Lovely hotel and food. Live entertainment in bars v good. Staff overall excellent and friendly with exception of some of the breakfast waiters who seemed angry to be on service and observed being quite rude to some people. Other staff faultless. Room we stayed in was terrific. Convenient taxi rank and bus stops incl tourist buses right outside hotel.

The hotel is fantastic and we ate in the Italian and Portuguese restaurants. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Room was great and the hotel picked up from the passports that it was my wife’s birthday and left some bubbles for us when we returned from a Levada walk. Turn left out of hotel and walk 20 mins and some great restaurants got to try Bistrot Des Agnes. Turn right and 25 mins walk into Funchal. We’re coming back and will definitely stay at Porto Mare again

Excellent breakfast with lots of choice and 5-6pm Happy Hour is a winner. Overall the staff were so helpful & friendly (just don’t mess with the breakfast team!!).

What an amazing property. This hotel was one of my favorites throughout our family trip of 10 days around Portugal and Madeira. We were given a suite with pool and ocean view. The rooms were spotless clean, comfortable beds with fluffy pillows. One of the best breakfast buffets we have experienced. The staff was very friendly and professional. Located near restaurants, natural pool, shopping mall. Highly recommend to stay at Porto Mare Bayport when visiting Funchal.

I enjoyed my stay at Porto Mare and highly recommend it. It is conveniently located in the area with many restaurants. The bus stop is in front of the hotel and you can hop on a bus to the centre of Funchal, or take a walk and enjoy the beautiful scenery on your way. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful with all the information you need.

Overall, the property is nice and very well kept in many respects. The gardens are outstanding. The evening entertainment tended to be tacky covers of popular music from the 70's and 80's. It would be much better for me to have local artists performing their own music. Several things in our room needed tending to, but with persistence, the staff did take care of them.The staff were very respectful and helpful. The breakfast was excellent. The pools beautiful. We found a public access to the ocean just below the property on our last day. It would have been great if the staff had thoroughly introduced us to the area. We only know about the Lido for which we had to pay. Overall, a very good experience once we got the kinks worked out in our room.

Not terrible but a lot needs addressing
We stayed for a week. Cecilia at reception was brilliant but several other front desk staff were aloof and you felt like you were bothering them when asking anything. Their knowledge seemed limited. As there was no concierge, the front desk staff should be able to give you good offsite restaurant recommendations and directions. Rooms are a decent size but the really need modernising as they are very dark. There are many bad design elements such as the lack of plugs and location of the existing ones. Cleaning was poor- our mirrors had the same smudges all week. The floor was also definitely not cleaned. It made us wonder if anything else was getting cleaned like table surfaces. The dinner buffet was ok, but the breakfast buffet got very boring by day 3. They really should mix it up more. The service at the restaurant and bar was pretty poor. A couple of the team were great but many were either rude or a bit chaotic (eg never replacing cutlery, dropping plates etc.). I imagine they are worked very hard and maybe not compensated well, so can’t really blame them. The hotel stopped doing a free transfer to town “due to covid” but as things have dramatically picked up, they really should reinstate it as the walk took us 40 minutes one way and we’re young and fit. Overall, it could be much much better if they implemented more customer service training and updated the rooms so they aren’t so brown and dark.

We loved the Porto Mare. Being part of a three-hotel group on the same plot means guests have a large choice of facilities and restaurants. The gardens are delightful - full of palm trees and many flowers. There are lots of loungers throughout the garden as well as round the pool. I imagine it could get busy in the summer season. Breakfasts and buffet suppers in the Atlantic restaurant were excellent. All the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the spa area and indoor pool. The outdoor pool was a bit chilly for us (February). We can’t wait to return.

We had a wonderful and relaxing 10 day stay in the hotel in February 2022. We found the hotel to be clean and the staff efficient and helpful. The pool and garden area is lovely and well maintained with plenty of areas to sun bathe. The breakfasts were very good with a wide range of choices.

Great hotel in Funchal
Wonderful stay at the Porto Mare in Funchal. Room was spacious and comfortable with great view out to sea. The cocktails were lovely and the food of a very high standard for a buffest style arrangement. Breakfast was particularly good. The gardens are so well managed and lots of places to sit and relax. We had several treatments in the Spa all of which were very good. The hotel is ideally located and there is a bus stop right outside to catch buses into central Funchal if you are not up to the walk (about 25 minutes). Would definitely recommend this hotel for great value, excellent staff and a lovely experience.

This is a large but beautiful hotel with lovely gardens and fabulous sea views. The room was spacious and the beds are very comfortable. There was an over-bar shower which, whilst not the most powerful, was perfectly adequate. Staff were friendly and attentive. The breakfast buffet has a good range of cereals, fruits snd hot and cold items. There were plenty of hand sanitisers around the property and we felt. The only reason I have rated the hotel as 4 not 5 stars was because the wi-fi signal strength was very variable. This matters when my husband and I were trying to do our return to the UK COVID tests with live online guidance. This process was time- critical and we both kept losing the wi-fi connection throughout the process which was quite stressful. I imagine there will be more travellers who might need to do online COVID testing in the coming months and good wi-fi will prove to be very important. I mentioned this on check out and the gentleman on reception said he would raise this issue.

Great service, lovely room, great pools / gym / bars / restaurants and some good entertainment in the bar even in the middle of a pandemic when the hotel was relatively quiet. The Madeirans also have Covid 19 testing managed so well at the airport - perhaps Boris could give them a call for some advice!

An amazing hotel well situated along the coastline in Funchal. Wonderfully maintained property. Extremely friendly staff. We went on full board and the food was great. Full board also allows one to spend a budgeted amount at a neighbouring Italian Resturant - Il Basilico - where the food is amazing. We had to quarantine fir 12 hours so we had to stay in our room and order room service. I must say the food on room service is michelin star quality. I would choose this to the neighbouring 4 star hotels because of its location. Do go for the top floor room (we had 2535) which is sea view and perfectly situated for some amazing views.

Husband and I stayed for 12 nights over Christmas/NY. The hotel is very large and can seem like a rabbit warren once inside as parts of the layout are on different layers. You may need to take a lift from one part of the accommodation, exit, walk some distance and then use another lift to get to you accommodation, as we found. The staff were all very helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble for them. You can take breakfast in the large Alfama dining room, or if you prefer a more intimate space, use the dining facilities of the Eden Mare next door but this has a slightly smaller menu option. Either way, they food was wonderful. Our only gripe about the hotel is its location to the centre of Funchal. It takes a good 40 minutes to walk into town and this is very hilly, especially on the return. The hotel does have a courtesy coach, but unfortunately the last journey into town is around 17.00 and so too early if you want to go out for an evening meal. We would certainly recommend the Porto Mare to anyone who is fit and doesn't mind walking.
