Near 5 towns (cinque Terra)

There is a grocery store and restaurant near by. She does luggage storage and check in before 10pm. She takes cc. The owner is so nice and kind. Rooms are huge for Europe and have beds for the kiddos if needed. She has a hot water water maker and there is a night light, heater a ac. The location is close enough to the train station but a little bit of a walk. There is also a free coffee and tea with a mini snack breakfast made to order

Staff is very friendly. Hotel is very different from any other hotel I have stayed in. I enjoyed it. Easy walk everywhere and very safe day or night. Walk to train or boat for Cinque Terra trips without paying the high price for hotels in the towns. I love La Spezia

Very good location, perfect for my purpose.
Receptionist very helpful and thoughtful in her communication with me as a hotel guest.
As with most hotels only criticism small pieces of soap irritating to use also sachets of shower soap dreadful to open and use.. ;
cleaners were evident very early in morning, difficult to relax; finally size of shower room slightly miserable, probably could have been designed slightly larger within overall room space. Thank you

Decent location and the staff were friendly but the actual room was poor. Felt like the whole hotel was run down. In the room there was paint and plaster falling off the wall and doesn't seem like any basic maintenance has happened for many years.

The picture of the room accommodations was no where near accurate. The room was small, very old, shower curtains that were torn, bathroom only large enough for 1 person. hardly room to move around in the room. The hotel was VERY noisy. The staff tried to be as accommodating as possible.

Lovely modern light room recently redecorated. Our bathroom was tiny, the smallest of bathrooms we had in Italy and you did wonder how you might manage but it worked. There is no lift access and the marble stair case is worn but we had no problem moving up and down them. Staff were happy to help with bags if asked. Nice outdoor garden space for drinks or coffee. Lovely home made buffet breakfast. Typical contential breakfast plus cereal yoghurt and boiled eggs. We enjoyed our stay and they were happy to help with travel advice. We used this as our base to travel to Cinque Terre. Wifi was also good.

Superb receptionists!

The receptionists Domenico and Sarah are very friendly and helpful and spoke flent English. Domenico helped us to take the luggage to upstair since there is no elevator. They provided us plenty of hot water since we were sick. Maybe it is low season now, the room was quite dirty. We had to clean the bathroomour ourselves thoroughly. It was cleaned better the next day. The bath room is very small: your head touching the door when sitting on the toillette, the basin was the smallest like a toy we had ever seen, the water flow from the showerhead (shower room ver small) and faucet was small and weak. The location is convinient: the busstp to Porto Venere (which is a wanderful place to visit) is one block away, the train station is walkable to (thus, a good base for visiting Cinque Terre). The breakfast was ok.

Excellent hosts and hotel in a fabulous location.

This hotel is in a really great position for exploring. The town itself is not over run with tourism and feels really safe and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. The room was satisfactory and good value. Parking was easy and the host was so helpful with this issue. A refrigerator would have been helpful but the air con was great. I would recommend this hotel as a fpgreat base for exploring.

Could've been better.

Decent but underwhelming. Seems like they need better maintenance staff; housekeeping was fine.

AC functioned, but blasted out dust or mold, so we didn't feel comfortable running it. Shower temperature fluctuated wildly between scalding and frigid. Windows in the bedroom and bathroom didn't close all the way, allowing mosquitos in.

The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the train station. On check in we were told that the weather would be bad the next day and we should do as much to day as possible so we decided to get to all 5 cinque Terre towns. He also carried one of our suitcases to the room. The breakfast was great and home made. A great hotel to be base for cinque Terre

Sarah,Luca & Domingico were the best hosts.. They were all so friendly and extremely helpful. The included breakfast was fantastic.
I would definitely recommend this hotel. Also in a great position for railway station and for catching ferry. 10 minutes walk to each.

We were there for just a night, so it was fine for that purpose. The owners are slowly but surely fixing and upgrading, and they are very helpful with whatever you might need from them. Tiny bathroom, but everything worked! Ask for recommendations for a good restaurant, and you will not be disappointed with where you end up! The train station is only a 15 minute walk, which is nice if you are going to Cinque Terre for the day.

Great base.

We used the hotel as a base to head up to cinque Terre and it was perfect for that. It was near some restaurants and the train station. Breakfast was fine and the people were very nice. The room was the same sort of size as all of the other hotels we have stayed in on our tripe around Europe and was nice and clean.

Awesome staff/place/location- but paper thin wall

Great front desk staff! Great location! Good and clean facilities but room a bit small. Also walls are very very thin and you can hear EVERYTHING your neighbor does. I mean EVERYTHING! So if you are a light sleeper that might be a problem.

The front desk staff was amazing, they definitely went above and beyond for me. Ex: I was running late for my train the morning I was leaving so Sarah packed a breakfast meal for me on the go. I mean who does that? That was amazingly sweet. The only problem I had was the paper thin walls. I could hear everything done in other rooms. Including the loud woman moaning at 3 am (which woke me up). Other than that the place was clean, good location, etc.

A nice hotel, convenient to train station.

This was a nice, quaint hotel. We chose it because of it's location and cost. It is a few blocks from the train station and near the center of town. The lady who checked us in at the desk was super helpful. She recommended an awesome place for dinner. The breakfast was also incredible. They take great pride in fresh local foods. The room itself was nice and had been recently remodeled. The bathrooms were small. Our shower stall was very tiny. They are aware of this, and apologized in advance, but the property owner isn't letting them remodel them.

Good for one night stay in La Spezia

This hotel is 10 min walk from the train station. The hotel is very small, old and has very small room, especially the bath room. However, the new management team is working hard to upgrade and improve the rooms. Though small the rooms were very comfortable, clean and good for a one - two night stay.
The new managers are very nice and attend to your every need; and speak very good English (important to us on this trip). The breakfast that is included was very good. They have a woman from the countryside that prepares fresh made breads and pastries for breakfast.

A bargain hotel but with great management

Our room was very basic, but nonetheless comfortable. This hotel has limited amenities, but the Internet was reliable, fast and free! The bathroom was ridiculously small, and the shower was not the best. It was missing a simple soapdish so that there was no place to put the soap after you'd lathered up.In addition, the water pressure was barely above a trickle. The best part of this hotel are the two managers who run it. They are simply wonderful. They bent over backwards to make sure we were happy with the hotel, and always met our requests for advice or help with a big smile and a helping hand. I should also mention that the breakfast was delicious, with pastries made on the premises. The hotel is a short walk to the train station and perfect as a starting and ending point for people visiting Cinque Terra. If you choose to stay here, be sure to request parking as it is in short supply.

Although a little run down and needing some updating we found our 4 night stay comfortable. We were unhappy with our first room and were moved to a different one the next day without any problems. The breakfast was very good with home made cakes and savoury treats, which are usually lacking from other Italian hotels we have stayed in.

This a a small hotel, close to the center of La Spezia, about 12 minute walk from the railway station.The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast are nice, rooms clean. The carpet on the stairs up to the bedroom should be replaced.Good value.

Smart, clean hotel, great staff and breakfast

We had a recently refurbished room, which was clean and light. The receptionist told us about how they had trouble making the most of the bathroom space as the building was listed. The bathroom was very small, but had what you needed. Plus myself and my partner are both 6ft tall, so a smaller couple would probably find the size less of an issue.
Breakfast was AMAZING, loads of homemade cakes and different pastries and even strawberry tiramisu!
We stayed here only one night to see the Cinque Terre, it was a decent base for this, about 20 mins walk to the marina where you could get the tourist ferry round the Cinque Terre Villages.

We had dinner at a lovely Osteria on the same street, about 2 doors down. Lady had just opened, food was beautiful and all homemade and really authentic. Would definately recommend.

The service provided was warm, friendly and very helpful. The room was clean. Very small bathroom, they offered us another room but we were happy to stay in the room as the bedroom area was quite large. No mini fridge, but not too big a problem. Everything we requested was not a problem. The location was perfect for the requirements of our holiday. Breakfast was great with a number of choices. Only improvement would be some form of room freshener for the bathroom as this had a stale smell as if someone had been smoking in the room.

I stayed here in May, 2014 on my way from Milan to Barga. We had a day to spend and decided to sleep here and spend the remainder of the day in the Cinque Terre. The hotel is small, rather old and not in any sort of scenic area. The room was small, but very clean and well appointed. At 50 Euro/night, including breakfast, it was an outstanding value. The breakfast was delightful with a variety of meats, cheese and lovely pastries. If you just want a place to sleep, this is a great option. Highly recommended.

Nice base for cinque terre

This is a very basic hotel to use as a base for cinque terre sightseeing. My single room had an adequate double sized bed, an ample closet and a tiny desk. The bathrooms are very tiny but about on par for hotels in Italy and Europe. The toiletries were quite meager as well. However, all this was perfectly fine for me as I mainly wanted a hotel to base myself off of for exploring cinque terre. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the train station and it takes about 10 minutes to get to the first town of the cinque terre(riomaggiore). This hotel is also near a pedestrian walkway where you can find shops and convenience stores. All in all, a very adequate hotel, that was quite clean, and if you just need to rest your head this would be perfect. Also great is the included breakfast- very nice to have that in the a.m.before all the hiking!

The hotel looked dated. The rug covering the stairs were filthy, thankfully our room and the bathroom were acceptable. Breakfast was the worst we've had on our 3 week trip. The breakfast offerings were at least a day old, what was supposed to be warm were cold. Proprietor was late in waking up (breakfast was supposed to start at 7 and there were people already waiting by the door)), it took her only 10 minutes to set up, that's how I know that the breakfast offerings were at least a day old.

Our room was very modern and recently refurbished - colour scheme was very chic! Comfortable bed but having said that the room was a little tight for two people and luggage. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was magnificent! Couldn't recommend it highly enough!

Great place to stay while enjoying Cinque Terre

Excellent value and convenient for daily trips to Cinque Terre. Located about 12 minutes walk from the La Spezia Central railway station. It was easy to catch the frequent trains to the towns we wanted to visit. The room was small but recdently redecorated and had it's own small bathroom. The breakfast choices were delightful. Manager Nadia was most helpful in suggesting restaurants, places to shop and telling us how to get to the places we wanted to go and her English was excellent. We wholeheartedly recommend the Albergo Birillo.

They are currently doing renovations so my room was lovely and bright and modern. The bathroom especially was very modern and clean. The hotel was about a 2min walk to the main pedestrianised street, so was far enough away to be away from the noise, but a nice easy walk to lots of restaurants and shops. The owners were extremely friendly and incredibly helpful, with wonderful English spoken. The breakfast in the morning was all home made cakes so was very yummy!

Warm hospitality

I was travelling alone in April. Being able to book a single room in a budget hotel was my original incentive to stay here but I was glad I stayed in La Spezia to visit Cinque Terre and I enjoyed very much the warm hospitality of Albergo Birillo. The walk to the hotel from the station was a great introduction to this interesting city and added to the feeling of staying somewhere authentically Italian, rather than another tourist hotel. The gracious friendliness of the lovely staff added to the feeling of having experienced genuine hospitality. The breakfast was amazing with the home made buffet served beautifully. This is a great place to stay if you want to experience the character of Italy but may not satisfy those who prefer their accomodation to be just like the last place they stayed.

Nadia (manager) was extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast was the best part about this hotel. All pastries are homemade so definitely worth it for the price. Rooms are spacious and nicely renovated, except for the bathrooms. Bathrooms are clean but small. Takes about 10 min to walk to the hotel from central station. Cab costs 12-13 euros to get to central station if you dont want to walk with luggage. Train to cinque terre region only takes about 15 mins, so definitely worth staying in La Spezia to save some money and also saving the hassel of carrying your luggage around if you stayed in one of the 5 towns. Would definitely stay here again the next time I visit the Cinque Terre region.

Hotel is a two star, but the service from the front desk Manager was great. She was very welcoming and personable and fluent in several languages. The hotel has undergone some renovations and looks nice in the lobby and breakfast area. Our room hadn't undergone renovations and our double bed was actually two twin beds pushed together... Not exactly comfortable. The bathroom is very tiny and showering is a pain. Great breakfast, good wifi connection and family type service. Overall, a great location for the Cinque Terre as the train station is a 10 minute walk :) Thank you!

We stayed for only one night but the service was great. We could ask for anything : directions, information, more of this, more of that, ANYTHING : They will will give! The location his great, nice place not far from the water and nice places to shop and dine. The price is good, the rooms are big, the toilet not so big but OK. No parking, but the parking on the street is cheap. Would stay again and again.

Owner very friendly and helpful and we had a wonderful breakfast each morning with home made breads etc. (stayed 3 nights). Slight street noise from about 6.30am but quiet at night. About 10 minutes walk from train station and close to the market and parks. We would certainly stay there again and found it a very good base for exploring the Cinqueterre. At the end of the day we could get a cup of tea (or coffee) at the reception bar which was much appreciated.

Great service, and good breakfast

Staff were lovely, we checked in early as we had arrived into town much earlier than planned. The room we got had a tiny and not overly functional bathroom...shower ran straight onto main bathroom floor, but otherwise all was fine.

The staff could not have been more wonderful, and a lovely breakfast including homemade goodies was included.

Internet connection on second floor was not great however.

I would only stay here again if I was desperate for a room

The very helpful and friendly reception staff were the only redeeming features of our stay. They were pleasant and tried their best to help with whatever we asked.

The room had furniture with cupboard doors falling off and drawfronts the same. The sheets were frayed and the curtains were coming away from the curtain rails.
This wasn't the worst though. The bathroom was awful. It stank! We ended up leaving the light and exhaust fan running non-stop to try and reduce the odour of mould and goodness knows what else. The hand held shower rose holder was broken leaving the shower dangling from the soap & shampoo holder. The bathroom was also incredibly small. You virtually had to step over the toilet to get to the space allocated as a shower.
On the positive side, it was only a 15 minute walk to the trainstation to the Cinque Terre and they did have 3 car spaces reserved for their guests on the street infront of the hotel, if you were lucky enough to be in the first 3 with a car to arrive. Otherwise free parking about 400m away was accessible.
There is no lift so you must carry all you bags yourself to your room. Ours was on the 2nd floor but there were floors above ours as well.
All in all - I would only stay here again if I was desperate for a room.

From the moment our cab dropped us off at this hotel, we knew it wasn't going to be for us. Nothing appealing happened when we went through the doors. The young man at the front desk was very personable and offered to take our bags to the 2nd floor - no elevator - and we are senion citizens. The room was located off an air shaft disguised as a window - there were a few other rooms in this corner of the building and no other way out but down the stairs - definitely a fire trap. The bathroom was clean but old and weathered and the shower a total disaster. We slept with a dresser pushed against the door as someone was making lots of noise during the night and we were not sure how safe we were. The evening young woman was also extremely nice and she helped us get our luggage down the next morning as we knew we had to leave this place. I will say the breakfast was very nice - no problems there, but we decided to relocate to Riomaggiore rather than spend the 3 nights we had left at this hotel. Sorry about this review, but it is the truth.

Decent base for visiting Cinque Terre

One of the few hotels I stayed in all through Italy that actually offered free wifi (in the lobby only). About a 10 minute walk from the La Spezia train station. Staff was friendly and gave us a great restaurant recommendation (Puccinella!). No elevator so make sure you can drag your stuff upstairs yourself. Rooms are supposed to be non-smoking, but someone was def smoking in ours. Staff helped us air it out and get rid of the smell.

Great basic hotel

This was a fine hotel for the money in a quiet area of town. Hotel staff was very helpful and accommodating. Room was clean, but fairly basic. It's about a 15 minute walk from the train station, and close to the major shopping restaurant areas in the city. Only disadvantage was the absence of an elevator and internet in the room. But internet access was free in the lobby. I would recommend this to a budget oriented traveler, looking for a base to the Cinque Terre

Convenient, comfortable and friendly

Our room was small but had everything necessary including a king-size (two singles) bed. The hosts/staff were all competent and helpful with local knowledge. Breakfasts were excellent with local and freshly made products and they even made cappuccinos on a proper machine! We were located midway between the railway station and the wharf - ideal for accessing Cinque Terre. The only drawback was the immediate location was not particularly pleasing but close to town centre, market and very safe.

Hotel just a short walk from the train station and very easy to find. Reception were very helpful. The room was large & very clean but basic. Bathroom extremely small but had a very powerful shower.
Got exactly what I expected from my stay here! :-)

La Spezia is a great base for visiting the cinque terre for a number of reasons.Accommodation choices are wider and access is so much easier.Battling through crowds and multitudes of staiways with luggage would be no joke.I'm so glad I stayed in La Spezia, and the Albergo Birillo did it's job very well.The staff are very friendly and helpful and speak English.Dining options in the immediate vicinity of the hotel are limited,but you are sure to find something.The hotel is an easy 15 minute walk from the railway station.

Albergio Berillo was a quaint little place at the end of the street, away from the busy centre. 10 minutes from the train station so easy to go on day trips to Cinque Terre. Great fresh fruit market close by. Had a computer for hotel guest use. Rooms could get noisy at times. Clean, tidy and warm. Cosy place but better for couples or groups.

I would recomment this hotel and the city of La Spezia to anyone visiting the Cinque Terre. That is also my qualification. I did the Cinque Terre in a single,
very long, day and would recommend a more relaxed pace. The city of La Spezia was far nor active and vibrant than any of the tourist guides seemed to suggest. This hotel is a bit of a walk from the central pedestrian route. It is small and the room was more than adequate for my needs. The owner was
very helpful as was all the staff. I explored the city on my first day, did the Cinque Terre the next day, and left very early on the third day. The price was exceptionally good for the accomodations provided. The only drawback and qualification was the active roadway below my window. I had a double room
with bath (small but adequate with an overflow shower drain in the center of the floor). I would stay again. It served my needs and at an excellent price.

L'albergo è posizionato in località centrale
A pochi minuti dalla stazione dei treni ed è vicinissimo a negozi, ristoranti, musei e al lungomare. La mia camera era molto silenziosa. Un po' piccola per due, ma io ero sola e quindi per me è andata bene Pulizia ottima. Personale gentilissimo e accogliente. No colazione, purtroppo. Ma ho potuto avere comunque il mio cappuccino (anche caffè e thè). In camera c'era anche un bollitore. (importantissimo per me). L;'edificio è buon po' vecchiotto, ma, per chi è in vacanza, non è poi così importante. Per me, almeno. Lo sceglierei di nuovo

Un peu onereux par rapport au confort de la chambre. Les photos sur internet ne correspondent pas à la réalité. Salle de bain : une seule lumière au plafond les autres ne fonctionnaient pas. Pas de petit dejeuner. Sinon bon accueil et bien situé au centre de la Spezia.

Bra hotell för priset. Ganska bra läge (det ligger inte riktigt i centrum eller så, men nära nog att man kan ta sig runt till affärer, restauranger, barer och tågstationen till fots), frukosten var gratis vilket var fantastiskt (mest sötsaker men fanns även yoghurt, lite flingor och små smärgåsar. Frukosten varierade lite varje dag) och personalen var fantastisk och väldigt hjälpsamma.

El baño más pequeño que vi

Las instalaciones son bastante viejas y la limpieza deja bastante que desear. En la descripción pone que hay posibilidad de parking pero en realidad el servicio de parking hay que reservarlo días antes. El baño es estremamente pequeño que creo que no cumple con ninguna normativa. Los colchones y las almohadas son bastantes viejos y en un estado de desgaste considerable. Las paredes no están muy aisladas así que se oye todo lo que pasa en los pasillos y en las habitaciones. Por cierto en nuestro pasillo no había luz, supongo que se quemo la bombilla y no la arreglaron. El desayuno esta bien

Hotel in ottima posizione! 10 minuti a piedi dalla stazione e 10 dal porto. Hotel piccolo ma pulito, adatto a chi come me ama vivere e visitare il più possibile la città. Qualche rumore della città durante la notte, ma zona tranquilla per chi viaggia in solitaria. Personale gentile e disponibile. Al mio arrivo mi hanno dato indicazioni sulla città e le mappe.
