The room was of a decent size. However, the bathroom was too small. I had to be careful so I wouldn't hit my head on the ceiling when taking a shower. Also, the room is not soundproof at all. We stayed 4 nights, and each morning, we woke up with the noises from other rooms or the reception before 8 AM.

It was really nice for a single room at that price and I had a great view from my room. The staff were very helpful and I loved being able to get the city bus from right outside. There was a bit of noise but earplugs are a must have for travelling at this budget ❤️

Good location with several nearby bus stops. Roomy enough for 2. Good lighting and cooking area. Very good trash collection & towel laundry. Needs a dining table and chairs instead of the very uncomfortable couch-bed as no usable eating spot. The table chairs would be more comfortable to watch TV than that terrible couch. A couple of suitcase racks would be nice. Overall satisfied with apartment as a good value with good staff and location.

Uraraka was the perfect base for my exploration of Kyoto. The room was small but clean and had had everything I needed. At the price, it was fantastic value. There were plenty of dining options nearby and it was close to public transport. The manager was extremely helpful and spoke excellent English. Highly recommended.

A very good Guest House

The receptionists were marvellous. All of them. Specially the young man that I met there on 2 days of my 3 day stay. I was going to Osaka from there; but the typhoon had come and the trains had been cancelled or suspended. He spent so much time to find out for me & then write the directions down, so I can take the normal slow train to Osaka (the bus Nos, the train names, the stations I needed to get off, the landmarks) and I got to near proximity of my Osaka hotel; he even asked me the address of the Osaka hotel so he can tell me which lines to take, to get off the train just near it. He was the most helpful receptionist ever and I have met many many receptions in my travels. He & this guest house topped them all. They have produced a very helpful local map of the buses near them. Thank you for being so helpful. :-)

Best budget-friendly stay in central Kyoto

I stayed a week in Uraraka and I was very happy with the service and with my stay there. After spending the 1st night in smaller room,the staff gave me a more spacious room which was perfect for a solo traveller.Read some reviews before about the location,but it’s actually perfect(I know the city very well).From the bus stop 1 min away from the guest house, there are buses taking you to Arashiyama,Higashiyama,Sanjo/Shijo region, Kinkakuji-basically to most tourist attractions in these areas.there are free bicycles provided and if you need train,JR Nijo is 15 min on foot.Two convenience stores within 3-4 min walk,and a big supermarket with a 100 yen shop also 3-4 min walk.Nijo castle is basically across the street.extra clean rooms,with daily towel change upon request and if you stay longer,they change bedsheets every 3rd day.
Staff is English speaking and so,so helpful.Yuji san even stayed with me when my airport shuttle was late,in case I needed to call.Overall,nothing bad-only wonderful experience.

If you want a grand hotel with a big lobby and glitzy bars then this isn't the place for you. If, however, you want reasonably priced, clean, central accommodation with good wi-fi and super helpful staff it is. Other reviewers have remarked on the size of the bathrooms and, while they are certainly small, they're perfectly manageable for a few days. The only negative to our stay was that the wide selection of breads for breakfast didn't include any non-sweet, plain varieties for toasting etc.: if that's the only criticism you can make then you know they're doing pretty well!

Great location (a 10-15 minute walk from Nijo JR station. All of the staff were incredibly helpful, friendly and spoke very good English. The breakfast breads were very tasty, and the tea/coffee facilities in the lobby were also handy. The room was very clean and spacious, with comfortable beds (we stayed in a twin room). There is also a large supermarket and a few 7-11s nearby, but it is a while away from the main touristy areas.

This is a great little hotel in a quiet but easily accessible area of kyoto. The choice at breakfast is good and found good views of the sunrise from the balcony. Has everything you could need, the only slight downside is that you could hear many of the noises coming from the floor you are on but i understand that is hard to control.

The staff were most helpful with suggestions of where to eat, on bus passes, using their bicycles and with a bus stop right outside, nothing was too far away.

Sadly though, it was very noisy and some of the other guests had no respect for the “quiet times”, which was quiet disappointing. Take ear plugs!!

They try hard, but property falls short

Single room was quite small, same with bathroom. Walls were thin thus it was noisy. Plumbing was sub-standard. Bed was quite comfortable. Not many choices in restaurants in that area. Learning to ride the bus is essential. However, for such a low price, it is a good value. Young staff is eager to please. Has the feeling of a youth hostel.

Very nice and helpful staff! Many know many languages. They were able to ship my luggage to my next hotel! And they sell bus day passes at the front desk, do I didn't have to track one down. They give you several maps for the area and for the bus, even marking on each one where the hotel is. It was a little out of the way (for where I ended up wanting to go) and the showers were a bit small, but those are minimal gripes compared to the rest of my stay. Thanks for a fantastic visit!

Incredibly pleasant and definitely recommended

The staff were super helpful and answered any questions I had easily and quickly. I loved the rooms, very clean and spacious for a Japanese hotel. Also the cheapest non-capsule hotel I found in Kyoto. It was lovely and has lots of facilities available. About 15 minutes walk to every station, which is managable and well located as means you can get to each subway line with equal distance. Many plugs in the rooms, had fresh towels everyday, toiletries and a fridge. I had such a happy stay here - definitely great for solo travellers and families.

Fantastic location, was able to walk to most of what I wanted to see out there and the service is wonderful, they really go the extra mile for you. Free tea and coffee all day too! Clean, free wi-fi etc this place is a good choice. My ONLY complaint (which could be more on me than the guest house) is that the signage could be more clear, it was very easy to walk past and miss it coming from the right. I got lost twice, luckily the locals were nice and helped me out but even if they had a small sign which stuck out visibly from both directions I think it would help. Interior was a little old school and reminiscent of hostels rather a hotel but I'm splitting hairs here as that's just my personal taste. Overall: clean, friendly and in a wonderful location. A good place to stay!

Walking distance from Nijo-jo castle. Close to bus stops. Very friendly staff. the private bathroom in our room was tiny but had good hot water supply and nice water force. The rooms were clean. The staff members are very sweet, accommodative and welcoming. All of them spoke English. We are vegetarians and when the staff learned about us being vegetarian, they sorted the bread to meat containing and vegetarian friendly section and informed us which was suitable for us. Overall, the place fitted our needs for stay in Kyoto.

This was an excellent experience. The hotel is a little difficult to find, so be sure to provide your cab driver (or yourself) a clear address and possibly a map from online. The hotel staff spoke English and were more than helpful, offering directions, suggestions and they have bike rentals onsite; which I found to be the easiest way to get around. They are located only a few short blocks from the Castle. Highly recommended!

A great guest house, will stay there again

It's a really nice guest house in a good location for transportation, the bus stop is less than a minute walk from it, so you can reach it strait from the train station by bus or if you want to go look around in Kyoto. The rooms are nicely done, equipped with everything you need for your stay. The staff is really friendly and helpful, so if you want to go somewhere in Kyoto, but don't know how to get there, they're gonna help. A little bit of an extra was, that the day I stayed there, there was a big rain, but they even provided towels at the entrance elevator to their guests in a basket, so you could dry yourself while going to your room (a really great thing when you get soaked by the rain). Sadly I couldn't try out the breakfast, because I needed to catch the train, but there's always the next time.

I loved it here. When I booked it seemed very cheap so I was wondering what to expect but it was great. Quiet, clean, room was nice, staff were lovely and spoke English. Breakfast was various sweet breads and coffee and my room wasnt carpeted; these are the only areas for improvement I guess if I really had to come up with something. Highly recommended.

A good hotel for your Kyoto stay.

The hotel is very nice, with helpful staff. Our room was small but this was expected. The room was clean and comfy. We managed fine for our 5 nights. The breakfast provided was adquate. Hot tea & coffee and different types of bread are available in a small area on the reception level. The only down side is it's away from the main sites, but saying that numerous bus routes run past the hotel.

Good quality guest house... staff speak English fluently which is a treat for Japan. Rooms were small but very clean and even though the guest house is a little far from the downtown area it is extremely well connected by bus. Having free coffee all day was a treat and the free bread for breakfast was also nice! Overall, I would recommend this hotel if you are on a budget!

The staff at the front desk were most helpful and very pleasant to interact with - this was definitely the highlight of my stay. The building itself is simple and feels more like a hostel with lots of young people staying there. The double room was sufficiently comfortable for one person, despite the bathroom being very small - which is common in Japan.

VALUE HOTEL close to Public Transport in KYOTO

Superior rooms with kitchen - are well appointed - however, have very considerable road noise - very difficult for a light sleeper. Standard rooms at back of hotel are quite small but quiet. Stayed 4 nights in Superior room and one night (later) in Standard room.
Hotel allowed us to store 2 suitcases for three nights while we went to Hiroshima - extremely helpful!

Great place for travelers! VERY helpful staff.

Location: Located right next to the Nijo Castle, it's a bit of a walk from the train station, but the bus stop is right outside. Nice quiet area.

Service: Front desk was SO HELPFUL upon check-in. They give you a rundown of everything. They have maps and other helpful papers in the front area. They sell one day bus passes (SUPER HELPFUL. Highly recommend! each bus trip is Y230) and they also sell stamps (an orange post box is right outside as well). They even have a list of great cherry blossom sites posted and recommended restaurants. There's free breakfast in the morning with a variety of breads: sweet, savory, sausage ones. You can grab a drink for the day in the front kitchen as well. There's also a microwave and a toaster oven.

Room: Take your shoes off before you enter the room! It's required. Plenty of floor space and a big comfy bed. The bathroom is TINY and a little old, but clean and does the job.

It's not the fanciest place, but was clean, spacious, and has great resources for travelers.

Note: FIRE RAMEN place is across the street. GO THERE. So much fun!

The staff were absolutely lovely and very helpful with transport and restaurant recommendations. We definitely picked their brains about their local knowledge. The room was clean and tidy as was the entire guesthouse. A breakfast of tea, coffee, juice and savoury and sweet breads was provided daily which was a real plus for us!

Great location to explore Kyoto.

This is a good location for quick access to bus travel around the city, stops are just across the street. 15 min walk to train station just two stops to Kyoto station. The breakfast is just pastries and drinks. I wished they had fruit and either boiled eggs or yogurt for some protein. Would also suggest disposable slippers since mandatory in rooms. Did not like the reusable ones provided. The staff was very nice and helpful. Overall great experience.

Inexpensive hotel with very small rooms

We stayed for two nights at this guest house, which is closer to a hostel than a real hotel. Our room was very small - barely enough room for a bed and a table, with TV on wheeled cart - with a very small bathroom that lacked sufficient leg room when sitting on the toilet. I do not believe the hotel room was really 18 square meters (maybe the measurement included the balcony), as we also stayed in a 16 square meter room in Tokyo that was much roomier and had a normal bathroom, two chairs, and room for suitcases. This hotel's room had only one chair and table and not enough space to open two suitcases, nor to leave the double bed without climbing over the other person. The ceiling was quite low too.

The staff were courteous and friendly, but many appliances (water heater especially) had to be requested. Although centrally located, the hotel is not really near any major tourist sites except the Nijo Temple and Nijo Palace, though it is close to buses that go to Kyoto Station, Gion, Arashiyama, etc. The neighborhood is pretty quiet and dark at night and the only location of note is a supermarket about 500 meters away.

I was quite unwell when I arrived and my check in time wasn't for around 3 more hours. The staff saw I was unwell and offered to let me use a room that was available so I could lie down while I wait for my room and they also brang me some bottles of water. Very very nice staff who are happy to spend 15 minutes or even more helping you plan out a trip.

One of the best budget hotels I have stayed in. Very convenient. Staff spoke English and were very helpful even lending us umbrellas as it was raining. The bathroom is small but adequate, no wardrobe, just a few coat hangers on the wall but this was fine for a one night stay. I would definitely recommend as value for money and would return.

A comfortable homely experience.

This isn't the place for you if you are looking for luxury, but if you want a friendly, casual atmosphere where the staff really care, this guest house is great. The warm, genuine welcome on arrival set the scene for a relaxed stay in a lovely city. Public transport is close at hand and many attractions are within easy walking distance. The tiny bathroom took some getting used to, but, overall, this was a pleasant place to spend a few days.

We are a group of senior citizens from Singapore and Malaysia who stayed 1 night on 6/9/16.
It was a beautiful and well kept guest house, though a little difficult to locate due to insufficient information on its location and how to get there. Beautiful, neat and clean room with facility meant for family group (for Quad room).
The staff was Mr Ko was very polite and helpful and provided good information of the surround sightseeing spots ( may be better if these information were given through email when we booked the accomodation).
The breakfast was simple and homely. The owner Mr. Li was very helpful and kind, when I informed him that I lost my wallet in a taxis.
We enjoyed our 1 night stay in Kyoto because we stayed in Kyoto Uraka guesthouse, the shopping and local street sightseeing. The people were all very friendly, polite and helpful.

This is a Guest House and you were made to feel like a guest from the moment you arrive or perhaps more like a new friend. They were all some welcoming, informative and very obliging. It was the friendliest place we stayed anywhere in Japan.

Good deal in a nice location.

Very convenient place, easy to find. Near Nijo Castle, a must-see in Kyoto. I found the room was a good deal during tourist season. The staff also has a good command of English.

Clean and cozy room

I've stayed for three days and had a great time there. I worried a little bit about a small room (10.14 square), but it was good enough for me. The single room didn't look that small and it was clean and cozy. But the bathroom is really small.
It was a little bit far from the subway station, but close to bus stops, so if one is going to take a bus more, then it would be fine.

Good location at a reasonable price.

Staff were outstanding ,extremely helpful with maps and guidance, good English and the breakfast was adequate with an assortment of breads and beverages. The location to bus was good for ease to get around.
The Fire Ramen restaurant across the road is a must visit.
Of all the 4 accommodations we stayed in Japan, I would say this was the best for the price we paid and the service on offer.

The Guest House is great for the price. The room was nicely decorated and have everything required. The room is a little small which was expected. One downside was the bed was too soft and squeaky for comfort. Upsides are there is a great supermarket - Izumiya round the corner, Nijo castle is within walking distance, a bus stop 1 min away from the guest house and great staff!

Friendly, Convenient, and Inexpensive Hotel

Uraraka Guest House is located by three convenient bus stops, making travel to and from the hotel easy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and all speak great English. The hotel was cozy and clean, and I appreciated the free breakfast breads and 1 bottled drink per day.

I stayed in a single room on the 4th floor and it was perfect for me, the only complaint I'd have is that the floors and bed were really squeaky so if I got up in the middle of the night I was worried I'd be disturbing other guests. But it wasn't that big of an issue at all really. This hotel is ideal for anyone who just wants a cozy place to sleep after long days of sightseeing.

I also liked that I had a TV, fridge, and free wifi! That made the stay extra convenient. I liked the hotel and the city so much I extended my stay by another day shortly after arriving. I will definitely stay here again next time I come to Kyoto. :)

Lovely convenient place to stay

Convenient location close to bus stops to visit sights to see. Staff excellent and helped us with bus tickets to where best to eat. Room (standard double) was quite small not much room to walk around bed, but was comfortable and had a balcony. Free tea and coffee facilities whenever you wanted and breakfast included was lots of different types of bread (pizza, chocolate, donuts etc). Overall very pleasant stay and would recommend.

Functional and inexpensive.

Lovely stay, the rooms were pretty spacious for Japanese standards (basic room). The beds were unfortunately a bit worn out.

Staff were wonderful and very friendly. They helped us with the bus routes and places of interest.

The pantry was small yet provided the necessary amenities.

Overall it was a great stay.
* Suggest to get a room not facing the streets due to sound pollution from traffic.

Great location centre of Kyoto

Great location next to Nijo castle, close to imperial palace. Decent room with a very small bathroom, only complaint is slightly bad soundproofing of the door. Wasn't a problem however as overall it was very quiet during the nights. Hotel staff was very helpful and provided information on bus routes and general information about the area. Definitely a good choice for exploration of Kyoto and surrounding area as there's a bus stop in front of the hotel (daily bus pass is very cheap and can be used for travel to all Kyoto locations) and a JR station 10min walking distance away.
