I booked this hotel through expedia for 4 nights. The hotel is nice, our room was comfotable and clean. I would have given them 4 stars however we had to check out early due to a personal matter and the hotel refused to refund us saying it was up to expedia to reimburse us and when I contacted Expedia, they told us its up to the hotel to reimburse us. Having said that, it left a bad taste with us and won't be staying here or using expedia again.

We stayed at Grand Hotel Portovenere to explore Cinque Terre for three nights during our honeymoon. The hotel was well located for catching the bus or ferry, but doesn’t have a train station. Unfortunately the cost of transfers offered by the hotel to book were extortionate (400€ approx to Pisa Airport - a 1 hr 15 min journey). The ferry was running hourly until early evening during our stay, and we enjoyed seeing Cinque Terre from the sea. However, the trains between the villages are much quicker to use - it takes nearly 1.5hrs to get from Portovenere to Monterosso by ferry. The staff at the hotel were very friendly, and the room was comfortable and clean. We had booked a room with a sea view, which was lovely. Although not necessarily expected, it was surprising that for a 5 star hotel, we weren’t provided with any extras for this being part of our honeymoon - the only hotel during our trip around Italy to not do so. The additional bottles of water provided each evening were appreciated. We did eat at the restaurant one night, which was a bit underwhelming, and we would recommend Porto 82 a few minutes walk away instead. However the view from the restaurant if you manage to get a table on the terrace is beautiful. We had breakfast on the terrace in the mornings, and it was the best we had during our Italy trip, particularly the freshly made to order eggs.

The bathrooms left a lot to be desired. Gym is literally in an entirely different building.

We also asked for a cab to be called to get back to the train station and it was literally 2x what it cost to get there.

A beautiful and luxurious hotel over looking picturesque Portovenere harbour. Staff were friendly and service was excellent. Amazing buffet breakfast, meals and bar. Very clean and comfortable rooms. Highly recommend this hotel to use as your base to explore Cinque Terre region. You can access the villages by ferry from front of hotel or by train from La Spezia.

World Class Hotel

Portovenere was a pleasant surprise from start to finish.
The city is charming, but we wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if we hadn't stayed at the Grand Hotel Portovenere. The hotel is magnificent, the breakfast is great, the bar-restaurant is delicious and has great views.
But the best thing was the kindness of its people: at reception, in the restaurant, the luggage service and cleaning staff. All outstanding. We immensely enjoyed the Beach Club affiliated with the hotel and the yacht with which we went for a ride during the sunset.
Congratulations sincerely for having a world class hotel.

The property is well maintained, clean and very comfortable with amazing views and walking distance to restaurants and shops. The terrace, restaurant are lounge are very cozy and lovely. The rooms were very comfortable and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and really aimed to please! I wasn’t sure if it would be a problem not to officially stay in Cinque Terre but the hotel was right across the street from the ferry dock and there were plenty of restaurants and things to do in Portovenere so it was actually a relief to come back at night and escape from the crowds in the other towns.

They Went Out Their way to Please Us

This is a really interesting hotel built in and around strict zoning requirements to preserve the old town feel. When we checked in, we were upgraded to a suite that unfortunately was directly across from an elevator. We are light sleepers, and knew this wouldn't work. The manager put us up for the first night in their best suite, that had a full terrace, two full bathrooms and an amazing suite. The next night they moved us to a fully acceptable room consistent with what he had booked.

The rooms are clean, and well appointed. You can easily walk out of the hotel and find 20+ splendid restaurants. Some right on the beach, others tucked away in quaint alley ways on a nearby square. I particularly liked to see so many locals in the restaurants when we went out at night.

High marks, we would definitely seek this hotel the next time we are there. The included breakfast was fabulous, both the food and the view from the veranda where they provide it.

The position overlooking the sea is fantastic and there is so much to do in the area, including visiting the Cinque Terre by boat. What made our stay extra special was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Restaurant and views were amazing. Server Brian was very friendly and also was the entire staff. Check-in was easy, although finding the parking garage was a bit tricky. Bigger signs are needed, pointing to the direction of the hotel parking garage. If u miss the turn on the first visit, like we did, the you have to circle the town and try again. GPS points to the hotel but not the parking garage, which is located beneath the hotel in a tight alley space.

Lovely hotel in a super location. Right by the ferries to the Cinque Terre villages. Very friendly staff - all very well trained. Wonderful sea view from our room. Good breakfasts and had the best beef we’d tasted in ages in the restaurant.
Couple of negatives - could have done with more seating in our room. Also there was little to mask the noise from other rooms and we had someone in the room above who liked moving furniture.

THE BEST!!!!!! this hotel is one of my favorite hotels. It is the second time we stay here. We were there in September(8 people, 4 rooms) Valeria just goes over and above her responsibilities. I had many questions for her before we started our trip and her response by email was very quick. The whole staff including our parking attendant was there for any request we had. The rooms are spotless, the bathrooms are beautiful. We have traveled to many place around the world and this will be the hotel that will come up in conversation from staff to hotel to of course the beautiful town of Portovenere. LOVE IT and we hope to see Valeria soon. Thank you!

Perfect if you want to go to Cinque Terre! It is located 2 minutes from the ferry. Fantastic food at the restaurant.

Perfect location right by the dock. The hotel is lovely and staff are great. The terrace restaurant is fantastic, with great views, food, atmosphere.
Only reason not a 5 is that rooms are small and the spa/gym is at an offsite location and a bit dingy

As u have coeliac disease I have struggled to find assistance in many places in Italy and thought PortoVenere would be the same. I was wrong! The staff at the Grand Hitel have provided me with an exceptional experience - not just with food but with anything I have asked of them. The hotel is lovely but it’s the experience provided by the staff which makes them stand out.
