What a beautiful experience we had at the ryokan. A perfect setting overlooking the lake, quiet, no noise from the town below. The staff was very kind and courteous, always helpful in assisting us with our questions. We learned about Japanese culture and had a wonderful experience; definitely get the dinner, it was worth it. I highy recommend this place, 10 out of 10. We will certainly be back again next time we visit Japan.

Love that this ryokan had halal meal options! The entire place is gorgeous with a beautiful view of Lake Biwa. Easy to get to (they have a shuttle bus from the train station). If you have a private onsen, just know that the shower is also outside. No other options, unless you use the public bath.

This was an awesome semi traditional ryokan experience. I will drop me style room was exactly what we were looking for to break up other more western hotels stays.
We booked breakfast but not dinner as we wanted to explore the local areas as well. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese breakfast and as I asked in advance for a vegetarian version they accommodated extremely well and we thoroughly enjoyed a hearty breakfast.
While the property itself is a little rundown, the service was amazing, the room was spotless, and the private hot tub was an added luxury.
They also had a shuttle bus to and from the station on command, which proved extremely helpful & professional.
The one negative was that you had to pay an onsen tax on site at checkin separate to the bill already paid. I thought this was quite cheeky given that it’s an onsen hotel and that’s the whole point of coming… there is also no choice - whether you use it or not, you have to pay the tax (only small but principly we were a bit miffed). Also note that if you have tattoos, you can only use the public bath if you have tattoo coverings. I strongly suggest you purchase these from somewhere else instead of purchasing them at the gift centre as they only have one size and one colour.

Yuzanso was the location I chose as a surprise vacation trip for my girlfriend. Placed north of Otsu, it was one of the most perfect places for getting away from the crowd of the bigger city while still being a place of convenience to access other parts of Shiga.

Before coming to the property, I asked many questions about the property and even made a special request to Yuzanso, and they provided 100% to my satisfaction. Once arriving at the property, the staff were very polite and accommodating. Being able to speak both Japanese and English well, they would be able to communicate and help guide guests from all walks of life. The property itself was quite larger than expected. Its vastness, design, and cleanliness really separate it from other properties. You can tell that the management and staff truly do care about making guests feel welcomed.

We stayed on the 8th floor in the Executive Satoyama Room. The room was beautiful, spacious, and very clean. The view from the room as well was absolutely drop dead gorgeous. During the day you can experience the vastness of Lake Biwa and the surrounding towering mountains. And during the night, the thousands of shimmering lights of city reflecting off of the water were breath taking. All of this you can enjoy while bathing in the open air style private hot spring wooden bath that is built attached to the room.

I am now happily engaged to my fiancée, and Yuzanso played a huge role in this. Thank you so much Yuzanso! Would recommend!

We loved this ryokan experience! It had everything we were hoping for. Dinner and breakfast were magnificent, the multi-course meals had us full and pleasantly surprised. We love the private onsen and yukata as well The staff here were super helpful and wanted us to have a nice stay. Most of them can help in basic English, but there were a few who you have to take out the translator for which was not a big issue

We stayed in satoyama room with 5 people, which was perfect fit. We enjoyed our room with the open air bath and shower outside, a living room and the sleeping room. The room had 2 separate toilet rooms. Breakfast and dinner were of japanese cuisine, amazing!! We used the public bath and it was beautiful. Hotel perfect for watching sunrise. It was beautiful view of lake as well. The hotel also had a little arcade and a wine bar and cafe and had massage services. They helped us carry our stuff to them room and during meal times they made our rooms. We had a very pleasant stay!

I am absolutely obsessed with this hotel & will be back for my next trip to Japan. staff were extremely accommodating & helpful despite any language barrier (easily solved with google translate). the amenities alone are amazing & don’t get me started on the breakfast! please be sure to book yourself breakfast for at least one or two days so you can experience it. one of my favorite meals in the entirety of my trip.

Very traditional Japanese ryokan. Vast majority of guests are Japanese and so is authentic but also a bit weird… that’s to say, it doesn’t cater to foreigners.

Can’t decide if the decor is stuck in the 1980s or if this is just Japanese taste. We had one of the fancy rooms with a private lounge and a private bath tub (could fit 2 small people) overlooking the mountain and lake. This was lovely. Public baths were on 3rd floor, but we didn’t use those.

Stayed for 2 days, so ate 2 elaborate dinners and breakfast. All multi course and to Japanese traditional meal etiquette. I’ve never seen so many little dishes. Don’t quite understand the balance of tastes. Loved the wagyu beef and the soup broth with fish. So many elements. This is definitely a place for authenticity.

Can’t say I enjoyed everything I ate, but I appreciated it.

Oh and we slept on the floor.. on traditional bedding. I don’t feel the need to do that again.

Altogether a good experience.

We stayed here for one night… just as something different, as we both have never stayed in a Ryokan before. The Satoyama suite was one of the nicest rooms we’ve ever stayed in. You could tell that it was recently renovated/brand new. It also offered a perfect view of Lake Biwa and the surrounding Otsu area. The open air bath and shower was also a nice touch. We took the train from Kyoto to Ogoto Onsen Station. Once you get to Ogoto Onsen Station there is an area where you can call the hotel and a shuttle is sent to pick you up from the station. It was very nice, especially after lugging our bags around stations all day long. Check-in was super easy; the first question they asked us is if we spoke Japanese. We did not. The person who helped us spoke really good English. Everyone who helped us out was super friendly and accommodating. Since we were also considered VIP because we were staying in the suites we got unlimited free snacks and drinks if we showed our room key downstairs. The only gripe I had was the fact that we didn’t realize that we only paid for breakfast the next morning and not dinner the night we stayed. The only way you can get in for dinner is with a timed ticket which they only gave us for breakfast. They stop serving dinner around 8pm and only begin with room service after dinner is done being served. Since it was a long walk into town from where the hotel was located we had to wait until 8pm for room service. Other than that, the hotel was lovely.

very good ryokan, we had the private onsen and it was excellent. cleaners kept taking away the tatami room's bedding, it was a bit annoying. understandably English isn't their first language but i would expect slightly better business English in a hotel with non-japanese speaking guests. kaiseki was exquisite.

Very spacious and comfortable ryokan to stay. A lot of Japanese local food was served during dinner. We had very pleasant interaction with the two attendants that served our dinner. One lovely elder lady who tried to speak English to us and a younger lady that accompanies her; kept us entertained throughout dinner. Transportation provided to and from the nearest train station. Overall very nice stay. Also offer halal menu.

This was by far THE WORST property I have ever stayed in. I understand I’m in a different country, but NO ONE spoke English not even a tad it was all hand gestures and that would have been ok if everything else wasn’t AWFUL. We checked in at 3 and were on top of hill with nothing surrounding and had been traveling all day. We wanted something to eat before dinner but NOTHING was open until 8pm. They had a gift shop in the lobby but it was mostly food items to take home, i opted for an ice cream. We went back to our room which was DISGUSTING i took pictures that i wish i could load because it was AWFUL we tried to get another room but again there was a language barrier. So 8pm rolls around and we’re ready for dinner... they served me a frozen pizza that was taken out of the wrapper and STILL cold, my husband got some sort on fish oh and we had bar nuts, our bill was 50$! You’re joking me, right !? I honestly cannot stress the fact of how AWFUL, GROSS and OUTDATED this hotel is. NEVER AGAIN

Very easy access as you can call hotel for free shuttle pick up when arrive at Ogoto Onsen Station. It's located in a residential neighborhood & decor is old fashioned. Friendly & welcoming staff. Our room is spacious w/a separate sitting room overlooking Biwako. The private open air bath is very open than expected. Enjoyed the tatami beddings. Public baths are clean & very relaxing. There are a family mart & a noodle restaurant at the bottom of the hill. Take about 20-min walk. Breakfast is great. Overall, we had a pleasant stay!

Great experience. Took the train to Ogoto Ibsen station. There is a cell phone on a chain to contact numberous hotels, don’t need a pay phone. Called the hotel and was picked up by shuttle bus in 5 minutes. Staff greetings and instructions were excellent. We had the private in suite Onsen and kaiseki dinner and breakfast.

Absolutely wonderful stay. There is free pick-up/drop-off from the local station (Ogoto onsen -- you will have to call them yourself and you may need someone to speak Japanese to ask them, I've heard you can ask the station staff to call for you). Definitely do this, because the hotel is located at the top of a very, very steep hill (read: basically a mountain). While this affords gorgeous views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains and town, it is NOT fun to try and hike up! Check-in was smooth and we were personally escorted to our room, where we were given an explanation of the facilities and mealtimes (in Japanese). I believe they have English-speaking staff as well, but it might better to have someone who speaks Japanese with you. Dinner and breakfast were scrumptious. The portions are small, as is traditional Japanese cuisine, but the taste was delectable and presentation was beautiful. We booked a private half open air bath in our room, which I highly recommend doing if you can afford to splurge. The night air was great and the view was beautiful. Our room itself was very clean and spacious. The public baths are a bit small but come with everything needed. You are given a yukata and slippers, towels, etc. There is an outdoor bath and indoor bath. There is also a gift shop on-site if you're looking for omiyage for friends/family. I'm really sad we only stayed one night -- wish we could have stayed a second! Highly recommended!

Spacious room, relaxing atmosphere

Hotel provides a shuttle service to and from Ogoto-onsen station, it was easy enough to contact them using the payphone located just outside the station. They allow you to choose dinner and breakfast timing from a few pre-determined time slots, and of course it was very reassuring to have the option of Halal meals. We had an in-room outdoor onsen bathtub which was nice, and quite an interesting experience. Apart from the small cafe, giftshop and library there's not much else to do - which is kind of the point, to relax and do nothing :)

Honestly the best hotel I have ever stayed at!! The room was perfectly spacious, the bath which overlooked otsu city near Osaka was a dream! The hot springs were very comfortable, clean and relaxing. The food was authentic Japanese so it's very different from the western norm. Regardless I highly highly recommend.

The package that like we chose came with Halal dinner & breakfast. Food wise, you would not be left hungry after both dinner and breakfast. The servings might be small but there were about 8 courses in total (plus rice and desserts!) We had shabu shabu and crab here which were luxurious. The room was spacious. The futon was comfortable too. The staff were very friendly and accommodating too! No complaint at all (:

Quick breakdown, I only had one week to book a hotel and I was looking for a true Japanese B&B.

Staff was amazing and very nice.
Location is 10 minutes (car ride) from JR station. When you get to the station, ask the person in the station to call for your hotel ride. DO NOT attempt to go up that hill with luggage. There is not a walkway. The transport to and from hotel is included in price.
Hotel grounds are large, you can tell that this place used to be very popular.
Public bath is a++ for me. There's an outdoor one and indoor one. Grounds are kept clean.
The highlight for me was the dinner. There was a lot of care put into the food. I had ordered the upgraded meal but Im not sure if I got it. Either way, I really enjoyed the meal. I loved it so much that I may come back! This was my second time trying a Ryokan and I enjoyed this one a lot.
Downside, there is nothing in the area, so if you come here, you come here to relax and bath 3x a day.
We only stayed one night and it was perfect. About 30 minutes from Kyoto.

First off, it was a great experience! The room was Japanese style with tatami mats and the futons were very comfortable (and I can compare it to a not-so-comfortable futon we had at our later lodging). We had the open-aired bath on the top floor so we had a magnificent view of the mountains and trees. We stayed for 2 nights but were out most of the days so we didn't really explore the facilities other than the first floor and bath area which had a sauna, outdoor and indoor onsen. We had the kaiseki ryori twice and I must say it was quite a surprise. The second meal was better in our opinion but only because the first meal had a lot of unique traditional Japanese dishes that we just couldn't really stomach. But our hostess, Matsumoto-san was absolutely the best! She tried very hard to explain to us what everything was, was very sweet and even took our pictures for us. We would go back just for her! Very sweet older lady. All in all it was a blast and we'd definitely visit again if in the area. The shuttle service was also extremely helpful. Just know that you have to call the shuttle to pick you up at the station (there's a payphone at the station for those whose phones are on airplane mode :P)

Just have to give them a ring when you reached the station and the bus will be there in 5 mins. Very convenient. Nothing much in the neighborhood, but you won't have to go out as there are many entertainments provided in the hotel.

Service is really poor. No one can speak proper English. I have to make 2 calls to ask for shuttle bus from station because the staff member couldn't understand English. Staff will put extra charge on your room bill without telling you because they don't know how to explain. Make sure you check your bill before you pay. Only recommend to Japanese speaker.

We chose this Ryokan to have Japanese Inn experience and we certainly had it. Rooms, food and facilities very original. The food was great (dinner and breakfast) for the time we stayed in there. The hot springs are to die for. Clean and comfortable. We went to the Karaoke too and we loved it. In general we had a great Japanese Inn experience. The room is just what we expected with a nice private bath. Again very clean and nicely decorated.
We had a shuttle to the train station. That was a plus!

Room was very spacious and we had a private open air onsen with a beautiful view of the bay. The rooms were very large and had both traditional Japanese sleeping arrangements and also a room with two western style beds. The food for both dinner and breakfast was very good and was already prepared and waiting for us when we arrived to eat. The staff spoke little English but we were delighted with the effort they put to explain all our food dishes and were very courteous. Overall very nice experience! Just make sure to take their shuttle from the station as walking up the hill from the station with luggage is not fun.

Great stop between Tokyo and Kansai

They have a shuttle service to pick up and drop off from the nearby train station. They realized we were first timers and treated us as well as could be expected. The physical infrastructure looks to be from Japan’s roaring 80s, but it's a ryokan, so there are timeless aspects to it. The public spa area was worthwhile, although I'm sure one can find better at the price point if one knows Japan and Japanese language. We had a private tub in our room, which was ideal for our children to enjoy an onsen experience. Overall it was a great time for one night and two days, especially the Muslim friendly option that was perfect for us.

昔からあるホテル？で古さとか感じるのかな？と不安もありましたがすごく綺麗でした。
また　来たいなと思わせてもらえるホテルでした
ただ　部屋のシャワーのあつがもう少しつよければよかったです。

同級生の旅行、6名で利用させて頂きました。
宿泊したお部屋の、エグゼクティブ里山（和洋室）は掘りごたつの和室があり、夜もその部屋でみんなでワイワイくつろぐことができ、楽しい時間を過ごさせてもらいました。
夕食で出して頂いた、鰻のじゅんじゅん鍋も鰻が焼いてあり香ばしく、とても美味しかったです。夕食、朝食ともに沢山の品数でお腹いっぱい美味しく頂きました。
部屋の露天風呂も、大浴場もどちらも最高でした。
機会があれば、また利用させて頂きたいと思います。

フロントの不行届スタッフの教育

この度は残念ながら、良い評価を差し上げられません。二、三十年前から何度も楽しい想い出を頂いたのに大変残念です。
規則もてなしの点で以前より失望の念を抱きました。孫が楽しみにしていたブールが時間的に全く使えなかったことは期待はずれでした。その上今回は何よりフロントスタッフの不行届な思い込み軽率な判断で実に不愉快な思いをいたしました。駐車場の管理体制が事の発端ですが一連対応スタッフの教育に問題があると思いました。部屋でお詫びされ朝食の際心遣いを頂いたかた、全てのスタッフの皆さんを責めるわけではありません。
客の立場に立脚したホスピタリティーの対応教育を経営者の方どうかもう一度心して考え直して下さい。。
アルバムにある三代に渡る雄山荘での過去の楽しい家族写真が空しく思います。
貴社のより一層の奮闘を願います。

Excellent Lake Biwa view on 9/F. The room in 9/F is new decorated and contains modern facilities with Japanese classic style. The private hotspring is good. The Japanese breakfast included is also good.

The bath room should have curtain for guest who is shy. The location is very peacful but no convenient store or any facilities nearby. Need to drive car by 3 minutes to the nearest convenient store.

장점 : 한국인 스태프, 자연관경, 식사, 넓은 방
단점 : 산중턱에 있어서 주변산책 어려움, 근처에 갈 곳이 없음

온천 하나만 봐도 다시올만함, 친절함, 가성비 좋음

房外望湖景，房內有溫泉，可以2人同時使用。因大部份房內都有溫泉，大眾溫泉人不多, 亦可以好好享受。
食物好好，晚上有燒肉早上有燒魚。旅館規模大，多本地人住，有車接送，司機都很好。
沒有夜鳴拉面同冰條之類, 建議在雄琴車站便利店先補給零食再入住。

晚餐，有刺身，近江牛鐵板燒，魚shabu shabu
餐廳會寫好晒名安排你放鞋嘅位置，同埋入座嘅位置都會有你個名喺度

如果怕悶，酒店都有少量嘅遊戲喺餐廳出

如果想夜晚飲酒，又有間酒吧，我哋就叫咗杯呃like嘅嘢飲

我可能大部份人房間都有air Bath，所以我去大浴場參觀的時候，裏面係冇人，係走嘅時候先至有一個人入

我都好鍾意咁寧靜，同埋咁小人嘅環境

1. 温泉風呂付の和洋室に宿泊。　
　家人が大浴場使用できないためにそれを選びました　　
　が、お湯の出が悪くフロントに問い合わせのところ
　「大浴場で入浴できます」との回答。
　だったら風呂付の部屋を選びません
２．夕食、朝食共に凡庸。
　夕食は３種類の卓上で加熱する　鍋物、蒸し物、陶板　　
　焼きで調理して出される品数が少ない。３種類の卓上　　
　加熱の品々で豪華にみえるが、手抜きと感じた。
