The staff at Quinta da Bela Vista are true professionals and make sure every detail of service is perfect. You're surrounded by old world charm and class and it's a treat to stay there. Located in an unassuming neighborhood, you drive through the gates to a little eden with beautiful gardens and wonderful accommodations. Food was excellent. But it's really the staff that make the hotel shine.

Old fashioned and creaky without aircon and a smell in the bathroom.
The bikes in the gym were poor (one broken, the other unreadable display).
Parking space inadequate. We dined out, so nearly every night we had to park on the street.
Suites don't have balconies or dedicated showers. Only over bath versions at a height suitable for people under 6ft.

I liked the fact the hotel was quiet and tucked out of the way from the hustle and bustle of central Funchal with good views and surrounding scenery. My room was very spacious and comfortable (superior double) and worth every penny. The staff were all very welcoming and most helpful with any requests such as booking taxis or giving advice about local activities and trips. My only slight criticism is that they had no USB charging points in the room but luckily I did bring two adapter plugs with me so was easily able to charge my various devices - plenty of spare sockets in the room.

We did enjoy staying here, but wouldn’t say it meets the standards of a luxury hotel. The rooms were clean, quiet and the AC is great which was most important to us overall. But the decor and finishes are tired. And amenities are low quality. A 2 in 1 soap/shampoo is just not appropriate for the star rating. The dining staff is serviceable but not friendly, but the reception staff is quite pleasant. The grounds of the hotel are lovely-we enjoyed the poolside bar quite a bit! The food at the restaurants is good but the breakfast is the exact same every day and lacking in terms of quality I’d say. Overall, we did like this place but could definitely use some upgrades.

Relaxing retreat above Funchal!

Lovely stay at Quinta da Bela Vista, very quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed the beautiful breakfast buffet, pool bar and facilities across the grand estate.

The pool and tennis court use was a highlight. It was also handy to have the mini bus service on weekdays to go into the centre of Funchal. Great time we will be back!

We had a great stay. The facilities were very good, the restaurants were all nice, in particular the a la carte in the Manor House was excellent. The pool, sauna, jacuzzi and gym were always available when we want them. The gardens were lovely and the view to the city was beautiful.
We would definitely recommend the hotel to others

Beautiful grounds and buildings. Good restaurants/bars internally and others walkable distance downhill (taxi back for the less fit). The main asset of the hotel are the brilliant staff who treated my wife and I wonderfully. Would recommend this hotel without hesitation. Great week there. And Madeira is beautiful - did a tour of the western and northern sides - fantastic.

My son and I arrived after having spent a week in Saccarum resort in Calheta. Our flight was canceled and we had to pivot our stay here. The facilities, though beautiful and historic, left much to be desired. The room we had in the Manor house had no air-conditioning And was infested with bugs in the bed. The staff was quick to move us to a room that was only a double bed, but promised us air conditioning. The air conditioning did not work. We saw remnants of bugs but no live activity. When we checked out, the staff couldn’t have cared less. It’s safe to say we will never return here .

Lovely hotel which other than at the occasional breakfast never seemed busy. Dry quiet in its own private gardens. Excellent pool bar where we ate several times in the evening. The trade off is a half hour walk, downhill, to the town. And for us usually a taxi back up the hill.

Is this a hotel or a half empty retirement home?

Once grand back in the 1950's now very very dated with veneer peeling from bedside tables and bathrooms that should have been redone at least twice in the last 30 years..... (shower curtains for the horrible shower over bath and a wall mounted hairdryer worthy of a museum!! Etc etc)

Did not help that I had intended to book the fantastic Quinta da Casa Branca a true luxury boutique 5 star hotel at the same cost as this past it place.... how to rub salt in the wound of my mistake that this was so so inferior....

Mixed picture: we paid quite a lot for a very large suite decorated with lovely furniture and paintings. However, aspects of the room were unsatisfactory: the bathrooms felt like they were at an elderly relative’s house. There was no proper shower, just a hose with a shower head which would balance precariously on a holder on the wall and which came off twice, hitting my children painfully.

Food was mediocre: a stodgy pasta dish came with a large dead black fly in it. Club sandwich was average at best.

This is a good four star hotel. The staff were outstanding - friendly but respectful, efficient, knowledgeable and keen to please. They made our five day stay a delight. The A La Carte restaurant serves very good food with a surprisingly good selection of the best local and mainland wines, in a really lovely old building furnished with antique furniture. Excellent breakfast, too. Location is wonderfully quiet with good views over the Bay. Free shuttle bus to the Marina in Funchal runs 5.5 days a week. Taxis called by the hotel come within minutes and it costs less than E10 to get to most parts of Funchal. The hotel arranged a truly wonderful one-day trip round the island with our own driver for a very reasonable price. We would definitely go again, and can thoroughly recommend it.

Fab hotel.

Great place to stay, local buses very cheap and easy, we got the hotel shuttle into Funchal in the mornings and then the bus back when we were ready. The toboggan is a must. Food freshly cooked and so many restaurants to choose from, everyone so friendly and polite. Stunning views. Fantastic views.

Old fashioned hotel

We were part of a group holiday. We booked via Expedia and got our room €60 per night cheaper than booking directly. However, this meant we had a room at the far end of the property in an annexe block and they were not the same standard as those in the main building. Clean enough but old and worn. The hotel is up a hill well outside the city and the weather can be considerably cooler and cloudier in the location. The hotel minibus was frequently fully booked up and did not run at all on Sundays. Taxis varied between €7 to €10 for the journey up or down.
The breakfast was very good.
The hotel has a faded elegance which seemed to suit the elderly clientele very well. Perhaps we may return in about 20 years.

Great Quinta da Bela Vista staff!

Thank you to the great staff on front desk at QBV. Really helpful and nice including phoning round trying to get paracetamol when my partner had a headache!

This sounds like an odd bit of feedback, but I wonder if you should have cappucino/ espresso style coffee at breakfast rather than the pot of filter coffee. Or just as an option. Feel this would appeal as part of a 5 star experience.

Nevertheless, really lovely peaceful hotel and kind staff.

Lovely hotel, well equipped.

This is a super hotel which is situated just above Funchal. Takes about 30 minutes to walk down the hill into town (would be more back up) or 10 minutes by hotel courtesy bus.

The hotel is really well run and has great facilities. The views over the bay are fantastic. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. There are two restaurants, one which serves a 5 course meal every night (half board get this) and another a la carte. We never went to the 5 course restaurant as there was no choice and there wasn’t a combination that suited us, separately there is a pool / gym bar which has a reasonable menu and is a much nicer location which we used most nights. Room service was good too.

We would go back like a shot and personally I would rate this as one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in for many years.

Very nice hotel, but a little distant from town.

We were aware that we had booked a garden room, but were not told until arrival that the view was very restricted by trees. Our main criticism was that there was extremely limited space for our clothes, some of the rails being too high for my 5 feet 2 inch wife to reach, so that we spent 8 nights living in part out of suitcases. The wi-fi also left a lot to be desired; quite intermittent. However, the grounds are lovely and the staff were very anxious to please, and were most helpful.

Hotel for retired people with staff very helpful.

As Expedia will be aware we complained that our room was too remote from the main hotel as my wife has mobility difficulties. Our room was poorely maintained and the view was only of a rather uninteresting lawn. We made an online comment to this effect which resulted in our beimg given an upgrade to a 'superior' room on the second floor of the main building of the hotel. As there was access by lift from the reception to our room this was perfectly suitable. There was a magnificent view across the gardens and swimming pool to the sea below. The room was more luxurious and well maintained and had the added benefit of a balcony.

The staff are exceptional and many have been with the hotel for a long time. Breakfast in the main dining room was very good, plentiful and well presented in a buffet style. An a la Carte menu was available every night in the Manoir, a separate and rather magnificent old building. We only ate there once and it was very good. A snack style menu was available, virtually all day, at the swimming pool area and offered very good simple food.

On weekdays the hotel provides a frequent, courtesy, mini bus to take guests into Funchal. There is only one drop off spot which is quite a long way from the town centre and a second stop nearer the main shopping centre would be an improvement.

We would recommend this hotel and should we return to Madeira we would definitely stay here.

Nice hotel with very friendly staff, a few things could improve the experience:

Rooms clean and sufficiently spacious, bit dated and could do with new carpets (clean but a little worn).

Wifi in rooms non-existent unless you stand right by the window.

Blackout curtains do not black out completely (not an issue for everybody but I like dark rooms for sleeping), additionally they have spotlights in the garden that light up the impressive trees but send a lot of light into the rooms.

Lovely hotel.

Had a great holiday. Difficult walk to and from Funchal even for the fittest guests. Shuttle bus from the hotel covers the trip free-of-charge but finishes Saturday lunchtime until Monday morning so you will need to budget for taxi's for those days and the evenings. Staff were excellent and the a la carte food was really good. Would definitely recommend to future visitors.

Very pleasant hotel. Staff informative and helpful

We had no problems during our holiday. When we asked for something from reception, it was brought along. The beds were firm, the bathroom clean and the TV channels had English speaking programmes!. On my birthday I was given a complimentary bottle of champagne which was much appreciated. The waiting staff were excellent especially in the A-La-Carte restaurant and the Pool Bar. We did not use the main restaurant. The premises were impressive with plenty to do for the active and less active.

Old world charm with modern facilities

Madeira is a place that reminds you of how Britain used to be (well the best bits anyway).
All areas are accessible by taxi or bus. I would advise any one not to hire a car unless they have nerves of steel, roads can be very very very steep and very narrow.
We have visited this hotel 7 or 8 times in the last 20 years and it continues to draw us back. It is 6 years since our last visit.

Overall good experience, but not a 5 star standard. Sauna was very disappointing - not private as it had a glass door. Temperature was cool and the shower outside did not work.

Food was good, and the breakfast was well stocked. Bacon was missing one day, but there was enough other variety for it not to matter.

We had a good stay and would recommend it to others, but at a 2-3 star level only.

Staff friendly, although they forgot to send my room service order to the kitchen! Food arrived 90 minutes late after I had to call again.

(Or a hire car - but make sure you have sat nav otherwise it's difficult to find). We stayed in the main building, but would recommend the annex, the price differential is too great for the uplift.

Comfortable Hotel with a great view.

We stayed for a week in November 2015. The hotel is perched high above Funchal. We had a comfortable room with balcony and garden view. The garden is quite large and old and has some very interesting tropical and sub tropical plants. The hotel restaurant is very good if a little pricey compared to other restaurants in Funchal. Our main aim was to walk the Levadas each day in different parts of the island so we had a hire car and the hotel is very well placed for quick and easy access to the Islands expressway. The downside of the hotel location is that it is a good walk from the town centre and there are no other restaurants near the hotel. This didn't bother us as we were happy to walk down the (steep) hill to the town each night and got a taxi back (8 Euro). The hotel does run a shuttle bus to the town during the day which we used a couple of times but the bus doesnt run at night. There is also a municipal bus which costs about 2 Euro each way. We had B&B and the breakfast was really excellent quality.

Quiet and relaxing with great service

We enjoyed staying here very much. The location, a 5 min bus ride up the hill from the centre, is ideal if you prioritise peace and quiet and good service over being able to walk easily to restaurants etc. Breakfasts are excellent, dinners good quality but a bit limited in choice. There are plenty of restaurants in the centre anyway.
Very helpful staff, giving great service.
Comfortable rooms, though our bathroom could have benefitted from a refurb. WiFi throughout but sometimes a bit flaky.
Far enough up the hill to be quiet, not so far as to be up in the clouds that frequently cover the tops of the hills here and must be an issue for hotels up there.
Very nice gardens add to the relaxing atmosphere.

Lovely hotel beautiful views, excellent staff.

Had a fabulous weeks stay here recently. Room was lovely would recommend getting one with a balcony definitely worth paying the extra. Table & chairs on balcony so lovely to sit out with a drink and take in the views. Staff were helpful over every detail from booking reservations for other restaurants to bringing tea & coffee facilities to our room.

Breakfast was delightful so much to pick from if you cannot find something to satisfy you then you must be the pickiest person, as there was hot & cold choices as well as different fruits every day & yogurts of all sorts. Good selection of breads on offer nothing we could want for.

You need to ask for tea & coffee facilities in your room as they are not provided to start with but they will bring a tray & replenish it daily.

Only stayed B&B so cannot comment on half board but we did have one A La Carte meal at the Manor House which was nice but not cheap and we found better value restaurants else where. Reids Summer buffet was fabulous only have it on a Sunday evening but worth going. Glad we did the meal at the Manor House as food was nice but once was enough.

The pool is a nice size although a little bit on the cold side could do with being a bit warmer. Plenty of sun beds available with towels already put on waiting for you. Small gym but had everything we needed, good tennis court easily booked. no sports bar shame if there is a match or some sporting event on you want to watch. Courtesy bus available at set times .

We did ask 3 times for a kettle (being British we needed tea) but was not supplied. Rooms non smoking but people smoking on balconies wafted into our room so not great for non smokers.
Love cater quote a way out of town so no non hotel restraunts within walking distance but the hotel a la carte menu was excellent.

Quinta da Bela Vista hotel is located west of and over looking Funchal. The hotel has an interior feeling of a grand home with first rate silver service during dinner and generally helpful staff.
The grounds are mature and well planted, the pool and bar has pleasant surroundings, the whole experience is a plesure for mature guests.

A dated manor house in a neglected garden.

The saving grace of his hotel is its wonderful staff and the superb English Georgian and Regency furniture. For guests staying on a B&B basis, dining is elegant,with superb service,but expensive. For two guests,a three course dinner with wine will be in excess of a 100 euros.
As the hotel is located in what is a residential area there are no restaurants in the immediate neighbourhood.

From the hotel description, we had thought we would be staying in a lovely manor house in superb gardens. This is not the case as it is very apparent that little effort is now made to maintain the gardens to fomer standards and the bathrooms are in need of refurbishment.

We were lucky that we were allocated a room with a balcony in the main building and this is by far the best option. In other buildings the views would be far more restricted and access to the dining rooms might pose problems for guests with mobility problems, due to the uneven paths.

My wife and I first stayed at this hotel in September 2012.
When we decided to return to the island we had no doubt where we would stay. The staff her are out of this world! The food is excellent and view over Funchal breathtaking. I returned from Madeira on 28/06/15 and can't wait to return. We have been to the Reids but Quinta da Bela Vista wins in our opinion!

Excellent hotel out of town.....

This hotel was everything the reviews said and more. All round high standards but particularly the staff, customer service and the food.....what more could you want?
Tip. Make sure you book one of the rooms at the front (think they call them 'panoramic view' rooms) you won't be disappointed.

What a gem!

My son and I booked a week at Quinta da Bela Vista (QdBV) at short notice. We definitely didn't want to stay in a typical modern hotel on the Funchal coast. From the relatively small amount of information and photos we could find online, QdBV sounded as if it would be much more to our liking. In fact, it was better than we could have hoped for. Approaching the hotel up its drive, through its tropical gardens it has a colonial feel - and you could be forgiven for imagining that you are miles out into the countryside. We had a marvellous week, that felt more like a fortnight's break. We can't wait to return.

Loved this hotel! Stayed with 5 other family members and we couldn't have enjoyed it more. The dining room for dinner at night was especially lovely but also enjoyed the breakfast as well as the pool bar area. Service was also wonderful. Would definitely stay here again!

Good service but not a five-star hotel

Staff was always nice, friendly, and helpful. Hotel has a nice view over Funchal bay. Hotel premises are quite spacious but the rooms are rather small and on the older side. I would say room qualities are that of a 3-star. It can be quite difficult finding the hotel.

The hotel is set in lovely gardens with magnificent trees from all over the world. The gardens overlook Funchal and the port. The stall are all very pleasant and make one feel totally at home. They are all helpful and accommodating. The food is very good and there is an excellent little poolside bar where you can eat. I would return if I go back to Madeira.

Relaxing Beautiful Hotel - Mid 20s Couple

We loved our stay at Quinta Da Bela Vista. The hotel is set in beautiful gardens with superb views over Funchal. The staff are excellent and very helpful and it's a really good base to explore Madeira from. It's about 30 mins walk from the centre but there's a free shuttle bus service Mon - Fri & Sat AM. Highly recommended for a relaxing holiday.

Lovely view with great service.

Booked this as a relaxing birthday treat for my partner. Overall I was pleased with my choice, although the food wasn't quite as good as I was expecting - we ate in the main restaurant twice and the first time my salmon was very overcooked, and on the second my partner's meal was only lukewarm. Both times the service was impeccable though. The food at the bar was very good but this menu was only available until 5pm, so not an option in the evenings.

The room was lovely with a fantastic view, it could do with better facilities though. If I were to go again I would take my own hair dryer as theirs wasn't much use. It would also have been better if I hadn't had to boil the kettle on the floor as the cable wasn't long enough for it to be placed on the desk.

Generally the hotel is charming, although it's treading a fine line in some areas between old world charm and run down (eg threadbare carpets), and I wouldn't recommend it to people who had walking difficulties as the paths are uneven and aren't well lit in places.

Nice hotel,good pool and bar.

A nice, individually styled place, the pool is much nicer than it looks in the brochure, pool/snack bar is lovely, breakfasts (self-service) were good, dinners (a la carte, we did`nt try the table d`hote menu) in the old house were very good indeed, there is a mini-bus service into town but I`d suggest getting a car as the islands interior is spectacular, rooms were fine, maybe a bit dated/tired (e.g. TV was deeper than wider) but very pleasant all the same. Sit back, enjoy the place for what it is (relaxing, not boombangabang) and you`ll have a lovely time.

A Perfect Oasis

Lovely hotel, friendly and helpful staff, they even let us keep the room till 4pm on the final day as we had an evening flight. Very good food, both at breakfast and in the a la carte. The hotel is too far out of Funchal to walk in, but there is a courtesy bus, the frequent public bus at the end of the road (turn left out of the hotel) or taxis, so not really a problem. With a hire car it is very well situated for exploring as it very close to the VR1 expressway. A real oasis of calm in a busy town.

An excellent hotel combining a peaceful location with welcoming staff. Located about 5 mins away from the centre of Funchal by car, this hotel is ideal for anyone looking for a relaxing break in quiet surroundings. Based around an original Quinta built in the middle of the 19th century, it overlooks Funchal, its bay and coastline and the spectacular mountains behind. Sympathetically furnished and tastefully decorated, the hotel eschews modern bling, spas and endless 'treatments' and sticks to an understated theme which creates a wonderfully calm atmosphere in which to unwind. The outside space comprises a mature garden with an interesting range of trees and plants as well as a pool and sun terrace. Also by the pool is a a bar and elevated lounge from which to admire the views across Funchal. A small gym and steam/sauna room is alongside the pool for the more energetically inclined. Rooms are in two buildings, the main hotel building comprises the superior rooms with balconies and the second building contains the standard and deluxe rooms. Our standard room was large with a big comfortable bed, quiet AC and doors onto the garden. It was outstandingly quiet and sleep was undisturbed by anything or anyone except the sound of birdsong in the mornings. All in all, one of the best hotels I have stayed in and perfect for anyone looking for that elusive quality that really makes a hotel special.

A fine hotel for couples

The hotel is a very pleasant, quiet and comfortable oasis away from the current building works in Funchal but it is only 10 minutes away from the centre using either the hotel courtesy bus (not Sat. pm, nor Sunday) or the local no. 8 bus. Our standard room overlooking the garden was spacious and very comfortable and had everything that we needed and the staff of the hotel were friendly and very helpful. Excellent buffet breakfasts were provided in a pleasant sunny dining room in the main hotel building and the evening dinner was served in the main restaurant situated in the fine original house of the estate. The setting was formal but the food was very good with both Table d’hote and A la Carte menus available, though somewhat pricey in comparison with nearby local Portuguese restaurants. Lunch snacks were available at the bar by the heated swimming pool and gym. This is an excellent hotel which we would happily recommend and be pleased to return to again.

Brilliant service and lovely setting

We loved the hotel: staff were charming, unfailingly courteous and went out of their way to be helpful. The hotel is serene oasis and set in lovely gardens with a heated outside pool, about 10 minutes ride ( taxi or bus) from the centre of Funchal. Excellent attention to detail: fine furniture and some antiques in the public areas; a darling garden pavilion serving light meals all day; somewhat grander restaurant for dinner and a sunny Chinese -yellow dining room for breakfast. Breakfast is a comprehensive buffet of cold and hot dishes and lots of fresh fruits regularly replenished. Good quality linen, table-cloths and napkins even for snacks and bed sheets changed daily. We only had two reservations; the grander restaurant is a touch stuffy and the food though served with ceremony needs a lighter touch. And our bed was like lying on a brick. But we will return: the staff are a joy.

Ideal for quiet relaxation and calm

Whilst one or two of fitments and facilities in hotel were pobably due for replacement (e.g. televisonon in room). The overall ambience and comfort was high, and the professionalism and attentivness of the staff exemplary. The quinta is an oasis of calm in a busy town. The gardens are very well tended and very pleasant; the view over town from pool and terrace area is good.

The staff really make this hotel. They can't do enough for you and will discuss and arrange suitable itineraries, call and book restaurants etc. Really good.
The hotel is an old house in need of refurbishment. The rooms are large and confortable, the shower is a bit weedy, and nylon shower curtains went out with the ark. As for the hairdryer! Bolted to the wall of the bathroom with a snake like hose and a pointy end and not very efficient. Heated towels rails always welcome.
The breakfast was very ordinary with not a great deal of choice. No Danish pastries or those wonderful Portuguese custard tarts, just bread and croissants with the usual fare of bacon, scrambled egg etc. Some fruit but a greater choice would be welcome.
The evening meal comes as either a 5 course set meal (way too much food) at a fixed price or a la carte. Tried both. The quality of food for the set meal was quite good but the a la carte was a disaster. Badly cooked and largely inedible. A courtesy bus to town is a nice touch.

A lovely family run hotel based on an old Quinta

This was our second stay at this hotel, which is a perfect place to stay in Madiera if you want to be away from the centre of Funchal and from the crowds in the hotel quarter. The centre is easily accesible using the hotel's courtesy bus or a 5-6 Euro taxi ride. The choice at breakfast is huge, and sets you up for the day. Dinner in the restaurant is not cheap, but good value. Relaxing by the pool after a walk round Funcahl or along a levada is highly recommended.

Would like to stay longer next time...

We were made very welcome and found the staff courteous and considerate. A place to relax in pleasant surroundings especially after sightseeing. Wonderful views over Bay of Funchal. Food excellent but rather expensive - London prices, perhaps demi pension would be better value. Complementary breakfast very good, especially fresh fruit. Shuttle bus very useful.

Nice place to stay

This place definitely deserves such high rating at Tripadvisor. It's cosy and quiet, have polite and patient personell, good kitchen, perfect interior and rich garden. It would be almost perfect, but only if your are older than 50 and seeking for tranquil sort of vacation (IMHO). My only negative remark, that in such high-end place to have an internet acess only in lobbys on the ground and first floor - inadmissibly. Oh, and no working lift (but possibly it's therapeutic measure) :))
