loved the motel. great lication, great room, goid size with a tiny, but sufficient kitchen, great space for sitting area. since it was off-season, it was self check in, but when I called the number to confirm we were leaving luggage in storage for a few days (while we were tramoing the Milford Track) as agreed ahead of time, the owner answered on the first & only call & took care of it. the room was clean both times we stayed. loved it. only complaint is the laundry room could use a clean. maybe not once a day, but like once every few months maybe. The one washer & dryer both worked great, but that room needs a vaccuum especially the multy-layer of cobwebs all over.

We will never stay here again or tell our friends to stay here, because they advertised a Queen size bed but they failed to mention that it was two single ensembles joined together by a large zip right down the middle of the bed making it very uncomfortable to get a good night's sleep. It collapsed in the middle. A very dated room, needs a face lift and way overpriced for what we received.

The property is well priced and conveniently located however the room was not adequately cleaned/vacuumed and is very outdated. All dishes and kitchen pans had to be washed before using as they were not clean. Beds not great.
The kitchen was however well outfitted. Toilet was very clean and the linens were soft and fresh/clean.
Shower door leaked water over the floor and the shower had some mold patches on the floor.
There was no staff on site, key was left taped to the door when we arrived at 4:00 p.m.
This was the most disappointing accommodation we have yet experienced during our New Zealand trip.

Good choice for Te Anau

Alphnorn is on a residential street that also has several other small motels. It is a short walk (using a cut-through) to the lake front and not far to restaurants and shopping, We appreciated having a kitchenette and separate bedroom. The front office was not open during the time we were there, but the keys were left for us and a note on the door gave a phone number to call if needed.

I didnt like anything. It was old and outdated. Stains all over carpet. Took us three phone calls to get onto someone to advise we would be arriving late. Then the key was put in an envelope and attached to the reception door. With everyone else's keys.

Worst place have stayed on 6 week tour around NZ

We arrived at the Alpernhorn Motel around 5pm to find our key taped to the office window along with others. We were stunned to arrive at what is certainly the worst accommodation we had have after five weeks in New Zealand.

The room was very dingy and the rooms were extremely dated. Out of date folder is provided. There is no air conditioning in the room and it was very stuffy.
My wife called to ask if we could have a fan as she had spotted one in room 4 next to our room. She was told only room 6 and 7 had fans.
We went out as was a lovely afternoon. When we returned the room was so stuffy. My wife went to reception but forgot it is only maned between 2-4pm. She spotted two fans in the reception area. She rang again and explained the room was so stuffy and could somebody give us one of the fans.
A man came quite quickly and got the fan from reception. He explained they had a hotel along the road so if any problems to call the number.

The beds were too low for us and the bedspreads looked cheap and worn. The furniture was poor quality ans very old. I doubt if this motel has seen a refurbishment in the last 20 years.

The gardens are very nice at the property and we spent as much time outside as we could as much more pleasant than being in the room.

The bathroom appears to be the only place modernised.

If we had not had a long journey and we were going on a full day trip the next day to Doubtful sound we would not have stayed.
Easy money and they clearly don’t care.

The property is a little dated but it was clean and quiet. Reception is not always staffed however when I rang about leaving my bag because I was arriving early I was advised to leave my bag at the Village Inn. When I returned to check in Teddy offered to drive me to the Alpenhorn Motel, so going over and beyond. At the end of my stay Teddy was extremely helpful and offered to drive me to the bus stop. Thanks a million.

This was the worst hotel on our entire trip. The office closed at 4pm. We called ahead and the person did not want to have to come back to meet us. Went thru a pre-pay process to avoid him having to make a trip. Arrived - room pretty run down. A friend locked himself out and had to call someone to come unlock the room. The owner/mgr arrived pretty quickly. Our fan plug was broken - asked for another one - was told maintenance not in on the weekend as he was in his vehicle pulling out. No offer of anything else. With a little fixing up it could be ok - but no effort has been put into it. Stayed in much nicer locations for much less money during the trip. Would not recommend.

Reception office was closed and no one was in attendance from the moment of arrival to point of departure.

All communication / instructions was via notes taped on pieces of paper taped to the office door.

Did not see a single motel staff.

Room was tidy and clean.
Double bed was rather low and on the soft side.
Room was clean and tidy.
Kitchen tap was leaking.

Basically it is a row of self contained units with shingle car parking right outside each unit door.

If service is required a mobile phone number is provide to call for assistance.

a small yet fine motel complex with complete facilities. After our arrival we had to clean the small kitchen which was well equipped, but this did not detract from our stay. We had a room with good heating as well as a kitchen and a small shower with toilet. We loved the small terrace which was surrounded by rhododendron bushes and had a great view of the mountains. Parking right outside the front door was also no problem. Pay washing machine is available. Alpenhorn was an ideal starting point for us on foot and by car to reach the surrounding natural beauty.

We Turned up to a vacant place, floor was still dirty in the kitchen, curtains ripped, towells freyed on the edges. N complimentary milk for a cup of tea. Cold dated and looked nothing like the pictures.

We left after one night due to the conditions, an absolute dissapointment and would like a refund. A terrible stay and not at all what it was advertised as.

Parking off the street and at your door.
Not on the main drive along the lake, but one block away from the lakeshore drive and walk.

Can easily (<10Min) walk to the glow worm tour or to the small (nicely done) downtown as well as some nice restaurants.
Of my several nights on the South Island, this was my favorite layover.
Don't miss the Sand Fly Cafe for Eggs Benedict (a new name now, but google knows it as Sand Fly.

Nice to have the pedestal fan provided - it was hot in the room and we were unable to open windows due to no fly screens (apparently the norm in NZ). Shower was old and antiquated - we had to fix the knob, as it was screwed on in the opposite direction. Walls between units were paper thin - all voices from neighbours were heard (we were conscious not to speak too loudly). Contactless check-in was great. Convenient short 10-15 min walk to boat jetty and town. Overall, a lovely little motel at a very reasonable price.

This hotel does not match its description. The grounds are overgrown and basics done, but loos neglected. The bed linens are rumble, the bath towels are small, thin and have threads hanging from them. Booking three rooms, I would have hoped we be next to one another. Not very close to town center but walkable.

Front desk was meant to be open until 6 p.m. DAILY.....this wasn't the case; we arrived about 4-ish/4.30-ish to find reception locked & a named envelope waiting for me sellotaped to the window....not particularly welcoming.
After long drive to get to Te Anau, people often like to have couple of hot drinks, then another one in morning when you get up......only 4 little pottles of milk for the 2 of us - & certainly not worth going out to buy milk for our overnight stay.
Otherwise, basic but satisfactory (light in toilet not working).

It was a very quiet place and I think it would have been good if we only would have stayed one night. The service off the motel was poor as we were told on arrival that beds would not be made and milk was only supplied on the first day. Reception was not very fluid in English and of no help with recomondations. Our room was not supplied with tea or coffee on the second day or tea towels and rubbish was not removed. Needed to ring managment as office was unattended and get them to send someone to rectify. Would not stay there again!
