f you value cleanliness and comfort, avoid this property at all costs.

This so-called \"hotel\" was by far the worst accommodation I encountered during my two-week trip to Japan, which otherwise included many impeccably clean and welcoming places. From the moment I arrived, the issues were apparent: the entire property was dusty, had a persistent fishy odor, and the futons provided had no washable covers. Instead, guests are expected to sleep directly on visibly stained and dusty futons with only a thin sheet to cover them—completely inadequate and frankly unhygienic.

I immediately expressed my concerns and asked to cancel my reservation due to the unacceptable state of the room. Unfortunately, the managers refused to issue a refund and pressured me into staying, insisting they would charge my card regardless.

After a sleepless night, I was woken early by the sounds of drilling and sawing—apparently, they had decided to begin renovating their dining room without providing any notice to guests. So much for the peaceful countryside retreat they advertised.

I ultimately checked out early, forfeiting the second night for which I received no refund.

Save your money, your sleep, and your sanity—stay literally anywhere else.

Our stay was very nice calmed and relaxed. The onsen was beautiful and very tidy. Unfortunately our room and designated bathroom had a very particular smell and the toilets smelled like urine :( but it didn’t ruin our stay. The host was very very helpful (a bit rushed at times but understandably as he runs the whole place). The food is delicious! You are served a traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner. The host offered a lift to the station twice, if this is the case for you don’t be late like us because being late is a disrespectful act in Japan! (We were 2 mins late, still not a nice thing to do!). Check out is a bit earlier than usual but it was ok, we were charged a hot spring tax per night at the end of the check out which is ok I just understood that was included in the payment (read the facility details) but apparently it was not, We didn’t mind. Overall we found it peaceful and quiet which was what we were looking for anyways.

It is tucked away in the far parts of Kyoto, so I would recommend going here if you’d like to experience a disconnect from the hustle of tourist activities while still experiencing Japanese culture. the location was in a really quiet beautiful area near beautiful temples, it’s a nice walk, and the staff were nice and accommodating. loved that dinner and breakfast was also included, although some rooms had communal washrooms which is not good. to go the hotel is also a hike up, and latest check in is before 8 pm. we had a leaking faucet, and the rooms are really cold at night, but they do provide heaters and warm clothes.

This is a Minshuku not a Ryokan as Expedia markets/lists it as. There is a difference if you're looking for Ryokan please do not book this. With that being said the staff working here were amazing they were very kind and helpful. Once they knew about I had an old injury to my knee they went above and beyond to be accommodating to me. They serve dinner and breakfast with dinner being a hotpot style of soup and breakfast being a traditional Japanese breakfast of fish, miso soup, and rice. The onsen is not private it is shared but divided between the sexes with each side being swapped daily so you can experience each side. There is a small outside bath that seats two which is more exposed to nature. This place is a about a 15min walk from the bus stop and it is at an incline that gets worse the further you go up the mountain. The rooms are traditional with some having a private toilet while others you have to share the community restrooms scattered through the inn. I definitely recommend coming here if you goal is to get away and relax in peace and quiet

The staff and atmosphere was amazing. It is a perfect retreat from the busy streets of the big cities. The food was amazing, traditional, and filling and the baths are clean and enjoyable. The surrounding village is also beautiful. We came during the hot month of September and it was still very enjoyable to be in the hot springs. I would highly recommend the Ohara No Sato to people looking for an authentic, traditional Japanese experience.

Simple accommodation in a charming location.

I was very uncertain about staying here due to some of the other reviews and the difficulty of getting here. I needn’t have worried. This is simple accommodation in amazing surroundings. The village of Ohara is charming, the bus is easy, and the 20 minute walk that others mention is a lovely walk through the village. I admit you wouldn’t want to do it with much luggage (but they will pick you up if you phone). Lovely, simple, segregated outside onsen. Food is amazing.

Coming to Ohara no Sato was the best idea to escape for a short while the hustle and bustle of Kyoto as it is only an hour away from Kyoto and easy to reach. If you are looking for an authentic Japanese experience and want to go back to the beauty and the basics of Japanese countryside it is a really good place to be. I really liked the onsen after a good walk. Also dinner, you make your own hot pot was great as you get an idea what it all contains. Staff although not speaking much English (which is ok) were very helpful and kind. Thank you for this wondeful experience!

The pictures does not match the actual state and condition of the hotel. The hotel was very run down. There was no mention of many stairs, which my parents cannot stay because they could not take so many steps. I have been misrepresented and when I asked for a refund, they refused. Please do what is necessary to get a refund from them.

The accomodation has a great location. It's situated near the local bus stop and near the main attractions of Ohara but you still get the feeling of beautiful countryside. The property itself is really nice and the rooms were wonderfully prepared. We especially loved the onsens, so great for relaxing! The staff is welcoming and they always try their best to help, even though they do not speak english that well, so communication was not an issue. You should know there is only one convenience store nearby, thus it's best to bring your own food (but you can order breakfast and dinner beforehand). We would recommend this place in a heartbeat. Loved the experience.

Misrepresentation from expedia about our room

When checking in we tried to explain to the staff at the quest house that the room they were offering us was not the room expedia booked for us (from your confirmation email) It was on the 1st level with no outdoor area - the room we booked was on the ground floor with a small area with a small garden connected to the room. We booked 3 night originally and tried to explain that we would be checking out after 2 nights as the rom was not what we had booked they seemed to understand however when we checked out they made us pay for the 3rd night - we are extremely disappointed with this and will be following up with expedia to arrange a refund for the night we did not stay.

Lovely ryokan away from the bustle of Kyoto

Ohara no Sato is a traditional Japanese ryokan in the hills above Kyoto. Most staff speak very little English but it is easy enough to communicate. The onset/hot spring baths were very nice (although I have no other experience for comparison) a segregated by gender and big enough for several people in the two pools. I went in August, not a big tourist month, so I pretty much had the baths to my self. The breakfast and dinner were very good - bring your appetite for Japanese food as there is no western option. The ryokan is quite a hike to the main temples, but th walk is lovely. Ohara no Sato is on my list for my next trip to Kyoto!

One must visit the temples and walk along the circular path of the area.
As for the Ryokan - we found it to be quite shabby and tired; certainly the price you pay doesn't reflect the comfort one would expect or aesthetic impressions of the interior.
The onsen in place desperately needs refurbishment and good clean up from unpleasant looking insects and mildew.
The stuff was very friendly and very helpful. The traditional meal offered at the hotel was super and definitely worth experiencing if don't mind subtle flavours of vegetables and meats.
Great area, sadly, wouldn't recommend the hotel.

We were going for a traditional onsen experience and got it at Ohara no Sato. Very old school with no flashing lights or whistles. The area around is beautiful and fun to explore. The bath area was old but clean.

No frills Japanese hospitality with good onsen

The hotel is located in the hills of Oohara and has excellent walking to temples. Lots of places to eat a short bus ride away. The staff are friendly and helpful. Most visitors come up from Kyoto for an overnight or a long day trip. We stayed 3 days and the staff made us different dinner sets each night, normally it is a one pot miso chicken dish. And beer.
The inn will send a mini bus to pick you up at the bus station, but it is a 10 minute walk Without luggage on a walking/ bike path mostly.

The simple accommodations and the surrounding Japanese forest combine to make this a memorable stay. I wish I had booked more than one night! The staff was very friendly and did their best to host us in English. The food was decent and making our own beds out of futons was a fun experience. The outdoor hot bath was very relaxing before bed and at the start of the day.

Place is good to experience Japanese style living but expensive. Food was OK, but not great, after dinner there should have been some desert, sodas, etc. Resort offer pick up and drop off from bus station. Staff is very good and helping in nature. This is in a great location if you want a feel for rural Kyoto. The sights were breathtaking. In terms of the place itself... The food was great, and the rooms could just barely fit 4 people. The onsens were kind of small, but in the end could fit everyone, it seemed. We were troubled by the lack of private showers and one of our quilts had an ominous stain.

I booked a night at Ohara no Sato after reading up on its rave reviews online. While the onsen is located in a quiet countryside; it's not exactly a picturesque place, compared to Arashiyama. There's nothing much to do there, except for hiking and temple visits. To begin with, I find the place rather old. The room is clean but has nothing much else to offer. What I find most disappointing is its hot springs. For a place famous for its natural hot springs, I would expect that the soaking and bath areas be nicely done up. Instead, I find them rather utilitarian - just slightly better than a public bathroom. The indoor hot tub is a drab. There is only one - I repeat one, small round wooden outdoor tub in a garden setting. It's enough to fit only 3 to 4 persons. It's a good thing that I went during the off-peak period, and had the tub to myself for awhile, otherwise I cannot imagine squeezing into the small tub with other strangers!

I enjoyed the rather traditional tofu hotpot dinner.

Awesome place to stay!

This traditional Japanese hotel called a ryokan is the perfect experience for anyone who is staying in the Kyoto area. It's about an hour bus ride from the central train station (30 min by car). There are shrines, temples and many things to see in the peaceful country side. It's well worth eating dinner at the ryokan and trying their homemade miso hot pot.

The staff is incredibly nice and friendly. If you call them in advance, they can pick you up at the Ohara bus station for no extra charge, as well as take you back to the bus station after your stay. The view of the surrounding mountains is beautiful. There is a small temple walking distance up the road, as well as hiking paths into the mountains. There are no convenient stores nearby, so if you don't choose the meal options at the hotel, you have to bring food. Rooms also don't have refrigerators. The hot springs are small, but definitely worth the experience if few people are in there. Bus 16 and 17 take you one hour to the Ohara bus station from just north of the Gion area in Kyoto. The WiFi is fast too. We definitely recommend this place.

Great place in the wilderness

A very nice ryokan in the Ohara area. It is grouped up with the other major ryokans in the area aswell so finding either of them should be no problem. very clean, spacious, relaxing, and friendly service. limited english so be wary. Food is set-up for you but other than that, it is DIY nabe, sukiyaki, etc. Towels and toothbrush are provided for you, washing your teeth might be alittle far and a chore, suggest you mix it in with your daily baths.

The basics in a great surrounding area

Took 1.5 hrs to get there by public bus from Kyoto Station. From bus station to hotel another 15 mins walk. But can also call the hotel for pick up.
Inside is quite basic and you have to make your own bed. Shared bathrooms and public hotspring. Walls are very thin, people next door can easily be heard talking.
Stayed 1 night. Sufficient to explore the area.

You cook your own meal at the table but don't worry the supply very simple instructions. Great fun.
And yes as to be expected for a traditional inn, you do have to remove your shoes on entering and making up your futon bed. It's what it's all about.

Expérience Temples and Ryokans without the crowds

We spent our first 3 of 21 days in Japan at this quiet Ryokan in Ohara just outside of Kyoto, and we are glad we did. It was quiet and the neighborhood was absolutely charming given it was mostly pedestrian. We saw three wonderful temples without the craziness of tour groups and tour busses. But mostly we enjoyed gently orienting ourselves at the ryokan. Not having to think about where we were going to eat was relaxing especially since the food served at Ohara No Sato was tasty and nutritious . The staff was incredibly friendly and offered to give us a ride to the station when we were leaving as it was pouring out. Getting to the ryokan was a simple and lovely 10 minute walk up a footpath from the bus station. We highly recommend this ryokan and in fact are considering returning before we leave the country.

Felt perfect to me!

After spending 5 days in Tokyo, I decided to choose a location more local and more in the heart of Japan and chose this hotel based on previous reviews on Expedia.
It was already amazing to have the drive up there from Kyoto to see such traditional Japanese houses and the culture emerging.
The onsen was amazing, room was small but super comfortable because you make your own futon! It was a great experience and since we went in winter, it was snowing too! It was such a beautiful image to wake up too- right in the heart of nature and Japan's snow.

The rooms are reasonable size, considering you sleep on the floor anyway. Beautiful views so it makes up for it. The tv is super small, so don't expect any HD quality movies or anything. The toilet is separate from the room which can be inconvenient for some people but it's just like back home so it's not too much of a hassle. I think to have the best experience at this hotel, you must go to the onsen and if you don't, it might not be a suitable choice as it is a bit of a travel to get to the hotel. I took a bullet train to Kyoto, then an hour long bus from Kyoto to Ohara. However, staff was nice enough to pick us up AND drop us back to the bus when we had to check out.

Such a great place to stay if you're looking for a place to relax and away from the fancy hotels and contemporary styles. I recommend this to anyone who wants a piece of the heart of Japan with them when they go!

Lovely getaway in the mountains with an onsen!

My mum, sister and I stayed here for a night while we visited Kyoto. It was our first onsen experience. The service was great, the food was excellent. My only advise is to get there before it gets dark and don't use public transport. We got a bit lost as we arrived late and could not find a taxi to takes us from the train station to the hotel.

Enjoyable stay in Japanese countryside.

We had a very nice stay at the ryokan. We stayed two nights. When we arrived it was drizzling and so we called the hotel and they were able to come pick us up. Which was greatly appreciated since its a good 10 minute walk. The room was a Japanese style tatami room and was large enough to comfortably accommodate the three of us. We had to take out and put away our own futons, but that was fine since we knew it was a minshuku rather than a proper ryokan. We actually preferred that since we didn't have to worry about when the staff was coming to take down and put up the futons at night and in the morning. The baths are hot spring. Not very large but enjoyed the outdoor baths in a beautiful garden setting. Meals are taken in large room with other guests. We had the miso nabe the first night and sukiyaki the next. Japanese style breakfast were also included. They were all very good. Not much choice in terms of types of food so if you're not really into miso and other traditional Japanese food, I would not get a meal plan. The second night, the staff offered to drive the guests 5 minutes to a spot where you can see fireflies. That was very nice.

An excellent surprise

I didn't knew I could find such a nice ryokan around Kyoto. This is so much better than all the big boring hotels in the city center! I went there by car, but there is probably a way to get there by train then asking them to get you at the station. Oh, and the onsen outside is super cute !

Expensive for what it offered. Not easy to get to from the Ohara bus stop, but the hotel staff was kind enough to pick us up. Dinner was a do-it-yourself thing, no choices. We had to set up our own beds/futons for sleeping.

客室に用意されているものが整ってなかった。布団が足りない、テレビが設置されてない。コタツのテーブルは上のコーナーの枠が外れていた
何かあればフロントに行くのはわかるが電話もないから何度も階段をのぼりおりして伝えにいった。せめてフロアごとに電話を置くなどしていただきたい。ついてすぐにこんな感じではゆっくりできない。夜の鍋もカセットコンロの接触げ悪く何度も火が消えた、ガスが残っているからチャッカマンを持ってきて何度も着けてはくれだが鍋が冷めてしまい美味しくなかった。3度目でこちらがいってやっとコンロをかえてくれた。接触がおかしいのであれば一度で替えるのが普通ではないかと思う。

We loved our stay at the onsen hotel. It was a great way to see the more quiet side of Kyoto. The hosts were amazing and friendly, they even helped us to get a taxi after checking out. The food was delicious. Everything was prepared fresh every morning and evening and there was a variety of foods to choose from. We definitely will be back next time visiting Kyoto.

Super Möglichkeit, um in einer traditionell japanischen Minshuku zu übernachten und die Onsen zu erleben. Die Unterkunft ist in die Jahre gekommen, aber eigentlich sauber & die Mitarbeiter sind herzlich. Das Essen war auch gut, man sollte jedoch Miso mögen, weil es diese Morgens Abends gibt. Sehr zu empfehlen sind die selbstgemachten Miso-Karamellbonbons. In der Umgebung kann man die Tempel besichtigen und es gibt auch viele gute Cafés. Wir blieben eine Nacht und das war für uns perfekt für dieses Erlebnis & Erkundung der Umgebung.

Utrolig unik opplevelse! Klassisk japansk ryokan! Flott beliggenhet i en gammel japansk landsby, og lett å komme seg dit vedtog og buss. Ca 1 time reisetid fra kyoto sentrum.

大人たちは足が悪く周りの施設を観光できませんでしたが子供たちは到着後すぐに観光に行き楽しんだようです。
私は食前・就寝前・朝風呂と温泉に入り堪能しました。
もう少し時期がづれていたら紅葉が綺麗だろうなと思いました。静かな宿でした。喫茶店が閉まっててモーニングコーヒーができないと残念がってｒました。

When me and my companion arrived Ohara bus station, we informed the minshuku and the staff arrived quickly and picked us up. He was very nice and explained to us what we could do around the small town. It was the season of firefly sighting so we decided to explore the town at night, he noticed that me and my companion was wearing short sleeves and quickly told us to wear a jacket to protect us from insect bites, he even lend us a torch as it was quite dark on the streets. Even though we couldn’t communicate very well in English, I felt the warmth and hospitality of the staff.

As for the spaces of the minshuku, the design is quite traditional, we love it as we could experience the essence traditional Japanese architecture (especially the garden!) The outdoor onsen was a surprise, taking a bath in the nature surrounded by the forest is an unforgettable experience and we really enjoyed it.

We ordered dinner and breakfast, both meals are simple yet full of characteristic, especially their home made miso paste. The dining area is next to the garden, we enjoyed our meals with the sight of nature.

Overall, the whole experience is very homely and the staffs are friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend others to stay at Ohara no Sato or come visit as a getaway from the busy city life of Kyoto and enjoy the beautiful countryside of Ohara.

Incrível a experiência de se hospedar em um ryokan por um dia, e conhecer de perto os costumes japoneses.
O onsen é excelente e bem relaxante.
Eu senti falta de alguém para explicar como se comiam as comidas do jantar e café da manhã, pois eu fiquei perdida, por exemplo, sobre o que fazer com um ovo cru, não sabia que os japoneses comiam o ovo cru com arroz.

青紅葉　私も見てね　大原の里

食事場所は、大広間を使い他の宿泊者との距離を空け、コロナ感染症対策も採られていました。料理も美味しかった。おばんざいも美味しい。

風呂も温泉で露天風呂もあり気持ち良く滞在出来ました。

青紅葉がとてもきれいで秋の紅葉は、どんなに見事か想像を掻き立てられる滞在でした。

お風呂の時間だけが残念だった

コロナの影響で宿泊客が少ないからなのか、大浴場の利用が17時からでした。チェックインしてすぐかお風呂に入りたかったので、残念でした。
翌日は、朝7時半から大浴場利用可能なのですが、朝食が8時半からだったので、慌ただしかったです。朝食後、すぐ10時になり、慌チェックアウトしたのでゆっくりは出来ませんでした。
お客様が少ないので、時間変更されてると思いますが、予約前に知りたかったです。

お食事は満足しています。
おばんざいとお味噌はたくさんあり、お土産にお味噌も頂きました。

田舎に帰って来たようなお宿

大原のバス停からは結構登りで歩きますが、景色が日本の田舎って感じで気持ち良い。部屋は民宿なので、それなりに古めかしい。スタッフの皆さんはとても親切。温泉は夜と朝で男湯と女湯が入れ替えされますから、両方ともおすすめ、ただし蛇口の温度の調節が難しく、熱湯が出るので要注意です。(チェックインの時に説明ありました)温泉は臭いはしないのですが、肌触りが良く気持ちいいです。夕食の味噌鍋もボリュームが有って満足！

思ったより部屋数多く趣のある民宿でした。50代女性の1人旅でしたが、気兼ねなくリラックスして過ごせました。お食事も美味しかったです。寂光院さんもすぐで、チェックアウト前にお参りして来ました。帰りはバス停まで送っていただきました。お世話になりました。

블로그를 포함 각종 후ㄱl보면 ㄱr성B 좋ㄷr는 얘ㄱl가 많아서 기ㄷH를 많ol함..
당연히 오하라니깐 거리문제는 고려ㄷh상에서 제외.
캐리어끌고 걷기엔 경사도man고 생각보다 거리가 meol어서 픽업이 필수적인데,
오하라터미널에서는 공중전화로 가능했음..
근데 그다음날 ㅂl행ㄱl si간때매 일찍ㄱr는 人들이 많eul텐더l, 9시부터만 픽업서ㅂl스ㄱr능.
jo식도 8ㅅl부터만 가능. 단 5~10분 일jjik도 양ㅎh해주ㅈl 않음.
(ㅂl행기때문에 7ㅅl 50분식사, 8시10분 픽업 요청했으ㄴr 단호하게 geo절. 식사는 해줄줄..)
choong격은 여기서 멈추지 않음. 방이 매우jak고 좀 뭔ㄱr zzipzzipㅎh요... 셋이ㅈr면 꽉참.
수납장이 많은데, 옷 수납 공간은 1도 없高, 2불만 한가득 차있음.
1번도 안빨은듯한 오ㄹh된 2불만 가득. 그2불에 씌우라고 흰색천을 주긴하는데 끼기도 him들고, 낀다해도 ㅁh우 zzip찝.
온천은 물ol ㄸr뜻ㅎr지 않고, ㅁl지근.. 그래도 맨위 솥뚜껑에서 온천하는 곳은 풍경은 좋음.
이것도 5zH되서 zzipzzip해요..
온천은 jakㅈl만 나름 봐줄만듯한데, 온천ryo랑 온천水水ryo를 받는다는거임.
당연ㅎl 숙bak료에 po함되어있는줄..?
근데 poham되어있지 않다며 리빽+빽오쓉엔 일in당 총 쐄뽹오쓉엔 쳐받음.
저녁식사는 좋았어요. 뷔페식 반찬도 맛있었고. 야채양도많아요.

작고 조용한 온천 여관

작고 고요한 시골 민박의 느낌이에요. 가족들과 함께 방문했는데, 반찬 가짓수가 많지는 않지만 푸짐한 된장 나베로 저녁을 먹고 온천욕을 즐길 수 있어 너무 좋았습니다. 특히 노천탕의 분위기가 너무 좋아요. 개인적으로는 대욕탕보다 중욕탕의 편백나무 욕실이 더 분위기가 멋졌던 것 같아요. 창문을 열면 들리는 물 소리가 휴양 기분 내기에 적격이었습니다. 호텔이 아니고 옛 시골 다다미방이라 침구 상태나 방 먼지에는 약간 아쉬운 점이 있었지만 관리가 잘 되어서 불쾌한 점은 전혀 없었어요. 오하라에 다시 간다면 머물 의향이 있습니다.

50年ぶりの大原の旅して、雪ではなく小雨がふって苔がほっとしている様子見て、自分も同じ気持ちになり、山に霧が出ているのを見ながら歩いて心がほっと一息ついている自分がいるのに気付きました。
