Choosing to stay here you need to keep in mind that it is a 2 star hostel so you can't expect bells and whistles. You have to manage your expectations.
That being said me and my partner found this to be the perfect base for our Byron Bay stay. We stayed in a private cube double room and to be honest it's everything we needed. We've stayed in 5 star hotels before and I can honestly say the bed in this hostel was one of the comfiest beds we've ever slept in! We had a fridge to store food and drink & even a kettle with tea, coffee & milk. Please be warned the rooms are not air-conditioned but we did have a big fan on the wall that helped massively! We can't comment on kitchen/ cooking facilities as we did not make use of these. Bathrooms are perfectly functional but could do with some tlc and a more regular cleaning schedule. We made sure we took antibac wipes in with us every time & always where you flip flops in the shower lol! The room was overall clean but could have definitely done with a deeper clean such as upholstery clean & walls/skirtings/Windows. Overall we had a lovely stay here and found the staff super friendly and helpful!

Shared kitchen and bathroom facilities were very dirty.
Fan broken in room- we were provided with a second standing fan however could not have both fans on due to position of plugs, no one came to fix ceiling fan.
Parking not guaranteed in hostel car park for guest which was not told to us, we parked in what we thought was overflow which resulted in a $330 fine. On arrival no staff member advised which car parks to park in or asked if we even had a car.

The Cube double rooms are a great budget alternative to the dormitories to have your own space, security and privacy. Fridge and tea making facilities included in the room.
Convenience of a shared kitchen for food preparation.
Plenty of communal areas and activities to enjoy.
Staff were friendly and helpful.

Haven't been to the Arts Factory for quite a few years now. Love the place, its uniqueness in the vanilla of the modern Byron Bay, as well as its proximity to beaches, town etc.

The staff were a mixed bunch, the lady that checked me was awesome, friendly, competent and welcoming.Other staff were a mixed bunch with some having little interest and others being somewhat rude.

The joint is also looking a bit run down compared to what it was years ago.

Would I stay again?, possibly, I hardly spent any time there as I was working at the Mullum Music festival, so if was living the backpacker ( as opposed to traveller) dream perhaps I would stay again.

A really cool hostel but unfortunately a few areas letting them down. The staff are great, welcoming and helpful. The hostel itself is a super fun space. Super cheap and affordable. And a near spot to Byron.
However it does not attract the best guests. We found people did not respect the space or other guests. The kitchen area was disgustingly dirty. The 10pm noise curfew was ignored and the pod next to us raved with loud speakers until 2am when we had to personally tell them to turn their music off, after they had been told off by staff several times previously with no consequences enforced. The travellers were generally unfriendly and hostile, which is a shame as could be a brilliant vibe like other hostels if they could implement some new rules or stand up for the place and enforce them.

ew! worst place ever stayed nothing about it was nice, the bathrooms were vile plasters, mud and hair all over the floors. the room didn’t have an aircon so it was like being in a sauna there was a fan in one corner that you couldn’t move and it just blew out hot air, the bed was rock solid! the kitchen was a mess! if you have a car the parking lot was full of pot holes! it’s about 20 mins walk to the beach

Myself and a friend decided to stay in the Arts Factory, for a two day stay in Byron Bay. We have been travelling Australia for 4 weeks at this stage and when we turned up we received weird looks, I assume this was due to not looking a certain way, and having suitcases. The hostel is located among a significant amount of greenery (almost forest-like) and is at the end of a road with no street lights, which is very unnerving when walking home late at night. As a result, a car leaving the hostel during the night proceeded to beep and scream at myself and my friend when we were walking home alone in the dark.

We stayed in the Cosy Corner, and this was a private room with a sitting room attached. Upon checking in, we noticed that this room was unclean with chewing gum on several walls, dirty sofa, dirty curtains and a bathroom which had mould and no hand soap present.

When we entered this room, someone attempted to open the sitting room door, which was very unsettling and the curtains do not close properly, leaving you visible from the bed.

This level of cleanliness followed into the shared bathrooms, which were covered in urine.

We made the decision to vacate the hostel a night early and rearranged our trip to leave Byron Bay, a day earlier, as this experience tainted our view of Byron Bay as a location.

Luckily, the manager agreed to issue a refund for this extra night which we did not stay, which was appreciated. However, I would not recommend staying here

The forest setting was beautiful but the filth especially in the way that soiled toilet paper was visible on a tour that I took of the camping area. I was trying to run away from the horrible doof music that was playing on my first night there. It was a shame to spoil the quiet with such rubbish. The last night music offering was better. The staff were willing to refund me my money but last minute didn’t so I had to put up with an isolated filthy place. I will not be booking accommodation with you again !

Filthy, disappointing, not worth the money

Reception staff were friendly & helpful, location was pretty good but for the price there are so many other places closer to town that would cost around the same. The hostel was filthy, the floors were covered in dust & dirt constantly, the bathroom was cleaned once in the week we were there, the kitchen was absolutely disgusting, bins overflowing, old food sitting out stuck to the sides & dirty plates and pans just sitting in the sink… it would have been fine for a night or 2 but after that we were fed up. No aircon as advertised - just a fan in the room stuck facing the floor… the lights didn’t work in the room either! Wifi barely worked & in the room even the 4G signal was poor. Pool wasn’t cleaned once in the week we were there & full of leaves & debris. Other guests left empty cans/bottles/rubbish around in the communal areas so it was difficult to enjoy the creek view being surrounded by mess…
Hugely disappointed as I was looking forward to Byron Bay but the hostel kind of ruined it for me…

My ONLY issue... I could not get Telstra phone or phone internet to work in my private room (9 downstairs), not in most common area either
Only in the carpark.... so as I was WFH 0700 - 1500.... I spent most of my time in my van & not the room I paid for

After a long series of lockdowns I was going a bit stir crazy, so a quick and close getaway sounded like a great idea. I arrived to the Arts Factory and instantly I was surrounded by a breath of fresh air. The warm welcoming community spirit of the backpacker community whisked me away and transported me to the times of international free travel. Once again I was socialising with people from all over the world, the most kind hearted, considerate and accepting group of people who are still living the dream. I recommend anyone who is sick and tired of dealing with the opinions, politics and restrictions of this pandemic go book yourself in and embrace the individualist yet accepting culture that the people at the Arts Factory have retained.

Interesting vibe, lots going on at the lodge and can see why it’s so popular.
We had a private room with tea & coffee and it was pretty nice.
The bathrooms were not in a great state which you’d expect from a busy hostel but 2 blocked toilets for a good portion of the day.
One fridge was out so everyone’s food was crammed into the two remaining ones, not helped by leaking liquids on the top shelf running into everyone else’s food, but that’s more a guest comment than the hostel.
The staff were great and it was awesome to have a shuttle to the bus stop!

The double rooms on the ground floor had little natural light and were very narrow. The opening of the room door was very cumbersome to open with an app and mobile phone. The app often did not work because the WIFI reception was very bad. The manual code entry was bad. But the Pool was awesome.

A cute, homey and cosy community

Stayed for 3 nights as part of a solo trip. Overall stay was great! Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Lots of fun activities everyday, open space, kitchen area and awesome pool. Stayed in a 6 bedroom dorm, smaller than expected but the bed was super comfortable. I didn't sleep too well the first night as it was really cold but the reception is happy to provide extra comfy blankets for free.

In terms of the cleanliness - its not as disgusting/dirty as some of the other reviews claim and is pretty much what you expect from a backpacker hostel full of young adults. The workers do a great job of consistently cleaning the toilets and showers every morning.

My biggest complaint would be the noise levels at night, but again its to be expected with the Byron night life/party scene and isn't necessarily the hostel's fault. Also, its a 10 minute walk from the town but they do provide a shuttle service in the day.

Overall a great stay and would recommend as an affordable place to stay with good vibes!

The Expedia site said there was a hot tub , THERE IS NO HOT TUB , the shower drain clogged up and I had water filling up the shower floor like a bath tub all

I was told I could stay for $15 a night if I pay a week stay on check in , then when I checked out and confirm the $15 per night for 7 nights stay 2ic said no that’s wrong and I had to inform her I was told this on check in. That when I went to go check out and explained all this to the 2ic she had a rude attitude about all this and said what do you expect me

will never stay again and would not recommend to anyone, I usually do reviews but I can’t do one on this place as it would be a bad review And I rather talk to 2ic so they can improve on these things

I had booked a twin room that had a fridge, upon checking in and going to the room it had a double bed. We were able to get moved into a different area with two beds which was like a permanent tent structure, but with no fridge. Aside from that the overall stay was good, cleanliness isnt paramount however for the price it was clean enough for me. There is a great atmosphere with lots of people in the communal outdoor area or around the pool, however it was never so busy there wasnt enough space for everyone. Town is a 10 minute walk away, and I believe they offer a shuttle service if needed.

It was hot in Bytron and subsequently, the dorm room was really hot, despite a fan from the roof and portable fan as well. Room needs more power points. Overall it's the people that stay and the vibe of the staff make the place. Also the cafe on-site is great (get the pancakes!), saves you from walking into town and you can get stuff there until midnight.

For a couple of OLD backpackers! Very convenient.

We booked a night for convenience to the Byron Bay Brewery as our friends band was playing there that night. It's a 1min walk to the venue. The last time i stayed at this hostel was in the 80's when i was the age then of the majority of guests now but hey, as i said it's very convenient.
Things don't seem to have changed much in those 30 odd years!!
We had a double room which was a bunk bed, double on the bottom, single on top. It was comfy, the sheets crispy clean and towels (also provided) were clean, fresh and soft. The room was small but had everything you would need....fridge, kettle, fan, safe, hooks to hang stuff and a bed lamp, so no complaints there.
Unfortunately there were only shared bathrooms and i can't say the same about them. The bathroom was old and dirty with many mosquitoes! I would say with the amount of guests using the shared facilities they would need a full time cleaner. Not just a quick mop! But having said that the showers were hot with plenty of pressure. Just a shame they're not a bit more environmentally conscious, having old shower heads and not water savers was disappointing.
There's a nice pool and a party vibe and plenty of activities on offer if you so desire. Bit noisy but by the time we got back to retire around midnight it was mostly quiet and we slept well. They even left you little bags with earplugs :) nice attention to detail!

Arts factory is perfect for the under 25s if you are older than this do not stay here! On our first three nights in Byron we chose this hostel as it looked fun and cool we booked a private room so we could have some peace and quiet but also hang out and meet some new people/travellers like ourselves. The room was small but clean and had everything needed for a 3 night stay however there was no window over the top of the door and the noise was endless! The weather was quite bad while we stayed and even though no one could use the pool there was horrendous piped music playing from about 8am to 8pm every night. From our room we could also hear separate music played at reception couple this with almost constant drumming it was pretty grim. At night it got worse with loud music in either the hostel itself or in the brewery across the way blaring until midnight meaning there was zero chance of being able to relax or sleep until it stopped. They have signs up all around the place saying no noise after 10pm which is completely negated by the brewery across the way. Fine if you are 18 and this is your first experience of travelling I can see the appeal not fine if you’re 25+ and want to go to bed before midnight!

Iconic, magic and a bit grubby round the edges

It’s iconic and it’s still has some of the magic but it’s very grubby. Just because you are a busy, party, soulful hostel doesn’t mean you need to be grubby. However the service was faultless, the attached bar and brewery are excellent. The shuttle bus is great. The coffee in the cafe is excellent. It’s loud and busy and fun and been there forever - just nit fancy or schmick, and some hostels are now!

There's no window that can close - there's just a flywire screen so can hear absolutely everything. It would be good if there was the option for a window that actually closes. Also the curtains are really thin and you wake up with the sun particularly on the top bunk as you're right under the window. Would be good to have thicker curtains so you could have a bit of a sleep in. Rooms really dusty and need a deep clean. Someone was knocking loudly at 6am because they were locked out of their room which woke everyone - and it wasn't another traveller it was one of the staff which is disappointing. Check in and check out procedure very long. Otherwise good place to meet people and good facilities. Comfy beds. Short walk into town.

Overall a nice place if you're on a budget in Byron Bay or if you're a solo traveler. The walls in the cube rooms need a bit of sound proofing though, pretty hard not to hear the nearby noise near the pool and carpark at night when you're trying to sleep!

I have stayed here a few times, always fun and cheap. Nice location - just a 10min walk from the main part of Byron and they even have a shuttle bus which goes to and fro all day and night. Staff can be super nice but sometimes they seem a little annoyed - probably because there's often a bunch of young people getting drunk about the place - but still, most of the time everyone is lovely.

Didn't realise how noisy it would be :/

Was noisy until 1am. On a Monday night. This is a party place. Do not stay unless you want to party. Like really, really want to party. Receptionist at the desk (older guy at night) was very unhelpful and did not care to help at all. Receptionist during day (girl with accent) was wonderful, helpful and friendly. Do not ask the guy for anything. No point.

What do you expect for a backpackers

Cell like room constantly lit by outdoor lighting & insufficient window coverings, the zero noise tolerance from 10pm obviously referred to staff only as we didn't hear a peak out of them as the party goers revelled! Perfect for the under 22's, what were we thinking?!?

The hostel is a long walk into town and far from the beach, combined with the fact that the \" single room \" is very spartan(think prison cell)for a 90 bucks a night,then I would recommend to look elsewhere for accommodation for your stay in byron .

I only stayed for the one night. However, it was nice being away from the main town in a quieter location. Friendly atmosphere. Awesome brewery next door. Room was fine, bed was comfy and other guests weren't too noisy when I wanted to sleep.

Hmmmmm

Doors slamming all night. It was party weekend with schoolies. The scene doesn't compensate for being away from the shops and the beach.

Lovely during the day...no sleep at night

The setting, staff, location are all wonderful...but if you're looking for a good nights sleep...keep looking! The music and other guests movements are quite noisy...I had ear plugs in and a pillow over my head but still struggled to sleep through the noise.

A little hippy commune

The rooms were pretty small and music goes on till late at night, but I enjoyed the atmosphere of this little hippy commune. There is also a huge car park which was a plus.

A hostel that offers a quirky alternative to more well known hostels, the Arts Factory offers good value, amenities and comfort for a range of budgets. Whilst the accommodation is basic, it is comfortable and has a cool atmosphere. Having a cinema and brewery within crawling distance to bed also helps. The staff are really helpful and you come to appreciate them even more when you want a lift back to the hostel at ridiculous o'clock and they are there to oblige! It's a lively place but at the same time we never had a problem with noise when we wanted to get our heads down. Would definitely return!!!!!

A community

Such a nice break from the party hostels in Australia. A small community a 5min walk from Byrons center strip. Its nestled in nature and is quite clean!

Wasn't the best location, out of the way of town. If you want sleep it's probably best not to stay here, people are incredibly inconsiderate and no one tries to be quiet.
Particularly after one night the bathroom wash completely trashed with toilet paper everywhere. Even the cleaner looked disgusted and upset.
No one cleans up after themselves in the kitchen but that's hardly a surprise.
The staff just do not care, are more interested in fitting in with the crowd than actually providing good service.
We had a private room which was also freezing, we did go in winter but there was no window and just a net that had a hole in it, allowing the cold, noise and bugs in.
Wouldn't recommend, I reckon there are far better places in the town itself.

Really cool, laid back relaxing backpackers! Friendly staff and atmosphere! Juice bar and coffee was a major plus! As was having the brewery just across the car park!

Not too bad

The place itself is okay, but the noise. Oh my god. I knew there'd be a bit of noise, but sleep was absolutely impossible. I stayed in a Cube though, so perhaps knew of the teepees further down would be quieter.

Good backpackers

For a backpackers, it's pretty great. Lounge area, computers, pool, beach volleyball court, pub/microbrewery and nightclub next door.
Rooms were fine, comfy beds.

Only thing to complain about was that my mate and I got a \"twin room with shared bathroom\" which was actually just two normal rooms and the one bathroom that the whole complex uses. No real drama there though.

Great place to stay

If you aren't expecting to have a five star hotel feel then this place is perfect. The staff were great. It is a nice distance from the main street and the beach. The rooms were a nice size for us, but we rarely spent time inside as there was so much to do within the Arts Factory and around Byron. The whole place was beautiful and earthy.

Suitable for the young and hippies. Definitely able to meet new friends. The ambience and design of the lodge are very unique. But we prefer something more like hotel-sort with private toilet. But it was a different experience. Can get pretty rowdy outside at times.
