Old hotel that needs maintenance. The plus is we have big room but the bathroom, TV are old. The room has a little bit of humid smell. The wall is thin we could hear the kids running around the hallway and the road noise. The receptionist was nice and accomodating.

The room was comfortable, but I think they need to work on their plumbing - the water pressure seems low, and the pipes give out a nasty noise and vibration when you turn on the taps initially. But other than that, the stay was excellent.

Absolutely great for late arrival flights - twice I've arrived late evening and rested here the night before continuing to Medan. Clean and comfortable rooms, polite and friendly staff members, reasonable price. I don't like the fake white-stone "garden" out of the window - the bright lights are always on and the curtains don't cover the window. I had trouble sleeping on one of my stays because of this. Also it's not clear how to enter the hotel from the airport arrivals - there's a sign that says entrance at the back of the dining area, both times it was locked and had to shout to be let in. I didn't realised until the second stay that I should've entered through the front (which is further away from arrivals). Fix these two things and it's perfect 😅

The second day I pict up a bacteria in my stomach, OR the food was just too spicy for me. Do not know. Just in case of others had problems you should check it up. But I know, a bactera can come just from any place. I felt the hotel was clean thou.

None of the staff had much command of English which made every request and dining a little difficult. The establishment wanted us to continually pay for drinks, meals, etc instead of allowing us to charge to our rooms and staff had no idea about wine or cocktails protocols. However it is a very nice hotel.

Lots of problems with this high priced hotel which made it bad value. The swimming pool closes at 7pm which is way too early.
The room has only two bags of green tea....nothing else. Breakfast is stressful and crowded. Not enough tables so I had to sit in the lobby area and then trek a long way every time I needed something from the buffet. A lot of the items were not hot -baked beans cold. No table reservations makes it a chaotic unrelaxed breakfast.

Overall good and safe, room is a bit run down with smelly cupboards, need to be updated. Should've asked for a room not facing the road as it's very noisy all day and night.
The deposit return should be made easier (the piece of paper can be replaced by some other form of ID).

I spent 3 nights in the Grand Mercure, before and after my jungle trek and Toba tours and each night was a great, different room. Herbert handled my check in with professional and kind greetings Abd Eggi showed me to features of the room and promptly brought my bag up.

I loved the lounge and coffee shop in the ground floor with live piano music.

The deluxe room was wonderful. It was large and had a very comfortable king bed.
Breakfast at 8:30 on Sunday morning was very crowded and the wonderful staff kept up with replenishing the buffet.

This is the second and last time we wil stay at this hotel as the first time we had a simmiler experance and were asked to give them another chance so we did but they could not deliver.

We arrived at the front desk before 10am and we were offered an early checkin to our room against the official 2pm checkin time. Staff were friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast had an enormous choice of food; but the hot dishes were served at various temperature. Some were at [air-conditioned] room temperature, but some were served piping hot that I needed to bring along some tissue paper to open the lid to avoid burning my fingers.

When we booked through Expedia.com, we booked for a large King size bed and it even said on the confirmation page under "Check-in: Your room/unit will be guaranteed for late arrival.
When we turned up at 1030pm, they told us that there they do not have any more king size bed in a non-smoking room. They offered us two twin beds for us, as a couple.
It happened the same for my friend, whose booking did not even show up on their system and he booked through Expedia as well. The staff did not even offer any other alternatives like room upgrade or free breakfast as part of their customer services remedy for the situation until we suggested that perhaps they could offer us free breakfast.
We were at the reception for at least 0.5 hour that night before we could check in.
Upon checking into our room, I was rather disappointed. While the common areas like the lobby and restaurants have been renovated, their rooms are very dated and very old. The shower looks dirty because of old stubborn stains and the towels are quite old and tattered, with a tinge of yellow. The carpet needs a good vacuum as well!
The lightings in the room are fixed with fluorescent white light bulbs (probably energy savings kind) hence totally killed any atmosphere for any romantic night.
All in all, one of the most unpleasant hotel stay I had stayed in, and I have stayed in many different hotels being first as a flight attendant and secondly as a frequent traveller.

Had a bad experience as my confirm booking which was paid but when I went to check in there was no room available and they told me that the hotel was full.They told me to wait for 30 minutes to sort it out.After that they manage to get me a smoking room which was not what I had requested. Since there was no smoking room I had no choice to take the smoking room but I had a uncomfortable night in that room even though the hotel tried to help by putting a diffuser .They managed to get me a non smoking room the next day. The staff at the counter was plesent and courteous while attending to me.

This hotel should improve their service

We think that the receptionists do not really understand with the payment methods. We argued with them about the payment using credit card. First, they insisted to open our credit cards with deposits and they would return our money back to the card (how come?). We wanted to pay directly and had our credit cards sealed, or, they might open and deposit but then close it when we check out and we pay. We argued for some times. Finally they agreed to receive our payment (sealed) and we deposited some money.
Second, they refused to give us receipts with a reason that we booked through booking.com. It's quite strange. We had paid when we checked in. Again, we argued and we showed the print out of our payments. After the debates, they agreed to give us the receipts.

Medan is quite dead at night.

Need to check your travelling priority. If wanted sight seeing you need to plan for mountain view and Medan is far from that as it more of clubs and pubs. Sight seeing is a minimal as can be done in a day.

When I arrived, at first they could not find my booking even though I booked it a week earlier. They had to verify with Expedia / hotel.com to find my booking. Then after a long wait, she come back to me and said that my booked "Deluxe Room, 1 King Bed" was not available and they could only provide me a room with two twin beds. How can a room be not available when I booked one week in advance and how did it actually get booked if it was not available? I said that it was not acceptable and I had no use of twin bed. So, the female reception goes again for checking and comes up with the news that they were giving me and upgraded room without extra charge but when I came to the room, I found out that it was actually a downgrade because there was no bathtubs in the bathroom. So I came downstairs and I challenged the reception about the upgrade with less amenities and she could not answer. I told her that I was accepting it for the night but I wanted a transfer to my originally booked room the next day and she said that there was no availability the next day. Still I wanted her to report me the next day but she never called me. So, I have a very strong feeling that they over book their rooms when they get a higher price. Secondly, the security is prejudiced. There is a scanner at the entrance and every time I came back from outside, I had to go through it but I saw many locals did not have to go through it. There is no descent restaurant apart from a KFC.Housekeeping was excellent

Was not 5 star as claimed. Towels were not changed and was discoloured to over washing. Slippery bathroom floor and no bathroom towel, it was placed outside the bathroom door. Bathtub poor, water was discoloured and rusty to non use. Sink water was poor in bathroom. Phone keeps ringing from the bathroom rather than from the bedside table. Room was nice but bathroom needs upgrading.
Staff are helpful and pleasant. One of them was sick at the reception and was so obvious she was having a nose drip with her constant breathing in of the nasal drip. Lobby area is nice and the hotel was nice enough to give a morning breakfast free though it was first bluntly said 'no'. Lift shuts too fast.

Plus points:
Good room size. Jacuzzi and steam bath is a big plus point. Food at restaurant is also great and reasonably priced. Breakfast serves reasonable good spread but a bit expensive. Water pressure in the bath is good.

Minus points:
1. There was no towels in rooms. Booked 2 rooms both also none. Called housekeeping for 3 times only they sent.

2. Swimming pool tower seems to be whiter than room towels.

3. The security key to enter each floor is very inconvenience if u have friend staying in other floor. You can't enter that floor if your room is from different floor.

Average to good hotel.

Booked a non-smoking superior room. When checking in, was given a smoking superior room as their was no non-smoking room left. Opening the water tap for the bath-bub, brown coloured water came out indicating rusty pipes. The room itself including the linens and towels looked tired. Checked out of the hotel after 3 nights and booked into another hotel for the rest of my stay in Medan.

Als het Grand Mercure in Medan het vlaggenschip van Mercure is dan weet je dat je deze keten van hotels beter kan overslaan. 2 sterren! Verouderde kamers, verwassen handdoeken, geen body lotion of hair conditioner en een lauwe douche. Bed lag overigens prima. Door de ramadan kon je niet bij het zwembad liggen, de ligstoelen waren weggehaald om tafels voor een buffet te plaatsen. er wordt slecht Engels gesproken en personeel vraagt of je ze wil noemen in de reviews. Dit is jammer omdat elk personeelslid aardig is, sommige vragen er gewoon om.
Kortom, perfect hotel voor een paar nachten met prima bed en prettig personeel maar veel meer dan 2 sterren is het niet waard.

This place has got five stars with reason. Everyone in the staff was helpful and friendly. It was really nice looking in the lobby and in general inside, like there were huge red decorations and a Ford car from 1925! Room was as I hoped and expected. Big old-fashioned writing desk (great). Relaxing sofa with a footstool. Water pressure was great in the room. That is not something considered self-evident in hotels in Indonesia. About breakfast. You really had a chance to eat an excellent breakfast. I was so happy to see that there were separate place choices for vegetarians and vegans. Variety was good and I got to eat some tasty food I had not eaten before (I do not name it). Also in other places in the breakfast area were some other hot vegetarian things. And of course as well a lot of fruits and desserts. And drinks like ginger water with sugar and three freshmaded juices. Coffee was the best one I got in Indonesia. Etc., etc. I really enjoyed my stay.

Points positifs : Chambre spacieuse et literie confortable. Excellent petit déjeuner.
Points négatifs : chambre mal isolée et vétuste (beaucoup de rouille dans la salle de bain, chutes de bouts de plâtres du plafond, ménage non fait sous le lit…). La salle de sport est extrêmement mal entretenue, beaucoup de machines sont rouillées et inutilisables. C’est très en-dessous de la qualité habituelle hôtels Mercure.
