Super convenient location in the heart of Funchal old town. Easy access to everything. Rooftop pool area was a real highlight. Room was nice - but not large for a 4-person family. However, the two couches were great for our two kids to sleep on. Morning breakfast was a little underwhelming, but service overall was very good.

We were pleased to have our room available for early check in (1 pm) as it was a rainy day. Check-in was fast, friendly and efficient. Breakfast choices were excellent although the buffet room often became crowded. Breakfast staff were efficient in removing plates, cleaning tables. We had appetizers and wine at the Noz Restaurant and the hummus and olive tapenade was excellent. Check-out early in the morning (4:30 am) was efficient and helpful. Amenities over New Years were excellent. The location is Old Town Funchal is near to many activities and sights.

Just back from 4 nights in this wonderful hotel. It is located right in the heart of Old Town Funchal, a block from the Cathedral, two blocks from the waterfront and near several great restaurants. Even though the hotel is in the middle of a pedestrian area, our room was very quiet. We had a junior suite and it was excellent value, with a large room, spacious walk-in shower, fluffy towels and bathroom amenities. Our rate included a full breakfast buffet, cooked-to-order eggs and pancakes. Staff was extremely helpful and courteous. There is also a nice restaurant for lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor seating and a rooftop bar. I would definitely stay again at this property.

Perfect location! Close to all things Funchal. The rooftop pool was great and had a fantastic view. The restaurant is fine but better choices can be found off site. The breakfast is excellent though.

Our stay of 2 nights was excellent. Staff was very helpful with any questions we had. We arrived early and they were accommodating to hold our luggages while we explored the area. The hotel is located at the heart of downtown a minute away from the famous colorful Madeira sign. Highly recommend this hotel.

The location is perfect. You can easily walk to the marina, cable cars, shopping and dining. The room was great and the bed and pillows were exceptional. Breakfast is fine and coffee is a self service machine which was disappointing. The closest parking is a garage that is about a 7-10 minute walk. Street parking is impossible.

IT IS NOT SAFE - RAMPANT CRIME IN LISBON

Service was impeccable but Lisbon is NOT safe! My daughter and her husband were cornered by 4 thieves with 2 more blocking the top and bottom of the street (with umbrellas hanging) just a few blocks from hotel before 11pm. They wanted money and my daughter alerted the security/bouncers of nearby bars and clubs who were watching but did nothing to stop an assault on tourists. She actually yelled \" you see whats happening, will you do something?\" They just looked on with disinterest. My son in law, a big and fit guy, threw 10 Euro at them and ran into a bar while the thieves yelled that they will wait for them to exit and follow them back. They finally left with a large group of exiting people and made it safely back, but beware, it is not safe and security/bouncers are in on the crime and will not help you! I WILL NEVER VISIT LISBON AGAIN - GARFITI ON WALLS SAYS : TOURISTS GO HOME - I WOULD OBLIGE THEM!

A short but lovely stay

We stayed only for 1 night but really great location to walk around Funchal. Rooms are large for Europe and quite comfortable. Minifridge and welcome chocolates quite nice. The only thing I would note is that there are very few chairs in the rooftop bar/pool area so almost impossible to find a spot. Breakfast is delicious and plentiful. Would stay here again for sure.

Loved our stay!

We loved our stay at Barceló. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The pool was a great place to spend a couple hours in the afternoon. The only thing that could have made our stay better would be to have parking closer but the walk wasn’t bad at all. Great breakfast too!

We loved our stay at the Barcelo. The room was very clean. The king sized bed was very comfortable as was the sofa bed which our daughter slept on. There was plenty of room in our room which was the standard basic room for 3 people. We loved the shower as well. The breakfasts were amazing and we really liked how the hotel opened up onto the main street where you could dine. The rooftop had amazing views and the decor and service was fantastic. A couple of times the water bottle wasn’t replenished (1 bottle is free per night) but when calling reception, they quickly gave us one. We would like to come back and recommend the Barcelo which is also located perfectly for visiting Funchel. The staff were very nice as well.

What kills this hotel is WiFi barely works no doorman or help with luggage , minor but lame they don’t take Amex which is fine but you can reserve the room with Amex ???? Is this an international brand? Also when attempting to charge a drink at the pool on the Terrace I was told I can’t charge it to the room unless the front desk gives permission ? And the took a 200€ hold when I checked in …. Lame point 3 = Fail nice place but these are basic amenities at €350 a night ….

I stayed at Barcelo for 4 nights with my friend in a junior suite. The room/bathroom was nice and clean upon arrival and the room was a good size for two people. Breakfast was included and it was great. It included lots of fresh fruit, fresh made omelettes with all the standard accompaniments and a nice assortment of pastries as well fresh juices, coffee and tea. Staff was very friendly and polite upon check-in and throughout the stay. The location was great as it was walking distance from many of the restaurants we went to and very close to the main road along the waterfront. My only complaint is the housekeeping. Upon arrival there were no pool towels in our room. There were multiple days where there were dirty dishes left in the room and we were not given clean drinking glasses. Also there were multiple days where they did not top up the bottled water.

A good central location in the old town. Breakfast was amazing and we enjoyed the rooftop terrace. Rooms were well designed. However, the hotel isn't as fancy as other 5 star resorts in the Funchal! Pool is much smaller than the pictures make it look.

Great stay right downtown. This hotel did a great job acknowledging a special stay and making us feel welcome. Location could not be better for walking to most anything downtown, rooms and products nice, and breakfast was exceptional.
Cons- parking is so confusing. They have no parking at hotel or really nearby with no directions before checking in to get to parking garages. Closest was 10 minute walk in mall parking garage. Hotel is surrounded by one ways and blocked off streets that make it even harder. Also rooms on the backside (away from water) have zero views. Looking right into a gross building covered in pigeon poop. The alley below start moving and shaking at about 6:30am and can be heard very loud in room, even on 3rd floor.

Nice Hotel, lovely rooms , friendly reception staff and breakfast staff good breakfast , great location . Lovely Rooftop pool but was let down by a young man running it that clearly needs training on the service and approach you expect of a 5 star hotel . As an example I ordered a drink and his first response was how are you paying for that , Lovely! . Just made us feel like an inconvenience in general the couple of days we visited and didn’t treat anybody any differently. I would also suggest they try a put a bit of vibrancy the hotel , no background music by the pool and the bar was literally empty every night. Both these experiences would put us off staying again

The hotel was ok.
The staff were friendly and informative. However, the lighting in both the room and about the hotel was dreadful. I had to choose a breakfast table beneath a spotlight to see my breakfast- not good at all. Why was everywhere so dim?

Super convenient and picturesque spot right in the heart of old town Funchal and within walking distance of marina, shops, restaurants and cable car. Lovely rooftop with views over town and marina with bar and small (heated) pool. Breakfast great but eating area not so charming - might have been better using restaurant at front of hotel for more space and light. We stayed in deluxe room city view at front of hotel and were pleasantly surprised by small balcony with sea views - the only downside of this was live music outside noisy if you wanted an early night !!! Overall very glad we stayed here rather than in built up soulless tourist area on other side of marina.

Nice hotel but loud nightclub next door

There is a nightclub (not prt of the hotel) playing loud music until 4 am on Saturday morning. This made sleeping very difficult. The staff were fantastic. Attention to detail on room cleaning could be improved. The free mini bar was appreciated. Nice views from the rooftop.

They offered one of the best breakfast buffets I have had in a hotel, lovely touches in room over the Christmas period. Room was well appointed, but bathroom showing a bit of wear and tear. The shower pressure was great though. Most of the reception staff were friendly. The restaurant attached to the hotel was really nice. Overall, a great stay and would come back again.

Failing on a few levels - not recommended sadly.

Unfortunately not such a good stay. The hotel just isn’t 5* on many levels.

We had issues with the noise at the hotel, being located on a little street with a very loud bar a few doors down which made a lot of noise until 04:00 on a Thursday night. Not the hotels fault per se but they were aware of it and should have let us know or offered another room.

We arrived at breakfast at 10:00 to find scraps of food and a really poor collection of food. Quality and variety was lacking for a supposed 5* hotel. Coffee was self served on a machine that was not good at all.

We upgraded to a suite, no bath, a small sofa… really no point in upgrading at all.

Some of the staff were lovely, as is often the case on the island. Some were less engaging and interested.

There is no parking available at, or near, the hotel. 10 minute walk away.

We were very irritated with the parking situation. There is no onsite parking. Upon checking in we were given two public locations that we can use which were roughly a quarter a mile away. There were no in and out privileges. The parking venue operating hours weren’t convenient for us as we had an early departure flight. Street parking was limited and during our stay, we never found a spot. They were either reserved or occupied.

We contemplated moving to another location, but after realizing the Christmas Market was just around the corner, this more than made up for the parking issue and stayed. We did cut our stay one day as we had no access to our car due to the parking operating hours. We would not have been able to return our car before our flight home.

The hotel is beautiful in a very beautiful surrounding area. There are convenient dining options and one was recommended by a hotel staff which we enjoyed. The hotel served delicious breakfast with so many options accommodating various palate. Most of all, the staff is top notched.

Despite being annoyed with the parking issue, my husband and I ended up loving this hotel and plan to return to this hotel with other family members. If you do stay in this area, ditch the car. It’s just a headache to have one. Taxis are available to distant sites for reasonable rates. In fact, we did not need our car until the last day.

Definitely a nice hotel with a lot of amenities offered. Location is right outside the seaside and walkable to the CR7 museum and the cable car. The only reason why I gave 1-star short of full star is that the parking is actually at the hotel of close to the hotel. There are 3 parking solutions given 1) close to the cable car station 2) parking at the Plaza Forum and 3) street parking. The only one that is “close” to the hotel is street parking and given you are in the city it’s actually quite hard to navigate and get to the street parking. The other indoor parking facilities is not 24/7. Some days it actually closes and also a bit of a walk away from the hotel so if you have luggage or other items that can’t be rolled on wheels it may take a few steps to get from parking to hotel. Otherwise it’s a good hotel, very posh. But I definitely wouldn’t say “parking is available” at this hotel because it’s 1) far away and 2) not 24/7 accessible.

Breakfast excellent, all you could wish for, and very comfortable reception area. A luxurious hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. We would definitely choose to come to Hotel Barcelo again, our stay was magical!
More drawers for clothes would be useful, also our shower caused water to flow on to the bathroom floor unless we put towels on the entry floor.

The hotel and room were pretty much as shown online. One small issue with bedding (which is why I'm giving only 4 stars) but that was rectified by the time we returned to room on first day. All staff very warm, friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet one of the best I have ever experienced. Great location for views, transport to and from airport and for buses to take you around Funchal. Lots of local amenities nearby. Restaurant in hotel a bit pricey but worth it for the quality of food and service provided.

The one thing we weren’t used to was when we left the room the air conditioner went off and when you return you must remember to turn it back on, we forgot a few times and the room would get warm fast! We never stayed in a room that wouldn’t allow the a/c to stay on.

The Barcelo Funchal Oldtown hotel is the hotel to stay if you want to be right in the center of the historic district of Funchal and right across from the Lido Promenade and from the Cathedral. It is walking distance to all of Funchal sightseeing sites. This is a wonderful hotel. It is very clean and nicely decorated. The rooms are of a nice size and the bathrooms are impeccable. The lobby and the bar area are lovely and spacious. The breakfast offerings are generous - with a very wide assortments of items. (They even make the omelettes and fried eggs to your liking.) The hotel has a super nice rooftop pool area (on the 5th floor), with an infinity pool and with panoramic views of Funchal. (It also has a spa and a small gym - which we did not get to use.) As this hotel is located in the very center of the oldtown, there are plenty of restaurants right outside and around the hotel, as well as many shops of all kinds (e.g., gift, clothing, gelatto stores). Right around the hotel, there is even a taxi stand and even a McDonalds!) This hotel is very well maintained (I was told that it was recently opened - so all rooms, bathrooms, etc, appear as brand new.) The reception staff is terrific, and if you have a late flight out of Madeira, this hotel has a safe room right behind the reception area where you can store your luggage after you check out of the hotel and which you can pick up before you leave for the airport. When I return to Madeira, I will definitely stay here.
