Beautiful grand Georgian house but a little tired. Spa was branded as luxurious but it was pretty basic and a few things could be easily improved.
Eg. Only 1x shower and no shower gel, shampoo or conditioner. The Steam room was barely working and the chairs/furniture around the pool were not tidied from old wet towels.

The bar room could do with a revamp and the drinks service could be improved.

The room was very comfy and clean but again missed the extra touches like dressing gown, mini bar etc.

Overall the main house was beautiful and really well maintained but simple things like a shabby/modern coat stand and some of the furniture in the cocktail bar detracted from the historic look and feel of the house.

We had a good stay and the staff were excellent but would not say the property is as luxurious as advertised.

Lovely character hotel in very peaceful surroundings. The staff were just lovely , friendly and chatty . Our room was in a good location and it was easy to get to the restaurant , bar and spa . The room was a good size and the towels were nice and soft, the hot water plentiful too. The only slight dent in the room was the condition of some of the fixtures and fittings . The carpet had quite a few stains on it , the shower settings were missing parts and the towel radiator missing coatings . That said everything worked just fine . The breakfast was good and the service excellent, good choice of fruit and juices . Hot food was tasty especially the eggs Benedict . The spa was enjoyable, the pool warm and the steam room and sauna just right . All in all an excellent and enjoyable stay .

The stay was lovely staying in the cottages on site which were really cosy and felt like no way a disadvantage being a 2 minute walk from the hotel, maybe nicer as feeling more peaceful.
The only thing I'd say about the room was that the tv wasn't smart so we couldn't log in or cast using streaming apps. It's not essential but I think a lot of people wouldn't mind going back to their rooms in the evening and watching a film. We were told by Reception Staff that the tv's weren't Smart, so this was across the board.

The breakfasts had a lot of choice and staff were very professional. Unfortunately my friend's scrambled egg wasn't cooked properly and appeared to have been microwaved. The rest of the food that day and next day were fine though.

The Spa has a friendly member of staff and an array of facilities. The only thing that was a minor problem is there is a mixed changing room and only two cubicles, which let us down a bit as we were waiting quite a while for other people to dry and get changed, seemingly oblivious anyone was waiting.

The cocktail bar in the hotel has some lovely drinks from local companies such as Alnwick rum.

Overall I'd recommend staying as the Hotel is stunning and very historic and we wandered around taking photos and got lost in the maze!
I think the gripes around the outdated tv's in the rooms that aren't smart and only two cubicles in the spa slightly undermined the prestige of the hotel as you need to get the basics right.
Would stay again.

Very Faded Elegance

I think this hotel is living on a reputation which expired some time ago. The decor is dated, not everything is as clean as it should be, the room we stayed in, although lovely and quiet it not being in the main building, left a lot to be desired on the electrics front. The breakfast food and staff were wonderful. They are obviously having the same problems as many hospitality venues in that they do not have enough staff but being shouted at by the barman in the cocktail bar to \"come and get your own drinks as I've got a queue\" did not enamour us to him. It's not a cheap place to stay and I don't feel that I could recommend it to anyone at this point in time.

We ended up staying just one night instead of two due to the standard of the room and spa facilities. The room was super rundown; old furniture, marks and stains on everything.
The spa was grimy and also rundown. Nothing like the photos and definitely not luxury.
The staff were super understanding and very helpful and listened to our concerns. However would not recommend staying at Doxford Hall.

Very luxurious and comfortable the only problem we had was the kingsize bed was 2 singles put together ànd the mattress topper did not stop thre being a distinct line down the center which was sometimes a bit uncomfortable. The breakfast gave a great choice amd was vert tasty. The pool was good but closed early 6pm itvwould hzbe been nice to enjoy the facilities

Doxford Hall was in a very convenient location for visiting the area. Although, you do need to drive.
The grounds are simply stunning. Beautifully maintained and relatively extensive.
The hotel itself is lovely. Super clean, traditional, mostly bright and airy and again, well maintained. We had the four poster room which we loved. It was really big and was well organised. It had plenty of sockets, a USB port next to the bed, bottles of water and plenty of hangers etc. The bathroom was large, modern and spotlessly clean with a shower over the bath.
The breakfast was very nice. Not the biggest selection I've seen but something for everyone. It was cooked and served very well. Mostly table service including pots of coffee and racks of toast. We had dinner both nights of our stay as we chose the DBB rate. We ate from the a la carte menu both nights. Every single mouthful was delicious. Beautifully cooked and presented. The house white was good too. There was also a set menu which looked great too.
We only used the swimming pool, not the spa. The pool was a good size for a hotel pool. We enjoyed our swim. The changing room was adequate. Robes and slippers available on request (apparently).
The staff across the hotel were, without exception, all friendly, open, happy and efficient. The hotel never appeared to be short staffed.
We had a great two night stay. I would definitely return and recommend the hotel to friends.

The welcome was was warm and the room large and clean. We had dinner in the restaurant the first night and it was delicious with impeccable service. We had breakfast on two mornings, again food was very good.
Two small criticisms from our stay was that the bed/mattress was very firm but this is about personal taste so may be fine for others! We spoke to reception and while they couldn’t offer a different room they did provide a mattress topper which resolved the issue and we were happy with that. The second criticism was that after we drank the water on the first night, it wasn’t replaced by housekeeping which i would have expected.
Would definitely stay again though we had a lovely time

Hotel was very ornate and a beautiful setting for a wedding. A bit dated and worn in areas but that makes it charming. Too warm in the bedroom and couldn’t turn the bathroom radiator off which provided all the heat. Bed was comfy. Carpets needed to be cleaned. Gym had very basic and minimal equipment and floors were dirty and looked to have not been cleaned for while. Reception staff very friendly and welcoming.

I thought the staff were superb (very friendly and helpful in every way), and hotel, clean, bright and lovely. My only criticism’s are, on arrival, the back of the kitchen is visable, and needs a quick tidy up. The front entrance is beautiful, but the first thing we saw was the kitchen waste, and parked next to a car with flat tyre which looked as though it had been there for many months! The spa/pool area needs an update/made to look more attractive/luxurious……. It is advertised as a spa hotel but we chose not to use this area! Also the bar area a little depressing/unattractive….. there are other areas which would make a great airy and inviting bar area to sit and meet other residents etc. However, overall a lovely stay and with a few easy wins it could be perfect 👌

Wonderful Experience

Absolutely wonderful, staff were most helpful, the setting is second to none, gardens, views etc. Dining in the George Runciman restaurant was relaxed, a really lovely dining experience. Safe, secure parking in the grounds just a short stroll from reception.
If you want to treat yourself to something special then Doxford Hall should be top of your 'bucket list'.

Waiting staff in the restaurant in the evening were dreadful. Very poor customer service. Did not know the wine list. Felt rushed to order. Had to send main course back as it was an insulting portion of cod loin ( two inch by one inch)for £30! No alternative offered as apparently kitchen closed. Manager returned the original dish which had been sat for ten minutes and said he would reduce cost by half price!! I refused the offer and therefore had nothing to eat.
It was my partner's birthday meal so he and our friends ate alone.
We then went to the bar and received equally poor service. The beer was flat and the bar man very off hand and grumpy.
We asked if we could buy some nuts/ crisps at the bar. We were told to go up to the top floor and use a vending machine! We were told we would need to get changed at reception first!
The room was sweltering and we couldn't open the window because the generator outside was so noisy. Air con did not work. Spa bath was not working either.
The staff at breakfast were very professional and delivered the standard of service you would expect for this hotel and price. However the lack of consistency would deter us from returning

Lovely couple of days

we had a lovely stay in the coach house seperate from the main building. It was beautiful. The grounds are extremely well kept. the main hotel is gorgeous
Had a quick peak in one of the bedrooms and it looked lovely.Lots of little rooms where you can find a cosy seat. Breakfast was fab. Staff were lovely. Pool is a decent size. A little bit of chill music would've been nice. steam room/ sauna were fine. Didnt use the spa treatments or have evening meal there. Look forward to visiting again.

A one night treat. Not the easiest place to find tucked away up a small country lane. Could do with more directional signage. Pleasant reception and checking in/escort to the suite. We booked the king Bed Suite ( Langley ). Extremely spacious with large lounge, seperate bedroom, bathroom and kitchen with beverage making facilities / fridge. Whole raft of empty cupboards. Don't know who would be using them all. No magnifying shaving mirror in the bathroom. Lots of period style furniture in the suite but looking a bit tired and faded. Some curtain hoops off the pole at one window and the curtain itself partially hanging off. Thorough checking needed before signing off for the next guest ! Excellent breakfast ( traditional and Vegan options ) with fruit/cereals/ juices etc. Need to bring the toast with or after the main plates otherwise its stone cold. Doxford has 2 meal options in the evening ; The market menu in the lounge bar but not a lot to choose from.Then there's Fine Dining in the main restaurant. Not a big fan but went with the flow . Had Canon/ Rack of Lamb with a couple of teaspoons of peas and carrot. The lamb was quite rare and amounted to 2 forkfuls., i would say it was a waste of money..Very pleasant gardens with a terrace to sit out and enjoy a glass of wine. Huge maze to try out . Should engage participants for several hours trying to find their way back out. Good heated swimming pool and spa with towels and dressing gowns.

It was a lovely stay in the coach houses the only issue was in No 43 the lighting in the main room was poor but we still had a brilliant stay. In the Spa the number of loungers & seats were a problem for the number of people using the facilities. We didn’t arrive until the afternoon and other guest told us it worse in the morning. The massages were out of this world

Absolutely Beautiful Hotel

What an absolutely fantastic hotel the grounds where beautiful, close to the coast seahouses, Alnwick castle.
The staff where very tentative, on arrival we was looked after by Luke & Leanne wonderful people couldn't do enough for you.
We was shown around the hotel beautiful antiques everywhere very classy, and quite posh.
We had our cockerpoo with us and was welcomed almost everywhere in the hotel, breakfast was absolutely delicious in the cocktail bar and the evening menu was wonderful highly recommended the fish and chips and Ceaser Salad, evening staff Leo was a great guy, breakfast staff Jodie absolutely wonderful lady, as was all the girls on the morning staff.
Spa pool a little cool but the Jacuzzi and sauna was lovely.
Definitely staying again

We enjoyed two lovely nights at Doxford Hall along with our little dog. Lovely big room. Fantastic breakfasts. Very friendly staff. Great location to visit fantastic local beaches. Spa was a little tired but would have amazing potential. Sauna could have been a little cleaner. All in all a fantastic stay and would definitely recommend for a mini break.

An amazing 3nights of relaxed luxury. Restaurant food on particular was fab fine dining but there was also a market menu. Breakfast was excellent. Grounds were lovely even in the winter and plenty of places to sit inside including a library.

Nice area and town of Alnwick is fabulous. Room was okay but maybe a bit rundown and in noisy area of hotel maybe because we booked third party instead of through the hotel. Not as lovely as hoped and steam room was out of order for our stay. The jacuzzi was also broken and had a sharp edge which my partner cut himself on. The breakfast was nice but facilities such as coffee bar and massage treatment felt overpriced. I paid for 30 mins but probably only got about 20 mins massage.

Absolutely appalling stay here. The room was dated, the view from the bedroom windows were of broken sections of plastic covering roof tiles that need repaired. No money has been spent on the upkeep of this hotel. There was no telephone to call reception. Housekeeping chapped the door at 9:20am. The food in the restaurant was below standard. That much so I had an upset stomach. The lift shouldn’t be legal. That is a death trap. How this hotel has 4 starts it’s beyond me. I certainly will not be back. The receptionist was rude on arrival. Breakfast was an absolute joke. Asked to share a table with people that I didn’t know. It definitely was the worst stay I have ever had. Wasn’t t worth the money spent. I can’t recommend this hotel, it is a shambles. Refund should be given. Awful…

We were “upgraded” to the hotel which felt more like a downgrade. We planned our honeymoon and did want some privacy. The room was ok but nothing special. It was spotless but the room felt bare. The food overall wasn’t good, overcooked meat, lukewarm breakfast and overpriced. We did attempt to have a nightcap at the bar but it was seriously lacking atmosphere and the cocktails were overpriced since they came out a premixed bag. Since you’d only need to spend a little extra at a cocktail bar and you’d get the whole show too. The pool and facilities were really good unfortunately they shut quite early. Overall the experience was disappointing and didn’t really meet a 4 star standard.

Our room - one of the coach houses set in the grounds was pleasant after sorting the musty smell - the room felt damp and cold. After some airing and heating it seemed ok. The furniture was all stained marked as was the carpet and the furniture needs some TLC. There is no private parking - you need to park round the back of the coach houses. The swimming pool was pleasant. Breakfast and food was lovely. Staff ( when you could find them) were nice.

We only stayed overnight. Arriving late and leaving early. The only issue we had was with the hairdryer which overheated. There wasn’t an immediate spare but they did borrow the spa hairdryer for me. Breakfast was one of the best hotel buffet and cooked we have had anywhere. Good quality and great choice. Friendly staff.

Doxford Hall was a lovely place to stay. The rooms were very spacious and the furnishings were of very good quality. The rooms were unique and had real character. The staff were very attentive, helpful and friendly. The only reason we didn't give an excellent rating overall was that we were a bit disappointed with the food. We had some strange combinations on our plate which differed from what the menu said. The strangest was a mackerel 'crockett' along with our chicken main course. Odd. We presume that it was a mistake - if not, it's not a taste sensation we'd like to repeat. My husband's starter was to be smoked trout but he was sure it was the duck he received. We weren't overwhelmed by the quality of the breakfast either. We were expecting tastier sausages and the black pudding wasn't the best. Didn't like the hash brown and the mushroom was very greasy. We did think that in season fruit like strawberries or raspberries would have been a good addition to the cereal table. Seems like a lot of criticism and we're not usually so picky but we felt the food did let down the standard of the whole place. Our stay was still enjoyable though.

Disappointed with Cleanliness and Over-priced

Doxford Hall Hotel and Spa is in a quiet location with the potential to be a great place to stay. However, I would not recommend it due to lack of cleanliness, expensive restaurant and accommodation which was at a standard below that expected for the price.
I stayed in a Superior Double Room in June and it was too warm because the window would not open as it was sealed by paint. The bathroom was spacious with luxury fixtures but it was not clean; there was a musty smell due to black mould underneath the toilet rim, this had not been cleaned for ages but was cleaned after complaint. The sink overflow and shower hose were also mouldy. The bathroom fan did not work and was filthy.
The restaurant did not have enough capacity for all residents causing overflow into the Cocktail Bar which was hectic and not very comfortable. Whilst there was a good choice of food it was over-priced and subject to a discretionary 12.5% gratuity charge. This was excessive as the service did not even offer free tap water.

A superb, quality country hotel where we felt very welcome. On arrival we were given a friendly ‘tour’ by Alan. The setting amongst manicured gardens and towering trees is stunning. Our room in one of the cottages was super warm, very clean and tastefully furnished. Gym was a plus for us. Breakfast in the stately dining room had great choices. A wonderful stay.

We booked Deluxe Cottage, 1 king bed. Nothing luxury about the room! Dirty entrance, the room looks like nobody was there for a long time, spiders everywhere, in the bathroom the walls were full of spiderwebs (scary), it is a mirror with light on the wall, didn’t work, bathroom door was stack, you need to push hard to opened, very noisy! When you book Deluxe room you expect to have a dream bed mattress, unfortunately not here. We didn’t fill comfortable at all. The main entrance in the Hotel very unwelcoming, dirty and lots more. Staff were very friendly and breakfast was very good. I have to say that food was good. Overall was amazing experience, lots to do 15 to 20 minutes around the Hotel. Hotel itself needs lots of improvements.

Nice but not great for the price

We stayed in one of the cottages which looked lovely however when we first arrived we were given the key to the wrong cottage luckily we didnt walk into anyone but all there belongings were in there.

Our cottage was nice but the curtains/skylight blinds could have been blackout as we woke up at 5am to a very bright room.

We also noticed the bottles of water hadnt been changed since the last booking as one if these were half full.

We thought the room we stayed in was a little tired, and not overly clean. It’s a beautiful room but first impressions are from a badly stained carpet, the 2 armchairs were stained badly, net curtains ripped, a sticky fly screen on a lamp was full of dead flies. Looks as though it hasn’t really had any investment in the room for many years.
The towels in the room were excellent and the staff were friendly.

Service from staff was excellent, room was nice apart from small things such as only one saucer in room, heating on full blast which took ages to cool down and dirty drawers. The spa and decor are little dated but nice enough. The grounds are beautiful and clearly very well maintained. Breakfast was good. Bar area a little stale.

We stayed in one of the cottages in the grounds.
Spacious and beautifullly quiet. The only negative was that a few things needed attention. Bulbs needed replacing in the bathroom, the tv remote didn’t always respond, and when my wife opened the curtains in the morning, the pole came down and nearly hit her. All very small points, but known to the hotel so they should’ve been sorted.
Apart form that, the hotel was excellent. The food in the Runciman restaurant was wonderful, as was the cheaper market menu in the bar.
It’s excellently located as a base for exploring the coast, being close to Holy Island, Bamburgh etc.

A lovely setting and impressive building with a nice outside area.
The staff were very friendly but at times slow, especially at breakfast and the bar.
The room was very spacious, with nice furnishings. It was however dusty and the carpet was tatty in places.
The toiletries provided were minimal and there weren’t complimentary robes or slippers which I was expecting.

Fabulous visit!

We loved our stay! Staff were so attentive and went out of their way to be helpful. Dog friendly - made arrangements for us to breakfast with our dog in a separate area. We appreciated this very much. Loved the whole atmosphere- luxury but not overly uptight with it. Felt relaxed and at home. Lovely breakfast. Staff are a credit to the hotel. Beautiful building and enjoyed the swimming pool / spa as well as the gorgeous grounds. We hope to return again.

Nice & comfortable hotel with space to improvement

In total it was a pleasant stay. It is a nice hotel with a nice atmosphere and several cosy lounges. Rooms and beds are comfortable.
But there are some small things which could be better, specially at this price niveau:
There were some dust filaments in the chandelier of our room, as well in the balustrade of the staircase.
In three nights the towels in the bathroom were not changed (even we put them on the ground).
They want to be a wellness hotel. But there are no bathrobes (which is a standard for all other wellness hotels I know).

A lovely hotel, great service, excellent restaurant. Fairly basic spa but good enough. Bed pretty uncomfortable but clean and all the necessaries. Would return, lots to see nearby and fabulous coast line. Loved it.

The property is lovely and situated in a beautiful and secluded area. The staff were excellent and very attentive and helpful. The spa and swimming pool were very good. The afternoon tea was delicious.
My only small nighle was that I did not feel the evening meal came up to the same high standard as everything else. My steak came with potatoes, one field mushroom and half a tomato! Given the general high standard of the hotel and the cost of dinner this was a bit of a disappointment.
