The room was very spacious which we loved it. And very clean. But the glass sliding door opening the bathroom was very unsafe and my son got hurt trying to open it , the whole door broke into pieces and my 5 yr old boy guys I scared , he had a big cut on his finger and lots of small pieces of glasses fell on his head which could have caused a serious head injury. We were very lucky it didn’t cause anything more serious than that. But since we got back from this holiday , my son is waking up at night crying because he’s having very bad dreams relating to that door glass that broke on his head.

This hotel is very nice, as it should be for the price. Beautifully decorated, great location, lovely facilities/amenities.

Once we arrived, the bellhop offered to take our suitcases to our room. It took them 2 hours to deliver to our room which caused us to be late for events we had scheduled.

Additionally, I immediately noticed our room was quite hot and flagged it to the staff asking if they could take a look. For 3 days our AC was not really working and I talked to reception 4 times about it with no real resolution. They continued to ask if our balcony door was shut all the way (of course, it was) and said they would send someone. We waited up on our last night for over 90 minutes (until midnight) for someone to come, and no one did. Frustrating experience.

Overall, this hotel is quite nice but we had a frustrating experience with it, especially for the price. Room for improvement I suppose.

The hotel and surroundings were beautiful and staff were lovely. We had a standard room, which was sizeable, however I was disappointed by the lack of storage space. Very few areas to store clothing meant clothes remained in the suitcase, and the space for suitcases was very poorly lit. This was frustrating as I could not easily select clothing and had to resort to the flashlight on my mobile phone to see inside of my case. A few extra drawers would have made my experience much better, and this seems such an oversight for a five star resort.

A 5 star resort , great spa too. Indoor pools, hot tub and steam room were serien. Our massage therapist was knowledgeable and friendly as well.
The main outdoor pool is massive and water warm. The breakfast buffet is outstanding . The staff were always polite and spoke various languages fluently. Our room was very large with a terrific shower. I loved their optional pillow selection as well. The cleaning staff folded our clothes too daily. A nice touch. There are plenty of great restaurants close to the hotel, all reasonably priced and served up good food options. Overall I’d recommend this facility.

As the top hotel in the area the biggest issue for me was the customer service. The hotel is beautiful and rooms are stunning. You have everything you need and more. Gym needs a bit of improvement and better lighting. But the worst was the poolside service. Several days people were trying to chase down servers and ask for drinks/food. Nobody is around to serve you and when you ask, towel guys can’t help and say it’s a normal complaint. The service at the root was extremely rude and slow too. Again, hotel is beautiful but you expect top service at a five star hotel.

Nice property, lovely beautiful room with a lovely bathroom. The rooms were wonderfully cleaned by housekeeping which we appreciated.
Couple of things that popped up:
1. As we checked in, a couple queued after us and were given an immediate free upgrade to a superior ocean room but we didn’t nor were we offered. There felt an underlying unconscious bias which was a shame. We are brown and this was my birthday trip, so that was a disappointing start.
2. The afternoon tea was very disappointing.

Access to the sea is about a 5min walk and through a neighbouring hotel, Funchal town center is about. 25min walk away. Plenty of restaurants are nearby however.

EXPEDIA was no help when i realise that i couldnt travel from Birmingham to Funchal. Couldnt make the holiday , told them months in advance. Even happy move date. No help or communication was given. Never use them again. Lost my holiday and money.

I recently returned from a stay at Savoy Palace Madeira and had a pleasant experience. The hotel staff deserves significant credit; their helpfulness and genuine willingness to go above and beyond were truly commendable. Additionally, the housekeeping service was top-notch, keeping our room impeccably clean and organized every day.

While we enjoyed our stay, we were quite surprised by the hotel's interior design choices. The space felt like a mix of two different eras. For instance, the bathrooms were beautifully modern and well-appointed, but they were often paired with heavy, outdated furniture and finishes that simply didn't complement them. The overall design lacked a clear vision and felt like an accumulation of styles rather than a unified, luxurious aesthetic. This inconsistency was a frequent point of discussion for us, as it prevented the hotel from feeling like a truly cohesive and high-end space.

Beautiful property, but not ideal for a relaxing vacation. The hotel requires advance reservations for restaurants and sticks to a strict schedule for most activities. Food and drinks aren’t available by the pool after a certain time, and if you don’t pre-book, your only dining options might be offsite or very late 10 p.m. One major letdown was the dress code—many of the better restaurants required dress shoes, which isn’t practical when traveling through Europe with light luggage. We’ve been to locations around the world that require nice dress code but don’t impose dress shoes on 12 year olds. Overall, it felt too rigid for a laid-back getaway. They probably lost 2K from us dining. Not coming back.

Fantastic pool; fairly good service. A little over the top on extras. For example ice: 5 Euro charge.

The pool service was not good at all. I loved that they left little cards to give to a staff member with exceptional service but I didn’t find someone truly worthy. I would have given it to Bruno. He did save me a ton on my rental car. So please give it to Mr Bruno at the concierge.

The partnership with their sister hotel for ocean access was fantastic.

I would for sure stay here again. I was quite happy with it. Walking distance to everything.

We went to Madeira, Porto, and Lisbon for our honeymoons and stayed at four different hotels during our visit, and the Savoy Palace was far and away the best hotel we stayed at. The room and view were both incredible and we really enjoyed the rooftop pool area. We’d absolutely stay here again if we come back to Madeira.

We loved it because the weather can be 4 seasons in one day so we made a point of taking a walk every morning for a couple of hours after breakfast. It has private walkways and bridges which provide wonderful short cuts and also access to the other Savoy hotel. The food in the hotel restaurants is exceptional and so we did not eat out in 6 days there (oh once we ate out, meeting friends). Cleanliness including all the toilets just top notch. Service around the pool top notch. Very very difficult to beat (Only the spa disappointed purely from a noise perspective as some drilling was going on but this is rare of course. Wonderful spa). The rooms excellent and sizeable

Hotel felt stuffy with too many rules.

For such a nice hotel, we did not enjoy it or have fun. There were too many rules. The main reason we booked it was also for the sauna which costed extra and the bed was super firm. I woke up every morning sore. Wishing every morning for that sauna we couldn’t get unless we paid €40 per day/per person. So if you’re picking this hotel for the sauna, jacuzzi or stream room, be careful it’s not included. It’s over on the spa side which has an indoor pool that was room temperature and a Jacuzzi that was cold so I didn’t use. The steam room looked inviting but I used mostly the sauna. I gave into using it only 1 day of our 5 day stay. What is included with the stay is three pools, all were cold. The roof top bar we showed up dressed with normal casual attire, but had flip-flops on and were told no flip-flops. We weren’t about to go back down and back up just to change our shoes and the bar was empty. We never got to see the rooftop pool, told we need to take stairs only, no elevator; so odd. The hotel is shaped like a ship so everything is in good walking distance to each point of interest. The way the hotel is mapped out didn’t feel ideal. For Breakfast assigns a table before getting breakfast. I thought breakfast was so-so despite a decent selection the quality was just ok. The fruit selection was amazing (local fruits).

The location is great. Walking distance to old town and walked right across the street for a lil grocery store for snacks. Hotel staff were mostly kind.

This was the most beautiful hotel I stayed in. It’s grand it has so many restaurants, bars, and pool areas that you need few days to even discover them all. The staff is very accommodating. It’s super clean and they clean rooms multiple times a day as well as the property itself. This hotel is so worth the price you paying. Also if you choose breakfast included it’s excellent.

This really is a 'leading hotel of the world'. I've been privileged enough to stay in some top hotels around the world and this was one of my favourites.

Pristine inside and out. The pool area is stunning.
Great bars and dining options. I liked the Galaxia Sky Bar which has fantastic views. Within a very short walk there are some nice restaurants and bars around the hotel. Fantastic breakfast with a huge choice.

We had one of the Ocean View rooms on the 10th floor. It's soundproof and super quiet and we weren't disturbed by any noise. Beautiful room, well appointed. I have two minor niggles which are by design. Firstly the air con turns off if you open the balcony door. This is normal but annoyingly it doesn't come back on when you close the door (you need to switch it back on manually at the wall controller). Also I like to be able to find my way to the bathroom in the night but couldn't leave a light on. This is because theres a glass wall between the shower and bedroom. The curtain covering it lets the light through from the bathroom so it's too bright to sleep (we resorted to leaving the vanity mirror turned on and pointing it in the opposite direction).

The staff are super friendly and the service is excellent. We hope to return to Funchal in the future and will definitely stay here again if we do.

I can’t emphasise enough how great the hotel is and how attentive the staff are. The hotel itself is spectacular and there are so many activities and restaurants to visit that you’ll never get bored - even then, this hotel is located in the perfect location for you to go and explore Funchal.

The hotel staff were also great in helping us plan our trip accordingly, especially for the time we had in Madeira - to the point that they even asked if we had seen any companies that we’d like to use for tours etc, rather than showing us ones that are affiliated with the hotel. Massive thanks to Beatrice in concierge!

All I can say is, we will definitely be back!

The room was spacious and to a high standard. The staff couldn’t do enough for us. Really pleasant and helpful. There are plenty of areas to relax and chill. Lovely pool area, and all the food options were first class.
Only thing I wish I’d known earlier was that the Royal next door is the sister hotel and you can access their sea bathing via a connecting footbridge.
