Pros: Clean, polite & helpful staff especially the lovely lady on reception who is very helpful,wonderful views from my sea view room, good sized room, overall good value for money.
Cons: the hotel restaurant is very expensive & the food quality average. Far from the centre of Funchal but a shuttle bus provided & there is a public bus stop outside the hotel entrance which takes you into Funchal. There are no restaurants or shops in the local vicinity you can walk to.

We enjoyed staying here very much. The hotel has a gorgeous view over the ocean and Funchal. There is an amazing terrace with garden and pool which was fantastic. The staff was super friendly. The restaurant food options are limited for vegetarians but the salads, fish and pasta were great. Only downside was that there is no gym, toiletry products are limited (shampoo and shower gel in one; no conditioner) and the hotel is located on a little street so you can hear an occasional car or bike driving past. We had their newly renovated rooms which were very comfortable. Super comfortable bed. All over wonderful stay!

Very comfortable hotel with beautiful view. The hotel has a rooftop pool and bar with breathtaking scenery. We stayed for 7 days and will return. It was very convenient - you can either take the hotel’s free shuttle bus to Town centre and back, or take any other buses right in front of the hotel.
Food was good- hot and continental breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausages and mushroom, ham, salads, cakes, juices variety of choices. Only problem for me was that the coffee was not so good - not hot enough. The restaurant next to the hotel serves local cuisine which was very good and inexpensive. We had dinner several nights there, enjoyed the food and the service.
Bed was comfortable, shower was good. Room was very clean and strong WiFi most of the time. Overall it’s an excellent hotel.

Good value for money. About 10 minutes drive from Funchal, they also offer a free shuttle. Breakfast had a excellent variety. Bed was two wins pushed together which was the only let down as you had to sleep on separate sides.

Views over Funchal are wonderful

Stayed for 10 nights and had a lovely time. Rooms are comfortable and the view from the balcony is outstanding. Only ate at the restaurant a couple of times but it was of a very good standard. Buffet breakfast was really nice, fresh fruit, cooked options and various breads etc lots to choose from.
Only slight reservation was that it was not really possible to walk safely on the roads near the hotel but the is local bus service just outside which runs at least hourly.
We had a slight hiccup when we arrived as we were allocated a rood near where there is currently a lot of building work on the third floor and an extension being built next door which was very noisy. We asked to move to the other side of the hotel and reception staff were really helpful and accommodating. Excellent choice for us

The room was lovely and had a great balcony with a sea view. The breakfast each day had a great selection of hot and cold options. The free bus to Funchal was handy and the attached restaurant serves a good selection of food and provided some local entertainment one night which was fun. The view from the bar and restaurant was stunning and great for viewing sunsets. The pool was a little cold but it was November! All of the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

The only negetive was the food it was not very good, lacking in flavour with poor presentation which was a shame as everything else about the hotel was excellent! Good hotel on a cliff top

Arrived late evening due to late landing due to poor weather.
Hotel is close to the airport and easy to get to from the airport with a hire car.
Room was quite spacious and clean. We ate at the restaurant downstairs which had a good choice, although a little pricey. Breath-taking ocean view from the balcony.
Courtesy mini-bus are provided to Funchal twice or three times a day to return at around 3, 5 and 5:30 pm, which means that you can't have a restaurant meal in Funchal unless you want to use public buses back to the hotel. These are cheap and stop right outside of the hotel.
Roof top garden is great and it has an outside pool, but too cold for our trip in April.
Our return flight was later in the evening, but we are glad to have a hire car as they could not or would not let us keep the room ((contrary to what other reviewers said) until we left for the airport in the late afternoon.

Lovely hotel up a cliff

A very pleasant hotel which is some distance out of the centre of town.Up a long, winding and steep roadway it provides beautiful views of the sea and Funchal city centre. The bed was very comfortable and the room spacious and very clean.A courtesy bus runs to and from the city centre twice daily and there is a public transport bus stop outside the hotel.

A wonderful stay at The Hotel Ocean Gardens. Very helpful staff. Room was very clean, we were upgraded to a suite, which was very spacious with a balcony and sea view. Only complaint would be the mattress on the bed was a little hard. Beautiful location overlooking Funchal. A free shuttle bus is provided to take you into Funchal and bring you back again at certain times of the day but a public bus stop is right outside the entrance to the hotel, which is very convenient also. The rooftop pool is an added bonus with fantastic views of Funchal and the bay. There was always plenty to eat at breakfast time. We ate a few meals in the Monthana Restaurant attached to the hotel, lots of choice and all very good food. The waiters here are all very attentive and can't do enough for you. There is always a folklore night here on a Friday Eve, with music and people in traditional costume, very good entertainment. Would recommend this restaurant very highly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Very nice Hotel

Very nice hotel but you really need a car as it is a little way out of town. It is on a local bus route and the hotel runs a mini bus to and from Funchal but the latest returns at 5.30 pm no time to get an evening meal. The rooms & balconies are a bit noisy due to passing road traffic. My only complaint a broken shower head, it was reported but still broken 24 hours later even thought an maintenance guy had looked at it! Fixed it myself in the end. Putting that aside it is a very pleasant hotel and I would stay again provided we could stay at the price we paid it The online booking cost increased considerably a couple of days after our booking. Overall rating: Very Good!

Absolutely Brilliant

My wife and I visited Madeira to see where her family originated and we couldn't have chosen a better hotel to stay at. It may not be central Funchal but that is a part of the attraction. It is very easy to get to central Funchal - free courtesy bus, a €2 bus ride or a €7 taxi - from the hotel. But the view from the hotel of Funchal and surrounds is just awesome. The staff went over and above what you would hope for and we will forever be grateful for their hospitality. The outstanding hospitality we were afforded was what made our stay the memorable experience that it was. Great bar, restaurant, pool, staff, room etc etc. I would happily rate it as the best hotel I have ever stayed.

Great out of town hotel. Lovely relaxing

We loved this hotel mainly for the fact that even though we went during August there was no mad rush for sunbeds. The atmosphere during our week holiday was very chilled and relaxing. We even managed to get sunbeds without a problem in the afternoon. We found this hotel to be very clean and even though it is out of town this wasnt a problem at all as there is a free courtesy bus 6 days per week (not Sundays) I dont think the walk into town would have been very safe as most of the way doesnt have a pavement.
The staff were all lovely and very helpful. We had a sea view room which also had a fantastic view up the hills and down into Funchal centre. We would definately go back to this hotel.

Lovely hotel, impeccably presented, stunning views

Lovely hotel / restaurant where ALL staff were fantastic, all of whom could not do enough for you. The rooms were well presented and clean and ALL of them have sea views. Gardens and pool area (although we did not use due to time constraints and the weather) were also beautifully presented. Good choice and plenty of food in the adjoining restaurant, even for me as a vegetarian. Staff here too were excellent and they, as in the hotel, all spoke at least three languages fluently so communicating was never a problem.

Whist the hotel is not in the centre of Funchal (why we chose it) it is easy to get around, bus service right outside that runs until at least 9.30 PM so you can eat in Funchal if you want, FREE hotel shuttle twice a day, you can hire a car or get a taxi. There are also lots of companies that offer excursions, all of whom will pick up from the hotel.

The ONLY downside for us was a little traffic noise during the day but being as the hotel is on a hill and on a bend in the road I guess that was to be expected. However this would not deter me from staying again.

LOVELY HOTEL BUT MOST IMPRESSIVE WERE THE STAFF.

We stayed five days and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We knew madeira well and just wanted a holiday whereby we could hang around the pool all day. We did this and it was marvellous. The staff at the restaurant were lovely, the reception staff were very impressive speaking English and German as if it was second nature and I simply cannot fault the cleaning staff that made our room sparkling every day! The banana split by the pool is a must... oh and a cheeky pina colada! Don't forget to order a massage too! The only thing I can slightly moan about is the temperature of the pool water, at 25o I think it could've been heated!

I stayed at Ocean Gardens Hotel for two weeks in March 2015. The staff were friendly and helpful and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. The hotel was clean and comfortable (although the mattress on the bed was a bit too hard for my liking). Rooms were serviced daily.

Downside - this hotel is on the outskirts of Funchal, which could be an inconvenience if you wished to be in the middle of everything, but does run a shuttle bus to the town centre - which is free.

My only complaint is that it took 3 days to mend a broken toilet seat and there are no coffee/tea making facilities in the room.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable stay and I would recommend this hotel. I would definitely stay there again.

Hotel is extremely attractive with excellent views, particularly from bay view rooms. Comfortably furnished with good facilities. Restaurant is good, but mainly barbecue type food. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Only real negative is Wi-Fi not available in rooms and other locations unreliable.

Regular bus service from outside hotel to Funchal journey time around 15 minutes, running about every 60 minutes, fare €1.90 one way. Plenty of taxis avai9lable fare between €9 and €12.

We thought paying a bit extra for a good location to see the fireworks in Funchal was a good idea. However, despite the location the hotel was disappointing. No bath plug was a minor irritation, no tea making facilities, and very average/poor breakfast. Very little information regarding hotel facilities. No atmosphere. No bar open for drinks - oh and New year's dinner was 190 Euros per head. Will not be returning.

Wir hatten das Vergnügen, zwei unvergessliche Wochen in diesem traumhaften Hotel auf Madeira zu verbringen, und ich kann mit voller Überzeugung sagen, dass es eine der besten Entscheidungen war, die wir treffen konnten. Das Hotel bot uns von Anfang an ein Gefühl von Luxus und Komfort, das all unsere Erwartungen übertraf.

Bereits bei der Ankunft wurden wir herzlich empfangen und mit einem Begrüßungsgetränk willkommen geheißen. Das Personal war durchweg äußerst freundlich, zuvorkommend und stets bemüht, unseren Aufenthalt so angenehm wie möglich zu gestalten. Diese Professionalität und Gastfreundschaft hat uns den gesamten Urlaub über begleitet und uns jeden Wunsch von den Augen abgelesen.

Unser Zimmer war ein wahres Highlight: Geräumig, modern eingerichtet und mit einem atemberaubenden Blick auf den Atlantik. Jeden Morgen wurden wir vom sanften Rauschen der Wellen geweckt und konnten den Sonnenaufgang von unserem eigenen Balkon aus genießen. Die Sauberkeit und der tägliche Zimmerservice waren tadellos – wir fühlten uns rundum wohl.

Die Hotelanlage selbst ist ein kleines Paradies. Die Lage des Hotels ist ideal für Ausflüge in die Umgebung. Madeira hat landschaftlich so viel zu bieten und durch die zentrale Lage des Hotels konnten wir die schönsten Orte der Insel in kurzer Zeit erreichen. Das Hotel bietet zudem zahlreiche Freizeitaktivitäten und Ausflüge an, sodass uns nie langweilig wurde.

Chambre avec vue sur mer et Funchal, lit king size, chambre spacieuse, service irréprochable, navette régulière pour Funchal aller ou retour. Belle piscine avec vue. Petit déjeuner compris, buffet diversifié. Petit point négatif le bruit de la route en journée mais difficile sur l’île d’avoir un hôtel avec vue sans route à proximité et c’est à mettre en rapport avec le prix très compétitif. J’y retournerai sans hésiter.

The food was amazing.
The staff was in general nice, esp the lady who served the snack bar Wednesday night. Can’t recall her name but she was lovely.

The only thing that bothered me a bit was that there was no mini bar price list in the room, so I was under the impression the bottle of water was for free. Next day I had a 6€ bill on my desk. I don’t mind paying these prices, it would just be good to be notified about costs beforehand.

Der Service im Hotel war sehr gut. Das Personal war immer sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Die Zimmer sind angenehm groß und der Ausblick (wir hatten Bayview) auf die Stadt ist Klasse. Schlafen mit offenem Fenster geht durch die nahe Straße nicht wirklich.
Vom Hotel aus gibt es morgens und abends einen Shuttle in die Stadt.

Bien ubicado, aunque se necesita coche para mayor comodidad, por la distancia al centro de Funchal. Hay servicio de autobús público en la puerta, y privado con horario concreto que pone el hotel.
Vistas inmejorables de la ciudad.
Habitación amplia, y bien mantenida, aunque se va notando que precisa renovación. No muy ruidosa.
Desayuno buffet variado y rico, incluido en la habitación.
Zona de piscina adecuada. Bebidas en la piscina un pelín caras...
En general muy bien!

la vue .le service des employées.le cadre.par contre très décevant le bruit.on devrait appeler la rue du bus.de cinq heures du matin a 23 heures le soir.il faut aimer le bruit.

Hervorragend die Dachterrasse mit Pool und toller Gartenanlage, unser genialer Ausblick über Funchal,
der kostenlose Shuttleservice in die Stadt sowie die Linienbushaltestelle vor der Haustür.
Weniger hat uns das eintönige Wurst- und Käseangebot im 4-Sterne-Hotel gefallen.
Unverständlich war uns, im Zeitalter von Nachhaltigkeit und steigendem Umweltbewusstsein, der tägliche Handtuchtausch, Kein vorhandenes Hinweisschild für die Handhabung mit der Schmutzwäsche.
Durch die direkte Lage an einer Hauptstraße war der Straßenlärm laut .

sehr freundliches Personal, Zimmer mit Ausblick auf den Atlantik und Funchal. Etwas störend ist die Straße unmittelbar vor dem Hotel. Lokaler Bus hält vor dem Hotel. Kostenloser Hoteltransfer nach Funchal.

Die Servicemitarbeiter sind sehr aufmerksam und freundlich. Das Hotel und besonders der Außenbereich ist sehr ansprechend.
Leider liegt das Hotel direkt an der Hauptstrasse ,dadurch viel Verkehrslärm,so das der Balkon von uns nicht genutz werden konnte.
Ausserdem wurde gerade renoviert, es herrschte von Morgens bis Abends Baulärm.
Eine Erholung war wegen der starken Lärmbelästigung nur ausserhalb des Hotels möglich, sehr schade.

premesso che é la seconda volta che passo le mie vacanze a Madera
presso l'hotel Ocean Gardens quindi ero rimasto soddisfatto anche la prima volta ma questa volta lo sono ancor di più visto che avevo prenotato una camera doppia e mi sono ritrovato in una bellissima suite
senza pagare nessun supplemento . Vorrei però dare qualche suggerimento: nella suite 220 c'é il piatto doccia rotto e il telefono doccia da cambiare, sarebbe stato meglio che lo dicessi al ricevimento ma é difficile spiegare alcune cose tecniche se non conosci la lingua inoltre i camerieri dovrebbero fare più attenzione al buffet delle colazioni.
l'hotel Ocean Gardens é una struttura in una posizione incantevole con vista oceano meravigliosa e pertanto nell'insieme consigliatissima

Die Unterkunft ist an einem guten Standort. Leider stark befahrene Strasse vor den Zimmern. Beanstanden müssen wir die WC / Badezimmer - Abluft - es roch unangenehm im Zimmer

- Balkon / Zimmerfenster direkt an Straße, schlecht isolierte Fenster (dadurch extrem laut, wenn ein Auto/ Motorrad vorbei fährt)

Frühstück und Essen im Restaurant sind in Ordnung.
