1. Breakfast was ok - only pancakes and sugar syrup- the pancakes was delicious - could have been better if there was butter and maple syrup to go with the pancakes.
2 the mattress in room 21 where we stayed was too soft and saggy and sagged towards the middle- time for a new firmer mattress for all the other rooms as well?
3. There was very limited parking in the hostel grounds- had to park on the kerbside outside on the road- any chance of getting more carparking for your clients?
4. A few good pair of scissors for the kitchen and for our use please, and fry pans which are blackened and with handles swivelling/loose should be replaced with new ones?

The staff and other guests were friendly and pleasant to deal with. The free pancakes each morning were a nice surprise.
The communal bathroom could do with an upgrade, but everything worked. Not sure how rooms are selected/allocated, my room was almost as far as possible from the communal bathroom.

I didn’t like because we arrived at 10:20 from Perth , they charged me $40 for the late arrival and the room were very dirty, smelly and the bedsheets and beds were disguising, they never cleaned the room. My children could not slept as the bed was dirty and they got itchy. The hygiene was very poor and horrible.

Toilets especially the urinal smelled so bad that I was not able to use the full facility like shower as it's all in the same room. I don't understand why a toilette has to smell so bad that you have to dry reach. Use bleach twice a day should eliminate your problem. Also, got maximum 2 hours of sleep as the noise of the communal area did not stop until 3 am. Location and staff are excellent. Would never use again unless the toilettes get upgraded.

Pancakes each morning were great and stimulated friendly interactions between guests and staff.
Taco the pussycat was a hit with our 11 year old.
Amenities were great, generally clean plenty of room & equipment to cook your own meals.
The men’s bathroom stinks, Urinal poorly cleaned/maintained.

If you want to be in the centre of town the location is quite good with public transport just across the road. I had a private room bed was very uncomfortable mattress has definitely had its day, shared bathroom facilities are definitely not great needs renovation. But depending on your budget it nay just be your thing. Lots of interesting guests to meet and strike up a conversation .Staff were friendly.

Don’t come. Staying in your car overnight is even a better decision!!

The worst hostel I’ve ever been. Drugs and addicts wandering. Dirty floor and dirty bed, dried blood and plenty of dust on the bed. Not expecting a perfectly clean room as it’s a hostel, but it’s still way too terrible. Not mentioning its price is not cheap. Also it was super noisy. People were singing and shouting at night so loudly that nobody could sleep. We literally walked out and stayed in our car at the end.

I enjoy this place, it was built in 1849 as the name of the place.

The room is simple, with 1 window, 1 fan, 1 table lamp, no TV. However, there is a common area with Books, TV, Table Tennis, Board Games, etc

There is also a common kitchen with all the pot and pans. The best of all, free Pancakes for breakfast.

Location wise, this place is walking distance to town centre, very convenient.

I deduct 1 star is because the place is a little old, and need some repair on certain areas, like some shower cubicle door is broken, gents urinal flush is leaking, kettle needs replacing. If you can get pass those minor defect, this place is fantastic

This place are in the centre of the town. Walks easily everywhere. Rooms only and shared toilets and baths, however, it is perfect just for a couple who loves travelling and exploring places, not looking for a decent room. Good for a group of friends. Totally recommended to all explorers and backpackers.

The room in the photo was nothing like the one we got. Ours was just a bed with very dark sheets and a filthy carpet. We were so disappointed that we payed to stay somewhere else even though we had payed for this room.

Full of free loaders and people with no respect

The two people running the place, Abraham and his Irish lady colleague are very helpful, polite and trying to do a good job. But they are understaffed and under resourced, and have to deal with a lot of people who have NO respect for others in the building. Blocked up toilets, not flushing them after 2's! People literally stealing the teabag out of your cup while you are washing up in the next room. People rummaging through the pantry in other peoples supplies, and THEN when they see you have a jar of coffee, having the cheek to ask for your jar, AND your own spoon.... Who stays at a place like this on a long term basis and doesn't provide their own tea, coffee, utensil??...SO many of them do NOT wash up the common room, even leaving their food in pots, pans, bowls, and leave it to the over worked staff to deal with... It is truly disgusting and pathetic. One \"long term\" resident even walked in front of two of us watching TV, and just changed the channel without even asking or saying anything, because, you know, he is entitled to, because he is 'long term'. SO many people doing self centered things with no thought for others sharing the common facilities and space. Will Never stay there again and do not recommend anyone doing it either, worst and dirtiest \"back packer\" experience of my time... This isn't a reflection on the staff, they try, do great pancakes, but are hamstrung by so many people who don't give a rats about anybody but themselves. Not all obviously, but a lot!

1849 is a very bussy backpacker hostel! The rooms are of reasanoble size and the staff is very helpfull and friendly.
I recomend it to all backpackers and to those who want to stay in Albany (Western Australia) at low but convenient price.
There is one free pan-cake in the morning between 8:30-10;30 ($2 each for susequent ones).

One thing to note is that it is quite run down and old, which has a bit of an appeal. However, we got locked inside our room as the door lock was broken and were told to just leave it unlocked, so just be aware and double check!

They hold a $10 for key but they don't pretend to give it back as nobody answer the phone in early morning. Bedroom smells bad, full of stuffs of other occupants and you don't have space for anything in the room, even walk. People smoking everywhere. Don't recommend at all.

The staff were lovely, room was decent and the resident animals were adorable. Bathrooms were very clean but kitchen was filthy, and we had an extremely loud family who seemed to think it was OK to take over the entire bathroom for most of our stay and their screaming children could be heard at the other end of the hostel with nothing done about it. Otherwise it was a quiet and pleasant place however I didn't appreciate the fact that I was charged double upon check in (when I booked, and again when I checked in) so even though I told them I had paid on booking they denied it, and I had to check my records and have it corrected.

Wooden passageway - noisy clomping ALL night..
Car park full - parked on street.
Left after 1 night, originally booked in for 3. No sleep.

I think they are comparable in their service and treatment of customers to many others out there.
Towels and heaters in the rooms may be a huge upgrade for a place like this,more so in the single rooms as I wouldnt expect it in the dorms.

First of all, the Hostel gives a lovely impression with it's facilities and communal area. No fault there. Staff was very friendly ! Staying there two nights a few things made my stay not as enjoyable. First of all the Women's showers had way too much hair everywhere- from stuck on shower tiles to floor. It needs more regular cleans or when check in, it has to be said to the guest to be more mindful of other people. Second, we booked a double room and the picture was nothing like the room we were given. The actual room was one cupboard, one squeaky bed, one nightstand with a lamp. No mini fridge as pictured, no extra decorative cushions, not a second nightstand. Very minimal. Which is okay, just not as pictured. Night sleep was terrible. Even the hostel is not a party hostel- it was SO loud due to the wooden floor boards. First person up in the morning 5;30am we were wide awake. The room door was banging all night from the wind coming through the gap. The mattress and bed was so squeaky that we kept waking each other up. Lovely hostel..but not good for a peaceful sleep.

It was junky, there were a few broken things such as 'don't use the basin in your room as the water goes nowhere'. Slippery and dangerous in the female ablutions, broken button when flushing toilet.

Room was not at all as described, size/bed/furnishings completely different than advertised (smaller than described and far more basic, sink in room that did not work, mattress with exposed springs). Noisy. Breakfast also not as described (pancakes served with sugar, the only option). Otherwise nice place, good vibe, great common area, helpful staff, plenty of carpark spaces.

I really loved all the people there; workers, people staying, and all! There's a wonderful homely atmosphere and it was just really enjoyable! The breakfast was lovely too, as are the people who made it. I would recommend it maybe more for people who enjoy meeting new people and enjoy staying in places that feel more like a really comfortable home rather than something extravagant. All the same, it's a good experience.

Great location. Run down, daggy tiny double room with stained carpet, noisy old cheap metal bed, wafer thin pillows, terrible mattress. Noisy. Nothing like the dishonest picture. The bathroom and toilets were worse than a bad caravan park. The men's urinal absolutely stank, like a seedy pub at 3am, except all day. The whole place is in need of a serious maintenance overhaul. It was just dirty. From the sand pit car park, to the dirty doors and walls. Do not recommend! As an ex Albany resident I was embarrassed that this was presented as acceptable accommodation for guests to our country. I will be lodging a formal complaint with the City of Albany demanding a health inspection.

Very helpful staff and thanks to their help, I had great time in Albany! The building is old, and sometimes you can hear the music from the band at the back. But the staff had helped visitors to have the best help they can wish for.

Best backpackers!!!

After having walked off the Bibblemun Track it was a lovely surprise to being greeted to wonderful friendly greeting and a free drink.
Such a large place and really great pancakes ( unlimited amount!!!) Each morning....great squishy chairs to sink in the lounge and a vast amount of books and DVDs . Loved staying there and highly recommend. Close to all eateries and many local attractions.
