The rooms are definitely outdated. Chipped paintwork everywhere, showerhead needs some deepcleaning (could barely wash my hair with the amount of water coming out of it). It is an expensive hotel for what you are getting.

The property was clean, convenient location walkable to funchal main areas, view from room was 6* if you want an ocean view you wont beat it. Bed was comfortable and housekeeping were great.
Cons: it is very plain and sterile. There is not personality or atmosphere. It does not feel like 5*Luxury, other than view I would rate it more of a 2.5 star. The food was okay, buffet didnt really have much change so it became very repetitive after a while and we ended up spending money to eat out.
The grill restaurant was awesome.

Very nice resort. Clean and big rooms. Breakfast and dinner buffet with a lot variety of food. During our stay was my wife birthday and the management of the resort surprise us with a cake and a bottle of sparkling wine. The resort is in good central location. Thank you so much Vidamar Resort for making us felling at home.

Promises but doesn't deliver.

A fabulous location with seafront rooms , pros are the views, standard of rooms (large and well appointed ) , location's convenience, helpful staff but as many have said out-weighted by the cons. Huge sprawling hotel more like a conference centre with a sterile atmosphere , very little entertainment in the evening, and at £1700 for a week I would have expected free parking and half board / all inclusive which we didnt get. Food was very average, and dining staff willing but disorganised we tried the buffet and Italian restaurant and concluded better value was to be had out in the town. Would not return, poor value.

This was our third visit to this hotel, but the first for 13 years. As ever the staff and food offerings were excellent, but there were signs of ageing of the property and it needs some updating in some areas.
But overall an excellent holiday in a good location but you do need to allow time and patience if using the local buses into Funchel.

Clean, modern, excellent buffet, very good staff. Well located for bus tours and other facilities. Near tourist information office. Good dining options. Hotel facilities are first class.
Downside was that we had to buy our own decaf teabags from the local supermarket as they don’t do decaf tea but do decaf coffee.

Big hotel. Big rooms. Great pools. Modern, with conference style feel. Remarkable buffet, no need to go up the road and pay extra. Chocolate fountain on two nights. No decaff tea - go next door to the cliff after dinner for that. VidaMar suited us as a great base (we didn’t rent a car), we used bus or booked trips. The ‘west’ jeep discovery tour is a must. Plus all the other go-to places. Walk to Camera de Lobos and get the bus back. Madeira exceeded our expectations.

We have stayed at this hotel many times before and the reasons for returning are:
- the amazing views from the rooms (floors 5 -10) out over the Atlantic - every room has sun and sea views all day
- the spa built into the cliff side with incredible ocean views and wonderful relaxation areas as well as the hydro pool
- the sea platform which has a choice of pools and is a sheltered suntrap all day long (we were there in December).

I recently stayed at this resort and I must say, it was a beautiful experience. The resort was stunning and the pool was absolutely amazing. I spent most of my time lounging by the pool and enjoying the serene atmosphere. The only downside was the taste of food which was okay. However, overall, I had a great time and would definitely recommend this resort to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.

Great location 20 min safe walk to Funchal. Pools and sea access beautiful. Restaurant beside pool at lunchtime fantastic. Buffet restaurant is fine for a buffet. Omelettes are brilliant! The other 2 dine around are not open every night. Ate in the meat restaurant it was excellent. Great drink prices with a marvellous cocktail list. Bar had music on at weekends.
Close to tour bus stops. Hire car company on site. We used hire care company 7m DONT!
Did the red bus tour, but don’t bother with the extra 7€ for the blue route. Use the cable car and then either return with them or use basket ride, then local bus. North side of island beautiful, visit lava pools 3€ to swim. Kids loved it. Fantastic scenery.
We did the Christopher Columbus galleon which was great fun. The pirates were very helpful!

This was one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. The hotel grounds are clean but our dated, with most furniture worn out. We stayed in the junior suite which is a new addition to the hotel. The hallways smelled like cigarettes. The hotel should add something to help with the scent, along with wall art and plants. The space was not inviting. The room although new lacked basic necessities. The shower needs a shelf for products. The staff seemed to be subpar. There needs to be more staff around the pool to offer pool service. Gilda, a front desk rep was very unpleasant and not welcoming. Lastly, the front desk wouldn’t answer the phone after 7pm on most nights. I had to call the hotel from my personal phone at one point.
Will I stay here again? Absolutely not.

Beautiful hotel, huge room with sitting room area and stunning sea view.
Dine around each evening with a choice of restaurants is great. Pool areas and free fitness classes as well as happy hour cocktails. Convenient for walking in to Funchal and lots of facilities around the hotel and bus stops if you don’t want to walk. Can’t wait to return again.
Staff are all so helpful and professional ensuring that you have a great stay.

Thoroughly disappointed. The hotel for a five star lacked soul. There were no comfortable welcoming lounges for you to relax in and staff failed to interact with residents. There was a lack of information as to what was going on in the hotel and the surrounding area.

My wife got up one morning to go to the gym when it opened at 7.00 am only to find after waiting half an hour outside in the dark that it didn’t open until 10.00 am that day as it was a public holiday. There were no notices to inform you of this.

The beds were really hard and uncomfortable.

Although breakfast was quite good. The evening buffet meal was really awful. The food lacked taste, was just about warm and a lot of the meats were tough. The desserts although looked nice were rubbery and tasteless.

We had lunch in the poolside restaurant and I have to say, the food here was really very good, staff interacted and were friendly.

We also ate at the Casa das Espetadas which again we thought was very good.

The one positive I can say is that whatever you asked for at reception, it was delivered to your room promptly.

Would I stay here again. - probably not.

Gorgeous ocean front setting with couple infinite pools. Great for family vacations. The hotel offers free breakfasts and dinner in a buffet styled which is very nice. They also have a few restaurants for dinner options. Gym is also very nice too.

If I have to suggest the hotel can be a bit better - I had wished the bed sheet (additional protective layer) can be a soft typed rather than a rough plastic film Tyler which makes every turn noisy and annoying so eventually we had to pull off this layer for a better sleep quality)

We stayed with Vidamar for our honeymoon, 7 nights. It was the best decision ever.

Despite it being holiday season and lots of guests, the hotel had plenty of staff around who were all smiles and provided a great service.

We were on 10th floor, with a sea view and balcony, and could not have been more comfortable in any way. We especially appreciated the small touches (fizz, red wine and trouffles on arrival). From our stay back in 2019, we remembered how the afternoon room service would leave small chocolates every day, and to our excitement, they still offer this lovely gesture.

Breakfast and evening buffet was fabulous. Greeted by friendly and helpful staff, there was plenty of choice - many healthy and gluten free options - and everything was delicious.

We were so impressed with how the hotel delivered such a seamless service, with no queues or shortages (new dishes were constantly brought out), despite all guests. The hotel boasts plenty of space and resource, so it also never felt crammed.

We had 3 day trips planned during our stay, but could have easily stayed at the resort and been very happy there for the week (e.g. lots of fitness classes, gym, pool tables, spa, etc). A nice stroll away from Funchal town centre.

We loved being able to swap our dinner vouchers for lunch at the pool restaurant, especially since the sushi restaurant is no more. (We hope this will come back!).

Overall, we loved our stay and can't wait to come back. Obrigado!

My only comment is that the wifi is very poor and really didn’t work in the bedrooms. Normally it would be okay as I would use data roaming but Vodafone Portugal had a breach so no data roaming on Madeira.
Hopefully the hotel can upgrade their wifi soon.
Would highly recommend this hotel- had a wonderful stay.

The hotel is located in a great area of Funchal with easy access of the Marina, town center or great starting point if you are heading to the mountains.
We as a family had a great stay and enjoyed the facilities that this hotel had to offer.
Just few things to mention, the rooms are clean and kept clean by very kind people. The pool facilities are excellent and the food options are amazing.

What a fantastic hotel to stay. The facilities, location, views, food and service was exceptionally good. The spa had a variety of treatments, and I enjoyed a relaxing massage.The staff are amazing - they are very welcoming and always ready to assist. The hospitality is outstanding - you feel as if you are the only guest. I will definitely stay here again. This is a true gem!

WORST HOTEL EVER. Trust me, this is not a 5 star hotel. WiFi never works, called the front desk every day to fix it but they said that’s as best as it’s going to get. The maint. crew said that if there’s a lot of people, the WiFi rarely works. The rooms and hotel are bare while the bathrooms aren’t cleaned very well. Towels are stiff. Beds are uncomfortable.

In addition, the guest services and customer service is a joke. When we called to fix the WiFi on the first day, the front desk said to wait for the maintenance team to come to the room. We waited for 2 hours then called to ask for an update to which they said “they said they went there… oh I’m so sorry they don’t need to go to the room.” Wow.

I spoke to guest services at the end for my feedback, to let them know the issues we found instead of leaving a review, they did not respond with empathy and customer service - they responded with hostile defensiveness and contradictions.

When told about the WiFi - the Guest Services lady said that I should’ve talked to her about it. I called the front desk every day, shouldn’t the front desk communicate that to her?

When told about the surprise charges for the drinks during dinner as Expedia said dinner is inclusive, the Guest Services lady said “well dinner is food and everywhere in Madeira we charge water”. Yet breakfast drinks are free and water is free in rooms.

Just the worst customer service ever. Have a better holiday at any nearby hotel for better value.

Beautiful hotel, Prime Location,Exceptional Staff

The hotel consist of twin towers and is in prime location of Funchal , easily accessible by walk both to city centre and the other side to Forum shopping mall . Hotel is exceptionally well maintained and managed as it is immaculately clean and running like a clock . Staff at all areas from reception to restaurants are all very polite and attentive . Tables at buffet get constantly cleaned and they attend to guests regularly. Life guards are always looking out for guests and swimming pools are never crowded and there is always space on sun beds . The cafe by the beach serves a nice selection of meals , snacks and drinks which is very handy . I am really surprised how some reviewers previously could fault Vidamar as I am dubious anyone can criticise the quality of service and generally the Vidamar Funchal . You get a nice relaxing holiday by the beach with fantastic breakfast, a nice buffet dinner or to swap for one of the restaurants on site ,beautiful spa and more than everything, welcoming polite staff who go extra mile to provide the best service for guests. Thank you Vidamar staff and management, we really enjoyed our stay .

Decent hotel. Prob more 4*+ rather than 5* Appreciate service levels may not be pre COVID so difficult to judge properly.

Given the current pandemic felt very safe, which above all was very important. All staff wore masks and there were ample sanitisers available throughout the hotel for guests to use. Staff ensured that all guests adhered to wearing masks in public areas. Disposable gloves were provided during meal times to maintain hygiene during handling of plates / tongs etc...

Staff were attentive and friendly. Although upon checkin front of desk staff did not offer to help us with our luggage (we are a family of 6, 2 adults and 4 children) to our rooms. I was particular pleased with the attention of the lifeguards who were very vigilant especially when guests were diving into the Atlantic Ocean.

Where the hotel let itself down was the food options, which were poor especially for us as vegetarians. It only came to our attention re a special vegetarian menu that was available during dinner after i made a complaint to the restaurant manager which was disappointing. Kids buffett menu was same every day...Pizza, chips and chicken nuggets...

If the outdoor pools were heated that would be a ideal. As although we were lucky with the weather (24 degrees) the water in the pool was cold!

Even during the difficult times of COVID, the hotel welcomed us with their best effort and the stay was fabulous. Room was always well cleaned and dinner buffet always had different menus so kids were never bored with it. Ocean view restaurant was another good point. Pools were lovely, kids loved them. It’s connected to the ocean if you go down few steps of stairs, and try snorkeling there with bread from breakfast. You will see some fish. It’s deep and water is little chilly but worth it.

Firstly, this is NOT a 5 star hotel. 4 star at best. The rooms are tired and dated, stained carpets etc. The bed was stiff and uncomfortable with a ridiculous oversized pillow that was impossible to sleep with. But the worst part is unfortunately the staff. Front desk check in/check out staff were rude and abrupt and couldn’t care less if you’re standing directly in front of them for minutes on end (they just don’t acknowledge your presence). Disappointing all around. However, staff in Mama Mia were wonderful so if you’re going to be here, dine there! Finally the kids club staff were wonderful and kind.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was very well run and i was pleasantly surprised to find the drinks were so reasonably priced it was actually cheaper than at home!
The food was very good overall and there was something for everyone. The evening entertainment was not great but it was not important for me. The pools were great and the poolside restaurant had good snacks, small meals and drinks. I would go back again.

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and found it great value and an enjoyable stay. It is in a god location amongst several good hotels and restaurants and a 20 minute walk from the main town/marina. The staff were all exceptional, friendly, efficient and willing to go the extra mile. We stayed on a half board basis and found the food variety and quality pretty good. We ate at the Sushi restaurant and the local madeiran restaurant one night each and had 3 nights at the buffet. The sushi was well done and amount served in the half board option was generous, whIlst the local food included tasty monkfish and chicken skewers. We also enjoyed the Thalasso Spa and had several treatments the best of which was an Aromatherapy massage, Spa prices are very good value compared with London prices. There was different live music in the bar after dinner 9pm-11pm which were all fine, and one evening exceptionally good. The only negatives were the coffee in the main restaurant for breakfast was from a machine but tasted like bad instant coffee and we found the pillows to be uncomfortable , hard foam, whilst we are used tp feather ones. All in all I would highly recommend it.

All of the staff is so friendly. So many of them spoke several languages. Breakfast and dinner were included and the food was not only delicious but the buffets had a nice variety. The views were unbelievable. Great location with shopping and restaurants all in walking distance. The airport was a scenic 20 minute taxi ride.

Excellent location, an easy walk into Funchal. Accommodation is always well presented and rooms large and well maintained. High rooms with seaview are lovely and get the sun all day, Restaurants have good menus and well priced. We particularly like the choice of Gins in the Lisbon Bar. The staff everywhere are most helpful and work hard to make you feel welcomed.

This was our first trip to Madeira and had no idea where to stay. I picked the Vidamar Resort from Expedia's list of hotels pretty much at random. Well, we fell on our collective feet! We were greeted at reception witch news that we had been upgraded and shown to a wonderful room up on the 10th floor with fantastic views out to sea. A comfortable and sheltered balcony gave us somewhere to enjoy the view. The suite was huge and comfortable and the room facilities excellent. The hotel has several restaurants. We tended to use the Ocean Restaurant most of the time. This was a well organised buffet-style providing a a sumptuous ranges of fruits, salads, cheeses, entrees, sweets, and ice creams. One evening we used the in-house Japanese restaurant \"Koi\" - this was exquisite. I suppose the real test of the hotel is whether we would return... well yes, without doubt. (I do hope they improve their WiFi speeds, though).

Well located hotel with fantastic amenities

Hotel was great overall, good staff, decent breakfast with an array of options. Several swimming pools to choose from as well as access to the sea.

Didn't sample the restaurants as there are a lot of great places to eat in Funchal and can't comment on the gym or spa facilities.

The room itself was a good size, with a sea facing balcony, sofa and a very well appointed bathroom. The decor could do with updating in the rooms - the base of our table had some chips and scratches and a few other marks and the interior design is maybe a little dated but this is my only gripe.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning to visit Funchal and would definitely stay here again

The best pool(s) and location on the island!!! Rooms were very mediocre and I expected better. The half board breakfast was great but the other restaurants were also less than expected. Stay away from the Italian restaurant, it was not good at all. Overall, I would say the experience was fine but I expected more from a 4.4/5 star rated hotel.

Superb modern hotel, unbelievable ocean view

From the warm welcome to the service in the buffet restaurant staff were very friendly. Not necessary to dine out as Buffet in the hotel everyday was great with so much choice.although busy the Hotel was quiet with mainly Couples due to the timing out of school holidays. Great cocktails and outside pools. Weather was on and off but Funchal offers enough to do and highly recommend island trips. Vertigo sufferers abstain though. Absolutely No regrets on choice. Miss it already.

Lovely hotel close to the ocean, saw dozens of dolphins one morning, some leaping out of the water, bring binoculars to see more closely. The food was very good and in particular, the sushi restaurant was excellent.

Fabulous hotel, food and staff

I was very impressed with the hotel in every way. The rooms are large, spacious and modern, with seating areas and super-comfortable beds. Bathrooms have double sinks. Tea & coffee-making facilities are provided (often not the case outside of the UK). The food was absolutely superb, whatever your tastes, a feast of possibilities. Despite the poor weather during our week, we were comfortable and well looked after. I have no hesitation in recommending the Vidamar.

Excellent service, good location

This is a very good hotel indeed. The staff were always helpful and courteous. The buffet food was invariably of a high quality. The rooms are spacious, with views over the ocean from most of them. The location of the hotel is within a reasonable 30min walk to the centre of Funchal, with frequent (and inexpensive) bus service from right outside the hotel. Overall, we highly recommend this hotel.

Excitement on the island

The variety of tours on the island is attractive, especially exciting was the motorbike and side car tour which we experienced. The staff was extremely helpful, particularly the Manager, Guest Experience Ambassadors, and Dining Room staff who were very solicitous and helpful with requests for a vegetarian meal, which made a welcome change.For the future, a vegetarian cheese option would also be welcome. The variety, freshness and abundance of food in the Ocean Dining room buffet was remarkable. Perhaps the piped music could be reviewed. A variety of cheery instrumental music would be preferable; much of the vocal music was dull and moreover conflicted with the sounds chatter and clatter going on during meals, imposing on one's conversation. For newcomers it was difficult to find one's way from one tower block to the other for the swimming pools -- the signage should be made clearer. The heated indoor swimming pool is much appreciated!

Wonderful Resort with great facilities

Ours was a long weekend stay in Madiera for in celebration of my boyfriend's birthday. Our stay at Vidamir was exceptional and we had a room with one of the best viewsl! The room was spotless, service was great, food was tasty and the facilities exceeded our expectations. Overall, hotel staff were very responsive, customer oriented and even helped to execute a surprise birthday cake, flowers with a complimentary bottle of wine at breakfast on the morning of our departure. I really appreciated the extra mile they staff went to make it a very special trip.

Check in was quick and staff were lovely. We had a sea view room and it was very clean. Bathroom had a spa bath. Buffet food was lovely, particularly breakfast. The dine around options were also good. pool area was lovely and spacious, always plenty of sun lounges and towels. Great holiday.

The Vidamar could easily up their standards to be a true 5 star tourist hotel. Reception service great. Waiter service by pool inadequate though and paying EU 7 for a cocktail delivered in a floppy white plastic cup disappointing. Sunbeds are rammed very close to each other. Why not use the space in front of the pool to spread them out?
Food at the Madeira rest't good but basic. Italian restaurant very good. Best to book tables for a few days in advance if you want popular times. Breakfast offering very good but queue to be seated 8 parties deep if you turned up at the most popular time with people waiting up to 10 minutes to be seated. Need more number staff seating people at busy times as there were lots of empty tables available but only 2 staff. The system for providing coffee at breakfast needs improving. It took over 10 minutes for the coffee to arrive even with reminders. Standard of rooms is good but need a few pictures as the walls are bare. Tired bathroom with pathetic shower.
Enjoyed hol but wd look for higher 5 star standard next time.

had a lovely holiday, although weather warm but mostly cloudy.

had a room on 7th floor with lovely views over the bay. room comfortable although mattress protector appeared to be waterproof which made it very warm.

hotel is very minimalistic, with only one inside bar area, which offered evening live music.

Funchal is probably about a 30 minute walk away with a couple of hills.
overall had a lovely relaxing holiday

Stunning hotel with an amazing view

We were upgraded on arrival for free to a junior suite with sea view. We had a birthday whilst there and the hotel sent up a cake and bottle to celebrate. The staff couldn't do more to help and paid special attention to my little boy.

First Class Hotel in a great location

Lovely welcome form the staff on arrival. Room on the 5th floor with beautiful views and so much room, not the usual pokey double! We had the the half board- dine around, meaning you could have 15€ per person towards A la Carte in the other 3 restaurants. We ate at the Italian twice, it was so good, not just pizza or pasta, delicious fish and steak too. We were lucky to have gorgeous sunny weather and sunbathed around the pool later on in the day, plenty of beds and soft towels. We would definitely return, the standards are very high.

Good points: Nice hotel, wide selection of restaurants, good concierge/guest support services, best location, swimming pools.

Points to improve: In the night there was an unpleasant noise in our room ( not sure from where) some people may find it very annoying and needs to be checked. Swimming pool could have more trees / shades to look (even) better. Access to the see and use of the piers could be improved.

Nice hotel with the sound of the sea.

Lobby was busy but the staff were efficient. Porter took our hired car to the free car park but didn't tell us where he had parked it or indeed where the car park was - apart from that we were very pleased with our stay.
