Big disappointement with the room, far to expensive for the quality of the room. Only one night light by the bed with a very dirty and disintegrating shade, I paid for a kitchenette with no silverware pots or pans. Room decor does not fit the historic building. Not a hotel to recommend.

Hotel is a dump, smells gross, doors don’t fully close. It’s surrounded by bars so at 2am loud drunks come out yelling and one puked under our window. Parking is 2 blocks away. Downtown Placerville is a cool little town, but there has got to be a better option.

Location was great, bed was decent, shower was good. Friendly staff. This whole hotel could use a refurbish. I know it’s a historic building, but the fittings in the room were neither Gold Rush-era historic nor up-to-date. The whole building had a dusty musty smell. Aside from these minor complaints it was a decent value for the price.

We’ve stayed in room 302 several times and we like it. The room was warm and comfortable and the beds were great. The condition of the room was in need of some minor upkeep. It’s a two bedroom room but there was only one chair to sit in. I used the chair from the desk and it wasn’t great but we managed. The kitchen was stocked with odd, mismatched plates, glasses, forks, spoons, etc. I would have liked a toaster and salt/pepper. We had to ask for dish soap and a kitchen towel. There were no paper towels, sponge, scrubber…
There was a matching set of pots/pans. The fridge worked well.
The staff were all very friendly and fun to talk to. We’ll be back, we love the Cary House.

We had a very nice stay at the Historic Cary House Hotel. The check in was smooth and the gal could not have been more lovely. I regret not learning her name to give her credit for making the stay perfect. She was very friendly and gave lots of good advice on places to eat. Overall just a really nice woman, she made us feel like we had been friends for years. The room was very nice as well. We stayed in a two bedrooms, and it had plenty of space. It’s been updated and had a cute kitchen with two refrigerators. The beds were all upgraded to memory foam mattresses. There were extra pillows and blankets in the closet. The heater worked well and warmed up the room nicely while we went to dinner.
The hotel is old so the floors are not exactly level but it adds to the charm. This place is about 150 years old. It has seen many historic figures pass through its doors, most noteworthy for me was Mark Twain. He’s been my favorite author all my life. This hotel is in the heart of Placerville and easy to walk the cute historic Main Street and close to lots of restaurants and shops. It’s definitely worth the visit if you’re stopping over in Placerville. It’s been very well maintained and in great condition for its age. I most especially loved the elevator! It’s a piece of history all on its own!

We loved the architecture. I will say there was no place to put our luggage and clothing other than on the floor. The toilet ran off and on during the night. There were holes near the bathroom vanity where perhaps a towel rack once existed (no place to hang a towel). Also the \"cabinet\" by the outside wall, where we looked for storage, may have been a stored bed, but upon taking a look, the latch was broken and we were concerned about it falling in the night. Otherwise, we loved it.

The room at the Historic Carey House was not as described online. The listing claimed that the room slept four people, but it only had one queen bed. There was no pullout sofa or Murphy bed as promised. The staff member at the front desk acknowledged this. I asked for at least a partial refund but never received one.

The kitchen was a nice feature, but I was only there for a quick overnight stay. The property is an exceptional example of a gold rush era hotel and is well kept, and in the heart of a rustic gold rush town. I recommend a weekend there to experience the incredible history that NorthernCalifornia has to offer.
(Heard the place was delightfully haunted!) I seem to be immune to that sort of stuff though…

The kitchen had no supplies whatsoever but that was ok. We bought some utensils and plates at the hardware store across the street. The big problem was that there is no AC in October apparently and the room was extremely hot. They gave us two fans to use and that helped but there was no way to keep the windows open to get a breeze. Our little room was sweltering during the day!

This is a lovely old hotel, from the beautiful stained glass to the original elevator. The staff was helpful and pleasant. All was very clean. The electrical outlet in our bathroom, however, did not work. Some of the repairs that had been made in our room was poor workmanship. Enjoyed our stay none the less.

I really enjoy staying here because I love that I can walk to VibesUp store and the Enchanted Forest Restuarant - the Hotel is historic but very well kept, clean and quaint- so much fun each time I visit with friends for a wonderful experience in downtown Placerville. The staff is beyond wonderful, and I love that the elevator still working and surprising us with a different experience each and every ride is FUN!!!

Great historic property and central to everything in Placervile.
Old building, so heat/cooling is tricky, and with hard wood floors, it was a little chilly but extra blankets provided. Squeeky floors, loud door and old windows with lots of street noise, but all to be expected. Well equipped and fun to stay at such an old hotel with so much history.

This was a very unusual experience. The hotel is historic and very convenient to the quaint downtown. The hotel elevator is probably the oldest you will ever use. It has an uncomfortable bump when it lands. The floor in the lobby near the elevator is uneven and presented a fall hazard. The bedroom was very small, but there was a separate siting room. There was a kitchenette in the sitting room, but there wasn't a table where you could sit around to enjoy a meal or snack. The carpet felt dirty. We couldn't figure out the two TV remote setup, and the problem was immediately solve when we let the office know.

We spent the day in Apple Hill, and checked in at 3:30. We walked up and down the quaint Main Street of Placerville, and had dinner at a restaurant that was recommended by the hotel. Dinner at Brick's was yummy,
and a short stroll from the Hotel.
We slept well and got up and went to coffee at Cuppa in the morning. The only small issue we had was the trash being collected at 5:30 am, (This is a city issue, not hotel)

I love this property with is old fashioned furnishings, staircase , and elevator that can only hold two people. Traveling as a group of three friends the two bedroom unit met our requirements. It would be great for a family.

Only drawback was seeing a homeless person sleeping in the alley next to the hotel.

we like the Cary house for our getaway to the wine country in Plymouth area. Generally, the weather is good, but this weekend was up to 100 degrees. Across the street is a nice little public house restaurant which had good bites and beer choice and meal choices. We went to the Buttercup Pantry restaurant for breakfast and that was also very good. It is the old part of town so there is some history that is interesting. Thank you Placerville.

It's over a 170 yrs old. It's Historic and it's dated. It's also rumored that it's haunted. Its not a resort and amenities are limited. Everything is in walking distance. You are smack dab in the middle of Placerville. Huge plus. Convenient. Staff is friendly and helpful.

We always stay at the Cary House when we visit Placerville. It's within 15 minutes drive to great wineries, you're across the street from great restaurant's and the local shops are charming. We enjoy taking a stroll around the town after dinner and look in the shop windows. Maybe on day we will even encounter a ghost!

The property was was very nice just be aware of the elevator, it’s old and they tell you to watch your step and I forgot and tripped but there’s a VibesUp store nearby and they fixed my sore knee quickly!

Overall good. Great location, and wonderful history surrounding this hotel and the setting. We had some issues with our room, both tv's did not work. We let the front desk know, they came up immediately to check it out. They were not able to get the tv's to work so they moved us to another room where everything worked. I commend the staff for quickly responding and accomodating us due to the situation.

I enjoyed my two night stay here, but the place is a little bit funky. The bathroom was clean and modern, but the rooms are kind of dated and getting luggage throughthe elevator is a wrestling match despite it charm of being so old. The building was built in 1857 and it’s an interesting place to stay. I would probably go back because the staff was great And it’s got a good location for what I do when I’m in town.

Very pretty Victorian hotel. Very convenient to walk and stay in town. The lobby is lovely. The room wasn’t keeping with the theme. The beds were fairly comfortable. There was no microwave. There was a small stove but non pots or any kitchen accessories, so no way to warm or cook anything. The room was very clean, the receptionist was very. Ice and helpful.

This was a great unexpected stay with inclement weather after a long day dictating I not drive through the pass. It’s right downtown. Unfortunately most places were closed that day or closed early so by the time I was settled it was tough to find food. Not the hotels fault. All in all a great place to rest up. I’d stay again.

Very kitschy but safe. Only one guy on duty at night and he was not exactly welcoming or courteous. Rooms had very usable kitchen. Bathroom was bigger than expected. Bed was very old. All furniture very old and cheap. Things are in decent condition but they really are leaning on “historic” to not spend money updating basics. Everything just felt like it was last updated in the 70s or 80s.

Old time elevator was a fun trip into the past 😀

A historic hotel, excellent proximity to walkable restaurants and shops. I enjoy the two separate bedrooms for my family. I would have been happier with a less-saggy mattress (bed comfort weighs heavily in my ratings). Bathroom and linens were clean. Shower squealed during use. This is an excellent and affordable waypoint between Tahoe and the SF Bay.
