I just stayed one night at Hotel Orquidea tobe in the center of Funchal after a week's walking holiday. The hotel is basic looking but in a great location and with a balcony. Breakfast was also nice and the staff very friendly and helpful. For the money I paid I thought it was really good value.

Just missed a small fridge in the room and after the shower there was water on the floor because the shape of the bath. The floor makes noise when you walk around. It’s not a complaint. I would go back without problem. Thanks!

For the location and price, this hotel was great. It is a budget hotel, I had to side step to fit into the bathroom (I’m 5’ 4” pretty small- can’t imagine someone bigger than me) and the AC didn’t work well. I ended up keeping my window open at night (I went in September). But the breakfast was great and the views from the restaurant & rooftop were stunning.

There's a 24 hour paid parking lot right behind the hotel if you need parking (we used this - 5 EUR/day)
The location is quite central and walking distance to the city center (~15 - 20 mins)

Room was tiny. Bathroom even smaller. An average size person would not be able to move in the bathroom facility. I am a small woman and it was difficult using the toilet and shower. Although I could not hear voices in the surrounding two rooms, I heard every flush of the toilets and the sound of the toilets and the showers being used. I have stayed in this facility three times in the past and have never had this issue. I was placed at the end of a hallway with two rooms on either side of which I could hear all the water sounds. On the plus side air conditioning did work.

It was a pleasant stay, the room was very clean and comfortable the only disappointment was that there was no coffee or tea making facilities in the room or small refrigerator for drinks, I expect this now in every 3/4 star hotel I stay in as there was no facility for drinks as the machine in the lobby was not working during my stay !

Lovely hotel, very impressed with the cleanliness and comfort and very good value for money. Hot shower, comfy beds and so clean and nice. The only draw back was very difficult to park (no parking at
Hotel) and one very noisy breakfast member of staff slamming plates and cutlery eager to finish breakfast both mornings at service half an hour before the end of service. Made breakfast a bit uncomfortable. The rest was excellent and would definitely return. Lovely

Hotel location was excellent..staff was very nice...
On the downside , there's construction happening right next to hotel so be prepared to hear noise starting at 8am.
The reviews about the water temperature changes in the shower is still happening. The roof top terrace and location is what sold me on the room.
Over all i would return and recommend it

Stayed here on a weekend trip to Madeira. It is very centrally located just a few minutes walk to the main area of Funchal. Hotel was spotless, and breakfast was good. Exactly what i would expect from a 3 star hotel. We will stay here again.

The accommodation was ok, would be better if the lavatory was chipped and there is a construction site next to it, meaning it was noisy during the day, and the shower was below par. However, the staff is friendly, there’s a great view from the rooftop, and location is ideal.

Hotel was in a great location with an amazing rooftop sitting area and restaurant. And that’s where the good news ends. The room was abhorrently loud, we felt like we were sleeping in the middle of the road. You can hear the neighbors talking, sneezing, snoring, and the traffic all day and night. The beds were uncomfortable, the shower water went from cold to lava, back to cold again every 10 seconds. Overall an uncomfortable couple of days.

Situated well but was offered and accepted an upgrade on arrival. Paid much more expecting nicer room. It was slightly bigger but was not warned that it was below restaurant and roof top bar so basically noisy from 6am to late night. Cherry on the top was the night elevator broke down at 11pm. There was shouting from repairmen up and down the shaft with extremely loud banging past midnight.
Couldn’t bear the discomfort anymore so called for manager. Was told he would be in soon. Waited 45 mins and went down. Was informed that manager was still not available.

The only part of my trip which made me uneasy was the earthquake that occurred while staying there but this does not happen frequently and was informed it happened many years ago. The staff maintained calm and made you feel safe after it happened.

Fairly central position. Short walk to sea front.

On arrival, receptionist was confused. We had booked 2 rooms, he thought we had booked one. He said we could have 2 beds instead of one! I was travelling with my son! Eventually, I managed to make him see that we had 2 rooms.
During our stay 5th to 12th November, the main water channel in the next road was being repaired. Major machinery noise, dust and busy traffic from early morning to late at night. Will carry on for a long while yet. Probably ok normally.
My room had a very unpleasant smell. I requested investigation at reception, and it did improve somewhat. Ants in bathroom, but I managed to stamp on them. Got most of them. Otherwise good.
Excellent breakfasts, and dinner if you wanted it.
I would recommend waiting until the repair work in the next street has been completed.

Great Location

If you're looking to use the buses to get around the island, you need to be central, and this hotel is. Room pretty standard, breakfast excellent (and breakfast room is on 6th floor with great views). Friendly staff. Wireless Internet (free) is only in reception area, but was working consistently. Also the evening meals in the restaurant were fantastic value.

A Real Find

A lovely small hotel. It lacks a pool but the rooftop space is fine for lounging in the sun and viewing the town and harbour below. My single room was small but spotless and overall the service was personal and attentive. The 15 Euros dinner deal in the panoramic restaurant is a great extra. Remarkable value.

This hotel is not in the hotel area to the west of funchal, but is in the city centre. There is no pool or dedicated car park, but if you want a very convenient location for Funchal this is a very good choice. The restaurant does great value simple dinners. We would comer here again without hesitation.

very pleased . although without a pool (hence the 3 stars) the hotel had good roof top views and opportunities to relax in the sun. The buffet breakfast was good quality and the restaurant was calm and relaxed. Staff were on the ball and very helpful. The location was superb - easy access to the centre, all the sights and dining in the evening either in the old quarter (15 min) or near the cathedral (5min). we would go back there.

A very well appointed hotel in central location.Everything we were looking for.

We had been to Funchal over 35 years ago. We wanted to stay somewhere central to see the city snd the old town. This hotel was ideally suited and a short walk from all the attractions.it was close to a stop for the hop on hop off bus.It is down a side lane and away from traffic.
The staff were all very friendly.The foyer was large with enough lounges and there was an attached reading/games room.
The room we had was at the back but there were front ones with small balconies. Ours was big enough for our needs and well furnished. The bathroom was excellent with good hot water and shower. There was a TV with a marvellous range of channels.
The hotel had a cafe on the ground floor. This was open for variable periods but had a range of snacks and meals. The restaurant was on the sixth floor (there was a very good lift) where breakfast was served and then was open at night for dinner.Breakfast was good. We had dinner there twice.Once a la carte, the other the fixed menu which included wine and coffee for euro 15. Marvellous view and outside dining was possible. There was a sun roof above with even better views.
Wireless internet was available free of charge in the foyer and cafe. A good service. In Madeira it is also available in the municipal squares.
This hotel was one of the best we have stayed at in Europe and very good value. Madeira is a wonderful place.
We coul;d walk to all the attractions.

Hotel Orquidea Funchal - excellent value

I particularly wanted a hotel in the main town of Funchal rather than the modern area where all the main hotels area. I could easily walk to the local places and the main transport hub was very close.
The hotel was incredibly good value including a decent breakfast. The restaurant on the top floor had great views with a reasonable menu and good service. My room overlooked a building site, but looking beyond that had a great view to the hills beyond. Noise was never an issue.
I definitely plan to visit again.

The hotel was easily reached on foot from the airport bus, given that we carried minimal luggage. The building is not large or flashy, but, for us, has an extremely convenient, central location, a few minutes walk from the harbour, cathedral, shops and other landmarks and facilities. It was easy and simple to reach many places on foot and others, including the extremities of the island, from nearby bus stops.
The service at the hotel was friendly and efficient. The breakfast was good, with a range of hot and cold foods, though not varied greatly from day to day. It proved convenient and enjoyable to take the set price dinner - 3 courses, free beer or half bottle of wine and coffee. (This might have been a speciality for the time of year and when the island appeared very quiet.)
The room was fairly small and had no easy/informal seating. It did have reasonably comfortable and clean beds and a TV, with satellite channels. (These were a boon while the Australian Open Tennis Championships were being played and some newsworthy things were happening around the world.)
Most important were the location and servive afforded by the hotel.

It is an excellent hotel. I still remember the breakfasts we had every morning.
One downside is that the elevator only fits 2-3 people, so we always had to take the stairs, even to the 6th floor where the restaurant was. There was often a queue to the elevator on every floor.

I stayed two nights. I liked the location as it is central and I could walk to most sights and shops and restaurants. The hotel has a nice 360 degree rooftop and ok breakfast buffet.
As most Portuguese hotels, the walls to the neighbouring rooms were ridiculously thin, which was very annoying as I had to listen to the neighbours conversations when trying to sleep.

Der rezeptionist war sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Die Zimmer der ersten 2 Etagen sind aber sehr laut. Die südseite wegen der ständig rumorenden Klimaanlage motoren und diewestseite weil die ganze Zeit über die Waschmaschinen laufen. Das Frühstück war mittleres Niveau aber wohl für ein dreistern ausreichend. Alles in allem... Trotz zimmerwechsel eher Mittelmaß

Quarto para duas pessoas limpo, arrumado, a limpeza foi feita todos os dias. O pequeno almoço é bom e o rooftop tem uma vista esplêndida sobre o mar. Atendendo ao número de estrelas no hotel não podia ter sido melhor.
Única sugestão a dar é compor as tomadas do quarto uma vez que em 4 tomadas só duas funcionavam, não foi um problema mas em estadias mais prolongadas pode tornar-se chato.
A melhor parte do hotel é sem dúvida o rececionista que nos atendeu, infelizmente não retive o nome, apenas lembro que não está ao serviço do hotel há muito tempo , mas é uma pessoa bem disposta, super prestável que nos ajudou e aconselhou tanto em parques de estacionamento como nos melhores sítios para comer uns petiscos ao final do dia, pelo que muito lhe agradecemos.
Voltaremos sem dúvida.

Estadia agradável no Funchal

A estadia foi muito agradável, no entanto acho que podiam acrescentar um frigobar a cada quarto de modo a poder manter alguns tipos de comida. Pouco estacionamento e o que há é pago. A nível de pequeno almoço, muita variedade e para todos os gostos.
