We thoroughly enjoyed our 7night stay at The Residence (30/8/25-5/9/25) and would definitely recommend.
The apartment was modern, clean, very roomy, bedroom, 2 bathrooms, lounge area, dining area, a very well equipped kitchen and balcony.
Staff were welcoming and friendly.
The gardens and pool area were absolutely beautiful and well maintained.
The hotel complex is huge and has everything you could possibly want or need but it is very easy to get disorientated and lost!

Madeira is a beautiful island we would definitely like to return.

We had a really nice view from our room of the beach below. The room was spacious and very clean. For me the bed was not very comfortable as I am a side sleeper and the mattress was fairly hard. It wasn’t really close to old town, so we had to get transportation back and forth.

Great, but beware of ants

Great place. Two problems with our room: 1. It was at the farthest possible point from elevators/reception so didn’t enjoy entering and exiting with young children and luggage. 2. Ants! There are a LOT of them in the room. Don’t leave any food unopened anywhere.

Immaculately kept residence in a very good area with excellent transport links into Funchal centre. Very friendly and helpful staff and the rooms are very comfortable, spacious and have great views. The buffet breakfast was plentiful and delicious and the waiting staff were helpful and pleasant and the main pool and pool areas were spacious with plenty of sun beds available. The hotel and pool areas were exceptional. The breakfast offered a wide choice and the seating areas were delightful. The staff were
We were upgraded to an apartment for our stay and although the accommodation was spacious and comfortable, the room was dark and the balcony was opposite a road which could be noisy at times.
Having said that, I would still recommend this hotel as a great place to stay but in our experience the accommodation upgrade was at the expense of the location of the room.

The hotel is great and can’t fault the staff, polite friendly and helpful. I did loose a day though because of a late easyJet flight also booked through Expedia. Alas it’s easier to talk to a brick wall than Expedia about this, not even sure they are real people might as well be BOTs, so next time will book direct with hotel and airlines.

Beautiful, beautiful hotel, lovely gardens and facilities. Room was well equipped with everything we could need including spare towels for pool/spa. Staff very friendly and helpful. We had a room facing the road which was noisy but it was changed with no fuss to quiet inward facing. Fantastic choice and quality of breakfast. Half hour walk into Funchal which we preferred to irregular bus service. Large supermarket close by if needed.

My husband and I had a great stay at The Residence. The breakfast buffet was vast and delicious. The property is beautiful to walk around. Although you cannot access the ocean from the property, the views are amazing and you can easily access the water nearby. Lots of beautiful walking areas nearby as well as restaurants. The hotel pools were lovely as were the restaurants and free entertainment. The staff was helpful and the facility was immaculate. Our room had a beautiful room, was clean and comfortable amd had amazing water pressure. We would definitely return.

Everything was great but in our room was very loud at night.
We prefer to go to sleep not late to wake up before sunrise. It was impossible to sleep before midnight.
I believe there should be a choice of rooms in terms of noise level preferably at arrival.
Otherwise it was great.

Happy hour a bonus and entertainment in the bar was really good. Great location - a gentle walk (no hills) into town in about 30/40 minutes plus bus stop located just outside the main entrance with regular service.

It is a very good hotel. It is actually a resort. Huge premises. Old fashioned in the way that they do not save on space - huge meeting rooms, huge reception, etc. But it also means that corridors are endless and the way to your room can be tiring. The access to the ocean water is not for elderly people though a small beach is very close. Pools are good. The ocean view is practically closed by the park between the hotel and the ocean. Take into consideration that the ocean is to the south, so if you ask for the ocean view the sun comes to your balcony rather early. I thought it was anyway better than the street view though the street is very quite. Buffet breakfast is very good. Only once we went to the buffet dinner but that we did not particularly enjoy. A supermarket in the south-east corner is very good. Hourly shuttle service to downtown is very convenient. On the whole we had great time.

The buffet breakfasts had a wide selection of hot food, as well as continental food, including cheese, meats and salads. We were upgraded on arrival to a very spacious and well equipped 2 bed apartment which had comfortable beds. The happy hour at one of the hotel bars is excellent value. Well worth the stay and would happily return.

Fantastic aparthotel - would definitely stay again

My Husband and I stayed at The Residence in February 2019. The apartment was spacious and immaculately clean. The bed was very comfortable and we loved sitting out on the balcony during the evenings. The hotel grounds are beautiful. It is lovely being in Funchal but not staying right in the centre. The walk into central Funchal is easy and takes around 30 minutes. The surrounding area in Porto Mare is beautiful - there is a lovely walk along the coast and there are plenty of good restaurants and bars nearby. You are spoilt for choice. There is also a supermarket very close by the aparthotel so that was very convenient for having self-catering facilities. Breakfast was very good - lots of choice. We would definitely stay at The Residence again when returning to Madeira in the future.

Such a beautiful setting with well manicured extensive gardens. Everything was spotless. What’s not to like with several pools, bars and restaurants to hand. Free transport into the old town, but if R&R rather than exploring is your thing, you wouldn’t need to leave the hotel complex. There is a green ethos of recycling which is good, too.

A pleasant first trip to Madeira

My wife and I normally stay in smaller holiday locations, so a large hotel was something fairly new to us. Overall we enjoyed our stay and will probably go back for a longer stay. Constructive feedback: We were slightly surprised that some of the views in the advertising photo's were really of adjoining hotels. Some facilities seemed to be fenced off as private. We had a room with a sea view. Although you could see the sea and get the sun in the afternoon from the balcony, it also overlooked a road which busy and quite noisy. Particularly noisy in the early morning and late evenings with motorbikes revving up outside - we though hotel staff arriving and departing for shifts? We ate one night in the hotel Mediterranean restaurant and the staff seemed uninterested. We ordered tap water to go with the meal and rather than leave the glass decanter, the waited filled our glasses. This meant every time we wanted water we had to attract his attention - not an easy task. Staff in the other restaurants were all very pleasant and attentive whenever we ate there.

But we would rather emphasise the positive. The hotel was a very pleasant place to stay. The room was very spacious and comfortable with great service staff, who could not have done more for us. Reception were also very helpful often going out of their way. The pool facilities and gym were exceptional and worth staying here for these alone. Next time we'll ask for a garden view room, (which also look out over the sea).

Fabulous, relaxing week with our little girl!

We stayed at the Residence for a week with our 14 month old daughter in a one-bedroom apartment. The staff were all very friendly and willing to help and the hotel was amazing. The apartment was big, with a large bathroom split into two (one with a bath and sink, the other with a toilet, bidet, sink and shower. The living/dining room was also a fair size & kitchen was stocked with everything you would need for basic cooking. The bedroom was plenty big enough for the three of us, with two double beds pushed together forming one HUGE bed, plenty of drawer and hanging space and a large mirror/dressing area. The balcony was great, lovely view over the resort and sea (I'd recommend asking for a full sea view room when you book - higher levels are nice too).

One of the best things for us was the black out curtains, especially with a toddler for naps! It was lovely and dark at any time of the day with them pulled. The AC worked great and was easy to control, the housekeeping staff were very pleasant and did a great job. They even washed up the few bits that we'd left by the sink, including our daughters bibs, cups etc.

If you are travelling with little ones or a baby, there is an indoor play area with toys/ride-ons which was great. The pools were all lovey and clean, & indoor ones warm enough for baby. Breakfast was good, got a bit samey but plenty of choice. Free shuttle into Funchal is useful & lots of restaurants nearby. Large free car parking area if you rent a car too.

Great hotel but not what we booked!

We spent 9 days at this beautiful hotel in September and had a great time. The rooms are spotless and very large (if a little dated) and the facilities are second to none. Location is ideal - not in the centre of town but close enough to walk in ten minutes, Lots of restaurants and some shops nearby. The only negative is that we'd actually booked into The Residence for our stay, looking forward to a kitchenette and access to the resort's well reviewed restaurants and gardens. Two days before we were due to fly, I received an email saying our reservation (fully confirmed, paid for and 'guaranteed') was no longer available as the hotel was overbooked. We had no choice but to accept to offer of the alternative hotel as it was such short notice. Overall, if we'd booked the Cliff Bay to start with, I'd give it five stars, but the uncertainty of being moved at such short notice plus the bar and food at the Cliff Bay being that much more expensive, it gets a lower score. We also ended up with a 'garden/mountain view' room which basically looked out over the entrance to the hotel and the road. In terms of food, the breakfast was fantastic, bar food ok, buffet overpriced and disappointing

The room was massive, with everything that's needed to cook.
The staff at the reception was super helpful and nice. Their command of English (and other languages such as French or German) is truly impressive.
If you are still hesitating to go there, we can only recommend to go for it. You won't be disappointed.

The cleanliness and well maintained facilities are hard to fault. Good breakfast on a pleasant, shady terrace. Useful courtesy coach to Funchal, but you need to book it in advance at reception. The free wi if in the room worked fine for email etc. Well equipped kitchenette and roomy balcony with table and chairs (for 2). BBC News as well as Sky News. Effective air con. The staff clearly take pride in keeping things up to a high standard and are professional and courteous.

Perfect location and hotel. The room facilities could not have been better. The staff were helpful and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The room was perfect ultra clean and modern with every facility you could need. Located near the lido and a quiet rocky bay. Facilities were good and there were plenty of opportunities to walk locally or just relax in
the grounds, pools or park. Transport links to and from the hotel are good and local taxis relatively cheap. There are numerous restaurants in the hotel complex with great food and choice. Equally there are many local restaurants and cafe bars which are convenient and good. Highly recommended we would definitely use again

Stayed for the first week in April. Self-catering, but booking through Expedia gave us breakfast too (which was excellent). Great pool too. There's a free shuttle bus into town that runs about 8 times a day (book at reception) and the airport bus stops right outside complex at Porto Mare. Will definitely be back.

The few days were tranquil and the hot stone treatment with Monica was a real indulgent and relaxing treat to the body and soul. The hotel exceeded our expectations. Staff were friendly and helpful, great room overlooking lush gardens, excellent pools and restaurants on site. We had planned to visit local restaurants but found those at the hotel so good we didn't eat out. The best was The Med, but the others were good too. The hotel is not fully accessible for those fully dependant on wheelchairs in that the pool we used, the indoor/outdoor, was difficult to get in and out of and doors to the garden were heavy to open. Bars, lounges and restaurants are fully accessible and there were plenty of lifts. We did not have an accessible room so I can't comment on that. We had a great time here and would happily stay in this hotel again.

Staying at the Residence was the best thing after 24 days touring mainland Portugal We slowed down our pace as much as we wanted. The garden area was beautifully kept and a pleasure to walk in. The hotel has indoor and outdoor swimming pools that are large
we also had the use of a spa and a choice of another three different pools from the two large connecting hotels beside us. The breakfast offerings were plentiful and delicious.We would highly recommend this hotel to others. In June the hotel was relatively quiet which is pleasant to us. Our room was very well equipped, well furnished and comfortable. The entire hotel was spotless - as were the streets around. The transportation to / from the airport arranged with Expedia was flawless. This was our third visit to Madeira, and is unusual for us to keep returning to the same destination, and each time we have stayed at this hotel. This probably speaks volumes what we think of the hotel and destination!

Excellent hotel and facilities.

Excellent hotel and top notch facilities. I loved the buffet breakfast and the nightly entertainment. We went dancing every night which was brilliant. The pools and garden setting were excellent and throughly enjoyed playing crazy golf!

Highly recommended

Thoroughly enjoyed the stay at this excellent hotel. The Residence apartment was large, clean and had everything needed. Annoying to be asked to pay 10 Euros for use of the safe in the room though, this is 2016! last time I was asked for this was in the 1990's.Location is a bit out of town (40 minutes walk along a busy road) but plenty of regular buses and 'hop on / hop off' tourist buses if you don't want to hire a car.

High Standards are well maintained

stayed at the Residence for 10 nights over the Carnival period. Porto Bay complex is very well maintained and every effort made to maintain the high standards and ratings now expected of this excellent hotel group. This was our fourth stay with this group and will not be our last.
Excellent local restaurants are a big part of the attraction for us so we hardly used the hotel restaurant facilities however the breakfast is excellent. We would recommend eating in the smaller of the breakfast restaurants if you want a more relaxed experience although this does not enjoy the same view.

We had the pleasure of staying at The Residence over New Year and throughout our time there we couldn't fault the Service, Staff, Location, Décor or Facilities it has to offer. The general ambience of the place oozes charm and sophistication that will make any stay a pleasurable experience. Nobody we spoke to had a bad word to say about the place and I very much doubt you could find anybody who could. Thinking of booking then book now you won't be disappointed. If the Management & Staff read this then well done you are doing an excellent job.

one of the great hotels in the Porto Bay group

Part of a wondeful resort of three hotels, anyone of which should suit anyones taste. If you like flowers and plants this is the place for you, you can sit in the pool or spa surrounded by exotic vegitation. Everything impresses, particularly that all the toilet facilities in the hotel were spotlessly clean all the time.

Two weeks in a tee shirt and shorts in December, certainly beats tee shirt, shirt, body warmer and rain coat in England.

Wonderful break for 3 generations

Spent a wonderfully relaxing week at the Residence with our daughter,son-in-law and 2 grandchildren aged 4&2yrs.Staff were lovely with the children who had a great time in both the outdoor & indoor pools and the play areas.It felt very safe and both the facilities of the resort with the lovely gardens and spacious public areas meant that despite it being half term week it never felt crowded.We also enjoyed the bars and evening entertainment which was available but because of the size of the Resort was easy to escape if you wanted a peaceful evening.
The level of the facilities and accommodation was very high and the whole place has an upmarket but informal feel.
We will definitely be back.

Beautiful hotel - we were in a studio apartment which was very well kitted out for self catering. The room was a generous size with a
Good size balcony and an extremely comfortable bed. The hotel itself was immaculate and the staff were all friendly and provided a first class service. The facilities of the hotel were also first class, each pool was kept spotless throughout our 2 week stay. we used the gym and tennis court on numerous occasions - a leisure pass proving great value for money for us. We also used the spa and dined 4 times at the hotel - the Med restaurant was the best service we had experienced - a complementary glass of bubbly upon arrival was a nice touch and the chateaubriand delicious (both times!) also recommend the weekly BBQ. this hotel was great for relaxing but also had enough options to keep you busy if you were looking for a more lively holiday. Hopefully we'll be back one day.

Yes, just perfect - rooms are huge, beds are pure luxury and it's very peaceful.
The staff are superb.
There are numerous pools, both indoor & outdoor, and the buffet breakfast was excellent.
Honestly, there are no negative comments about The Residence - it's our 2nd visit in less than a year and so glad we returned.
Last year we went to The Enotel, a nearby all inclusive hotel and it was dreadful and supposedly a 5*, how The Residence is only a 4* is beyond belief.
I would gladly recommend The Residence to all Maderia visitors.

Great time at the The Residence

We were in Madeira for 10 days and finished with our last two days at the The Residence. The hotel service was excellent and the staff was very helpful. We had a one bedroom apartment with a beautiful view of the ocean. The food was excellent and the hotel was close to many other great places to eat.

Great place to stay in Funchal

We had a fantastic time here. The room was big and comfortable and the resort was beautifully maintained, with lovely gardens. A great place to relax and unwind.

Breakfast was excellent with a lot of variety, catering for a wide range of dietary requirements. The various restaurants offered decent food and a good option if not wanting to venture out in the evening.

The staff were all fantastic throughout.

I would definitely recommend this place and would happily stay there again.

Lovely hotel, big room, nice swimming pools

Hotel is great and in a good location with lots of restaurants and the promenade nearby.

Swimming pools were lovely and always lots of space for sunbathing.

Restaurants were good, particularly the Med and Basilico. Wouldn't bother with the buffet dinner at the Atlantida. Breakfast there was good but the same thing every day.

We were there at the end of September and it wasn't too busy, although as a couple in our 30s we did feel like we were in a retirement village!
