The Johnstown estate hotel has some great features and some things that need improving. Firstly, the bar and restaurant staff are great, some of the best Ive expereinced in an Irish hotel over the last few years. The food is very good and the lobby area was lovely and spacious to sit and enjoy a drink away from the main bar. While it was busy there was room for everyone. However the leisure area, pool etc was too busy and there was no supervision or staff watching the pool. It meant that a group of young lads took over the jacuzzi for an hour and noone else could use it. It could do with sone TLC. The hotel in general was way too warm. I know thsts a hard thing to control but with no air-conditioning my sleep was not great. I would still recommend this hotel and had a lovely time here.

When we arrived we were told we had been ‘upgraded’ to a lodge. Upon entering the lodge and looking around we decided it was not in fact an upgrade. Although there was more space for us, we were looking forward to a hotel experience. If we had been told in advance of our change of location we could have brought some nibbles, bottle of wine etc to enjoy the lodge more. The bathrooms were fusty and the bedrooms outdated. We also learned we were responsible for washing dishes and bringing out the rubbish bins- not what we had in mind for our night away. Accessing the restaurant and the leisure facilities the next morning was also more of an inconvenience due to the extra journey from the lodge- in the rain. Breakfast was ok, very very busy which did not make for a pleasant experience. It would have been better if guests could book a slot for breakfast to avoid the over crowding. Overall it was nice to get away for the night with friends, however we had hoped for a more pleasant experience. Don’t think we will be back!

Booked for a spa break - arrived and the spa hadn’t remembered our booking. They were very polite and apologetic, gave us a free lunch. The thermal area was busy - just felt we were in a conveyer belt. Had booked this hotel as the new parterre cocktail bar is very appealing after our spa - so our spa appointment was cancelled then there was no access to the parterre bar due to a private function. I had contact the hotel directly prior to booking our spa break and they said no reservation was required. No one at reception had informed us of the parterre bar being closed for a private function nor did staff advise to reserve a table for dinner, We sat outside enjoying the sunshine. At 8 we joined the queue for dinner- where the hostess told us to sit at the bar and it was our responsibility to come up to her Frequently to remind her to seat us for dinner. We sat at the bar surrounded by empty glasses. The whole bar was covered in used glasses. We noticed an empty table behind us but was told by the hostess it’s not free. 40 mins later a waitress passing offered us the free table. Service was poor , staff are so lovely but obviously need training. No cutlery no napkin , food was poor , we were so underwhelmed we decided not to have the facial the following day. Our girlie catch up was a let down. The room was beautiful and clean . The bed and pillows were so comfy- we slept very well. Unfortunately when trying to cancel our facials spa staff wanted to charge us €140

Quiet Luxury, not too far from Dublin

Great place to unwind after a week in rural Ireland. About 40 mins from the airport, we enjoyed the quiet & luxury. There is a walled garden & walk thru the woods just beyond that are worth checking out. \"Two Bedroom House\" that we stayed in feels like an upscale condo, nice bathroom, but be aware 2nd bath is a 1/2 bath on the 1st floor

\nDisappointing Experience–Not a 4-Star Hotel Stay

I was really looking forward to a relaxing stay, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations. The steam room was completely out of order, and the sauna tripped twice and never reached a proper temperature — not ideal for a spa break.

The food itself was fine, but the overall experience was frustrating. The dish I ordered wasn’t available, and when I ordered something else, I was given the wrong meal — with no cutlery provided. I went for breakfast at 10:30 and all the pastries were gone. I asked staff if more were coming and was told they were, only to find out 10 minutes later — after asking again — that there were none left. I made a complaint, and although I wasn’t charged for breakfast, the response was far from professional. There was no apology — just a cold and dismissive “don’t worry about that,” which felt more like being brushed off than acknowledged.

On top of that, the Netflix service — which was advertised as part of the room amenities — wasn’t working at all.

This was not the 4-star hotel experience you would expect. Too many issues for the price paid. Staff were polite in general, but the overall service and experience were disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Unfortunately this stay was not as we had hoped, room size was decent but bed was very uncomfortable (it felt like we slept on plywood). Couldn’t fault the breakfast food, but the service was very slow, ordered pot of tea, which we had to repeatedly ask for and it eventually arrived once we had finished our breakfast. We would not recommend eating in the coach house restaurant, the service was extremely poor mostly down to being majorly under staffed, and the food was terrible. The fish and chips were basically overcooked oven ready-meals, and the Caesar salad came with chicken that was so hard it was mistaken for being croutons.

Overall, it was overpriced for the quality we actually got for the 2 night stay.

We had to sleep & dress with the dressing gowns on. Asked twice for someone to help eventually sorted late, it was morning before the room got warm. Very dated room.

The hotel was very warm throughout it was hard to sleep. The bed was done and the mattress leaned to one side. The food was really bad, we had to send it back. Ordered veg curry and they brought chicken, they changed it and all I got was a watery curry sauce full of onions and the rice was clumped together. The restaurant manager Shona was very attentive though I have to say. The pool and gym were nice and the cocktail bar was very good and the two Greek bar staff were super. The bar was quite dirty and dusty everywhere.

My husband and I went here for a staycation to enjoy the spa, and we were very impressed with that aspect of our visit. The spa was amazing—exceptionally clean, and the staff were fantastic. Both of our massage therapists were wonderful, and we couldn't find a single fault with the spa or its team. The restaurant also had good food and attentive staff. However, the room was a major letdown, especially considering the hotel markets itself as a 4-star property. While the room was spacious enough, there was no water provided, even for a fee. The bathroom was outdated, with a very small shower and a door stopper inconveniently placed at the shower entrance. The TV seemed to be at least 15 years old, with limited channels and no option to cast from our phones. The bed had noticeable lumps at the bottom—something that didn't bother me personally, but could be an issue for others. Breakfast was another disappointment. You had to pay extra for a barista-made latte, or settle for the free machine-made coffee. The orange juice wasn't freshly squeezed but dispensed from a machine. While I would return to enjoy the spa, I wouldn't stay at the hotel again unless it undergoes some updates.

Walking trails were great, especially for the kids.
The bar food was a little limited, but the afternoon scones were to die for. Pity I only discovered them on my last day.
Only complaint was the storage/drawer space in the rooms. We were there for 10 days, and had to pile stuff in the wardrobe.

The hotel looks lovely and the room was nice but the staff are so badly trained - in particular the staff in the bar where we ate. Waited forever for order to be taken, food to come, then wrong food came… and no management to escalate to. Breakfast needs to come into the modern world too - not everyone wants the fried food breakfast! The Spa was the saving grace….

I was disappointed in tge good we ate in the bar and waited 30 minutes for food and then was told they ordered the wrong food we would have to wait another 20 minutes. I was also disappointed not to use the rooftop pool I didn’t realise you had to hook it and wasn’t aware of the cocktail bar till we were leaving.

I stayed one night, hoping to relax after a few days on the road. Condition of the bathroom was poor- mildew in the shower. Hairdryer was attached to the dresser so barely could get to the mirror. Most disappointing was that the hotel gym and pool was flooded with locals- there was literally no room for me to enjoy the facilities. Tried to order room service and they didn’t pick up the phone after a minute. In summary, close to the Highway and pretty outside but the guest experience inside was quite lacking

We enjoyed everything about Johnstown Estate! Such a relaxing atmosphere. So grateful for easy parking and the helpful staff. Absolutely beautiful grounds and excellent accommodations. Very friendly people. Enjoyed our first Guinness in Ireland at The Coach House. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer. Highly recommend, but give yourself a few days to really enjoy!

The check-in staff was excellent, but the check-out staff was not so much. The meal we had at the property was excellent, and so was the server. The room did not have a luggage rack to put luggage on, and the room was pretty stuffy upon arrival. With no a/c, they should have opened the windows before arrival, as it takes a while to cool it down.

Great place to stay, beware short staffed

Overall the hotel is clean, has beautiful facilities and a great location. The food is tasty in the dinner restaurant, and there is plenty to keep one occupied for a restful and relaxing stay.

That being said, for a 4 star hotel and the price paid there were a number of hiccups.

1) Hotel was crazy busy for the May bank holiday weekend and short staffed all the way around

2) Check in time was supposed to be 4pm and there was a line of people arriving - but rooms were not ready. We ended up being sent to bar to wait (they took our luggage) - which was also packed full.

3)After 45 min, our room was ready and we had to wait on bags to be brought up. This delay cut into the time we had to use the leisure centre and saunas before they closed at 7pm (got there at 6 instead of 5). That was disappointing.

3) Dinner that night took 3x asking to get a pitcher of water and the cocktail menu, food came without cutlery (2x asking) and then had to ask twice for the bill.

4) upon check-in I gave my card to put on the room so we could charge dinner / room service and not need to carry handbag etc. When we went to pay, and asked to charge to the room - the card hadn't been opened/put on the room. This meant one of us had to wait with the server while the other had to go get the card to pay.

5) wait staff needed better trained. We asked for tea, they brought that but didnt bring the sugar/milk to go with it. Asked for sugar/milk and they didnt bring a spoon...

Hotel was okay. I find it difficult to justify having to pay extra for a cappuccino at breakfast - this rankles.
Spa was poor - laconicum was dirty, stale standing water and foul smell. I brought it toi the attention of staff and they proceeded to dry the floor with towels. The same towels that spa users are given on entry. No mopping of cleaning of the facility with proper disinfectant.

Stayed here for work 2 nights last week. Arrived late first night and staff on check in were very accommodating. Nice hotel, nice staff but a few oddities for a four star hotel. I tried to charge my evening meal to the room and the waiter told me they were not allowed. Hotel had a copy of my Mastercard credit card? At breakfast if B&B has not been included at point of booking, then you must pay in the restaurant. Again can't charge to room. Also if you want a latte etc with breakfast , this is an extra charge. For a four star hotel, I wouldn't expect these add on charges. Also there is an area of the car park which is fee paying? Again, a little odd for a 4 * located in the countryside? No problem in staying again, food was nice, its clean and comfortable but the charging needs to be more seamless.

I have stayed here before and it was excellent. It did not disappoint this time either. The breakfast was very good and the serving staff were very helpful and friendly. My wife used the pool and said it was spotless. The only issue I had was that they had no craft beers, which they used to have.

Me and my husband thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at The Johnstown Estate - such a lovely setting and the staff were super friendly. The recently renovated spa is unreal (not included in your stay but well worth the extra to enjoy).

The access to the leisure suite was great as well - outdoor hottub, pool, jacuzzi and sauna - I hadn’t realised there was as much to it. The booking in for 90 minute slots due to covid was super easy and we always got the time we wanted - this meant it was never too busy which was a bonus.

We had dinner at fire and salt one evening which was super tasty - my only negative is that it is a fixed menu meaning you had to get a three course meal even if you didn’t want it. But I could not fault the food or the service - every course was amazing!

Overall the stay was great and I would definitely visit again

Excellent place to stay. The staff were very helpful. The Spa would have been excellent but unfortunately was booked up.
Beautiful grounds and beautiful setting ideal for couples.

Overnight at the Estate

Really enjoyed our stay. Room was luxurious with our own Nespresso machine which was much appreciated. Grounds looking fabulous. Breakfast and dinner offered great choices and were lovely. Staff very friendly helpful and courteous. Hotel v well organised wrt COVID health and safety.

Check in was very slow
Executive room 324 looks straight at a wall
Staff in the bar were very poor and very little social distancing going with on 10 people behind the bar at 4pm
