breakfast buffet had a good variety and the staff there were so helpful. They were accommodating and kind throughout the whole stay.

Location was central and felt safe. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Check in was strange - when I tried to check in was told they don’t check people in until 2.30/3pm and they emailed people to tell them that. Expedia has the check in time as 2pm and I’d received no email from them - when I pushed back and told them this the person at reception went to check to see if my room was ready and it was. Not sure why they (a) can’t stick to their published check in times and (b) have a system so the front desk knows which rooms are ready when.

Staff was delightfully helpful, definitely went the extra mile to ensure we enjoyed our stay. The Premium King rooms were exceptionally nice; the Standard room had a more outdated TV and lacked some of the upgrades of the premium rooms, but that is to be expected. Amy at the front desk was particularly engaging and helpful when we had an issue getting the Premium room TVs to stream what we wanted to watch.

This hotel contains both renovated and unrenovated rooms. I booked and paid for a renovated room but apparently the hotel had oversold this inventory during peak season, and I was instead given an unrenovated room that also happened to be directly next to a bar that played a live band until past 1am which made it impossible to sleep (when I had a 5am wakeup the next day). Thankfully, for the second night, the hotel moved me to the room I actually booked. But paying for a renovated room and getting an unrenovated one (much less the bar noise and the fact that the unrenovated one wasn't very clean) was a terrible experience -- it completely ruined my New Year's Eve. It is not hyperbole to say this was the worst experience I'd ever had at a hotel in the 15 years I've been traveling. Hotel staff was nice and tried their best to help (especially the manager and Amy at the front desk), which was appreciated -- but apparently they couldn't do anything for the first night, which in my opinion is simply unacceptable, especially given how much I had paid (which was not adjusted to account for this terrible first night).

The room was fine. Bed was comfortable. Housekeeping was lax. Front desk staff were courteous. And maybe it’s an American thing but why did I have to leave the hotel and go to their next door restaurant to get ice? Then you have to hassle with the restaurant staff to get some? Breakfasts were good but don’t even think about taking a cup of coffee back to your room unless you pay an additional $5. The common areas of the hotel were drab and so not fitting with the beautiful country. I’ll be back to Te Anau but I’ll work hard to find different accommodation.

The location was good; however, the room had outdated decor and an unpleasant odor. It was impossible to sleep throughout the night due to an annoying noise resembling a deep mechanical hum. Additionally, the bathroom did not have a shower curtain, which made it impossible to shower without water spilling outside the bathroom. Breakfast was alright.
In my opinion it is not worth the price to stay at this place.

Lackluster, drab hotel. Room was on first floor looking out at parking lot. Strange things like door being hard to open/close because rubbed on below carpet, thermostat that required a college degree to figure out, a strange luminescent blue light under the bathroom sink, no luggage stand, cold lighting throughout the room, switches in weird spots. Breakfast very average. I should have asked for a room with a better view

We had three night here and while the room was clean, comfortable and spacious it was very dated. The whole hotel felt a little old.
For the nightly price they are charging I would have expected something a little more modern.
Having said that the included breakfast is great and the location is very continent to walk to plenty of cafes and restaurants.

I stayed here with my two little kids and we had such a great time! The staff were absolutely amazing—so kind, helpful, and genuinely welcoming. Travelling solo with young kids can be tough, but they went out of their way to make things easy and comfortable for us. The location was perfect, close to everything we needed.

A special shoutout to the breakfast and restaurant team — the food was delicious and the staff were incredible with the kids. It really made a big difference to our mornings!
We’ll 100% be staying here again.

Room 279 faces onto the main road which was busy and noisy with traffic and people. There is nowhere to sit in the room and one dilapidated seat on a balcony just big enough to hold two. The rest of the hotel might be in better condition but the annex where the standard rooms are is tired and in need of a refurbishment.

Parking was easy and they let us leave our car an extra night while we went on a Milford Sound overnight cruise. Close to shops, food and lake. Hotel breakfast was pretty good but finishes at 9am.

Updated older property. We rented one of their larger rooms and were surprised that our room did not have AC however other rooms in the hotel did have AC. Shower was nice and had a large jet tub however we did not have time to use it. The breakfasts that we had at the hotel were fine with plenty to eat at buffet style breakfast.

The property is very tired and attention to detail is just not there. Our power went out on the first night for an hour or so and there was no communication, nor an offer for any compensation or even an apology. The room is also the first room I have stayed in the was not air conditioned. The bathroom was really nice and clean, but the bed spreads were stained and horrible. The included breakfast was quite average. Overall they are relying on the tourist trade for this below average hotel.

The hotel grew on me. We arrived on Christmas Day at the same time as a large coach party so check in was a little slow. I suggest that the hotel puts a soft drink stand with cups by reception, as it's a hotel that does attract a lot of coach parties and queues at reception are inevitable. At least offering people a free welcome cold drink would be a nice touch. In fact, the staff were really friendly. Our room was spacious, with two queen beds.
