Want to drop down the rating to below 4* because of the breakfast. The juices were worse than store brand and the coffee had burnt smell. Both coffee machines were programmed to make hot chocolate for cappuccino. I tried one more option on the machine for coffee+milk, even that one gave me burnt coffee.

I am leaving the rating at 4 because the staff was courteous and the rooms were quite nice.

We loved our stay at the Pestana. The amenities were amazing, we loved the pools and options for sea swimming plus sauna, steam room and jacuzzi in the spa. Our stay at the Pestana Carlton Madeira Ocean Resort Hotel was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine warmth and professionalism by the staff, who went out of their way to make us feel at home.

The hotel’s location is perfect—just a short walk from Funchal’s charming center, yet peaceful and right on the ocean. The views from the rooms and terraces are breathtaking, especially at sunset. We particularly loved the choice of swimming pools: the large sea-water pool with direct access to the ocean was a highlight, while the indoor heated pool provided the perfect retreat in the evenings.

Breakfast was outstanding with a wide variety of fresh fruits, pastries, and local specialties. Every meal we had at the hotel was beautifully presented and delicious, with attentive service to match.

The rooms were spacious, spotless, and very comfortable, offering all the modern amenities while still maintaining a relaxed, island atmosphere. The beds were especially comfortable, ensuring we woke up refreshed each day.

Fantastic hotel , rooms were big and very comfortable. Buffet breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and very tasty in all fairness. Plenty of pools so you're not stuck for beds or parasols which is not the case in a lot of hotels.

We had a great time on the 'Abba night' we felt it was spot on and well worth the cost, the food was very tasty and the drinks kept flowing the staff didn't hold back fair play👌

My only word of warning is that you pay quite a lot of money to stay at the hotel so I was quite shocked when I realised they were applying a 10% service charge to drinks at the bar, drinks at the poolside and at the pub restaurant, this is something I've never encountered before in a hotel.I raised my issue at the reception desk only to be told I didn't have to pay it if I didn't want to and to tell the staff next time. 10% may not seem a lot but i would've liked to have been made aware there was an option to pay it or not.

Don’t feel like it was 5 stars! We stay at one of the suites in the hotel. We could hear next door chatting and snoring! Not worth the money. Breakfast wasn’t great. The customer service via phone was slow when we try to communicate when next door was being nosy no one pick up the phone. Also the hotel doesn’t have any quiet time during night.
When we arrived no water was in the room. So the best arrival was not a good impression

The hotel is in a great location, with a walkable area and a lot of restaurants around it. We stayed in a room with pool view and were actually able to walk out the room and go straight to the pool. There also was an ocean view from our room, although we never got down to the beach. The staff was friendly and all the amenities were fine. Free parking was limited, especially since it was also being used by the locals.

Overall a pleasant stay. The rooms are spacious.
If you get a room facing the street and taxi stand it will be noisy at night as there are vars and restaurants across the street. The front desk staff are helpful. Breakfast gets very busy after 830 am and the tables aren't cleared fast enough and glasses and bowls need to be replenished often. It is a 20 minute walk to Funchal and coming back from Funchal there is a medium incline that requires some energy so this is not for everyone, especially if you are carrying bottles of alcohol or lots of souveneirs. Overall no major issues.

I have been staying at the Pestana Carlton for many, many years ( since 1990's) and am ALWAYS looking forward to going back! The hotel location is superb, the access to the sea wonderful, the various swimming pools and hotel facilities pretty good and most of all, every single member of staff treats us like family! All staff is very professional, hard working and they all make you feel welcome. Just returned from a 5 week holiday at the Carlton and cannot wait to book again!

We have been staying in the Pestana Carlton since 1994. It has a great location with selection of nice restaurants in walking distance. It is also close to Funchal city center. However, standards are declining with no lift from upper to lower pool levels and poor service in upper pool cafe. The ladies in the Atlántico Bar were amazing - friendly and efficient.

The Pestana Carlton is in a great location for strolling down to the centre of Funchal or towards the Lido area in the other direction. There are restaurants in the hotel and also a good selection of bars and restaurants within a couple of hundred meters. The hotel is clean and the rooms light and airy with either ocean or town views, both of which are excellent (no dingy air wells here!), probably quieter on the ocean side. The breakfast is excellent, with a wide choice from omelettes made to order to fresh fruit and delicious local pastries. Altogether a very pleasant atmosphere with excellent facilities and friendly and helpful staff.

The location of the Pestana Carlton is ideal. It is an easy walk to the old town and toward the Lido hotel zone. There are great restaurants and shopping close by. The downside is that the hotel is so large that there is no personal touch. Most of the staff were pleasant but didn’t go over and above to make you feel welcome. The rooms were adequate but could use updating. The balcony has beautiful views of the harbor and ocean.

I stayed here while on a trip with a friend celebrating both our birthdays and we had an amazing stay! The room was perfect, and both outdoor and indoor pools were very relaxing uma amazing views!
The breakfast had a great variety of food and freshly cooked food.
What made the big difference in our stay was definitely the staff, all very kind and helpful with everything we may have needed. We could not go without leaving a special thank you to Manuela in reception for her kindness throughout our stay ☺️

This is a 3-star hotel. Anyone who thinks otherwise has not stayed at a good hotel. The sign above the entrance has 5 stars, which must either reflect that the hotel was opened in 1972 or bribes paid to the star raters. The hotel could be 5-star only after the rooms are renovated, and the pool area, spa and gym are substantially upgraded. There are many 3-star hotels with comparable or even superior restaurants.

It was ok - wouldn’t stay again

The location was great and the receptionists were very helpful. However, i would say this hotel has become run down with main furniture items being cleaned but furniture that isn’t really seen (side table for example) are filled with dust. The other workers (at the pub, bars and restaurant) were not friendly - looking annoyed when asked for a menu… the beds are not comfortable at all!! We were not able to have a full nights sleep as the bed was hard as a rock and the A/C made so much noise and did not cool down the room at all. The pool was also freezing and filled with debris and bugs. However, the pool at the very bottom was clean I’ll give it that. Overall, not very impressed and wouldn’t stay here again.

The towels were ripped and in very bad condition.

Dated hotel and not very cleaned

The hotel is dated (it doesn't quite look like the pictures anymore) but that happens.
However we found the hotel overly quite dirty. They have 4 pools (which is great) but the two we used weren't cleaned: as an example, on our first day we found an old plaster on the side and it was still there a week later.
We also found old excrements on the sides of a toilet (been there a while) and a dead cockroach just outside a door, among other things.
Our stay was otherwise okay. We didn't sleep very well because our ocean view room was partly over the side of the hotel and the road and it gets really noisy outside at night.
We had breakfast included but we ended up going to local cafes instead because the food was much nicer (i highly recommend trying their local pastries and coffees - Madeira has really good food!).

I'm not a particularly fussy traveller and I always try to look for the positive but I have to say i was really disappointed with this hotel and wouldn't recommend it.

This place has it all!

Very nice to receive a welcome drink upon arrival after my long flight. The breakfast buffet is full of variety with fresh juices, made to order omelets and many other options. Views are amazing right along the water with onsite sauna and jacuzzi. My room had a nice balcony, large seating area and nice robe/slippers. Staff was so helpful with all requests and there are great options for dining literally across the street.Hotel is about a $35-$45 taxi ride from the airport so maybe book a service or have the front desk book for you. I would absolutely stay here again!

Our check in experience was wonderful, we were warmly greeted and given great tips and information about the island! The resort itself is large, several swimming pools available and well maintained. We stayed in a junior suite with 2 children (who used the sofa bed which was comfortable and large), it was not ocean view, but was spacious and clean. For a 5 star resort a few small things could be tidied up, such as many scuffs on walls, carpet upgraded, but other than that room was good! The breakfast buffet is simply amazing!! We looked forward to it every morning! Great experience overall!

The hotel was amazing - they staff were helpful in the extreme - they were friendly and very informed regarding the area and what the Island had to offer! The food was so good and plentiful - the dining room staff were efficient and the food in offer was excellent. The only problem I had was the pigeon problem. Full disclosure I am afraid and have a dreadful fear of birds. The fact the they fly into eating areas had me very stressed and reluctant to eat there! I would have loved to sit in the outdoor areas but there were so many pigeons amd jumping onto tables - I was forced to eat elsewhere! This is not a criticism of the staff or management but it was a problem for me personally. Everything else was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to go to MI

The location was excellent and the staff at the front desk as well as the door men were very attentive and helpful. The grounds are beautiful and there are a ton of local options for food. My biggest negative is it's impossible to get a lounger by the pool. I spent 6 days here in Madeira, and I like to get up and out each morning for sight-seeing. Coming back to the hotel each afternoon to no chairs at the pool was a real bummer, because I couldn't really enjoy the property itself. My other negative is that restaurant service is verrrrry slow. I'd sometime wait 15 minutes to just get coffee at breakfast or a drink by the pool bar at the afternoon. Both these factors would make me look elsewhere next time, which is a shame, because the hotel itself and the location is great.

The property was beautiful and pools and amenities excellent. Wonderful and attentive service. However our room was very old and looks to have not been updated since the mid 80’s. The toilet was so old there were water stains from the running water in the bowl and the toilet constantly ran. They were quick to fix it when I advised however by end of stay it was running again. It should be replaced. The Tv was heavily damaged and should have been replaced years ago. Once I advised the replaced asap with new one. However that tv should have been replaced well before our stay and makes me think there do not do regular service checks. The bed however was excellent and new and we had a wonderful nights sleep and the room was always cleaned. Other then the lack of room updates the property was wonderful. Would stay again but would confirm the room has been updated in at least the last decade.
