Property was interesting an old convent I believe but although they mentioned no elevator to rooms they did not mention that there were over 40 steep steps straight off the street to the reception. Carrying heavy suitcases up was awful. Two of us really hurt ourselves.

Had a choice of booking a Classic or Superior room, the later being advertised as being larger in size with space to relax in.
It wasn't until we got there, and questioned the room allocation, that we were told that all rooms, apart from the suites, were the same size. Very disappointed as we paid for a Superior room, but ended up with a room with just about enough room to swing a cat. Would recommend only if you would like a place to return to a sleep only.

L’air conditionné et le mini réfrigérateur ne fonctionnaient pas. Aucun couvert sur les tables extérieures pour le petit déjeuner, nous devions aller en chercher nous mêmes sur les tables à l’intérieur. Les photos de la chambre supérieure double sur leur site ne correspondait pas du tout à celle qu’on nous a attribué. La personne qui se chargeait de nous monter nos bagages n’avait aucun sourire et on sentait qu’on le dérangeait. Cet hôtel n’est pas un 4 étoiles tel qu’il se prétend. Le seul point positif est le jardin intérieur.

We loved the historical old Carmelita convent feel !
The staff was so professional yet friendly I marveled at the curious layout- we looked through one window and saw the inner courtyard garden of the Anglican St Paul’s church -part of the same building but a world away! There were so many picturesque corners:
The mysterious inner courtyard and beautiful ivy framed welcoming courtyard and the charming deck with clear view to the city streets! It was so quiet and felt so safe !
I will never tire of their breakfasts and I miss them now as I write this. The fun expresso machine in our rooms and at the buffet make a happy sound: promising perfect coffee in a moment. All was so enchanting.
The room was spacious and the extras special. I even used the sewing kit. The all-purpose soap in the shower was not very good for hair but we bought some shampoo & conditioner and solved that small problem.
The two flights of stairs to get to the reception added to the feel of arriving into a different century — old Lisboa. Obligada

We loved our stay!

We were very pleased with this hotel. We were there in February. We didn't find any street noise with the windows closed. The breakfast was great with a wide selection: bacon, scrambled eggs, quiche, charcuterie, juices, fruit, different breads and buns, and many different pastries. It is about a 20 minute walk from the metro but there are buses that pass on the street. It was a 16 euro Bolt ride to the airport when we reserved ahead. The only two downsides are the lack of parking and the number of stairs. . Personally we didn't mind the stairs but it is not accessible. There is a porter to help with the luggage. The reception is 24/7 so you leave your key with them when you step out. There are many restaurants within a short walk. There is a decent size grocery store about a 10 minute walk away.

Located well between the centre and the Belem attractions. If you don't mind a bit of up and down walking, you can get to most attractions by foot within c45mins to 1 hour. Plenty of transport options with cheap public transport and good value Uber etc

The hotel has charm and quite quirky, where you have to go up a number of steps to get to reception, with no lifts in sight - a porter does the heavy lifting for you!

We stayed in the refurbished section, which was light, spacious and lovely. The other areas of the hotel were a bit moody / dark but full of character accordingly. There is a very nice / sunny open courtyard on your way to reception, which the breakfast room overlooks.

Breakfast is good, with plenty of choice, although the 'hot food' options are at best tepid, depending upon when you get there.

Staff are very friendly, pleasant and helpful.

We very much enjoyed our stay.

Gracious hotel in gorgeous old convent

Lovely hotel in a former old convent. Our room was elegant and austere (no TV, which was just great). The bathroom had a great shower and a towel heating rack. Breakfast buffet was diverse and delicious. The public spaces (dining room, sitting room, patio) are welcoming and characterful. The hotel retains its older character which is charming and gracious. If you want a new hotel with all the mod cons, you may want to look elsewhere. And if you have any problem climbing stairs, you definitely should not stay here - you do have to carry your luggage up a number of outdoor stone stairs to reception. The hotel staff is awesome about helping you up to your room, but again, if you have mobility issues, there is no elevator.

The hallways can use new carpets and general upgrade, but to me it didn;t matter because the overall experience was authentic and I preferred this over a new modern hotel. Property was old and had lots of character. Nice oitdoor sitting area where you can have a glass of wine. Although there were 3 flights of stairs, which multiple people complained about in their reviews, a young gentleman was sitting at the bottom in a waiting area to take up my luggage. He grabbed mine and took it up tbe stairs to my room. The staff were amazingly nice and could not have been more helpful. Property is a little way off the beaten track. If you want more excitement stay in the chado area. If you want safe, quiet this is the place. They also have a very nice selection of breakfast foods and coffee/espresso and dinner (at a cost). Bed was very comfortable and bedding smelled fresh and waa crisp. Shower grout need a better cleaning. Overall I would recomment this place.

It’s a beautiful old house which has been completely renovated. Everything is comfortable and high end: the bathroom, the bed, the sheets. The breakfast is delicious with lots of options. But the house itself is just beautiful. One feels as if it was one’s aristocratic grandmother’s house! The breakfast room looks to the beautiful patio. Within walking distance to what one needs to see in Lisbon, but the area is quiet and safe.

The idea of sleeping in a 400 year old building is amazing. They have done a beautiful job with the upgrades to the building over the centuries so that it is completely modern and clean inside while maintaining the structure of the building from the 1600's. The staff is VERY attentive and professional and welcoming. The daily breakfast is fresh and delicious. In the very easy walking distance are several terrific restaurants, mutliple museums and exciting bars. I can't say enough good about this hotel. Be aware that there is no elevator and you will have to walk up and down stairs - just as the Carmelite nuns did. So if steps are a problem, stay somewhere boring with an elevator. But I assure you, the entire experience is worth the climb. (The staff WILL carry your luggage to and from your room, so all you have to carry is yourself.)

The outdoor courtyard area is beautiful, and the hotel is in a very nice area. The breakfast was good. The room itself was much older and in worse condition than those pictured on the reservation website (very old carpet, dimly lit, quite musty smelling, neither the sink nor shower drained properly, wifi very spotty). It was fine overall, but I was expecting much better based on the photographs. My parents also stayed there and had a much nicer/newer room, so we may have just been unlucky in the area of the hotel we were in.

Wonderful stay from check-in to check-out. The courtyard was a lovely oasis for breakfast and afternoon drinks. The rooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable. Breakfast had everything you needed to set you up for the day. Staff were helpful and professional. The only note for those with mobility problems is there were ALOT of steps and stairs, but that was ok for us.

We loved the property and it's location. Hotel was very well kept and close to transportation. Our room was very nice and spacious. Can't say enough about front desk, everyone was nice and extremely helpful! On the downside, wifi in our room was weak and unreliable. TV cable was worse, I couldn't watch a show to completion because signal from satellite got lost and screen went blank, that's everyday regardless of the weather!!! In this day and age, no reason for either one to happen...very frustrating!! Finally, those stairs to get to the front yard from the street, beware if you're older couple like us.

This is a charming old fashioned hotel. We loved it but if you want super modern this is not for you. Everything was clean, very comfortable bed, fab crisp sheets. Decor a little tired but simple and fine. Breakfast was a feast.
The only down side was having to take a tram or bus into town to go and eat in the evening, but the stop was nearly outside and they were frequent, so we got the hang of it.

More positives than negatives and I’d stay again!

York House Hotel was staffed by some friendly people both at reception and during breakfast where we were waited on very expeditiously. The breakfast itself each morning, we didn’t use the restaurant at other times, was the highlight of our stay. Every morning we came down to a lovely selection of fresh fruit, fruit juice, scrambled egg, crispy bacon and mushrooms or a cold meat and cheese buffet with a good variety to choose from including my personal favourite; smoked salmon.
What let the hotel down for me was that the air conditioning did not work and the front road was too noisy late at night and in the morning to leave the windows open. Finally, but I guess this can’t be avoided, they lovely view across the courtyard is currently spoilt by a huge crane bringing building materials and noise. While we were just unlucky with the crane, I would recommend you ask for a room at the rear and one where the aircon works. To finish on a positive, the hotel is located in Santos and is well served by a choice of Train, Tram or Bus. Alternatively you can opt to walk into the old town which is only 15-20 mins away and you can pop into the famous Timeout Market on the way!

As others have mentioned, there are three large sets of stairs to get up to reception, but there's a button to call for assistance if you need help with your luggage. Also, there's only street parking nearby and it is often full, so I would not suggest driving.

Pros: location is very close to center but far enough to feel authentic and non-touristy. Large room. Friendly staff. Free Porto wine and pastries. Lots of space to chill and read indoors and outdoors. Good shower pressure. The restaurant next to it (Picanha) is amazing and affordable. Madonna allegedly lived on that street, a few doors down.

Cons: breakfast options quite limited. Lots of stairs and no elevators (not for the elderly or disabled)

I originally booked York House because I couldn't get one more day on the front end of a booking at another establishment. After seeing the property in person, we wished we had done our entire stay at York House. We arrived late (about midnight) and were greeted happily by the night staff. Our room was very clean, overlooking the patio. It was quiet, so we were able to sleep in and a delicious breakfast awaited us in the morning before we checked out. We would definitely return to York house on our next visit. Delightful.

THE only issue for us was that the entrance to the hotel is via a series of quite steep stairs (there are 36 of them - I counted!) and on arrival carrying three suitcases up to reception nearly killed me!! Once you were in however, the place was great - VERY quiet, very classy and very atmospheric. Breakfast was super - didn't try the restaurant for dinner and I would have liked to have a drink in the courtyard but the didn't seem to be on offer. Everyone there was great with us and would not hesitate in recommending the place.

The York House was perfect for our stay in Lisbon. As noted in other reviews, the hotel is tucked back on a quite street and requires a few levels of stairs to get to. This adds to the quiet ambiance of the location and we thoroughly enjoyed lounging on the sweet little terrace located at the entrance. It's a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a cup of tea. The room was clean and quite large and comfortable. We also appreciated the delicious breakfast served every morning which was included in our stay. We did not have time to try the restaurant as the hotel is walking distance from an abundance of amazing culinary options that we opted for. The location is just close enough to the city center to enjoy everything but far enough from heavily touristy areas for some peace and quiet. It was exactly what we were looking for in a location and we would absolutely stay again. I would recommend the York House if you are looking for an authentic Lisbon experience without being in the center of the tourist actions. You can get everywhere you need by foot or a short taxi ride that the concierge will call for you.

Lovely small hotel just outside city center. No lift, and quite a few stairs up to the hotel from the street. Lovely courtyard where we had breakfast which was a good selection of meats, cheeses, breads, fruits, cereals and yogurts, plus hot eggs, bacon and sausage. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Room was simple, but pleasant. Bed was amazingly comfortable and we loved the large slate bathroom with rain shower and hand shower.

Really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again if visiting Lisbon. Hotel staff were excellent - friendly and helpful at every opportunity, with what felt like truly personal service.
Clean comfortable rooms in a characterful building with pleasant relaxing lounges and courtyard, presenting the opportunity to have a drink, eat food from the very good hotel restaurant or just unwind.
Possibly difficult access, from the street up the steps to the hotel entrance, for those with limited mobility.

Charming Lisbon hotel

This is a great little hotel tucked away from the Lisbon city center by about a 15 minute walk or a 5 euro taxi ride. The staff was great and the room was amazing. The hotel has lots of old world charm, but the room amenities are up to date. They have a great little restaurant with a beautiful secluded outdoor patio for dining. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The only downsides are the distance from the center of town and forget trying to park anywhere near the hotel. But, to be fair, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of parking in Lisbon. Also, the room never really seemed to cool down, but the weather was fair during our stay so this wasn't a major issue. Also, you may want to skip the buffet breakfast for 15 euros and walk up the street for a coffee and a \"pastel de nata\" (the official pastry of Lisbon). All in all, I would be more than happy to stay at the York house again.

Excellent Hotel

A small and wonderful boutique hotel in a great location. Staff were very friendly, food and service was excellent. Just close enough for easy access to the various areas of Lisbon you would want to discover but far enough out to be away from the main tourist areas.

Really lovely hotel (formally a convent.)

Great location, about a 10 minute walk to the main square. Hotel staff were all really helpful and lovely. Room was spacious and the breakfast had something for everyone! Lisbon is a beautiful and fascinating city with lots to see and do, will definitely go back.

Nice hotel in quiet yet convenient area of Lisbon

I would describe the hotel as styled shabby chic. The room furnishings were old solid dark wood so lots of character. Quite dark inside the hotel but in the heat that is often welcome. Large clean room, comfortable bed, plenty of sockets and decent wifi. The shower was hot and strong but a little unwieldy; I felt guilty for soaking the bathroom everyday! Breakfast was nice and plentiful. The staff were very friendly, helpful and mostly spoke excellent English. Although I didn't make enough use of it the hotel has an amazing courtyard area with beautiful plants - very pleasant for al fresco breakfast or relaxing at any time of day. Lots of steps so not the best for the less mobile (although porters are always on hand). All in all, I really enjoyed my stay and would recommend it.

Beautiful and characterful hotel - a real find

I knew it was going to be a good holiday as soon as we found our way up to the lovely courtyard at the heart of York House. The room and bathroom were immaculate and well sized for a standard room. The staff were helpful and we heard good reports about the food, although didn't eat there ourselves as there are so many lovely restaurants and bakeries nearby. (This is helped by the location - easy walking distance from the centre but more residential and away from the tourist traps.) Only v minor criticism was the noise in the corridor every morning as the internal soundproofing wasn't great, although no street noise. Small price to pay for such a characterful hotel. Will definitely return.

I don't understand this meaning. impossible hotel

When I arrived at York House at noon, my room was not ready. So I was brought to the toilet located in the other side of the main building with the reception. Then I was locked in the toilet for two hours. Nobody heard my help voice and noise (hitting the wooden door by heavy metal toilet cleaner). I was in dehydration under my usual high bloodpressure. Normally the hotel guest does not use this toilet, because one walks through the garden to the other building with the toilet which has one door at the corridor and the second door to the toilet without the window, and it was enclosed by stone wall.
There is one key which is not broken, but the knob locked the door from the outside. Both of them are very old, and it is not possible to use such a dangerous key system.
This hotel former cloister is situated in the second floor (I mean, the groundfloor, the second floor and the third floor) only with steps, so a porter broke my luggage digging over the 50 or 60 steps. They should build the elevator. The handle and the plastic cover near the wheel were broken. I noticed them aThe service was good, but I had terrible expet the airport. On the whole I never had such a terrible experience in my life being locked in the toilet for two hours. You should not recommend this hotel,especially no elevator and carrying guest's luggages walking the steps to the second floor.
I paid my rooms by visa card directly at the hotel, thus I hope you don't charge me ?

This hotel is not for anyone with any physical infirmities, or issues with walking. The entrance is up 2+ flights of stairs, a bit of detail missing from the information given in the website. We were able to deal with this fact, but others should be aware, no matter what Fodor's, or other travel sites, recommend. The room pictured in the ads did not match the room we were offered. Service was not a strong suit of this hotel. It was, however, very quiet, and we were able to navigate the old, uneven pavement of the old residential section to find our way around the city, once we were acclimated to it!!

unique charm and comfort in inconvenient location

This hotel is located in what was once a 17th century convent, and it still has the thick stone walls, circuitous passages, and charming courtyard. If you love older hotels with unique character, York House is for you. Our room was very nice, simple but comfortable, and exceptionally quiet, and the excellent breakfast buffet was served in the lovely outdoor courtyard. The staff was helpful, and had reasonably good English. The courtyard also provided a shady restful haven from the busy gritty city. However, the location of the hotel is a drawback, since it is about a mile from the down town center in a dockland area (near the Art Museum, but little else). An unpleasant walk, but easily accessible by bus, tram, or taxi (though one taxi driver could not find it). Also not a good choice for anybody who has trouble with steps, since one needs to climb up to the hotel from the street. I loved the York House, and would happily return, but my husband wishes that we had been closer to the historic center of Lisbon.
