The Internet mostly did not work and was slow when it did work.
A 4 star hotel must be able to provide a fast reliable connection.
I did manage to stream 2 Netflix films during my 11 day stay but that was with many stoppages.

Lovely hotel in a great area

Would definitely recommend this hotel. It’s in a nice area close to lots of bars and restaurants. Breakfast options were really good and the pool area was lovely. I went to the pool side bar in the evening and although I was the only person there, the view was beautiful and the bar tender, a guy called Bruno that came from another island to work for two days was lovely! He was so attentive and engaging

Overall, we feel like Vila Baleira is not really a 4* hotel. The rooms are fairly outdated - particularly the bathroom. We were a bit disappointed with the cleanliness, particularly as we could tell the floor wasn’t swept or mopped throughout the duration of our stay. The bed was comfortable enough, however the road outside is very noisy, and so if you are a light sleeper you will struggle.
Our key card consistently failed to work for our room, to the point we had to be let in with the master key and there was mention of potentially moving us to another room. The next day none of this came to fruition, and it felt like staff didn’t really care. The excuse given was that it has “magnetised”, which we understand can happen but continued to occur no matter where the card was kept during the day. Although this sounds like a minor inconvenience, we found it really frustrating that we were having to go up and down in the lift multiple times a day just to get into our room.
The breakfast was disappointing for €15 pp/per day, and so despite having already paid for this we had breakfast at cafes instead (which were nicer and cheaper). So that was a waste of money for us.
The pool was nice enough, however there were not enough sun loungers for guests and you very often ended up sitting at tables, which was frustrating.
The location was good - it was within a reasonable walking distance to lots of restaurants, cafes, shops and supermarkets. It also has good underground parking.

Lovely gel as you enter the lobby. Staff were amazing, very helpful and friendly.
Room was spacious and comfortable.

Sadly breakfast could improve. Scrambled eggs and mushrooms were cold bacon was tough. Difficult to cut. However a great variety of fruit, cold meat,cheese, bread and delicious chocolate cake

Overall we had a good stay. The room was a good size but had two twin beds pushed together each with wildly different levels of comfort. AC worked but not very well causing the room to often be just too warm.
Parking in the garage was easy and the area had everything you could need within walking distance.
The breakfast was okay and the bar/ restaurant were generally empty of staff and guests.
If they upgrade their bedding and had a few more small improvements then this would have been great. I would stay here again if I had to.

The hotel was well positioned and gave easy access to funchal, friendly staff who were able to give good local advice for places to eat and go. Room was clean and well maintained and the foyer was well presented. Car parking was easily accessed via the lobby and affordable at 8euros a day, o erall a great place to stay

Great location - improvement to service needed

Really liked the balcony and the location, and the flexibility of the late check-in, those were great.

Not so great:
- Information provided at check-in by staff, particularly around the opening times of the hotel restaurant and room service, was poor
- No menus provided at all in the room for food provided by restaurant or roof top bar
- No room service in the evenings
- Restaurant does not open at lunch but still has restaurant lunch hours displayed which led to confusion
- Reservations for restaurant must be made day before or at the latest in the morning of the day of, no walk-ins, but was not informed of this at all (as this was during the business trip side of my travel, it meant I had to order Uber eats so as to not go hungry because I could not go outside the hotel due to work and there was also no room service available in the evening)
- Breakfast food quality was poor, very disappointing
- Given new towels that were dirty the night before check out
- One of the twin beds was really loud, squeaking quite badly and awakening person sharing room with
- Upon check out was told service charge tax had been calculated incorrectly and had to pay an extra €2 or so, that in itself wasn’t a problem, but when coupled with everything else that wasn’t great, this felt like adding insult to injury

I felt that for a four star hotel, my experience here was really lacking and I was left frustrated and dissatisfied.

Overall our stay was very nice. It's a really good location. Lots of shops, restaurants and a bus stop right outside . As a short walk to see the water and to Lido Pool.

We were disappointed because the bar at the pool never seemed to be open even though they told us it stayed open until 11pm. The pool itself was really nice and clean, though! The breakfast was yummy and lots of options.

+ Modern Hotel with rooftop pool & terrace (unheated)
+ Large room with good WIFI
+ Good buffet breakfast with plenty of options
+ Good location in Lido, lots of restaurants & coastline nearby (or 25-30min walk into Funchal)

- Only two lifts in the building, and one was out of service during our stay which meant occasionally waiting up to 5 minutes for the lift.
- Restaurant for breakfast has no windows (eg. no sunrise / natural light)
- Bathrooms seemed a bit outdated compared to the rest of the room / building.

Great area with many restaurants, souvenir shops and the shopping centre all within walking distance. Very close to the Lido where you can swim in the pool and the ocean. The property contained a large swimming pool as well as a bar. On the other hand the gym size was a little disappointing with not much equipment. The waiting area in the reception is very luxurious and overall the interior of the hotel is stunning. With most of the room very clean I did notice on top of the fridge was very dusty, but overall I really enjoyed my stay and the stuff were very friendly and helpful

Due to the Oscar Storm we were exhausted on arrival, Marcio welcomed us at the reception with no warm welcome whatsoever, not much care about mentioning the day we lost trying to enter Madeira. Bathroom had hair on the bathtub on arrival, safe wasn’t working, we waited for maintenance but had to leave with our valuables and jewellery, only when we came back in the evening the safe was fixed. No pens in the room to write on the laundry sheet. Balcony only had one chair, others had two as we could see from outside. Allison from reception was a star always kind and very helpful.
On our last day the pool in the morning wasn’t available for a swim, and after check out the first night we lost wasn’t mentioned again, and we had to keep our luggage ourselves in a room without a ticket, not very safe even though there was a camera.
Breakfast was really good, all the staff so effective and polite, the sparkling wine was very nice and given to us for my wife’s birthday.

Upon reaching out to hotels.com and speaking to the hotel about the refund of the first night the hotel replied to have no one in today to approve the refund, not happy at all.

This is a nice hotel and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We had a sea view room on the 3rd floor which overlooks the main road which we liked but might be a little noisy for some. The beds are a little hard for our taste and pillows very small, had to ask for extra pillows which was not a problem. Room was cleaned every day and towels changed too if you throw them in the bath. Rooftop pool is small pleasant, a bit cold in December though. Pool bar reasonably priced decent food and drink during the day. All in all enjoyed our 9 day stay.

The positive of this hotel is definitely the location. Right in the Lido area; it’s very handy to most of Funchal and it’s tourist spots.

The hotel owe a lot to their staff too whom are very kind and welcoming.

A few points that made I wasn’t so happy about:
The room I booked stated an included breakfast, but when I arrived, they said I had to pay extra for it.
The bathroom had fixtures missing.
The room was very basic, and not as inviting as the images suggest, but it was still pleasant.

Very good hotel in excellent location.

The Lince Hotel was a good choice for our first visit to Madeira and I would recommend it and would certainly consider it if we visited again.
However, it wasn't without fault and I would understand others marking it lower than I did. Our room was under the swimming pool (located on the fourth floor) and the noise of the filtration system was a little on the noisy side. There was a large crack on the bedroom wall. There was an infestation of ants and the hallway carpet was as bad as I have seen still in use. These issues might sound bad but they really weren't, the ants seem to be a Madeira problem rather than just the hotel, the crack could and probably should be repaired easily and I'm sure the carpet will be changed in the low season, it looks as though the stains and damage are as a result of recent building works.
As far as we were concerned the positives outweighed the negatives, the staff were great, very helpful, and friendly.
The balcony in the room was excellent, perfect for people watching or gazing out to sea. The bedroom was spacious acceptably comfortable with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space.
The pool area was great and quiet during our stay offering plenty of loungers and seating .
The breakfast was adequate with a good selection, hot and cold.
Funchal is a leisurely twenty minute walk away if the varied selection of restaurants and bars in the immediate vicinity don't appeal to you,

Perfectly situated hotel near lido

Amazing staff at hotel couldn't do enough for us, excellent breakfast, room clean and spacious with excellent views of sunrise and sunset over the sea. Left complimentary fruit platter and champagne on my wife's birthday even though we had not mentioned the fact. Would definitely return felt very comfortable and at ease.

Very nice staff, just not enough of them - often the bar in the hotel was unmanned - I waited 15 minutes before giving it up as a bad job!
The same with the pool bar, you couldn't get a drink or towels without phoning through and then waiting for someone to come UP.
Great breakfast included - buffet style, good quality and well presented.
Nice room included fridge which is very useful although not the comfiest beds

Friendly, courteous and professional.

From the first day to the last we were treated like royalty. the staff were friendly, courteous and very professional. For example, we asked for a kettle for our room and within 2 minutes it was delivered.
Without any prompting they presented my wife with a lovely bottle of champagne as it was her birthday a few days after we arrived. Someone must have noticed her date of birth when we handed over our passports at check in. Like I said earlier, very professional.

Last minute break to Madeira found us in this inexpensive hotel. ExpectAtions were not high but the Lince exceeded them by the bucket load. Efficient friendly staff were on hand 24 hours a day. Room was spotless, bright and modern. Breakfast was first class with loads of choice from continental through to hot full breakfasts. Roof top pool afforded view over neighborhood. Shops and restaurants all on doorstep

Well situated within 30 minutes of Funchal center

Many shops and restaurants nearby and on doorstep of hop on hop off tour bus as well as within 30 minute walk of center of Funchal. Hotel staff very good and multilingual. Furnishings looking a little tired and TV screen poor but otherwise perfectly clean and satisfactory.

Very friendly and helpful staff.
Hotel ideally situated for all amenities. It also has its own underground car park. It took us about half an hour to walk downhill to Funchal, a bit longer walking back. (both of us in 70`s).
Many restaurants in area, we ate in different restaurant every night for 12 days.

Over Christmas was our second stay at this excellent hotel.
The staff were all polite, friendly and very helpful.
The hotel location is 25mins easy walk to the centre of Funchal or the bus stop is opposite the hotel with frequent services to the town centre. It is also close to some very good restaurants.
The hotel is kept spotlessly clean.
The room with a sea view was large clean and comfortable.
Breakfast is excellent with a wide choice of hot and cold food.
I recommend this hotel to all my family and friends and I will return soon

Modern clean hotel with easy access to city centre

Lovely clean modern hotel. Pool area on roof spacious and comfortable with bar for drinks and snacks. Limited breakfast but enjoyable. Bus stops across the road. A great choice of restaurants in immediate area plus plenty of Supermarkets. Fairly level walk to centre of Funchal which is about two miles but only minutes on bus or by taxi. If you visit in December the lights, decorations and street entertainers are fantastic. A brilliant stay.

Small, no frills hotel in Funchal hotel district

Stayed in hotel for an extended period of 11 days in late October.
Holiday plans were to spend sometime relaxing and enjoy the sun and the rest walking the levadas.
Hotel was a great base to do that.
Pool area is small, overlooking the main road below and beyond out to sea. Was not busy whilst we were there - we were able to enjoy the sun in peace and were not aware of road noise from below.
Lido area on sea front an easy 5 minute walk downhill. Very close to supermarket and good choice of restaurants.
Staff we always polite and front desk very happy to help us plan our trips - mostly using local buses - out and about in the island.
Room was clean and everything in good working order.

We found our room to be extremely noisy, due to it being right beside the Estrada Monuental a very busy road day and night. Bed was also to hard for our liking. On the plus side rooms were kept to a good standard of cleanliness and breakfast was very good.

This is a minimalist hotel ,tastefully furnished and offers excellent value for money . The hotel is in a good position near bus stop and taxi rank and close to some very nice restaurants . It is on a main road and there is traffic noise directly outside the hotel but we were not disturbed at all whilst in the hotel . We had a room on a high floor which was probably quieter than the lower floors We found the staff very helpful and friendly Breakfast was very good . Pool area is small but during our stay it was little used and we never had a problem finding a sunbed . There are lovely views of the sea from the pool area .Many of the bedrooms (which are a very good size ) have side sea views .
The hotel is spotlessly clean . We would definitely stay there again

Pleasant hotel across road from bus stop to town.

Greeted warmly on arrival by young man on reception desk who spoke excellent English. Booking in was quick and simple. Our room was on the second floor overlooking the busy main road with a view down to the sea. It was spacious, light and airy with a huge double bed, seating area and balcony. Thoroughly enjoyed 'people watching' sitting in the sunshine on our balcony.
Traffic noise was not a problem at all, neither did we notice any noise or disruption from the comings and goings in reception.

The hotel is in a good location in the Lido area, close to the sea front and lots of restaurants. It's close to the main road so a little noisy. It's a 30 minute walk to the port / marina area where you will inevitably go during your trip but closer hotels would be much more expensive.

Really excellent stay. The hotel is clean and modern with good facilities and the staff very friendly and more than happy to provide advice and arrange trips.

I'll stick my neck out a bit here and say that the hotel restaurant provides better quality food than the local food joints. Their fish (especially the snapper) was superb, we ate their a lot of the time due to the high quality of the food.

An ideal location. Reception staff very welcoming. Good quality breakfast. Free and safe parking under hotel was invaluable. Location good for restaurants and walks along the coastal fringe.

Great location

We liked the hotel. The location is very good, close to the city centre and seaside. The breakfast was good, except for the coffee, unfortunately. The pool is not heated and the water is ice cold there, though the view from the pool terrace is really nice.

This is an excellent Hotel well run by friendly welcoming staff. The rooms are large well furnished and comfortable. Public areas ,pool, bars, restaurant super. Wifi also worked well. Really good breakfast plenty of choice. Location was perfect for me. Would I recommend this hotel YES YES YES Will I return YES YES YES

Excellent location

This hotel was perfect for buses to all locations in Funchal. Official tour bus stopped directly across the road. Hotel staff were excellent and very courteous and there was nothing we would have changed. Breakfast was good and plenty of restaurants in walking distance. We had a sea view and just walked across the road down to the harbour. We would most definitely stay at this hotel again as would fellow guests.

Lince was pleasantly nice, clean and comfortable. Travelled as a family and our request (pre-booked) was fulfilled. The staff we encountered were friendly and very helpful and provided information we required. Room was large with a very large but scant balcony; we felt it might have helped to have at lease a bit more furniture than the two chairs and a table provided. Overall we were pleased.

Hotel comfortable but basic

Found hotel to be lacking in atmosphere as public area unwelcoming and entrance resembles a fire escape exit/entrance. Free computer usage in reception but never saw anyone make use of the bar area, management should address this ASAP. Hotel in great location as Funchal and Lido walking distances, otherwise car hire a must and the hotel garage is the best we have ever experienced with lift access to rooms. Breakfast staff a bit shy but became friendly after a while, lacking some training though. Otherwise hotel very economical and book in advance for a good price.

Nice hotel but some street noise

Very good service, nice room, excellent terrasse with a beautiful sea view and a nice pool. Good parking facilities in the garage with elevator access to the hotel.
Only annoyance was some noise at the balconyfrom the busy street in front of the hotel.
There are several good and cheap restaurants very close to the hotel. Easy to go by bus to the City Center of Funchal

Bad service quality.

They don't have internet at all, although they advertise they do. Indeed, they have precarious service of cable internet that normally doesn't work! People at bar do not know price of products and may charge different prices for same products! they state they have gym, however, their gym is kind of free room with 3 machines... they set up my room and forgot the towels. I asked for them and it last almost 1 hour to get them... they said they are changing their administration, but they have much to do!

El hotel está bien situado y cuenta con buenas instalaciones. Cómodo para ir al centro de Funchal pues tiene parada de bus enfrente del hotel y pasan varios autobuses urbanos para el centro (n• 1, 2 y 4) que te dejan al lado del funicular y del puerto

Ich fang erstmal was positives; Frühstück war gut, besonders die 2 Mädels waren sehr freundlich fleißig und alle Wünsche wurden erfüllt.
Zimmer, Wohl bemerkt premium Suite Meerblick war. Es war nicht mal ein 3 Sterne Zimmer, erstmal haben wir nach Reinigung gefragt, war schmutzig, das Bad noch fleckig, staubig, keine Schränke oder Ablage vorhanden. Das Bett war lauter als die Baustelle neben an. Die Gebäudeluftung war noch lauter, da wir in 7te Etage waren. Es würde nicht jeden Tag gereinigt oder staubgesaugt. Die Küche extrem minimalistisch bis zu alles alt. Balkon aus dem Wohnzimmer mit Meerblick passt nur Liegen. Mann kann dem Sonnenuntergang nur stehen genießen. 2 Balkone mit seitlichem Meerblick. Wir waren sehr enttäuscht. Baustelle neben an war extrem laut. Empfang Personal super nett.

Ankunft und Abreise zu normalen Zeiten.
Es hat alles zur Zufriedenheit geklappt.
Sehr freundliches Personal, egal ob an der Rezeption, Reinigungspersonal oder auch die Damen im Frühstücksbereich. Immer freundlich, nett und zuvorkommend.
Problemloses parken mit Dauerparkkarte im Hotelparkhaus.
Beim Frühstück war für jeden ausreichende Auswahl gegeben.

Accueil mitigé, à l’arrivée on ne nous a même pas invité à nous asseoir, nous somme restés debout du début a la fin du check in alors qu’on avait nos valides et un enfant. 4 carrelages différents dans la sdb, je vous laisse imaginer les rénovations, aucune pression d’eau, une galère pour enlever le shampooing des yeux du petit. Il y avait un rideau plastique quand on prenait la douche, car il s’agit d’une baignoire à la base… et le meilleur pour la fin… l’isolation, on entendait absolument tout ! Les gens qui passaient dans la rue, les voitures, les gens qui passent dans le couloir, le voisin du dessus qui prend sa douche, tout y passe. Je suis sur de ne pas revenir, même si j’ai adoré discuter avec les femmes de ménage très agréables.
