A conveniently located hotel with large rooms

I would describe the Wyndham Grand Plaza as a four star hotel and not and 4.5 star. It is rather worn out and tired with a drinks lounge that offered little entertainment value and only a few armchairs in the lobby. The marble flooring is old and worn and the bath room fittings the same. The plus points are that it's well located, near the West lake and the room is very spacious. Breakfast is also quite adequate.
Hangzhou, on the other hand, is a wonderful destination, green, low density (compared to other Chinese cities) with great food and nice people!

Old facility, no AC at 29 degree room temperature

I was locked in the bathroom of the first room I entered because the sliding door couldn't be opened from the inside if the bathroom door was completely closed. The second room was unbearably warm at 26 degrees Celsiu and no air conditioning. The thick winter bedding made the room temperature felt unbearable which prevented me from falling asleep. It faced a night market, making it too noisy to open the balcony door to have fresh and cool air. The third room was quieter than the first two but still lacked air conditioning, with the temperature reaching 29 degrees. As a result, I decided to cancel my third night.

I don't think this is 5 start hotel: 1) the property facilities are old, for example, the glass-door of shower room cannot prevent shower water leak to bathroom, always. 2) the swimming pool in basement is dark and dirty, with very bad smell, I didn't use but looked around. The fitting facilities and swimming pool are open to public, such as training groups, unsafe at all. 3) the main hotel entry door doesn't open to the street facing west lake (if so that'll be great), however, it's opening to a narrow street with busy traffic, looks like free-market.

Just beside the famous West Lake, beautiful neighborhood, the facilities are new and advanced, friendly staffs.

It looks like the hotel shares with other organizations in the same buildings, and it caused the confusion when I arrived. As it locates in the famous tourism area, you can imagine the area is pretty crowded.

The health club was closed during my whole stay!
They said they would call me a cab so I can go swimming at a different hotel! The pool was one of the main reason I even wanted to book this hotel. I was very disappointed. Even though I did decide to book this extension of one extra night. The rooms and service were really great though but nothing can make up for the pool being closed, I love to swim.

Firstly lost my passport several times. The staff were very confused about the booking. This took about 5 minutes to fix.

But then the real problems began. My credit card got put I to about 5 different machines. Some repeatedly. I put my pin in multiple times. On different machines. And a few times o. The same machine. No declined slips.

This is when the staff began lying. And I hate this.

A different girl was dealing with me for the booking than the girl playing with my card.

When I asked what she was doing. She immediately lies to me. And tells me the card was declined.

Without looking. Or talking to the other girl. And I don't mean English. Not Chinese or a touch or a look. Just starts arguing.

There is now a pending transaction on my card I don't believe to be a deposit.

There was a lot of confusion. And I think I got charged twice for the room fee. And then a deposit.

Also all off our group was charged different deposits.

This maybe is not a problem.

Maybe this will all get fixed.

It's just disappointing ☹️

Then when I got to my room with all my luggage. The room key did not work.

I felt that I was double charged.

First of all, I paid deposit during check-in, and then paid full hotel bills during check-out. However, later on, my credit card showed 2 transactions from this hotel ( I booked 2 rooms). I contacted the hotel but they insisted to say that was \"pre-authrization\"and will be refunded soon....

Doesn't make sense that I paid full deposit and bills, why \"pre- authorization\" after check-out???

Nice location - close to the west lake and shopping areas. But the hotel seems to be unfinished with the back garden or square blocked. The gym and swimming pool etc was closed due to more than a year unpaid rent?! We were offered to use the gym in the grant Hyatt. It’s about 10 minutes walk by the lake. I think I’ll stay there next time!

Even though we arrived after check-in time, we had to wait over an hour for our room to be cleaned. This was disappointing after a long journey to get there, and had based our travel timing on getting to hotel at appropriate time so that we could check in immediately and rest. Staff was friendly, but unprepared for our arrival. They promised to send food to our room because of the inconvenience. After being in the room for 90 minutes, nothing had arrived. We called front desk, and they were clueless about it. Five minutes later, they called room back and said they would bring up some fruit \"in another hour or two\".

Hotel and room were nice and clean. All staff seemed friendly throughout the stay, except continuing to mishandle the check-in.

The Sawasdee Thai restauraunt onsite was good, but we were scammed on our bill and charged double the advertised price. Had no time to dispute and correct at checkout, so ended up having to pay the overcharge.

Although a nice hotel physically, not being able to check in on time and being scammed by the restaurant on dinner is enough to find another hotel on my next visit to Hangzhou.

We had an excellent time for our 35 wedding anniversary. The staffs provided excellent services and foods. West Lake was the most romantic place for us. Anita Araujo and Bruce Li at the check in time were wonderful. Michael Guo and Bela Wu at the executive lounge provided excellent drinks and foods. At the buffet breakfast, Ruslan Chaykovsky made the best Lattes for us and Angela was so sweet and lovely to greet us every morning. Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Hangzhou was the best.

2 Nights Pleasant Stay

We are a family of 9 with my elderly parents and young nephews. Check in was alright. We were given tea while waiting and my dad had a nice chat with Ms. Anita. There was a front desk staff Ms. Surich Zhao who was not so friendly and was bordering on being hostile. That kind of marred the whole experience.

Rooms were big and spacious. We could open all 3 luggage at the same time and still had space to walk. There was a small clump of hair stuck to a sticky patch on our bathroom floor and my OCD sister was a little put off by that.

Our rooms were on the 6th floor and guest rooms are only from level 3 to 9. We had to request for an extra bed in one of the rooms at 300yuan per night.

The hotel prepared a cake for my sister’s birthday without us informing or mentioning to them at all. That was very thoughtful and certainly earned brownie points. There was turn down service every night and also a small plate of welcome fruits on our first day.

Location is undeniably convenient. West Lake is just a 5 minutes stroll, Yan An Road shopping district is about 15 minutes walk and a night market around the corner is 10 minutes away.

I would certainly return for another stay if I come back to HangZhou.

Hotel is only 5 minutes away from West Lake, MRT, shopping and restaurants. It is very convenient location if your want to stay close to West Lake. We stay in Executive Room and the service is excellent. There are one issue during checkin. They insist that I only booked the normal room from Expedia. I have to show them my Expedia Booking confirmation email in order to get the executive room. I am not sure who fault is it - Expedia or the hotel. My feeling is the hotel. This type of thing should NOT happen to a 5 star hotel.

we stayed 4 nights at this hotel. after they had moved us from one room to the next due to noisy wing of the hotel, on the second night we discovered bed-bucks in my bed. initially, the manger tried to denied our claim that there could be bed bucks in the hotel, but after i insisted that the blood spots on the sheets are from bed bucks he tried to help. first, he agreed to wash all my clothes, then he said he will move us to another cleaner room.
when we checked out another shift manager gave us hard time. he behaved as if he was a police officer trying to enforce his authority. he spoke with vulgar language to my daughter and was not helpful in finding us a large car to drive the whole family to the train station.
the only person or persons who tried to help were an Italian manager. his name is Leonardo, and other non-Chinese receptionists. all Chinese receptionist were not helpful and had no idea what customer service means.

Very pleased with the location and facilities of the hotel but the services suck big time.
Most of the hotel staff don’t exhibit passion for their job and hence don’t bother to provide much service. Even during check-in and check-out, they were just providing the service with no smile on them. We were waiting for taxi. The hotel staff at the door did not bother to come up to us and check in with us. I have to walk up to him and ask if he can help us with the taxi. He ONLY bother to update us after I kept looking at him for sometime and he only came back with the answer, “no taxi”, that’s all. The guest service manager tried to savage the situation by offering some stuff but still, there’s gaps in communications, resulting in unpleasant moments. I brought my parents on a holiday, booking a 4-5 star hotel, expecting a smooth and enjoyable holiday for them. But the stay really makes it less pleasant for us all.

All the hotel staff were nice, courteous and helpful. The hotel is close to the west lake and shopping area. Very convenient. This is my family trip and we have 5 people. The hotel was about to arrange mini van for us to go anywhere. The cost is a bit more than a taxi but it was very nice for us. In general we had a very good time staying at the hotel. If you want to have the full view of the west lake, please make sure you find out the information before you book it.

The rooms are clean and nicely laid out. I had issues with the aircon, but overall ok. The staff are good, especially Italian customer service guy Leonardo. The two down sides are the internet and food.

The internet intermittent and when working very slow and this hotel’s internet connection restrictions are massive.

After hearing how good the Thai restaurant was I gave it a go, the food was not great, 5/10. Not worth going into details but would avoid. Breakfast is quite poor and not worth the charge, eggs overly greasy and general quality was just so so.

Business travel. The room was spacious, well appointed, very comfortable and \"like new\". No cigarette smells. The lobby furniture needs upgrading. The gym is very large and well-equipped (even a Concept 2 ERG), however they should pay more attention to general cleanliness. There was a renovation of the spa underway across from the gym, so that might be the reason for the gym's condition. ALL THE STAFF was extremely courteous and attentive. I compliment them.

The hotel was very luxurious and my room was very comfortable. I was able to get an unbelievable rate on hotels.com and I was amazed at the price to quality ratio. I did have to pay for the breakfast buffet and I did this despite the cost (approx. $20) just for convenience sake. While I have had better buffets, this one was pretty good and the staff there was also excellent.

This is one of the very best hotels that I've stayed at in China over the past 20 years. Ihave stayed at somewhat fancier ones but not at the price that the Hangzhou Wyndham charges (at least during June). Not only was it an amazing value (approx $200/night, breakfast included, for an executive room that gives you access to the executive club (happy hour, snacks), but the multinational staff (Chinese, Italian, Russian, German, Belgian) were extraordinarily eager to offer advice and to make sure everything was going well with the hotel stay. Add to this a 25 meter indoor pool, a good fitness center, and a first-rate breakfast buffet and it is hard to figure out any suggestions for improvement. Finally, the location is perfect if you plan to visit Xihu (West Lake) and the various parks, gardens, and temples near the lake. It is an easy 5 minute walk to the lakeside. In short, strongly recommended and I hope to have a chance to return to this hotel in the future.

This was hands down the best hotel I stayed at during this Asia trip, and that includes the Shangri-La in HKG and the Sheraton in Seoul. The staff were overwhelmingly helpful and cordial, and the overall comfort was unparalleled. The Thai restaurant is also simply amazing. We are already planning our next trip to Hangzhou, and we'd have to admit that this hotel is part of that decision!

The Wyndham is an excellent hotel in Hangzhou. I found the price to be very reasonable for one night' stay in May. The area is lively (a short walk to the West Lake) and the hotel is home to some great restaurants. In particular, I dined at Sawasdee, which had great food. I am vegetarian and I found the food there excellent. The service at the hotel itself was commendable both at check-in and during the extensive breakfast buffet. I highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Hangzhou.

Greeted by an international staff; Mexico, Peru, Austria, Spain, Estonia, and, of course, China. All helped to make our stay perfect. Excellent dinner restaurant recommendation near the hotel. Fruit delivered to room in evening. Very clean rooms, great location near lake. Highly recommend.

The staff here was very impressive. For only a little bit more money than the cheapest area hotels, you get staff that remember your name, reach out to you, help you in many ways. We even got a personal tour of the hotel facilities. (Ex. We were shown their rooftop garden which supplies the restaurant on the top floor.) No quality is lost during hand-offs between different shifts of staff. Everyone seems fully aware of what happened on earlier shifts and is equally capable. We interacted mostly with non-Chinese staff that must have been picked from around the world for their unusually good communication and service skills. -- We were guests about two weeks before the big G20 conference here. It's possible we got better staff than this hotel normally has, but this staff had been at this location for at least several months, so you too might find equally impressive staff at other times.

The breakfast buffet was pretty extensive. It included food from a variety of cultures.

We've found in our limited time in China that hotels tend to be fairly affordable unless you ask for extras like laundry, food, snacks, etc. Our sense is that this hotel was no exception. If you're blessed with ample income, you probably won't flinch at the price of the optional extras in China. If you are not, you can probably happily explore for VERY affordable options in town.

Location and friendly staff

Best stay in China!

Everything was perfect. Room was luxurious and so big. Facilities were excellent and clean, location was barely 5mins away from the lake. The front desk staff were so helpful and really friendly.

Quality hotel central to Hangzhow and West Lake

The hotel was lovely but I had booked and paid for a room for 3. This was
clear on the booking but we only had two small beds. I asked for extra towels the first day but they persisted in only leaving two! A little disappointing. The room and bathroom were both huge and the view stunning!

Conveniently located hotel near the west lake

The hotel was near the metro so we found it easily enough. Upon arrival the rooms were clean and the view was great (limited though depending on the level you were on). We had breakfast there too which had a great variety and was a nice way to start off the day. The west lake is just across the street and it was a nice change from the Shanghai skyline. We also tried out the pool and spa area which were nice and clean. Bicycle hire is also across the street at the youth palace.

The staff were a mixture of European and Chinese workers. This was great as they spoke English well. The cleaning maid didn't touch any of our things as well even though we forgot to lock them up before clean up. The staff were very nice and friendly and helpful. I will definitely stay here again the next time I'm in Hangzhou.

I wanted to watch the night show but they stopped it due to the G20 construction works. The whole city feels like it is under construction for this event so be mindful of the noise and detours you may have to take. Otherwise this is out of control of the hotel.

One of the best hotel in Hangzhou

The hotel is very close to Xihu (West Lake) and nearby subway with only 10 min walking. The hotel staff in the reception are very professional and they will proactively approach the check-in customers. One the female expat staff introduces Hangzhou attractions to my wife while another male expat staff taking care about our check-in. He also recommends me to make train ticket booking in the business center that saving me a lot of time. The breakfast with many good choices and are excellent.

The room is very large and with canopy facing Xihu, but unluckily the trees are too tall to see the lake. The room is well decorated, however it also shown sign of age and one of the shower support is falling apart. So I only give 4 stars in the hotel condition.

Overall I think the hotel is one of the best in Hangzhou right next the the tourist attractions.

Nice hotel at the outskirts of West Lake

This hotel is well located within walking distance to the West Lake. The staff are proficient beyond expectations and will go great length to make you feel at home and special. I would suggest a lake view room over the city view ones at the latter is a little noisy to my likings.

Everything great except the room

Pros: Great location. Staff and service excellent. Great pool and gym. Large rooms. Breakfast buffet one of the best i have ever tried in China.

Cons: The room furniture and layout aged and outdated, badly needs a renovation given the fairly high price asked for a room at this hotel.

Would stay here again and again and again

Perfect stay at this genuine 5 star hotel. Every staff member was warm and friendly greeting me every time I walked by them. They really went the extra mile to ensure I had a wonderful experience. The room was large and well appointed with a really great bathroom. Breakfast was really good with plenty of western dishes. All staff spoke English. I would like to stay again in the future and highly recommend it to anyone travelling to the area that wants a 5 star experience with a quiet room in the madness of China

Great hotel for foreign visitors

We booked a king room on the executive level, so you should take that into account. I don't know if staying at that level (and being one of the few western couples) affected our treatment. The room was great, the happy hour and breakfast on the club level were good. What really set them apart was the service. Several times when we passed in the lobby we were asked about our stay by management. My wife mentioned that the room was great but the bed was a bit harder than she liked. By the time we returned they had put on a pillow top. Every time we went out through the lobby we were offered assistance. I also noticed that the staff that interact with guests speak better English than any hotel I have stayed at in China. Two of the managers that went out of their way to help us had French accents (Sheyma from Tunisia, not sure about the other). One of the bellmen studied economics in the US and is studying to work in the hospitality industry...yes, I talk to pretty much everyone I meet. I really felt like we were treated like royalty. PS the Thai Restaurant in the hotel is very good, so good we went there twice and did not make it to the Chinese restaurant.
