We loved the room we got with the private onsen on the balcony, well worth it. The dinner that we had in the private dining room was amazing, so much variety and they were smaller portions which was nice so we could try everything without being too full. The breakfast wasn’t for us, it was Japanese style and while there was a lot of variety, it included a lot of things that were picked and had vinegar on them which wasn’t for us that early in the morning. The other Onsen they have on the property are also very nice. We really enjoyed the outdoor one in the garden area, and watching the sunrise on the rooftop one was breathtaking. They do alternate the days on which men and women can use these onsen so you may want to double check what is available before you leave stay so you’re not disappointed, or just ensure your room has the onsen with it. The room did feel a bit dated, and when the heat was on this awful musty smell blew out of it. The area around the fridge also smelt musty. Other than that the bathroom had great amenities, and you are provided with your own onsen towel as well.

Lovely stay at ryokan. Probably the biggest building around the area, not much going on outside and hard to navigate unless you are a local or speak japanese. Some staff speak english but google translate will be your best friend. Definitly book the rooms with private onsen, magical experience.

A classic onsen hotel near Ogotoonsen Station on the Kosei Line, about 20 minutes from Kyoto. The property has that old-fashioned Japanese charm — a bit dated in places, but warm and inviting. My room was traditional with futon bedding, which may not suit everyone, but I really enjoyed the authentic experience. The private onsen bath was wonderfully relaxing, and the rooftop open-air bath overlooking the lake was a highlight, especially in the cool evening air. Dinner was a full multi-course kaiseki with excellent Omi beef, and the breakfast buffet the next morning was just as impressive. A peaceful and memorable stay overall.

They offered free shuttle service to the nearest JR stations. Nice quiet area for a hot spring vacation. Breakfast and dinner were included in our package, and the food was fabulous and very authentic. It was my second time returning Yumotokan, and everything had been maintained up to standard or even better. Highly recommended!

I love the staff so much! Super kind, optimistic, and happy people. The amount of different onsens they have are really awesome with an amazing view! You can get a 9 course dinner, and the breakfast is really filling too. I highly recommend getting your private onsen if you have tattoos since they dont allow them in the public onsens. If you have a small one, you have to cover it up. Would definitely come back again:)

Lovely relaxing stay. We booked the Hanare Karoi luxury twin with its own private open air onsen. It was much needed after all the walking so far this trip, we didn't need to go to the larger public baths on the other levels. They provided a shuttle bus from Ogoto Onsen station. The service was great from check in, to the staff at the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. The private lounge and unlimited Haagen Dazs icecream, drinks and juices was a really nice touch. We really enjoyed the dinner and breakfast in our own private dining area, with each dish intricately prepared and presented beautifully, the service was very attentive.

Area of hotel is in Den Den town so lots of options for food and shopping. About 15 minute walk to Namba station and 25 min walk to Dotonbori.
Stayed in the room with the computer's, would recommend if you're planning on gaming all night. Computers arent really fast but it does the job. Vibe of the hotel is a bit dingy and not entirely the same as the photos but for the price its a really nice stay.

This was the most beautiful and hospitable stay that I experienced in Japan. Lovely staff, gorgeous rooms, incredible private onsen. There’s yakiniku across the street if you miss dinner. I love that they offer a shuttle from the train station as well— there’s a free phone there you can use to call them. I’ll definitely be coming back and staying longer next time.

Awesome Onsen. Quick check in. The two open air mineral baths were clean, comfortable and relaxing. The one with the huge lava rocks, natural greenery and small waterfall on the 5th floor was my favorite. On the 11th floor the afternoon and evening it was gently raining and sitting in the Onsen with rain coming down made me feel one with the rain and hot water. The food was awesome, a huge variety and more than I could eat. The room was traditional Japanese and comfortable. My husband and I enjoyed our 10th wedding anniversary at Yumotokan.

Do this was our first experience at a full service Ryokan and Onsen. The size of our room was huge and we loved the bathroom as it felt like being in a spa. We really enjoyed the traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast. There were so many foods that were new to us. We got the Omni beef dinner which was extra and the meat was fabulous! Definitely worth trying. So the only stress was arrival at the train station. There’s a public phone that you can use to call for pick for foreigners but it’s so tiny and difficult to find. It’s literally tied to a string 5 meters from the exit of the tolling station as you arrive.

It’s so nice here the staff are extremely attentive and it really feels like being a feudal aristocrat for a day, with dinner and breakfast as multi course meals in private rooms and staff coming to set up futons for sleeping while the guests are at dinner. Cannot recommend it enough! the surrounding area is charming in a small-town kinda way, but there’s not much to do outside the ryokan. I don’t recommend staying more than one or two nights unless you have a car to take you out to things to do in the area

Great Stay at Otsu

The staff were great in their service, from checking in to checking out. We initially booked a room with an outdoor onsen bath tub but didn’t realized that the shower facilities were also outdoor. Due to winter, our young toddler was unable to shower outdoor and it was inconvenient for us to bring him to the public bath. We expressed our concern and the staff was very helpful and immediately helped us to find an alternative room with an indoor bath tub and shower. We were moved to a higher floor room which was great as it offered a 180 degree view of the lake during the day. Very appreciative of the kind gesture of their staff. Food were great too. We enjoyed the kaiseki dinner, the beef was excellent. Would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone who is coming to Otsu.

Room was japanese style, sleep on the tatami beds which we are not used to. Love the bathroom which was pump with Hot Spring pH9 water. Great place if you are into Onsen. This is located in a village with nothing but hotels with Onsens. There is not even much choice for food around if you are not buying a room with food package. Only store is the Family Mart 5 minutes walk away. Best if you do self drive from Kyoto or Osaka, then you have the chance to really tour around Lake Biwa and the sights of Otsu. Otherwise, just stay in the hotel and room en enjoy your Onsen and Japanese slow life.

This is more of a modern ryokan than a traditional one. 5 star hotel service alll the way from pick up from the station, to check out including shuttle bus back to the station. Food was excellent and creative also served in the most luxurious way; though drinks are not included ( you need to pay extra) .They provided very nice snacks on check in. It is much better in terms of value for money as we paid more for the ryokan in Kyoto and that was 4 star. Will come again if in the area.

If I’m ever in Kyoto again, I would definitely set at least one night here in my itinerary because the experience I had here was amazing!! I booked the Karoi room with twin bed that had an open air bath, its pricey but the entire experience is worth the price and exceeded my expectations! The Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was so delicious and every little detail really makes you appreciate the chef’s attentiveness to each ingredient in your meal. Special mention to the staff who was serving us our food and drinks, she was so friendly and explained the food in English which was very helpful. You get a private lounge on the 4th floor if youre staying in floors 5-7, that lounge with the foot bath with free snacks and drinks was perfect and so relaxing. Overall I highly recommend, this is the onsen ryokan to stay at! Note that the outside exterior looks a little shabby and outdated, needs some renovation, but dont be fooled by that, the inside is very nice and clean. One small mention though that did bring some inconvenience to us,one of the staff who assisted with our checkin provides a sheet writing the times of when the baths on the 5th and 11th floor are open, and when women and men switch during which times and which day. Unfortunately he had told us the opposite of when the women/men were supposed to switch on the day,and the next day at 5am. I ended up on the wrong floor at 5am confused and I had to triple check both 5th and 11th floor to make sure I was entering correctly.

We stayed in a KAROI Japanese style twin room for one night with a semi open air private onsen in our room. The staff were extremely nice and helpful and really gave us a VIP service feel. The KAROI private lounge was amazing with complimentary drinks, snacks, foot bath and massage chairs. Overall my stay here was spectacular only slight downside was it was difficult communicating through fb messaging because on their website if you contact them 2 days ahead of time you can change your breakfast from Japanese style to western. However miscommunication occurred as the staff I was messaging did not understand that this was an option. In addition, at ogotoonsen station did not know how to phone the onsen for shuttle because we didn’t realize you have to add a 0 before 77-579-1111.

The KAROI room is a great experience. Free flow drinks and half board is totally relaxing with onsen in the room. However, the temperature of onsen in room is a bit high though in mid Dec. 2 public outdoor onsen which rotates between male and female on alternate days. Oh yes, Haagen Daz ice cream is available too !

This ryokan was easy to get to from Kyoto Station. They had a shuttle bus pick us up and take us to the hotel. We got the traditional room with private hot spring onsen. I loved the room. It was very big for just two people. I liked the open air bath with the spring water. Since we used the bath in the room we didn't go to the public bath or reserve the private bath. Looking back, I think that I could have saved some money and not gotten the private onsen. Next time I would just reserve the private bath. We had the omni beef kaiseki meal plan. Dinner was excellent. I couldn't be more pleased with our stay. I wish we got to stay longer. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who is looking for a ryokan near Kyoto with a western feel.

Very chill and relaxing hot spring hotel

We got to Ogotoonsen station and got a private bus service for free from Yumotokan, this gave me a really good first impression from the hotel service already. My folks and I were welcomed by an English speaking staff in the lobby, which was very nice and clear. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room with fultons and they had many different tea for us to try in the room. There were four different hot spring locations in this hotel, and they all had beautiful settings. Dinner and breakfast were deliciously made full of surprises. Totally loved my stay here in Yumotokan, cannot thank them enough for their amazing service!

Great Osen Hotel near Kyoto

You can get to the Hotel by the JR line, only 4-5 station distance from Kyoto JR station. Shuttle bus can be booked at advance to get to the Hotel from the JR station and from the Hotel to JR station.

The Hotel is clean, quiet and comfortable which we can extremely relax when you are staying here. There are more than 4 public osen baths for you to choose and even you will have your private bath in your room (in the KAROI room). Food provided in the half-board plan are amazing and delicious while the book keeper is very nice (dining in a box in their restaurant). You can definitely have an unforgettable dining experience here.

The Hotel provides free drinks and bottle water in the room, they also provide full-set of toiletries that you need. You can just go to the Hotel and relax without bringing so much stuff with you. Nice for a refreshing and relaxing vacation.

In all, I appreciate the service of the Hotel staff and love the environment of the Hotel very much. I would definitely stay in this hotel again next time.

Unforgettable experience!!!

Staying at a hot spring inn is a must-do in Japan; staying at the Yumotokan will make it an unforgettable experience. From the shuttle service from the train station to check-out, the service and hospitality of the staff is impeccable. Though modest in appearance from the outside, the interior of the hotel/inn is luxurious. This extends to the rooms and spring areas as well.

Getting the Ohmi beef meal with your reservation is also a must. The Ohmi beef is A-5 quality Wagyu beef. The meal is also served as a kaiseki meal with multiple courses; I had my meal served in-room. It was honestly one of the best meals I have ever had.

Would definitely return; highly recommended!
