Lovely Madeira Hotel

The view from our room was beautiful. The room was very clean, and the housekeepers were lovely. The hotel is slightly dated and could do with a good refurb however it was a good base for our trip. The breakfast was nice too! Well located with only 10 min drive from the airport and 10 mins away from Funchal. Bolt and Uber were both available in the area which we used to get around as it’s very cheap! Also only a short walk from Cristo Rei which can actually be seen from the reception area.

Positives were a nice pool and convenient breakfast buffet. Negatives were bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable and the noise was excessive all hours of the night into the early morning. Motorcycles flying by, car noises all hours, people in hotel playing load music, drunk people yelling on the street until 4am. Not only is it loud the walls a paper thin you can hear conversations next door and down the hall. There are no fans or AC to help with the noise or comfort of thjs place. I would never book again.

There are a few things I liked a lot and a few things I didn’t.

Pros-Very walkable,Lots of cafes, restaurants and grocery near by,Indoor pool,View from the balcony, the rooms were very clean,in room microwave and hot plate and I got a pleasant surprise of cake and champagne on my birthday.

Con’s- No AC thankfully I visited in the winter,the beds and pillows were extremely uncomfortable, No wifi in rooms only in common areas,Walls are paper thin, no elevator no kettle for tea or coffee in rooms

With that being said this is a perfect pick if you’re not going to sow and much time indoors. It’s a little dated but it worked for our shot stat

Absolutely enjoyed our stay with my boys and their football team at the tournament in Madeira. The hotel was lovely, breakfast was lovely, views was amazing, the rooms were beautiful and very clean condition. Definitely recommend this hotel for anyone.

The location and gardens are amazing. The staff are wonderful. Great brunch!
The rooms were very clean.
Towels are very old, thin and small. It was incredibly noisy. You can hear every movement through the walls and ceilings and the housekeepers shouting in the hallways at about 8:30 am. There are many large groups that stay and they are up late at night, up to 2 am sometimes, drinking and talking very loudly.

Convenient for beach (via cablecar) and Christo Rei view.
Room was reasonably good, with balcony although view was a bit compromised.

On arrival, reception staff were extremely friendly and we were made most welcome.
If you are driving, you can park in paid bays right outside -10c will get you 15mins to drop bags, for example - free parking a bit further away.

Neptuno restaurant nearby highly recommended for good simple food, very reasonably priced.

We stayed one night, which is enough to see the area (and a Gajarau dive) - but good base if you are on a longer diving course. Some other places to see around the island !

The rooms are located in a few different buildings, from the reception and main building we had to walk a bit uphill to our building.

There’s no wifi in the rooms, only in the lobby in the main building.

The hotel is not very modern, the bathrooms could use an upgrade.

We only had breakfast at the hotel, it was tasty, but pretty much the same everyday.

Location of the hotel is good, close to shops and the bus stop is in front of the building.

The closest beach is about 2 kms from the hotel, downhill, hard to reach without a car.

This property is perfect for a couple, family or single traveller. The property is located close to many options for public transport, a beach, and many restaurants and grocery shops on the street.
The room was very comfortable, and clean, it had a fridge which was very convenient.
There was a beautiful view from the balcony, three excellent-sized swimming pools, table tennis, volleyball and badminton.
The staff were very professional and helpful.
Breakfast was great plenty to choose from, cereal, yoghurt, bread, cheese, ham, fruit and a selection of hot food and drinks.

The staff both admin and hospitality were friendly and approachable and helpful. Transportation is ok bus stop right outside hotel to Funchal centro, there are a few places to eat locally, a fruit and veg store, a supermarket 2mins from the hotel or if you fancy a walk there is a hipermarket 8- 10mins away. WiFi only available in reception area and nontes facility in room. If Great view of the sea and nice location on the overall.

Dishonest kind of scam offer and desappointing CS

Dishonest kind of scam offer and desappointing customer service : we booked on Hotels.com a room with sea view. We paid more for that option versus the garden view of other view . The confirmation email didn’t say it was sea view so I said it in the comment section as well as asking for a double bedsince the offer was ‘ twin bed or double bed ‘ . The room they gave us when we arrived was #1 not with a sea view #2 didn’t correspond to the picture looking more old furniture and bathroom included #3 had a twin bed. We went back to reception and explained calmly but the woman asked me to show my booking reference as if she didn’t have it already or couldn’t find us, then made me acknowledge on the booking confirmation email it did not say sea view ... no kidding that is exactly what I reported in the first place in the comment section of our booking AND the price was higher because it was sea view so she could have recognized it straight away but no I had to repeat again and again show the booking website with price difference and show on our bank statement that we had paid a higher price for her to actually look for something else. Apparently mentioning we wanted to speak to the manager helped too.. but seriously what a dishonest and disastrous way to treat customers. The new room we got : yes sea view but smelt bad, actually no aeration in the bathroom at all , the TV remote wasn’t working. Also NO WIFI in the whole hotel only at the reception ... Finally bad breakfast..

I liked the pools - although the indoor one was supposed to be heated and it wasn't. Breakfast had something for everyone. The resident cats were very entertaining as was the singing barman in the evening! A really great character.
The souvenir shop is good value and the lady was friendly and helpful.
I think much more could be made of breakfast - the orange juice didn't taste nice at all and there was no apple juice. A couple more hot dishes would have been good too. I liked the sausages but don't eat eggs or beans.

I was in the refurbished part of the hotel and was happy with the standard of the room which had all amenities I needed including air con, tv and hair dryer.
The staff were very pleasant and special thanks to Paulina at reception who would always go out of her way to assist you.
The standard of cleanliness was excellent with room cleaned, beds made up and towels replaced every day.

Wouldn't stay again. Rude and outdated.

The location of this hotel isn't too bad at all. Cristo Rei is a short drive down the hill and there is a shopping mall up the road. Easy access to all the connecting motorways to Funchal, Machico etc.
Upon arrival we were greeted by a gentlemen I say greeted but he was rude and arrogant. Refused to speak english. Showed him my check in information to be told I should have printed something. This is not what it says on Expedia. It says to just show the text. He made a big drama over that. Started to huff and puff. Slammed a piece of paper with the WiFi and email at me and told me to send it to reception. I went up to say to him it had sent for him to just shrug his shoulders then ignore me. Asked where the parking is. To be told there's none. Outside you must pay. We ended up parking off one of the little side roads. The rooms are outdated however the view was nice. The beds are uncomfortable you can feel the springs dig into you all night. And not only that but the walls are extremely thin. You can hear people next to you talking. This however wasn't the worst of the noise. Dogs bark all night long, and we were right outside the chambermaid area. So they were constantly shouting & arguing.
Breakfast is your standard buffet style. I ended up skipping most of it as it was awful. I wouldn't come again. Better hotels available. There's hidden fees. Tax €10pp even though it said included. And if you want the kitchenette it's €12 a day! Lovely restaurants outside though go venture

Unfortunately - Storm Emma!

My time at the Dom Pedro Garajau was marred by the weather. Storm Emma was passing through.
The hotel is not really designed for spending a lot of time indoors. The rooms are basic but very clean. A couple of the blocks are in the process of being refurbished.
The only access from the rooms are via outside - so in particularly wet and windy weather this is not comfortable. The reception/bar area is ok for summer but designed to be warm and inviting on wet days unfortunately.
The staff though are all very nice indeed.

The restaurant although basic, has lovely staff and quite a reasonable selection of choice for the price you pay. The bonus of a carafe of wine included in half board option is very thoughtful.
Not sure cold Brussel sprouts and ham is my idea of a salad though on one of the days, but someone must love it.

All in all, its worth a visit for those on a budget.

Nice hotel close to beach and restaurants

We booked this hotel because of the convenience to buses, beach, walks and restaurants. The hotel was comfortable and clean and parts are being renovated for the new season. Our room needed updating so I am assuming this will be done in due time with the other parts. However it was spotlessly clean and the beds comfortable and we had a small balcony with a garden view and was sunny all during the day.

Breakfast was good - we don't eat pork so were happy with the scrambled eggs and beans and cereals. However for others they felt it was not of sufficent variety.

The heated indoor pool was good and because of the glass ceiling the sun shine through so it felt warm and summer like!!

Wifi was only in the lobby so you had to come out of your apartment/room to get to the lobby for Internet access.

I would recommend this hotel for its convenience and value for money.

Nice pool area and helpful reception staff. The hotel is also in a good location, close to the beach with excellent transport links. However, the walls are paper thin - you can hear EVERY noise from the rooms next door and above, no wi fi or air conditioning in bedrooms, no tea/coffee making facilities, very few rooms actually have a view and you must pay to use the room safe. The hotel is also spread widely up along the road - that means if you are staying in block 6 it is a 6 minute walk to reception and to the restaurant for meal times. The hotel does not provide and leaflets or information about the immediate local area - there is a good beach and bar that you wouldn't know about!

The hotel is dated needs t have rooms bought up to date single beds no iron or hairdryer. When I asked for a hair dryer I was told I could only have it for 2 hours, that's fine but our room was 500metres up the road. Breakfast menu never changed for the 14 days. Overall the rooms were large

Nice hotel for the price

The hotel was better than we expected for the price but the location is a bit difficult if you don't have a car as you need to get the local buses everywhere. The bus stop for Funchal is convenient (Across the road) but buses are on average ten minutes late. If you want to explore the east, then the bus stop is a good 10-15 minute of a super up hill road. We did that three times but we are young and still felt it was the hardest walk ever. The staff at the hotel are all really nice and helpful but the room cleanness was so and so(floor remained dirty) and even though we had asked to change the sheets they didn't change the cover on the top(we had gotten some mud on it from going hiking.

This hotel has 3 stars and does not deserve even for 2 stars.
There was very poor breakfast, nothing to choose and every day you had to eat the same.
There were dirty rooms
Swimming pool was close early and we could't swimm in the evening.
There was a kitchenette in the room but there wasn't enough plates and other kitchen dishes and the oven hub didn't work properly, I had to cook a 1 litre of water for nearly an hour.
Anyway the staff was very nice and the location was really good.

Some things that I do not like!!!

Two things that I was disappointed.
First, no wi-fi in the rooms, to have contact with the outside world we had to go to the reception and even there there was no good connection.
second, to a wonderful island like that, we expected that breakfast would be full of fruits and juices. we had to buy our fruit for breakfast in the morning.
On the other hand the people were wonderful to us.

Good location and beautiful grounds

Great location and very clean room. Layout a little strange with having to walk out onto main road to access room but hotel grounds are beautiful with 3 great pools to choose from. Rooms are clean and specious but no air con was a real problem for us. Breakfast was continental but plentiful with lots of choice. Hotel is dated but not half as bad as some people make out. Garajau is a nice area too with lots of cafes and restaurants on hotel doorstep.

A clean hotel but that's it

My wife and I spent a week at the Dom Pedro Garajau, well 5 days actually, because after five nights we had enough and went to stay in Funchal. The hotel, (well actually it's apartments with a dining room and a reception lounge) has some things going for it. 1. It's very clean. 2. The gardens and pool are very good. 3. The staff were pleasant, polite and hard working. 4. The building itself however is just like a 1970's comprehensive school which has not seen any upgrade since it was built. There are corridors and stairs everywhere. For those with mobility issues please note, this property is not for you; there are no lifts. The property consists of six separate blocks with no connecting corridor. You either have to walk from one part to another via the street outside or by the path and corridor at the rear of the blocks. There is nothing to do, either in the hotel or nearby outside. The best thing about the hotel is the bus stop to Funchal outside. We even visited the sister hotel at Machico and it too was tired, dull and well worth avoiding. Seriously...... pay a wee bit more and find a better property in Funchal. I was tempted by the heavy discount on the property, a mistake. It's true what they say, you only get what you pay for which in this case ain't much. I seriously don't know how it gets a 3 star rating, I even think 2 stars would be a bit of a lucky result for the property as it stands. It deserves 1 star.

The hotel is nice, very basic, rooms are clean. Staff was really nice and helpful. Breakfast was a bit boring. The garden and the pools are beautiful with many flowers, plants and with sea view. The building itself is old and you can hear every single noise from the other rooms. Many restaurants, cafes and shops are around, easy to get to Funchal even on bus. We enjoyed to stay there.

Facilities sparse for children

The hotel had beautiful gardens and good pools most of the people there were either German or French, the French were extremely well catered for they had their 3000 Club but the English were ignored. There are no lifts in this hotel we had to climb loads of steep marble steps to get anywhere as the hotel consisted of 5/6 out buildings on a steep hill. We were located on 4th floor and they only offered one floor below when we requested a change. No extractor fans in the bathroom and no tea making facilities in the room. Local food restaurants very good we recommend Nelson's Place. The down side was also local barking dogs all night and street fouling outside the hotel. The hotel doors slammed shut , no introduction to the hotel on arrival and no one to help carry luggage up the hill on arrival. We are in our 70s.

I read some less complimentary reviews before coming to hotel however was very pleased with my stay. Perfect for a week in the sun or long weekend. Low cost but comfortable, spacious and friendly. I would return.

Basic and archaic.

If you looking for some luxury find another place. This hotel is really dated, everything is old and in need of proper renovation. We're usually looking for a basic place to sleep, shower and keep our stuff, but even for that this place wasn't good enough. Walls and floors in this place were so thin, that you could easily hear every sound: from flushing toilets, moving objects, your neighbour snoring or street noise at night. On one occasion we came back from all day hiking to find out that our door lock was broken and we couldn't get in. When we reported the problem we were ask to wait for the maintenance guy because there wasn't one at the site at that moment. It took them one hour to fix it and no one even said 'sorry'. Another day the toilet flush (never seen such an old and loud thing in my life) broke down. Also the bathroom light was dodgy with the light only coming on after several times of flicking the switch. The restaurant and breakfast were basic, no hot meals at all and literally same food every day (with very little to choose from). And the worst thing, they keep a few cats in the hotel grounds and at least on 3 occasions during the breakfast time we had the cats begging for food between the guests tables inside the restaurant. This place is cheap, but not worth to stay there for more than one night. Stay in another place instead.

Hilly hotel

The hotel rooms were very basic but the staff were very helpful. The hotel is situated on a steep hill, it has 3 floors and no lifts. Older people should think very carefully before deciding to stay at this hotel and Madeira itself due to the very steep hills you will encounter but it is a very quiet, beautiful and peaceful island.

Why would anyone build a hotel where you really can't get from one part to the reception, pool and restaurant except by going on the road? I spent a lot of time traipsing backwards and forwards. My room was not particularly clean, and I could hear everything through the wall from the next door room. It was threfore a pity that they checked in and unpacked at half past midnight. The shower attachment was vertical to the bathroom wall meaning that the water was projected pretty much horizontally and also soaked the floor. There was no air conditioning and as my room was next to the road I couldn't sleep with the door open onto the balcony because of traffic noise.

Worst Hotel I've ever been to. After the second day we decided to leave and go to another hotel in Madeira although we had 4 days ahead of us.

Cheap and cheerful

The hotel was cheap and cheerful. We will probably stay there again if we back to Madeira. A couple of niggles though. As mentioned in other reviews that although a small kitchen (sink, fridge and 2 hobs) there were no utensils. The fridge was nice to have. The pool opening times was 0900-1800 but as there wasn't a life guard why was this? Also, and maybe it was because it was March, breakfast was basic .I found it good but my fiancée would have liked more choice especially prepared fruit. Another thing the restaurants near the hotel were uninspiring but not the hotels fault. On the plus side the hotel was clean, comfy and pleasant to stay in. The staff spoke good English and were helpful. Another plus is the the bus service to Funchal. It went from outside the hotel to the centre of Funchal along a spectacular route for just over 2Euros a head. Well worth it.
A GOOD BASIC HOTEL WORTH TRYING IF YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED IN FRILLS BUT JUST WANT SOMEWHERE TO SLEEP, WASH & KEEP YOU STUFF.

Do'nt stay here

We were under the impression that we had booked a self catering hotel but on arrival were told that although the room had a basic kitchen(two electric rings a sink and a fridge that did'nt close# and the seals were covered in black mould we were told if we wanted equipment it would cost 6 euros per. day. On further inspection we found the shower fixture was broken although it was fixed later.The \"Classic garden view\" was of two huge calor gas tanks#See Photo) On two occasions we returned to find our room door open it was\"nt till we reported it for the second time that the door was adjusted so it closed properly without being slammed .Also the advertised regular entertainment turned out to be a party for locals around the pool once only.On the whole a very shabby hotel in desperate need of refurbishment.Madiera is wonderful but stay somewhere else.

Very pleasant stay

The hotel was in a convenient location, with public transport just outside the entrance. Parking facilities nearby. Nice restaurants & Tapas bars in the area. The hotel itself has 3 swimming pools, one of which is in- doors. The staff is friendly & helpful. There is free WiFi in the main reception area. Every day the towels were changed, the room was cleaned and there were fresh sheets on the bed. The balcony was big, with a view to the sea. Quite idyllic.

Fantastic value

The hotel provided everthing i expected and a bit more regarding time to unwind and relaxe by the pools.I was worried about location but as i already had a car rented it was just great only 1 minute away from motorway to get to anywhere on the island.The local people were friendly too and happy to help .

we stayed at dom pedro 2 adults one 3 year old this is our second time ,for the price you can`t get a better hotel we had just room only because there are lovely eating places outside the hotel or in the centre we also hired a car which for us was a must as we went round the island. the hotel is not 5 star so if youe fancy a 5 star but think you can get the same service your mistaken. but for a place to stay for room only you cant beat it.the swimming pools are not heated but the time we went the weather was hot so nice and refreasing for us .they have 3 pools in total and tennis courts plus free internet at reception only. once again i stress for the price it`s great but do remember it is a 3 star.

A very pleasant experience

Having read reviews before to travel, I expected to find a \"pit\" and I was pleased to discover that the hotel is very nice, clean and the grounds are very well kept. It is only slightly dated and is in the process being refurbished so now is the time to get a bargain! I paid for a garden view but as my room was on hte 3rd floor, I got garden and see view which was very nice. The staff was quite nice and friendly. I travelled the 1st week of June which was half term in the UK but as it was not half term in the rest of Europe so there was no kids there apart from my 4 year old daughter and a very nice and friendly 12 year old from the UK. The pool is just perfect for toddlers. The kids club is damp but it is about to be refurbished and it was nicely equiped for toddlers with little houses outdoor toys and slides. I went on a B&B basis which was perfect as the local take away restaurant was cheap and the food was really good and fresh and the local supermarker provided cheap alcohol too! Drinks by the pool were quite expensive but the bar staff was quite happy giving us ice so we bought our own drinks from the supermarket accross the road. Most excurions/attractions are free for under 5 years old so it is ideal for young families. There is a small pebble and black sand beech at 10mn walk accessible by cable car and it is possible to do some dining there too.

Now, dont get me wrong. Im not a serial complainer! We two stayed 20/3/ to 4/4/09 in a standard room - a studio i.e. bedrm with kitchenette (fridge, cooker, sink and shelving ), as said in the literature. When I asked at reception why there wasnt as much as a spoon, cup or plate, pot or pan in the kitchenette as Id expected, I was told by a senior receptionist you have, sir, been misinformed . . all rooms are same. I was left wondering what other misinformations I was going to find out about. He left me reluctant to go to the desk to mention the sagging bed in the room. I fixed it myself with a bit of DIY, but I shouldnt have felt the need to do that. In the quiet of the night I became aware of the humming whine of a generator which permeated the room and the corridors. So, in with the earplugs, but still the whine. I hadnt the heart to complain. All rooms are same. In this area many dogs are kept. Some are vicious, slavering, beasts. Their barking from morning to night necessating trips away from the area every day. Oh yes, nearly forgot - the whine! On the 2nd last day I asked the helpful receptionist about the whine. He told me it was a generator. Could I be moved to a different room? Certainly Sir - further down corridor should be an improvement- you wont be directly above generator there. Would I like to have a look at the room? I hope you are now a little less misinformed.

O aquecedor de água parou de funcionar em 2 dias.
No café repetia as mesmas coisas todos os dias. O hotel não tem estacionamento.
