Listed as an air conditioned room and it was not. It has a non functioning air conditioning unit that just blows air. Staff was incredibly rude would pick up the phone in front of you instead of greeting you and asking you to wait a minute or helping you. Staff never addressed the ac issue. Door lock was not great. Pictures are probably from when they first opened, the lights were falling off the wall and hanging all sideways, shower leaked and wasn’t adjustable so you could actually use it. No sage place to drop off luggage

The room was freezing in December so I had to keep the windows closed mostly, however opening them during cooking as much as possible. I will admit this was not totally sufficient to air the room out from the cooking.

Cleaner and manager being very rude and insistant on entering the room, during middle of COVID times, due to the food smell, I told them I would open windows to air room. The rudeness was uneccessary and I cancelled my future bookings and had a great month in other hotels/apartments with no similar issues, becuase these hotels had good ventilation and/or heating.

The hotel needs to have large scale renovation. The reception entrance is dark and un-inviting. The TV in the room was outdated by at least 20 years. After using the toilet or shower I would be deafened by the pipes making a terrible whining noise. The Shower curtain rails need to raised because the shower curtains are bunched up at the bottom of the shower tray.

The room and bed sheets were clean and neat.

Property is in need of updating. We were unable to access the bathroom easily. The door would not open fully and you had to squeeze through a gap. There were no hooks to hang your clothes, or enough shelf space for 2 person’s toiletries. Shower curtain was far too long for the bath. It was too small to move in the bathroom. Kitchenette was not
equipped well. Unmatched crockery, not enough cutlery (no knives or teaspoons) and damaged forks. Kitchen rug was not very clean. No drawers or shelves to put clothes away. Only a hanging
wardrobe. Unable to open the shutters fully, to allow light into the room. No ‘stays’ on shutters to stop them banging in the wind. Cloth on sofa and dining chairs needs to be cleaned, as showing lots of stains. Breakfast room was ok, if you were indoors. However, if you sat on the terrace you were faced with pigeons that would peck at your feet and climb on the tables! There was no air conditioning or fan in the room. To get cooler air you had to open the window, but this meant it got very noisy in the room, making it difficult to sleep as the was constant traffic outside. Bed was comfortable, however, my friend and I have both come home with a lot of bites (especially on the last night). Possible bed bug bites. This was reported to staff.

Good, clean, basic accommodation. Great location for seeing funchal and the sights of the Island. If Wifi is important to you, it was a bit hit and miss but there was a note in the room from the manager to say upgrade work was being done. The studio apartment had a fridge freezer, microwave and basic stove top, useful for bits and pieces but not well enough equipt for a full meal preparation. Bathroom was a bit cramped, toilet, bidet & half bath with shower over in very small space.

Great location, plus the aerobus stops at La Vie shopping centre which is just a couple minutes walk away. Receptionist who greeted us was very friendly and welcoming. Our room was in a separate building a few doors down from reception, which wasn't a problem. Our room overlooked the patio terrace, which might've been annoying if other people decided to use it, but during our stay we didn't notice anyone else out there (it was also a nice place for us to use the wi-fi as it only worked in our room if we stood in the doorway). Minor downsides: the shower gel dispenser was empty... the hallways were very echoey so on our first night we heard loud, drunk people in the early hours of the morning hanging around (it was a Saturday, but this didn't haoproblem didn't persist) ... breakfast choice was limited too (and some people may be annoyed by the pigeons that linger on the balcony for food, however we found it funny). Overall, good value for money, didn't encounter any major problems. I'd recommend the vegan restaurant that is a minute's walk away, it's apparently the only vegan restaurant in Funchal and it was great, felt lucky to be so near it.

Quaint Hotel in the Heart of things!

We had a great stay at Hotel Columbo!! :-) It was was really quaint and clean with lovely parquet flooring and was as good as other bespoke boutique hotels. It was well located, very near the marina (approx 5 mins) La Vie Shopping centre (2 mins) Santa Clara Monastery around the corner with the de Freitas museum even closer. The old town was approx. 10 mins walk so it's very well located and seems to be permanently busy. Everything was great, 24 hour reception, the lift worked, breakfast was plentiful and tasty, with a great view to the ocean and the staff were very helpful and polite! We had a great time! Highly recommended! Thank you Hotel Columbo :-)

A very basic, dated, hotel in a good location

As a solo traveler, who just needed a bed for the night, a basic bathroom and a good central location this fitted the billl.
It is not a place for a romantic night away or a family.
It was good value, being not a lot more expensive than a hostel.
Breakfast was quite good. Boiled eggs, cereal, rolls, toast, yoghurts, apples, bananas, tea, coffee
There are hundreds of hotels on the island. Most will be of a higher quality but they will also be much further away from the town centre.
This spot was ideal for walking to restaurants, seafront and old and new town.

Located in the old part of Funchal,easy to get to parks and museums,modern part just a few minutes walk. Restaurants and cafes literally on the door step. Good quality buffet breakfast, staff very helpful. The bed mattresses were a bit lumpy. TV obviously expected to be mostly in Portugese- the only english programme of poor quality. Would suggest management to connect to some better quality english and german,swiss etc. news programmes. This would appeal to their international clientele. However, have no hesitation in recommending the hotel.

Location is the best, the rest is just ok.

Overall, because of the fact that we were only sleeping in the room due to being around Madeira all day every day, I can say that I would stay again in this hotel - it's cheap, the location IS AMAZING, THE BEST, very comfy that it's close to everything and the old town which is the best part of Funchal (Lido is awful). So overall - it's good for what you pay for. We stayed at 168 building, which is next to the main one, the rooms advertised with a balcony - well the balcony is so small it doesn't count as a balcony, but anyway - the rooms were small but clean (sheets changed every day, new towels, made up bed every day) bed was okay, kind of comfy, bathrooms need work definitely - the main problem though is the fact that the door doesn't close or the bottom , or that the bottom of the door has been cut, so a big gap is there - basically you can have no privacy if you need it. Maybe it depends on the room - we changed two rooms and they both had bathroom door problems. Also not very clean showers.
Breakfast is not good - we did go only once and left in 5mins, but you can go for the fresh bananas and boiled eggs with toast - quite basic stuff there and not the best quality of food, coffee is not coffee. But still, we were fine with not having the breakfast, because of the price you pay and the amazing location you get.
I can recommend the small local cafe just across the street for lovely Latte and omlette filled bolo do caco.

Located in the old part of Funchal, close to good restaurants, the port area, the market, buses. Very large room, old style, beautiful parquet floors, cooking facilities, comfortable bed, shower over the bath could be a concern for some with mobility problems. I didn't have the breakfast to comment. Staff really friendly and helpful.

Cheap hotel in city centre

Well, the room is spacious, beds are confortable, clean sheets and towels every day, but if you dont mind the broken bits in the bath tub and a broken bide and scraped, unclosable bathroom door, broken shades and a kindergarden under your window you will be just fine. For a cheap hotel in city centre with an electric hob, kettle, sandwich maker, fridge freezer, all kitchen utensils and plates and cooking pots it was a good price and we were happy that it was clean and towels changed daily. We cooked and enjoyed our staying because we are not picky people, we enjoyed the holiday and outdoors more than the stay in hotel. Wifi was very good and location of the hotel was great, just 10 min walk to the harbour and 5 min walk was La vie shopping centre where on the ground floor was cooked food, next to the hotel is a restaurant with good prices and good food and we played pool just in the complex infron of the hotel, tv is available in the room with english programmes, and a paralel street takes u straight into the old city, was happy about location and all together the holiday

we stayed a week during carnival time. very happy, weather was good sunny,we swam every day, been on three bus tours. hotel location is fantastic in the very center of Funchal, easy to find and close to all locat places of interest, beach and port . would recommend to anybody who doesn't like spend tooo.. much time in hotel room and prefer to walk around or simply stay more outdoors.

Rooms are quite large and beds comfortable. Try for a room to the rear for a more peaceful and quite night..Breakfast is very good and the option of the balcony seating is great. .My second visit - would come again. Enjoy !

Hotel Residencial Colombo

The hotel was in an old part of town and was within walking distance of the hsrbour, the Santa Caterina and the Municipal Gardens, the English Church, a modern shopping centre, many and varied restaurants including a traditional Madeiran, an Indian, an Italian, a pizza place and a hamburger place plus snack bars and coffee shops. The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and the breakfast was good value but the room itself which, in our case, was in the annex was somewhat tired and despite 2 windows lacking in light. However it was clean and considering our week there cost less than a night at some of the more modern hotels on the front I consider it to be very good value. We did not have access to free wiFi in our room but we did in the hotel lobby which was enough for us. There were very few street parking places near the hotel but we could park the car in a nearby underground carpark which cost the same as the stree during the day but was charged a half price at night whereas the street was free. However we found it more convenient to have it in the carpark overnight.

About right for the price - but customer service

The location is probably the best thing about this hotel, and is very convenient for lots of places: Main city centre, la vie shopping centre, taxis, buses, etc. Be warned though, if you have a room over the road, it can be noisy at night!

The room is perhaps a little small, and similarly, the breakfast is a small continental selection, but for the price we paid, both of these are fine. In fact, the coffee was pretty good!

Cleanliness generally was of an acceptable standard, but unfortunately when we arrived, one of the glasses in our room had a funny smelling residue & hair, and the sink was also unclean.

The cleaning lady also twice opened our door at 9am, without knocking, as there was no facility to mark your door as \"do not disturb\". She also had a tendency to block the stairwell with her trolley.

The hotel staff, while having no problem in completing requests, had quite a sullen demeanour.

Average is exactly how you could describe Residencial Colombo. Some good bits, some bad. But for the rate we had, you are generally getting what you pay for.

The staff was very polite & helpful. The breakfast was the best, with plenty variety,so you could choose what to have. The hotel is located in a very good location, close to the centre and old town. Hotel staff were helpful and our room was cleaned daily while we were out. Breakfast was very basic and the rooftop terrace was nice. We were not expecting luxuries but it met our basic expectations and we had a lovely time.

Idéalement situé à Funchal dans une rue calme et à 1 minute à pied d'une rue piétonnière agréable avec des restaurants variés. La cathédrale (le centre de Funchal) est à environ 5 minutes à pied. Un centre commercial est à 2 minutes et a un hyper marché pratique pour les achats pour les randonnées ou autres. La chambre dispose d'un micro-ondes, un frigo avec congélateur et même de plaques pour la cuisson... un ventilateur est présent. La chambre 29 dispose d'une petite terrasse sans vis-à-vis, pratique pour les fumeurs.

Pur avvertendo che lareo sarebbe arrivato in nottata e disponibile a pagare la notte in più sono stato accolto dal personale notturno in modo sgarbato. La mattina ho dovuto aspettare alle 14 per avere l'appartamento. La notte prima sistemato in albergo. Meno male che via email era tutto ok. Cordialità zero. Per completare ho lasciato 2 scarafaggi morti in bagno. Sono andato via e credo siano ancora lì. Niente aria condizionata solo un ventilatore. Telecomando TV non esiste dovete smanettare direttamente sul TV. Scomodissimo. Un po' rumoroso.

Razoavelmente bem, embora a falta de ar condicionado ter sido notada, o excessivo calor sentido no apartamento.
Foi de imediato minimizado com a colocação de uma ventoinha que logo melhorou a sensação térmica mais fresca.

The staff was nice, they gave me the things I wanted (balcony and fridge) and they didn't whine about face diapers. The room I got was in much worse condition than expected and nothing like the pictures but bareble. It was also really hot, even if the balcony door and windows were open the whole night and it only resulted in mosquitos in the room.
Location is very good and the room was one of the cheapest I found.

Hotellet lå lettvint til i sentrum, men det var veldig slitt., dårlig utstyrt på kjøkken. frokosten var kjedelig, samme sort mat hele tiden. Sofa var utslitt, en lenestol feil med. Overskap på kjøkken demontert, badet var dårlig, speilet mye rust på. Dusjen var ikke bra og måtte vente ei evighet på varmt vann. for overnatting 2-3 netter er det ok, men ikke for en lang ferie som vi hadde. anbefales ikke. Tok ikke bilder fra rommet. Betjeningen var hyggelig og hjelpsom. Et pluss.

The most depressing place in Madeira

This is the most depressing low cost hotel I ever stayed at
The room was so depressing as you will see for your self by the photos I will up load
The lights in the room haven't been changes propably seen they first build this place, so the there wasn't enough light in the room.
There was a musty smell among other sets I jab to buy an air freshener, you wonder who buys an air freshener on there holiday,well you have to if you decide to stay in this depressing place.
They only had one socket in the room so they came up with the idea to put an extra power cable to help with that (wait and see).
There was a stain it the cover of the bed before I got there and they tried to clean it without washing it of course (photo to see for your self)
What to say about the TV in the room 2m across the bed , you can compare it your self with the 2 bottles of water I put in below it on the table.
I would recommend who ever wants to have a joyful vacation in Madeira to avoid if possible this depressing place.
This place is the reason I will read the reviews from now on, and I hope I don't have soooo many reason to write a review like this for my future vacation.

Ik had geen kamer in het hoofdgebouw, maar een appartement in een bijgebouw in een zijstraat. Appartement was groot, maar de staat vd kamer niet ok. Lampjes kapot en beddegoed niet heel schoon.
Buurt is super! Wel wifi en een lift en aardige receptie medewerkers. Week erna heb ik een nacht ini een kamer in het hoofdgebouw geslapen en daar was alles okay

Hôtel très bien situé en plein centre historique

Hôtel des années 50/60, très bien situé en plein centre historique à 5 minutes à pied de la place principale de Funchal. Parking privé et sécurisé pour les véhicules à côté de l'hôtel. Les aménagements des chambres sont rudimentaires, la literie est propre et le ménage est soignée. Cependant, demandez une chambre avec terrasse et avec vue sur les collines, celles situées sur rue peuvent etre bruyantes. La Wifi est gratuite mais certaines chambres trop éloignées ne la captent pas .... Personnel sympa, le petit déjeuner est basique mais pour le prix c'est très correct, surtout pris depuis la terrasse avec vue sur les toits de Funchal et la mer... Hôtel très bien pour les petits budgets et idéalement situé.

Gute Lage - altes Zimmer

Ich habe 10 Tage in dem Hotel verbracht. Das positive sind die zentrale Lage des Hotels und die sauberen Zimmer. Allerdings gab es doch viele Dinge die ich als sehr negativ empfand: Die komplette Einrichtung ist recht alt.
Das Zimmer hatte eine Klimaanlage zu welcher es allerdings keine Fernbedienung gab und somit nicht nutzbar war. Der obligatorische Fernseher ist ca. 25 Jahre alt. Der Wasserdruck der Dusche lässt auch sehr zu wünschen übrig. Das Zimmer hat genau ein Fenster zum Balkon. Wenn man davon allerdings die Tür öffnet schaut man auf einen Kindergarten und Stacheldraht. Man kann sich also überlegen ob man von der Sonne geweckt werden will muss aber dann eben auch davon ausgehen dass man von kleinen Kindern und deren Eltern beim Schlafen beobachtet wird. Das Licht im Zimmer besteht nur aus den Nachttischlampen welche nur unzureichend Licht machen. Die Steckdosen am Bett waren ebenfalls nicht nutzbar weil die Aussparungen an der Holzverkleidung an den falschen Stellen gebohrt wurden. Das bedeutet man sieht die Steckdosen kann aber keinen Stecker reinstecken.
Anstelle des Bettlakens gab es eine alte Wolldecke welche das einschlafen bei warmen Temperaturen nicht gerade erleichtert hat.
Insgesamt hat mich nur die Lage des Hotels überzeugt. Wer wirklich gar keine Ansprüche an das Zimmer hat kommt dort ein paar Tage aus. Ich kann es allerdings niemandem empfehlen und würde es auch nicht mehr buchen.

Bien situado y muy económico,desayuno excelente!

Hotel muy bien situado y con un precio en alojamiento y desayuno muy económico. La habitación triple en que estuvimos era amplia y con una gran terraza. La terraza donde desayunábamos ( en la parte alta del hotel y con vistas del mar) era súper agradable. Todo el personal del hotel también de 10 y la limpieza correcta. El desayuno muy bueno y abundante.
Debe corregir los colchones de las camas y no descuidar pequeños detalles, tales como enchufes en buen estado. Se nota que el hotel va envejeciendo y necesita mejoras.
Tampoco es fácil aparcar en las inmediaciones ya que es zona ota o de residentes!
Nuestra habitación daba a la carretera y un salón de juegos, por lo que se notaba bastante ajetreo.

l'hôtel est très bien situé dans Funchal, les chambres sont veilles : mobilier, lits, et surtout les fenêtres . dans notre chambre les volets ne s'ouvraient pas complètement, donc nous sommes restés dans le noir tout le temps et sans vue sur l'extérieur. Les chambres sont très propres, ainsi que les salles de bain. mais dans l'ensemble la prestation est moyenne, mais le prix n'est pas élevé du tout ! donc je recommande cet établissement pour le rapport qualité prix. l'accueil a été sympathique .

Bem localizado: marginal, shoping, baixa, parque auto em frente (6€/dia). Limpeza geral satisfatória. Pequeno almoço fraco e sempre o mesmo, salva-se a fruta. Ficamos agradados com a mudança de toalhas todos os dias. A evitar ficar no quarto 26, 5' andar: saída directa para sala do pequeno almoço e paredes meias com a copa/cozinha... O barulho começa às 6:30h!!!

We were happy with our choice. Rooms were clean, beds comfortable. The included buffet breakfast was good in both quantity and quality. Overnight parking is available right in front of the building for 4 euros/night. It was not easy to find alternatives. There are quite a few restaurants around.

Bon accueil, très bien situé et service bagagerie , cependant déçu par la chambre pas du tout moderne .
l'hygiène de la salle de bain laissait à désirer ,il y avait une serviette salle en essuie main .
Du bruit dans les couloirs dès 8 h du matin , talons et travaux
je ne recommanderais pas l’hôtel pour plus d'une nuit .
